Lahore Literary Festival begins in New York on high note

NEW YORK, May 8 (APP): The Lahore Literary Festival (LLF) got underway  at Asia Society Saturday night with a sterling performance by Pakistani singer Zeb Bangash before a packed house.

On Sunday, panel discussions, spread over three sessions, are set to
take place on a wide variety of subjects — fiction and nonfiction writing, music, arts, popular culture, and politics.

LLF in New York, which is being co-presented with the Asia Society, will
be rounded off Sunday evening with Qawwali by an eight-member ensemble — the Saami Brothers.

RAWALPINDI, May 7 (APP): Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid Saturday said the people hurling baseless rigging allegations against Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) had come up with a new charge.
The Panama Papers did not contain the name of Prime Minister
Muhammad Nawaz Sharif but the same people were demanding his
resignation he said while inaugurating Rawal Expo organised by
Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industries (RCCI) here.
He said Prime Minister had already faced such allegations and would
again emerge triumphant as the opposition had made no demand
regarding PM’s resignation in its Term of Reference (ToRs).

ISLAMABAD, May 07 (APP): Minister for Information, Broadcasting
and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid said on Saturday that
defeat of Zac Goldsmith in London’s mayoral election had deflated
the balloon of Imran Khan’s so-called popularity abroad.
The minister, in a statement here, said,”Pakistanis in London by voting for their compatriot Sadiq Khan have not only proven their patriotism but also exposed the hollow claims of Imran Khan’s popularity among the expatriots.”
The victory of Sadiq Khan and defeat of Zac Goldsmith had raised ‘Ro Imran Ro’ (weep Imran weep) slogan even in the United Kingdom capital, he said.

Laws Review Committee discusses legislation proposals

ISLAMABAD, May 07 (APP): Minister for Finance Senator Muhammad
Ishaq Dar Saturday said the government was sincere to resolve the issue of Terms of Reference (ToRs) for judicial commission with consensus of all the political parties.
The opposition should display some seriousness to get the matter resolved instead doing politics over it, he said while talking to a
private news channel.
He said the government was ready to hold dialogue with all the political parties for developing consensus but it would not be allowed to stop the country’s development process in the wake of political point scoring.

CCOP approves divestment of govt’s KAPCO shares

ISLAMABAD, May 07 (APP): The Cabinet Committee on Privatization
(CCOP) Saturday accorded approval for divestment of the government’s residual shareholdings in Kot Adu Power Company Ltd (KAPCO).
The committee also approved sale of shares of Mari Petroleum Company
Ltd through the domestic stock exchange or offering them to the shareholders.
Finance Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar chaired the meeting of
the CCOP here.

ECC approves two-month salary for PSM employees

ISLAMABAD, May 07 (APP): The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet Saturday accorded approval for payment of two months salaries to the employees of Pakistan Steel Mills, amounting to Rs 858 million.
The ECC, which met here with Finance Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar in the chair, also allowed WAPDA to raise a loan of Rs 25 billion from local banks under the sovereign guarantee of the Government of Pakistan for making payment of arrears for Net Hydel Profits (NHP) to the Khyber Pakhtunkhua (KP) government, during the current fiscal year 2015-16.
A total amount of Rs 70 billion was settled between the federal and
KP governments on account of uncapped NHP as full and final settlement of the claims.

KARACHI, May 7 (APP): A model of `Mini-Pakistan’ would be put up
in the precincts of the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
The Adviser to the Prime Minister on National History and Literary
Heritage, Irfan Siddiqui, said adding that the `Mini-Pakistan’ model would reflect the image of the entire country.
Mr. Siddiqui expressed these views during a visit to Karachi Chamber of
Commerce and industry (KCCI) here Saturday.

PM’s sons doing legal business abroad: Salman

ISLAMABAD, May 07 (APP): Salman Shahbaz Sharif, son of Punjab
Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Saturday said the sons of
Prime Minister had established legitimate business abroad.
In his opinion, his cousins Hussain and Hassan were doing legitimate business aborad and there was nothing wrong in doing business outside Pakistan, he added.
Talking to a private channel, he said Hassan and Hussain were sent in exile and there they established their business without taking any favour from the Pakistani government.

NBF plans literary ceremonies, visits of students at Shehr-e-Kitab

ISLAMABAD, May 7 (APP): National Book Foundation (NBF) plans to to immediately prepare a roadmap for the guidance of book lovers to reach the location of “Shehr-e-Kitab” and to display it at appropriate corners of the city.
Chairing a high level meeting, Managing Director NBF, Prof. Dr. Inam Ul Haq Javied said literary ceremonies and visits of students from universities, colleges, schools and cultural departments would be started soon.
“We are also forwarding to establish “Shehr-e-Kitab” at Karachi and Peshawar which was announced by the Advisor to PM, Irfan Siddiqui while inaugurating “Sheher-e-Kitab” at Islamabad” he added, according to news-release issued here on Saturday.
