‘Corrupt political parties’ can never support electoral reforms: Farrukh

0

ISLAMABAD, Dec 8 (APP):Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Farrukh Habib on Wednesday questioned the rationale behind the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)’s reluctance to hold discussion on use of the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) in the elections.

“Bilawal Sahab was talking to reform the local government system, but why he is reluctant to consult [the government] on the use of EVM to make the system transparent,” he said in a news statement issued by his office in response to the PPP chairman’s news conference.

He lashed out at Bilawal Zardari for abstaining from holding consultation on the electoral reforms, crucial to ensure free, fair and transparent polls in the country.
“Corrupt political parties can never support electoral reforms,” the minister remarked and asked the PPP chairman as to why his party passed the local government election law in Sindh in haste and without any consultation with the provincial opposition.

The Sindh government was exploiting the people of the province in connivance with various mafias, he said, adding there had been extreme inflation in Sindh due to corruption of the PPP which was backing hoarders and profiteers.

The PPP was in the government in Sindh for the last 13 years, he said while asking Bilawal to bring to the fore a single major initiative of his government.

He said a 20 kg bag of flour was being sold at Rs 1,400 in Sindh as compared to Punjab where it was available at Rs 1,100. The corrupt rulers of Sindh had devoured wheat worth billions of rupees, but nobody took action against them, he added.

Farrukh said the public sector hospitals were facing severe shortage of ambulances while animals were given shelters in the government schools of Sindh.

The situation on ground negated the towering claims of the Sindh government about spending massive funds in health and education sectors, he added.

He said the Sindh government had left its people at the mercy of hoarders, profiteers, land and tanker mafias. Appointments of blue-eyed people on the basis of fake domiciles were also in the PPP’s credit, he added.

The minister said all the major initiatives including green line and uplift of underprivileged areas in Sindh were taken by the federal government as the provincial government was only indulged in committing corrupt practices.
He said PPP and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz looted the country ruthlessly during their respective tenures.

The corruption was rampant in the Benazir Income Support programme launched by the PPP government in their last tenure at centre, he noted.

Farrukh said under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan, the country and people had been embarked on path of prosperity and progress.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government was striving to fulfill the mandate given by the people of Pakistan during the last general elections.

Practical measures were being taken to resolve issues of people, he said, adding the PTI government had allocated a sum of Rs260 billion for Ehsaas Programme, under which as many as 34 programs were being run successfully.

Pak-China bilateral trade, Pakistan’s exports to China setting records this year: Wang Wenbin

0

ISLAMABAD, Dec 8 (APP):Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Wang Wenbin said on Wednesday that Pakistan-China bilateral trade and Pakistan’s exports to China were both running at record levels for the year to date.

The economic and trade cooperation between China and Pakistan are mutually beneficial and has delivered tangible benefits to two peoples, he made these comments during his regular briefing in response to a question asked by APP.

He said that since beginning of this year, the bilateral trade volume between Pakistan and China and volume of Pakistan’s exports trade to China both registered historical highs.

Wang Wenbin said that China stands ready to work together with Pakistan to deepen all round cooperation including in trade and investments and to deliver greater benefits to both peoples.

It may be mentioned here that Chinese Consul General in Karachi Li Bijian during his visit to the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) on Monday highlighted that there were ample trade opportunities in China for Pakistani industrialists and investors.

Pakistan can export fruits, vegetables to China, while China has a large seafood market, including rice and fish from which Pakistani exporters could take full advantage.

He opined that the two countries could work out a strategy to increase Pakistan’s export volume through trade, urging Pakistani industrialists to take advantage of the free trade agreement between the two countries.

Meanwhile, observers noted that the strengthened cooperation in infrastructure, especially for the construction of energy and transportation projects in Pakistan, has achieved great outcomes in 2021, while more and more Chinese enterprises have been entering Pakistan with the efficient expansion of projects in the Gwadar port and local industrial parks built by Chinese companies.

The cooperation between China and Pakistan has great potential, shown by the increasing number of Chinese companies entering the market, Zhou Rong, a senior researcher at the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China, told the Global Times on Wednesday, adding that more local factories have been structurally transformed and now contribute to exports from Pakistan.

The latest milestone in the relationship comes after China and Pakistan signed an agreement that would further open the Chinese market for Pakistani onion imports in late November, the first deal since the two neighbors embarked on the second development phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which focuses on cooperation across industrial and agricultural sectors. Zhou noted that the agreement showed that China has been working on reducing the trade deficit between the two countries and getting more high-quality products from Pakistan. It also showed that Pakistan has been continuously improving the quality of its agricultural products to better meet increasing demand from the Chinese market, Zhou added.

Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Nong Rong said earlier that between January and September in 2021, agricultural trade totaled $860 million, with Pakistan’s exports to China reaching $630 million, a two-fold increase year-over-year, while the exports of mangoes alone reached 37.4 tons, a jump of more than 10 times compared with the same period last year. Zhou emphasized that China is still a potential market for more Pakistani products such as soccer and bath towels, which will be favored by Chinese consumers, but further efforts for marketing needed.

By Sohail Ali

LAHORE, Dec 08 (APP): HN Polo, Remounts and Barry’s/BN 2 carved out contrastive victories in the Brighto Paints Lahore Open Polo Championship 2021 matches here at the Lahore Polo Club ground on Wednesday.

Team HN Polo registered a narrow 6-5 triumph over Diamond Paints/Sheikhoo Steel in a thrilling first encounter of the day. Experienced Raja Sami Ullah’s spell-bound performance was highlight of the day as he remained instrumental throughout the match and contributed with a classic quartet while he was ably assisted by another shinning star Lt Col Omer Minhas, who thrashed in two tremendous goals.

Team Diamond Paints/Sheikhoo Steel also fought well till the end, but HN Polo played better polo and emerged as winners. From the losing team, Andres Llorente and Mir Huzaifa, who fired in four and one goal respectively, tried hard to win the match for their team but their efforts were futile in the end.

Remounts beat Newage Cables/Rizvi’s by a close margin of 5-4 in the second nail-biting match of the day. ALD Imran Shahid emerged as top scorer of the match from the winning side as he hammered three convincing goals while his teammates SWR Naeem and Raja Temur Nadeem struck one goal apiece. Newage Cables/Rizvi’s though gave tough time to Remounts but they couldn’t finish well, thus lost the match by a narrow margin of 4-5. Tomas Reinoso played superb polo and hammered a hat-trick of goals while emerging polo player Syed Turab Rizvi also played well and converted one goal.

Barry’s/BN 2 prevailed over Guard Group and outpaced them with a good margin of 7-3 in the third and last match of the day. Babar Naseem and Ernesto Trotz were the key contributors from the winning side. They amused the spectators with their powerful and accurate hitting and classic conversion of goals one after another. Both the stars of team Barry’s/BN 2 contributed with three tremendous goals each while the remaining one was beautifully converted by phenomenal Hamza Mawaz Khan.

Guard Group though had a galaxy of stars in their team yet they couldn’t pose serious threat to team Barry’s/BN 2, thus lost the match by 3-7. Mohammad Reza Behboudi played well for team Guard Group and contributed with a brace while Lt Col Rab Nawaz Tiwana also added one goal in the tally, which was too less to win the match.

Tomorrow (Thursday), a press conference will be held here at 12:00 pm at the Lahore Polo Club, where the club management along with sponsors Brighto Paints officials will brief about the tournament.

Innovative, scientific interventions imperative to ensure food security: Shibli Faraz

0

FAISALABAD, Dec 08 (APP):Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Senator Syed Shibli Faraz Wednesday said that innovative, scientific interventions are imperative in agriculture sector to ensure food security by enhancing per acre yield.

He expressed these views during a meeting with UAF Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan at the meeting room of University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF).

Federal Secretary Science and Technology Dr. Akhtar Nazir, Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) Chairman Dr. Syed Hussain Abidi, Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Anas Sarwar Qureshi and all the deans were present.

Syed Shibli Faraz said that instead of being an adornment of the library, researchers should introduce new technologies to solve the problems of farmers and agricultural sector. He said that farmers were facing difficulties due to poor quality seeds but the proposed certified seed project of the UAF would prove a milestone in tackling this challenge. He assured of the federal government would extend full support for the success of this project.

He said that UAF was rendering remarkable services for development of agriculture sector. He said that agricultural scientists should introduce IT applications for the promotion of modern trends in agriculture with the help of information technology so that the farmers could get up-to-date information immediately. He said the academia, industry and the government must make joint efforts to attain the new height of the prosperity. He said that the government was promoting the culture of need based and applied research for uplift of agriculture sector.

He also underlined the need to create awareness among the farmers about the latest trends including hydroponics. Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan said that only 30-35% of the farmers in the country could benefit from certified seeds. He said the UAF seed project would come up with the valuable results. He said that agriculture was facing problems including low productivity, fertility of land, shrinking agricultural area, water, unavailability of certified seeds. He said that nature has enriched Pakistan with natural resources but unfortunately we had not used them wisely.

“Health problems are arising due to malnutrition. If we make flour from a mixture of wheat and corn, it will also improve the quality of food,” he said. He said that the average wheat yield of Pakistan per acre is 31 maunds while progressive farmers are getting up to 60 maunds. He said that due to lack of resources in our country, the farmer were facing difficulty in obtaining agricultural inputs due to which there was a problem of reduction in overall yield per acre. He said that machine picking of cotton will increase production.

Dr. Akhtar Nazir said that all resources were being utilized for the solution of the problems faced by the farmers. He said that the scientists of UAF have to play a vital role for the development of agriculture. “Our yield per acre is very low due to traditional farming methods. If the recommendations of agricultural scientists are followed, the yield can be increased,” he said.

Dr. Syed Hussain Abidi said that the knowledge based economy was essential in the present times for progress by cultivating a culture of excellent research. “We have to take steps to bring modern technology to the farmers,” he said.
