CIMMYT-USAID-PARC Annual AIP Maize Working Group Meeting

ISLAMABAD, May 10 (APP): The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) and other Partners convened a two-day annual Maize Working Group meeting under Agricultural Innovation Program (AIP) for Pakistan.

While officially opening the meeting here, the Chairman PARC Dr. Nadeem Amjad said that the maize was the third most important cereal crop in Pakistan.

The average yield of maize in Pakistan, currently around 4 ton/ha, was one of the highest in South Asia, he remarked.

PM Sharif greets Gilani on recovery of abducted son

ISLAMABAD, May 10 (APP): Prime Minister, Muhammad Nawaz
Sharif Tuesday congratulated Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, the former Prime Minister on the safe return of his abducted son Ali Haider Gilani, after three years.

Ali Haider was abducted on May 9, 2013 from Lahore and was recovered in a military operation in Ghazni, Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a letter expressed the hope that Ali Haider Gilani would meet his family soon.

Quetta blast: Two cops die, five injured

QUETTA, May 10 (APP): At least two personnel of Traffic Police were killed and five others including two policemen and three civilians were injured in a bomb blast hit a Traffic Police Post outside the gate of the University of Balochistan in the provincial capital, here on Tuesday.

The Home Minister Balochistan, Mir Sarfaraz Bugti confirmed the incident and said that the terrorists attacked a traffic police post with bomb.

“The saboteurs carried out a bomb explosion in order to target a Traffic Police Post set up outside main gate of the University of Balochistan,” he said.

ISLAMABAD, May 10 (APP): Minister of State for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Saira Afzal Tarar Tuesday said
accountability of all those who had offshore companies according to
the Panama Papers, should be held.
The opposition parties, however, were avoiding accountability of
their party leaders, whose names were mentioned in the Panama Papers, she said while talking to PTV.
She said the Terms of References (ToRs) framed by the government for the judicial commission to probe Panama Papers were comprehensive. The government, however, was ready to talk with the opposition to sort out the issue, she added.

Rs 5 billion compensation funds released to TDPs so far: Abdul Qadir Baloch

ISLAMABAD, May 10 (APP): Minister for States and Frontier Regions
(SAFRON) Lt. General (Retd) Abdul Qadir Baloch on Tuesday said the government was effectively compensating Temporarily Displaced Persons (TDPs) of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).
The minister during the question-hour told the Senate that the
Prime Minister had approved a summary for the compensation funds in
the form of Citizen Losses Compensation Programme (CLCP) for FATA and so far, funds to the tune of Rs 5 billion had been released to FATA Secretariat under the programme.
He said the Finance Department, FATA Secretariat had transferred
Rs 1935.440 million for 5576 houses as per request received from Political Agent, South Waziristan Agency.

Former PM Gilani's abducted son recovered from Afghanistan: FO confirms

ISLAMABAD, May 10 (APP): The Foreign Office on Tuesday confirmed the recovery of Ali Haider Gilani, the son of former Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani from Ghazni in a U.S-Afghan joint operation.

The Foreign Office said the Afghan National Security Adviser Mohammad Hanif Atmar informed PM’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz on telephone about the recovery of Ali Haider Gilani.

“The son of former Prime Minister of Pakistan has been recovered today in a joint operation carried out by the Afghan and US security forces in Ghazni, Afghanistan,” the Foreign Office statement said issued here.

RAWALPINDI May 10 (APP): Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif
on Tuesday thanked Commander of Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan (RSMA), Gen John Nicholson and Afghanistan Security Forces for recovery of Ali Haider Gillani in a successful operation in Afghanistan.
Ali Haider Gillani, the son of former Prime Minister Yusaf Raza Gillani was kidnapped in 2013 and was recovered on Tuesday morning.

Ambassador Javed Malik meets Shaikh Nasser Al Khalifa

BAHRAIN, May 10 (APP): Pakistan’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of
Bahrain, Javed Malik met Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the son
of King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa and his special representative on Youth, Sports and Charity Affairs on Tuesday.
Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa expressed his appreciation for the positive role being played by Pakistani expats in Bahrain, and said that his country attaches a lot of importance to its relations with Pakistan.
Ambassador Javed Malik said that while the relations between both countries are rooted in history, it would be equally vital to engage the youth from both countries to maintain and expand these ties.

All sports boards answerable to Parliament: Pirzada

ISLAMABAD, May 10 (APP): Minister for Inter Provincial Coordination Riaz Hussain Pirzada Tuesday said all sports boards including that of cricket were answerable to the parliament.
During a discussion in the Senate on the adjournment motion regarding mismanagement of affairs in the Pakistan Cricket Board, the minister said officials of the Pakistan Cricket Board would be
summoned to the meeting of the Senate’s concerned standing committee in Lahore to ask about the relevant issues.
He said the government was taking concrete measures to promote
sports activities and in this regard Sports University would be set up
in the country.

EU providing adequate funds to KP Government for education uplift: Ambassador

Jean-Francois Cautain in the one day seminar on the evolving relations between European Union and Pakistan in the Sir Sahibzada Abdul Qayyum Hall of the University of Peshawar.
