Pakistan, US have strong collaboration in counter-terrorism: FO Spokesman

ISLAMABAD, May 12 (APP): Foreign Office Spokesman Nafees Zakariya on Thursday said Pakistan and the United States have strong collaboration in counter-terrorism.

Responding to a question at a weekly media briefing here, the spokesman said terrorism was a global issue and it should not be left on one country.

He expressed the hope that the international community, especially the United States will continue its cooperation with Pakistan in the fight against terrorism.

KARACHI, May 12 (APP): National Champion of Snooker, Asjad Iqbal said,”I am optimist to win the title of Asian Championship to be held in UAE because we are focusing more on practice.”

He expressed these views while talking to APP on Thursday at one week-long training and practice camp set up at a local hotel.

The camp was established by Pakistan Billiard and Snooker Association (PBSA) on May 10.

29 Special Economic Zones to be established under CPEC

ISLAMABAD, May 12 (APP): The government will establish 29 new Special Economic Zones under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to promote business activities and attract massive investment in different sectors of the country.

Addressing a press briefing here on Thursday, the Executive Director
General Board of Investment (BoI), Dr Rania Ahsan said that out of total investment of $46 billion under CPEC, 76 percent would be invested in the energy projects.

She said that the BOI was playing important role in enhancing local and foreign investment in the country.

LAHORE, May 12 (APP): Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has said that the target of rapid development can only be achieved through promotion of education.

He expressed these views while talking to elected representatives, here on Thursday. The CM said that education was the only way to cope with the challenges like poverty, unemployment and ignorance faced by the country. He said that Punjab government had adopted a solid policy to establish education sector on strong foundation in the province.

He said a comprehensive programme of revolutionary reforms was being implemented in the education sector and revolutionary steps taken for the promotion of quality education and uplift of education sector.

Nisar for Heads of NADRA, Passports Dept. to facilitate general public

ISLAMABAD, May 12 (APP): Minister for Interior, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Thursday directed Heads of National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and Passport and Immigration Department that senior officers should remain stationed at their Centers to evaluate issues faced by local people in getting passport and CNICs.

Issuing directions in a meeting, he asked Chairman NADRA and Director General Passport to nominate senior officers who should personally visit service centers for a month and inspect working of these centers with a view to address grievances of the public.

He directed that role of middlemen or agents at Centers of NADRA and Passport Office should completely be eliminated to lessen problems, faced by ordinary people.

F-16s issue being pursued actively: Secretary Defence

ISLAMABAD, May 12 (APP): Secretary Ministry of Defence Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Alam Khattak Thursday informed the Senate Standing Committee on Defence that the F-16s issue was being pursued actively with United States.

In an in-camera meeting of the committee, chaired by Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, the secretary along with his team briefed the parliamentarians on the issue of sale of F-16 aircraft to Pakistan, which had been held up by the US Congress.

The committee was also informed that “out of four ships promised to the Pakistan Navy, only one has been delivered and there is procrastination on three others ships, although similar agreements had been signed with other countries,” said a press release.

ISLAMABAD, May 12 (APP): Members of the National Assembly Daniyal Aziz and Talal Chaudary Thursday said that procedure for questions and answers was well-defined in the Parliament.

Addressing a joint press conference, the leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) said that the opposition had been making futile efforts to make the matters complexed as they had been frisking away from the Judicial Commission to consider the Panama Leaks.

The PML-N leaders said that they had already given clear answers to the questions earlier raised by the opposition in Wednesday’s press talk thus these do not require any further elaborations.

Aqeel won his quarterfinal against Mudassar Murtaza after a healthy competition. Aqeel will take on Arham in semifinal who beat Usman Rafique. Arham. Arham showed great excitement and skill against experienced opponent.

ISLAMABAD May 12 (APP): Investiture ceremony was held to confer operational and non-operational Military awards upon officers and airmen of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) for their distinguished services, at Air Headquarters here on Thursday.

Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman, Chief of the Air Staff was chief guest on the occasion, PAF news release stated.

In the Ceremony, 30 Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Military) PAF Officers, 16 Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (Military) and 08 Tamgha-i-Basalat were conferred upon PAF Officers, while 15 Tamgha-i-Khidmat (Military) Class-I were conferred upon PAF JCOs.

Pakistan summons Bangladeshi diplomat to protest hanging

ISLAMABAD, May 12 (APP): Pakistan Thursday lodged a strong protest against the hanging of Motiur Rahman Nizami by Bangladesh, on the alleged crimes committed before December 1971 through a “flawed judicial process.”

The Acting High Commissioner of Bangladesh was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the Director General (South Asia and SAARC) and a strong protest was lodged at the unfortunate hanging, a statement from the Foreign Office said.

“The attempts by the Government of Bangladesh to malign Pakistan, despite our keen desire to develop brotherly relations with it, are regrettable,” Foreign Office said.
