KARACHI, Jun 26 (APP): Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Thursday directed the Karachi water board to ensure the operational readiness of TP-I of the S-III project by the end of August, while also expediting work on TP-IV to achieve completion within the next year.
The meeting, held at CM House, was attended by Minister for Planning and Development Nasir Shah, Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani, and Mayor of Karachi Murtaza Wahab, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, Chairman P&D Najam Shah, Secretary LG Waseem Shamshad, DG PPP Unit Asad Zamin, Secretary to CM Zaman Narejo and CEO Water Board Ahmad Ali Siddiqui.
The S-III project is poised to address Karachi’s pressing wastewater management challenges, currently estimated at 400–450 million gallons per day (MGD), a significant portion of which is discharged untreated into the Lyari and Malir Rivers. This initiative aims to intercept, treat, and safely dispose of wastewater through upgraded infrastructure, thereby promoting environmental sustainability and protecting marine life while minimising public health risks.
The main components of the project include various transmission packages across the Lyari and Malir River Basins, alongside enhancements to existing sewage treatment plants and the construction of new facilities. The implementation of TP-I will rehabilitate an obsolete plant while expanding capacity, with the upgraded facility expected to be ready for commissioning by August 2025. Meanwhile, TP-IV encompasses a comprehensive wastewater treatment and recycling framework, including extensive flow measurements and water sampling across designated locations.
With a demand survey identifying a significant requirement of 42 MGD from over 3,600 industries in the region, the S-III project marks a vital step towards integrating effective wastewater management systems with urban infrastructure, ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable future for Karachi. The CM was informed that the TP-I plant overhauling has been completed by 67 per cent, with only electrical works remaining, which would be finished if funds are made available.
The CM then directed the water board to start TP-I by the end of August and to accelerate work on TP-IV, aiming for its completion within a year. The chief minister also instructed the Minister of Local Government and the Mayor of Karachi to personally oversee the progress of the project so that their work could be completed within the deadline.

ICCI calls for close industry-academia collaboration to drive economic growth

0
ISLAMABAD, Jun 26 (APP): The Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) has underscored the critical importance of robust collaboration between industry and academia for the promotion of entrepreneurship and sustainable economic development in Pakistan.
In a joint statement issued on Thursday, Nasir Mansoor Qureshi, President ICCI, along with Senior Vice President Abdul Rehman Siddiqui and Vice President Nasir Mehmood Chaudhry, emphasized that in today’s era of start-ups, incubators, and innovation-driven enterprises, it is imperative for educational institutions and industrial sectors to work hand in hand.
They stated that such synergy is essential to equip graduating students with the practical knowledge, entrepreneurial mindset, and industry-relevant skills needed to establish successful business ventures. “Pakistan needs more job creators than job seekers.
This can only be achieved if universities and industries jointly guide students to transform their ideas into viable enterprises,” said Nasir Mansoor.
Highlighting ICCI’s active role, he noted that the Chamber has already signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with several leading universities in the region to strengthen industry-academia coordination. As part of its initiative, ICCI has proposed that universities allow final-semester students to engage with chambers of commerce and be placed in industries matching their academic background and interests.
This hands-on exposure would prepare them to become entrepreneurs who contribute meaningfully to national growth.
He reiterated that ICCI is fully committed to promoting entrepreneurship and is ready to extend all-out cooperation to the government and educational institutions to create a productive ecosystem that supports innovation, industrial development, and job creation.
“The future of our economy depends on how effectively we nurture our youth by connecting their academic training with real-world industrial demands,” he added.
The ICCI leadership called upon all stakeholders, policymakers, academia, and the private sector to join hands in fostering a knowledge-based economy where entrepreneurial ventures become the backbone of national development.
