Serving others on Eid, butchers miss their own celebrations

MULTAN, Jun 09 (APP): While most people celebrated Eid-ul-Azha with their families, many butchers like Irfan and Altaf spent all three days in big cities, far from home, working from morning to sunset to earn a better living.
Irfan and Altaf belong to Vehari, but this year they took their teams to bigger cities like Lahore and Multan, where the demand and the rates are higher.
“My children are in Vehari. I couldn’t spend Eid with them, but this work helps me feed them better,” said Irfan, with a mix of pride and sadness. He leads a team of three helpers who handled ‘qurbani’ duties across city neighbourhoods.
They charged Rs 20,000 for big animals and Rs 6,000 for smaller ones. With strong hands and sharp tools, each team took about 90 minutes for a cow or bull and 50 minutes for goats or sheep.
“The first day was the busiest. We made double the income compared to the second and third day,” Altaf shared while wrapping up his last assignment. “People want the job done early in the morning, so we start soon after Eid prayer.”
Their average schedule included five to six big animals per day, and the earnings were split among team members. The work is tiring, but the results are worth it. “This is our main season. The money from these three days helps us survive for months,” Irfan said.
Despite the good income, the emotional cost is high. “My kids kept calling me on video. They wanted me to come home, but I was booked for work every hour,” Altaf said, with emotion in his voice.
Still, both butchers say they feel proud to be part of this sacred practice. “Qurbani is an ‘ibadat’. People trust us to do it properly. We try our best to stay neat, fast, and respectful,” said Irfan.
As the third day came to an end, they packed their tools and got ready to return home. “Now, it’s our turn to celebrate Eid , even if it’s a little late,” Altaf said with a smile.

Zero Waste Drive continues in ICT on 3rd day of Eid

0
ISLAMABAD, Jun 09 (APP): The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration released data on the third day of Eid, showing steady progress in the ongoing zero waste campaign.
According to data, a total of 1,865 tonnes of animal waste had been collected and disposed of during the first two days of Eid.
The district administration reported that waste from 111,190 sacrificial animals had been gathered across urban and rural areas. This included waste from 65,138 smaller animals such as goats and sheep, and 46,052 larger animals like cows and camels.
On the second day alone, sanitation teams collected 502 tonnes of waste. According to the figures, this included waste from 17,695 small and 12,373 large animals.
In this regard, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon said that all sacrificial sites were promptly washed with rose water and disinfectants to avoid any health risks or bad smell. He added that dedicated teams had been active across both the urban sectors and rural zones of the capital.
The DC said that monitoring of the sanitation drive is being conducted through a third-party inspection system and drone surveillance. Additionally, the Safe City Control Room is also helping monitor the progress of the operation in real time.
“All officials have been in the field since the first day of Eid,” said Irfan Memon, while assuring that the campaign will continue until every area is cleared of waste.
He further noted that the goal of the operation is not only cleanliness but also to maintain the city’s environment. “Keeping Islamabad clean is a collective responsibility,” he said.
The administration has urged residents to avoid throwing animal waste in open areas. They have asked citizens to report unattended waste or sanitation complaints to the helpline, so teams can respond quickly.
The zero waste drive is part of a broader Eid sanitation plan launched before the festival. Under the plan, the city was divided into different zones, with field teams and machinery deployed to collect animal waste without delay.
Mobile units, garbage trucks, and loaders were seen moving across Islamabad, collecting waste from neighbourhoods and transporting it to designated landfill sites. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) jointly managed the cleanup efforts, backed by ICT administration.
The administration has also launched an awareness campaign through social media and public announcements, asking people to cooperate and follow the city’s waste disposal guidelines.
Authorities said that despite the large number of animals sacrificed this year, the situation remained under control due to early preparations and quick response from teams on the ground.
The DC said that citizens’ cooperation made a major difference in managing the high volume of waste and maintaining order in public spaces.
As the third day of Eid comes to a close, the operation is set to continue until all reported waste has been collected. The administration has promised to keep sanitation teams active until every complaint is resolved and all locations are cleared.
The Eid zero waste drive reflects the city’s growing focus on public hygiene and responsible management of festive activities.

Dr. Franka appreciated the Commissioner’s leadership and the concrete measures undertaken to strengthen the city’s polio eradication initiatives.
During the meeting, the epidemiological significance of Karachi as a core polio reservoir was underscored—owing to its large, heterogeneous population and continuous population movement, which present complex challenges to eradication efforts.
Both parties emphasized the importance of maintaining high-quality surveillance and vaccination coverage to interrupt transmission.
The discussion also focused on sustaining momentum toward eradication goals, including continued CDC technical assistance and capacity building of Health Department staff.
The critical role of NSTOP officers in supporting District Emergency Operations Centers (DEOCs) was highlighted as a key element of the response structure.
The active role of the Deputy Commissioners across Karachi was also acknowledged, particularly their continued leadership and on-ground coordination in supporting the polio eradication cause.
Their commitment to ensuring effective implementation of polio campaigns and rapid response efforts has been instrumental in driving progress.
Commissioner Karachi, Syed Hasan Naqvi, reiterated the need to maintain NSTOP’s support in core reservoir districts and stressed the importance of enhancing the capacity of frontline workers (FLWs) at the national level.
He advocated for providing FLWs with a conducive working environment and proposed organizing appreciation events to recognize their dedication and hard work—an essential step to boost morale and sustain motivation across the frontline workforce.
As a token of appreciation, souvenirs were presented to the CDC delegation in recognition of their ongoing support.
