Governor directs VCs to make varsities drug, narcotics free

LAHORE, Sep 10 (APP): Chancellor, Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider Khan has directed the Vice Chancellors of all universities to make campuses drug and narcotics free and take concrete steps to protect female students from harassment and provide them safe environment in universities.
According to the details shared by Governor’s spokesperson here Tuesday, Governor Punjab/Chancellor Sardar Saleem has issued a letter to the Vice-Chancellors of all the universities of Punjab to strictly ensure the prohibition of smoking in the campus premises and hostels to make the educational institution drug-free.
He said that it is necessary to ensure drug testing in educational institutions for all those students who are accused of drug-related crimes. He said that such students should undergo blood test, dope test, hepatitis test, this initiative will help promote a safe and conducive learning environment for other students. He said that necessary arrangements should be made for psychological counseling sessions for such students who are found involved in taking drugs. The Governor Punjab also stressed that the entry of unidentified persons in the universities should be fully checked. He said that entry of any person without identity cards should be prohibited to ensure that no stranger can enter campus premises and hostels. In this regard, the university should issue visiting cards to the visitors at entry gates. He said that it should be made mandatory for all students/faculty members/employees of the universities to wear ID cards.
Punjab Governor/Chancellor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan said that it is a matter of great concern that incidents of harassment against women are increasing in universities. He has issued instructions to the Vice Chancellor of Punjab Universities to implement the Protection Against Harassment of Women Act, 2010, and the guidelines of the Higher Education Commission regarding harassment in letter and spirit. The Governor Punjab added that the same faculty members are teaching in the universities and then conducting the examinations/paper checking. Such discretion might risk unrest among students, therefore, separating these two teacher roles will significantly reduce the risk of teachers exploiting female students. He said that both the paper setters and the checkers should be external individuals.
Haider Khan has said that the students should be provided a conducive learning environment.

Gillani challenges NAB’s jurisdiction in Toshakhana vehicles’ case

ISLAMABAD, Sep 10 (APP):Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani on Tuesday challenged the jurisdiction of the Accountability Court in hearing the the Toshakhana vehicles reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against him.
Accountability Court Judge Abida Sajjad, who heard the reference, sought comments from NAB.
During the course of proceedings, Gillani’s lawyer pleaded that the reference did not fall in the jurisdiction of NAB after restoration of amendments in the NAB law.
At this, the court served notices to the respondents and adjourned the case till September 26.

Chinese business delegation visit SIFC

ISLAMABAD, Sep 10 (APP): A high-level Chinese business delegation, comprising Xinjiang Iron Brothers Co Ltd with four other prominent Chinese business entities Tuesday visited Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC).

The delegation was headed by Mr Yuan Jianmin (Senior and renowned Economist) along with members representing various business enterprises, said a press release issued here.

The delegation was warmly received by officials of SIFC and comprehensive briefs were given covering potential and investment opportunities in priority sectors including Agriculture/ Livestock, IT, Energy, Minerals, Tourism, Industry, and policy level measures being undertaken to improve the overall investment climate in the country.

The delegation was also briefed about salient features of industrial development in Pakistan.

The delegation showed keen interest for investments in key sectors under SIFC and relocation of Chinese industries to Pakistan including Gilgit Baltistan.

The visit of delegation will further catalyze the ongoing engagements between Pakistan and China under Business-to-Business framework.

Rawal Dam’s spillways to open on Sept 11; precautionary measures advised

ISLAMABAD, Sep 10 (APP):The district administration on Tuesday announced to release water of Rawal Dam and urged the residents, especially those in vulnerable areas, to take necessary precautions.
With the water level in Rawal Dam reaching 1752 feet, the district administration has confirmed that Rawal Dam’s spillways would be opened on September 11 at 6am. While precautionary measures have been put in place to ensure public safety.
Officials have advised residents to stay away from urban river channels, as the water release could lead to higher water flow. Those living in low-lying areas are urged to implement safety measures and be prepared for possible flooding.
In case of emergencies, residents can contact to the district administration by dialing 16. Authorities have also advised farmers and livestock owners to move their cattle to safer areas in advance.
Strict monitoring of river channels and bridges will be carried out to track any changes in water levels. The district administration has assured the public that all necessary preparations to manage a potential flood situation have been completed.

IGP reviews progress on pending challans, road certificates

LAHORE, Sep 10 (APP):Inspector General of Punjab (IGP) Police Dr Usman Anwar on Tuesday chaired a meeting at the Central Police Office to review progress on pending challans and completion of road certificates.
The meeting was attended via video link by Additional IG South Punjab, all RPOs, CPOs, and DPOs of the province.
IGP Dr. Usman Anwar expressed satisfaction with the improvement in the completion targets for pending road certificates and challans. He directed officers to ensure the prompt submission of pending road certificates and challans in courts. He also instructed that strict action be taken, without any discrimination, against investigation officers and SHOs showing poor performance in completing road certificates and challans.
Additional IG Investigation Muhammad Idrees Ahmad, DIG Investigation Azhar Akram, DIG Legal Awais Ahmad and AIG Monitoring Malik Tariq Mehmood were also present.
