Pakistan ready to discuss arms control and restraint measures with India: FO spokesman

ISLAMABAD, April 7 (APP): Foreign Office Spokesman Nafees Zakaria Thursday said Pakistan had taken note of US President Barack Obama statement after Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) and was ready to discuss with India arms control and restraint measures for peace and security of South Asia.

President Obama after the NSS had called for seeing  “progress in Pakistan and India, that subcontinent, making sure that as they develop military doctrines, that they are not continually moving in the wrong direction.”

Describing as “significant event from Pakistan’s perspective in many ways” the outcome of the 4th Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, the Foreign Office spokesman told a briefing here that Pakistan received a broad appreciation at the summit over its steps taken for the security and safety of its nuclear weapons.

ISLAMABAD, Apr 7 (APP): The government on Thursday reiterated its resolve to bring down the poverty level to zero by adopting pro-poor investments, enhancing economic growth rate and further strengthening social safety nets.

“Poverty in Pakistan is declining”, said Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar while addressing the participants of a seminar on “Poverty estimation methodology, poverty in Pakistan and understanding the trends and the way forward.”

Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal co-chaired the seminar with the Finance Minister.

UNITED NATIONS, Apr 6 (APP): Pakistan has assailed the double standards practiced by some states, which preach nuclear disarmament but fail to take necessary steps themselves. Speaking in a session of the UN Disarmament Commission, a subsidiary of the General Assembly, Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi said that a handful of nuclear weapon states advocate abstinence for others but are unwilling to give up their large inventories of nuclear weapons or their modernization.”This doublespeak has only aggravated the sense of insecurity among other states,” she told the 35-member commission.
