Commissioner reviews emergency drainage operations

Sargodha, Jun 26 (APP): Commissioner Sargodha Jahanzeb Awan on Thursday visited various areas of city and reviewed the ongoing emergency drainage operations after the heavy rainfall at night.
According to Commissioner office spokesperson here, the commissioner visited low-lying areas and supervised the drainage operations, ensuring immediate action to drain water and deploy additional machinery and manpower.
During his visit, the Commissioner interacted with citizens, listened to their problems and informed them about the steps being taken by the Punjab government for a permanent solution to sewage and drainage issues.
He assured the public that a modern master plan for drainage and sewerage is underway, which includes upgrading the old system and installing modern drainage systems.
On the occasion, the officers accompanying the Commissioner, including CCO Municipal Corporation Majid bin Ahmed and CEO Solid Waste Management Company Rana Shahid Imran, briefed him on the emergency response efforts. They reported that field staff was mobilized immediately after the rainfall and jet machines, skir pumps and water bowsers are being used to drain water from drains, streets, and roads.
The Commissioner directed the institutions to be fully alert in view of the expected rains in the coming days, ensuring all complaints are redressed immediately and maintaining a strong presence in the field. He emphasized that public relief is the top priority and warned against any negligence.

Over 16,000 personnel deployed to secure 181 Majalis, 965 Muharram processions

ISLAMABAD, Jun 26 (APP): Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police have finalized an extensive security plan for Muharram-ul-Haram, deploying over 16,000 personnel to ensure the safety of 181 religious gatherings (Majalis) and 965 processions across the federal capital.
A public relations officer told APP on Thursday that the plan was formally approved by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad, Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, after a detailed review, while DIG Muhammad Jawad Tariq has been tasked with supervising its implementation.
He said that over 16,000 personnel from Islamabad Police, Pakistan Rangers, Lady Police, Traffic Police, and the Special Branch will be deployed to maintain law and order during the month of Muharram. The security deployment aims to ensure the peaceful conduct of 181 Majalis and 965 processions scheduled in various sectors of Islamabad.
DIG Tariq has issued strict directions to all Zonal SPs, SDPOs, and SHOs to maintain close liaison with the organizers of Majalis and peace committees. They have been instructed to ensure cooperation in maintaining security and to secure the routes of all processions.
He said that walkthrough gates and metal detectors will be installed at the entry and exit points of all Majalis and processions, while participants will be professionally checked by police officials. Peace committees have been asked to assist in identifying participants and ensuring no unknown persons are allowed to stay inside worship places.
 DIG Tariq emphasized the importance of clearing bushes and improving lighting arrangements around worship places, in coordination with relevant departments. Patrolling has also been enhanced, and commando vehicles will be deployed in sensitive areas.
DIG said that special focus will be placed on traffic arrangements to ensure smooth vehicular flow across the city. Parking areas will be set up at a safe distance from the main procession routes, with strict security checks in place.
DIG Tariq said that rooftops of buildings along procession routes will be covered by police officials, while special arrangements have been made for female gatherings with the deployment of Lady Police officers. Volunteers assisting in security duties will be registered with complete biodata collected by local SHOs.
DIG said that additional deployment of Rangers and elite commandos will be made at sensitive Imambargahs, which will remain on high alert. Rope lines will be used to secure processions from all directions.
He said that strict measures have also been directed to prevent wall chalking, display of illegal posters, and the distribution of any material that could incite sectarian tension.
DIG Tariq said that the Islamabad Police will perform their duties with full dedication and professionalism to ensure the safety of citizens and the peaceful observance of Muharram-ul-Haram rituals.

Governor Sindh reaffirms commitment to a drug-free Pakistan on international day

KARACHI, Jun 26 (APP): On the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Governor Sindh Kamran Khan Tessori has reaffirmed the collective national resolve for a drug-free Pakistan, calling for unity and cooperation in eliminating drug use from society.
In a message issued on Thursday, the Governor stressed that protecting the youth from falling prey to drug addiction is a shared responsibility. “Drug abuse is a destructive force that erodes the foundation of society,” he stated, emphasizing the urgent need for stricter measures to prevent the spread of drugs, particularly within educational institutions.
He noted that the fight against drug trafficking and consumption requires both governmental and public cooperation. “Drug dealers are enemies of humanity,” he asserted, urging for robust and united action to eradicate this menace.
Highlighting the importance of channeling youth energy positively, the Governor underscored the need to engage young people in constructive and healthy activities as a long-term solution to prevent drug use.
“The war against drugs is essential for building a healthier and more productive society,” he concluded, calling on citizens and institutions alike to play their part in this national cause.

Police unveil security plan for Muharram

PESHAWAR, Jun 26 (APP): Peshawar Capital City Police have announced a robust security plan, deploying over 8,500 police officers and personnel across the city to ensure safety and order during the holy month of Muharram.
According to police, Rapid Response Force (RRF), Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Quick Response Force (QRF), Lady Police, Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU), Ababeel Squad, City Patrolling Units and Traffic Police would be deployed as part of measures to maintain peace in the holy month.
Security measures would encompass all procession routes, Majalis-e-Aza, and Imambargahs where BDU teams and sniffer dogs to detect any threats.
A modern Command and Control Center has been established in the Kohati area equipped with advanced surveillance tools. The control room would monitor key locations across the city using CCTV and drone cameras.
Authorities have also announced a ban on the entry of vehicles into the inner city during the final days of Muharram to maintain security and prevent congestion.
The police urged citizens to cooperate with security personnel and report any suspicious activity to ensure peace in Muharram.

PGGANH organized “Pakistan Girls Empowerment Forum

ISLAMABAD, Jun 26 (APP): Pakistan Girl Guides Association National Headquarters (PGGANH) organized “Pakistan Girls Empowerment Forum- Pathway to Leadership” from 21st to 26th June 2025.
110 Guides and their Leaders from AJK, Baluchistan, Gilgit Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Islamabad Capital Territory participated. The event was organized in collaboration with UNICEF Pakistan.
Pakistan Girl Guides Association has recently launched 4 new badge curricula regarding Nutrition, Environment & Climate Change, Leadership, and Mental and Emotional Wellbeing. During the event, Girls experienced activities of these 4 badges and will cascade these to at least 10 more girls after returning to their home towns. Upon completion of this task, they will become Empowerment Champions.
Ms Cindy Kushner, Deputy Representative (a.i), UNICEF Pakistan, was the Chief Guest of the Event. Mrs. Maria Maud Sabri, National Commissioner, Pakistan Girl Guides Association, welcomed her and the other Guests.
She briefed them about the program and activities of the Guiding. She said that Guiding is preparing leaders for tomorrow. While experiencing the Guide program, the girls learn to step forward whenever there is a need. Mrs. Maria Maud Sabri also informed the guests about the new badges. She commended the tireless efforts of Guides, volunteers, and partners for their unwavering commitment to creating safe and inclusive spaces for young women and girls.
A highlight of the ceremony was a compelling panel discussion moderated by Ms. Fahmida Khan, featuring Girl Guides as panelists. The discussion spotlighted their journeys, insights, and dreams for the future, offering a powerful reflection on leadership, resilience, and the transformative power of girl-led initiatives.
Ms. Cindy Kushner, Deputy Representative of UNICEF Pakistan, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. In her inspiring remarks, she underscored the vital role of partnerships in nurturing girl-led leadership and promoting gender equality. She highlighted the potential of young girls and emphasized that empowering them should not be the responsibility of a single organization—it must be a national priority. She said:
“This forum does more than just amplify girls’ voices; it reminds us that when we work together, grounded in equality and respect, we shape a future where every girl has the chance to grow, learn, and lead. UNICEF Pakistan is proud to walk this journey alongside PGGA, and together we will continue creating spaces where every girl can realize her full potential.”
She also encouraged participants to stay resilient, to keep dreaming, and to use their voices as a source of strength for others.
The event also included a soulful empowerment song performed by a Girl Guide, moving the audience with lyrics that echoed the Forum’s themes of strength, unity, and self-belief.

Lawmakers support govt’s green university initiative to combat climate change

ISLAMABAD, Jun 26 (APP): Members of the National Assembly from various political parties have welcomed the government’s plan to establish a Green University aimed at tackling climate change and promoting environmental awareness.
The lawmakers shared their views while speaking to PTV News outside the Parliament House on Thursday.
Dr. Shaista Jadoon, MNA from PML-N, called the initiative timely and important. “This university will help in research on global warming, which is a serious issue for the entire world,” she said.
Syed Aminul Haq, MNA from MQM, praised the government’s broader climate policies. “Efforts like emission control, promotion of green energy, and support for electric vehicles will play a key role in fighting climate change,” he said.
Malik Shakir Bashir, MNA, said the government cannot do it alone. “Every section of society needs to come forward and support the fight against climate change,” he urged.
The lawmakers noted that one of the main goals of the Green University is to involve young people in climate action. They said this step would help prepare the next generation to deal with future environmental challenges.
Ali Musa Gilani, MNA, highlighted the impact of climate change on agriculture. “Food security is under threat. The agricultural sector is suffering. We need to raise awareness among the public,” he said.

NAB prosecutor given time for preparation in appeals of PTI founder, Bushra Bibi

ISLAMABAD, Jun 26 (APP): A division bench of Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday granted time to NAB’s special prosecutor for preparation in appeals seeking suspension of sentences of PTI founder and Bushra Bibi in 190 million pounds reference.
During the hearing of the 190 million pounds case, Acting Chief Justice Islamabad High Court Justice Sarfaraz Dogar said while talking to the PTI lawyer that you want to put pressure on me.
A two-judge bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sardar Sarfaraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Asif heard the appeals. Special Prosecutor Javed Arshad Advocate and Rafe Maqsood appeared in the court on behalf of National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
On this occasion, the three sisters of the founder of PTI, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur, Opposition Leader Omar Ayub, Senator Shibli Faraz, Faisal Javed and other party leaders were also present in the court.
During the hearing, Special Prosecutor Javed Arshad Advocate told the court that he was appointed as the prosecutor in this case yesterday. He also presented the notification of appointment in the court and said that this is an important case and he should be given 4 weeks to understand it so that he can read the record and appear in court with full preparation.
He said that he has never been a part of this case, so giving him a proper opportunity would be in line with the requirements of transparency.
PTI founder’s lawyer Barrister Salman Safdar took the stand that the NAB is continuously adopting the method of postponement. This case is not ordinary, but a woman has also been punished in it and the general attitude of the courts is that women’s punishment is suspended. We should be given a chance to start our case so that we can present arguments, he said.
During the hearing, the Acting Chief Justice warned the lawyers and other people present in the court to take care of the decorum of the court and not put unnecessary pressure on the court. Addressing Barrister Salman Safdar, the Acting Chief Justice said that you want to put pressure on me.
The court said that the next date of hearing will be given in the written order.
The court accepted the request of NAB for time to prepare the case and adjourned the hearing. The court directed that the parties should start arguments at the next hearing.
