QUETTA, Jul 16 (APP):Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Balochistan, Jahanzeb Khan, has emerged as a trailblazer in disaster preparedness and public service, pioneering modern technologies to strengthen emergency response capabilities across the province.
Under his leadership, PDMA has integrated satellite imagery and advanced data analytics to establish early warning systems that have significantly minimized the devastating impacts of natural calamities, said a news release on Wednesday. The innovative tools and strategies have saved countless lives and resources while improving overall disaster readiness.
The PDMA, guided by Jahanzeb Khan’s vision, has launched wide-scale public awareness campaigns aimed at educating citizens on disaster preparedness and safety protocols.
Meanwhile, emergency responders, including Levies forces, Civil Defense teams, volunteers, and rescue units, have received specialized training to enhance provincial capacity.
During last year’s devastating floods and torrential rains, Khan mobilized emergency operations with commendable efficiency, ensuring rapid distribution of tents, food rations, potable water, and medical aid, even in Balochistan’s most remote and underserved areas.
PDMA’s collaboration with international partners has further transformed the region’s disaster infrastructure, bringing technical support, funding, and policy innovation that bolster emergency resilience.
The provincial emergency center in PDMA’s Quetta office now operates round the clock, coordinating with district administrations and relevant departments to prevent and respond to crises promptly.
In one of the region’s most volatile terrains, plagued by earthquakes, floods, and drought, the PDMA has become a symbol of swift response, strategic coordination, and public service.
During the 2024 unrest in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Khan intervened to facilitate the safe return of dozens of Baloch students trapped in the conflict. More recently, PDMA played a vital role in receiving and supporting students and pilgrims repatriated from Iran amid regional tensions stemming from the Iran-Israel conflict. Food, shelter, water, and transport were provided to returning nationals through a coordinated effort with the Overseas Pakistanis Foundation (OPF).
Beyond emergency relief, Jahanzeb Khan has quietly contributed to peace building efforts in the province, mediating dialogues with civil society figures and resolving protests among civil servants which has always with a focus on stability and public interest.
For his exceptional service, Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti and Chief Secretary Shakeel Qadir Khan have honored Jehanzeb Khan with appreciation certificates, though many believe national recognition is warranted.
His hands-on leadership in disaster-affected districts such as Washuk, Khuzdar, Turbat, Gwadar, Ormara, and Naseerabad showcases a commitment that has elevated Balochistan’s response capabilities to unprecedented levels.
Chief Minister Bugti continues to underscore the importance of public service, good governance, and efficient delivery, values deeply reflected in PDMA’s evolving mandate under Jahanzeb Khan.

PCJCCI pushes for honey export expansion to China

0
LAHORE, Jul 16 (APP): The Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) Wednesday expressed strong interest in enhancing Pakistan’s honey exports to China by introducing international certification standards and modern processing technology.
During a think-tank session held here at the PCJCCI Secretariat, the joint chamber’s President Nazir Hussain highlighted the untapped potential of Pakistan’s honey market and emphasized the urgent need for reform and modernization.
“Currently, Pakistani honey is sold for only USD 20–25 per kilogram, but with proper certification and international packaging, this can rise to USD 100 per kilogram,” he added. Despite its superior taste and affordability compared to globally recognized brands like New Zealand’s, Pakistan’s honey lacks certification, which limits its export potential.
He called for the establishment of internationally accredited laboratories and large-scale processing facilities to bring Pakistan’s honey sector up to global standards. China, being the world’s largest honey producer and exporter, can be an invaluable partner in transferring advanced filtration and packaging technology to Pakistan,” he suggested.
PCJCCI Senior Vice President Brig. (Retd.) Mansoor Saeed Sheikh confirmed China’s readiness to assist Pakistan in upgrading its honey production infrastructure. Chinese companies are willing to share expertise in honey processing technologies such as filtration, sterilization, and temperature control. With government backing, Pakistan’s honey industry could meet the moisture and quality standards required by the Chinese market.
Zafar Iqbal, Vice President, cited National Bank of Pakistan data showing that Pakistan exported USD 6.351 million worth of natural honey from July to November 2020, with Saudi Arabia being the top importer. He emphasized that with international certification, Pakistan could target high-value markets including Europe.
Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General PCJCCI, stated that China’s robust certification and lab infrastructure provides a model for Pakistan. Joint ventures with Chinese companies can fast-track the establishment of modern testing labs, enhancing both production and export capacity. Pakistan currently produces 20,000 tons of honey annually, and stakeholders believe that certified exports could significantly increase this figure.

More misery as new Israeli evacuation orders impact tens of thousands of people in Gaza: UN

0

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 16 (APP): New evacuation orders in Gaza issued by the Israeli military have uprooted tens of thousands of Palestinians, amid ongoing bombardment, aid agencies have warned.

Those impacted by the orders have been told to relocate to the “already overcrowded” coastal strip at Al Mawasi, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), late Tuesday.

Al Mawasi near Khan Younis lacks “the basics for survival”, the UN agency insisted. It has also seen nearly two dozen strikes on displaced Gazans sheltering in tents there between 18 March and 11 April, the UN human rights office said.

As the war drags on well into its 21st month, Gaza’s most vulnerable people continue to struggle to survive.

They include Musbah Zaqqout, 70, one of 230 patients receiving lifesaving dialysis at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. His treatment has been disrupted by persistent supply shortages that reduced sessions from three to two per week at the end of last month, the UN World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Tuesday.

“He suffered a lot when dialysis was not available,” said Zaqqout’s wife, Saadia. “He was suffocating and was frequently admitted to the hospital, to the point where he fell into a coma, lost focus and didn’t recognize anyone.”

With support from partner organization KS Relief, WHO delivered dialysis supplies and fuel for Al-Shifa Hospital, so that it could resume dialysis treatment and other lifesaving services.

“Thank God, after restarting dialysis, his condition improved,” Mrs. Zaqqout said, while the UN health agency reiterated its calls for sustained entry of food, fuel, and health aid at scale through all possible routes.

“Critical shortages of fuel and medical supplies persist across Gaza,” WHO warned. “Without urgent and sustained replenishment, health care services risk coming to a grinding halt.”

Echoing those concerns, the UN agency for Palestinians, UNRWA, warned on Wednesday that it is increasingly difficult to help Gazans. Already, one in 10 of the children brought to its clinics suffers from malnutrition. The condition was unheard of in the enclave before the war, but it more than doubled in children under five between March and June, amid the near-total Israeli siege.

“It’s becoming more and more difficult for us to continue providing services,” said UNRWA’s Louise Wateridge. “At least 188 UNRWA installations – over half of all our installations in the Gaza Strip – are located within the Israeli-militarized zone, under displacement orders, or where these overlap.”

In an update, Ms. Wateridge said that only six UNRWA health centres and 22 of the agency’s medical points remain operational today, in addition to 22 mobile medical points inside and outside shelters.

Nearly 60 per cent of essential medical supplies are now out of stock, according to the UN agency. “Children are dying before our eyes, because we do not have the medical supplies or sustained food to treat them,” it said.

As a direct result of the Israeli blockade on Gaza which began on 2 March, UNRWA said that it has “now run out of” medicines for high blood pressure, antiparasitic and antifungal medicine, medicine for eye infections and inflammation, all skin treatments and oral antibiotics for adults.

Providing clean water to the war-shattered enclave remains a massive challenge and only two UNRWA main water wells still function. Ten were operational before the war. Another 41 smaller wells are operational in UNRWA shelters.

For the past two months in north Gaza, UNRWA has been forced to stop providing water and sanitation services for around 25,000 displaced people in shelters, owing to displacement orders issued by Israeli forces.

“The restrictions on the entry of fuel continues placing life-saving services at a severe risk,” the UN agency said. “Critical water services are at risk of shutting down if sustained fuel supplies are not permitted entry.”
