UNITED NATIONS, Jan 26 (APP):An Ambassadorial meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Member States, convened by Pakistan, Wednesday condemned the recent abhorrent act of desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden as well as in the Netherlands.

In a statement, the meeting said those vile acts were recent manifestations of Islamophobia.

Pakistan is the current Chair of the ICFM (Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers).

The meeting, which was presided over by Pakistan’s Ambassador Munir Akram, also decided to organize a special meeting at the UN in New York to commemorate the Day to Combat Islamophobia in accordance with the landmark resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly last year.

“Through this event, the OIC countries would call for international solidarity and cooperation in combating and dismantling anti-Muslim rhetoric and practices including racial profiling, discrimination, negative stereotyping and stigmatization of Muslims” the Pakistani envoy said. As a follow-up of the resolution, he added, “the OIC will urge the UN Secretary-General to formulate an action plan, in coordination with the OIC countries, to halt and reverse Islamophobia” .

The Pakistani envoy also informed the OIC meeting that On international Women’s Day (8 March), Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will host and chair a High-Level Conference in New York on Women in Islam.

The OIC Member States greatly appreciated and reiterated their strong support to Pakistan towards the initiatives during this meeting, it was pointed out.

Among other agenda items, Wednesday’s meeting of the OIC endorsed Tajikistan’s candidature for election to the UN Security Council for the term 2028-2029.

Ambassador Riyad Mansour, Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, briefed the OIC meeting on the recent disturbing developments in Palestine, Jerusalem including the violations of the sanctity of the Al Aqsa Mosque.

Global growth to slow to 1.9% in 2023, warn UN economists; Pakistan's prospects 'challenging'

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 25 (APP):Senior UN economists warned Wednesday that intersecting crises are likely to add further damage to the global economy, with growth set to slow from three per cent in 2022 to 1.9 per cent this year, and that prospects for Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were “more challenging” that other South Asian countries.

This will be one of the lowest growth rates in recent decades, apart from during the 2007-8 financial crisis and the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the UN World Economic Situation and Prospects Report, released on Wednesday.

“In most countries we expect that private consumption and investment will weaken due to incomes and higher income rates”, said Ingo Pitterle, Senior Economist at the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). “Several countries will see a mild recession before growth is forecast to pick up in the second half of this year and into 2024”.

The findings come amid the backdrop of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and resulting food and energy crises, surging inflation, debt tightening, as well as the climate emergency.

In the near term, the economic outlook is gloomy and uncertain with global growth forecast to moderately pick up to 2.7 per cent in 2024.

However, this is highly dependent on the pace and sequence of further monetary tightening – rising interest rates – the consequences of the war in Ukraine, and the possibility of further supply-chain disruptions.

In South Asia, the report said that the economic outlook has significantly deteriorated due to high food and energy prices, monetary tightening and fiscal vulnerabilities, with average GDP growth is projected to moderate from 5.6 per cent in 2022 to 4.8 per cent in 2023.

“Growth in India is expected to remain strong at 5.8 per cent, albeit slightly lower than the estimated 6.4 per cent in 2022, as higher interest rates and a global slowdown weigh on investment and exports, the report said, adding that “The prospects are more challenging for other economies in the region. Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka sought financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2022.”

The report warns that the findings also threaten the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“This is not the time for short-term thinking or knee-jerk fiscal austerity that exacerbates inequality, increases suffering and could put the SDGs farther out of reach. These unprecedented times demand unprecedented action,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.

“This action includes a transformative SDG stimulus package, generated through the collective and concerted efforts of all stakeholders,” he added.

Slow growth, high inflation and mounting debt burdens are threatening hard-won gains in achieving the Global development goals.

Both developed and developing countries are threatened with the prospects of recession during this year, according to the report.

Growth momentum significantly weakened in the United States, the European Union and other developed economies in 2022. This adversely impacted the rest of the global economy in multiple ways.

Tightening global financial conditions coupled with a strong dollar, exacerbated fiscal and debt vulnerabilities in developing countries.

The analysis found that over 85 per cent of central banks worldwide tightened monetary policy and raised interest rates in quick succession since late 2021, to tame inflationary pressures and avoid a recession.

Global inflation which reached a multi-decade high of about 9 per cent in 2022, is projected to ease but remain elevated at 6.5 per cent in 2023.

The report found that most developing countries saw a slower job recovery in 2022 and continue to face relatively high levels of unemployment.

Disproportionate losses in women’s employment during the initial phase of the pandemic have not been fully reversed, with improvements mainly arising from a recovery in the informal sector.

Slower growth, coupled with elevated inflation and mounting debt vulnerabilities, threatens to further set back hard-won achievements in sustainable development, it warns.

DESA points out that already in 2022, the number of people facing acute food insecurity had more than doubled compared to 2019, reaching almost 350 million.

A prolonged period of economic weakness and slow income growth would not only hamper poverty eradication, but also constrain countries’ ability to invest in the SDGs more broadly, it states.

“The global community needs to step up joint efforts to avert human suffering and support an inclusive and sustainable future for all,” said Li Junhua, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for DESA.

The report calls for governments to avoid fiscal austerity, which would stifle growth and disproportionately affect the most vulnerable groups, as well as hinder progress in gender equality and development prospects, for generations.

It calls for reallocation and reprioritization in public spending policy, through direct interventions that will create jobs and reinvigorate growth.

This will require strengthening social protection systems and ensuring continued support through targeted and temporary subsidies, cash transfers, and discounts on utility bills, and can be complemented with reductions in consumption taxes or customs duties, it states.

The report points to strategic public investments in education, health, digital infrastructure, new technologies and climate change mitigation and adaptation to achieve large social returns, accelerate productivity growth, and strengthen resilience to economic, social and environmental shocks.

It estimates that additional SDG financing needs in developing countries, amount to several trillion dollars per year.

Urgent stronger international commitment is urgently needed to expand access to emergency financial assistance; restructure and reduce debt burdens across developing countries; and scale up SDG financing, the report warns.

Court grants police 2-day physical remand of Fawad

Fawad Chaudhry sent to jail on judicial remand

ISLAMABAD, Jan 25 (APP):A local court of Islamabad on Wednesday granted the police a two-day physical remand of PTI leader Chaudhry Fawad Hussain in an FIR for inciting violence against the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The court instructed the Islamabad Police to produce the accused again on the completion of his remand time on January 27.

Judicial Magistrate Naveed Khan announced the two-page verdict which was earlier reserved into the matter. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) leader was produced before the court in the case regarding his “provocative speech” about the ECP officials and their families.

Earlier during hearing, the prosecutor prayed the court to grant the police an eight-day physical remand of the accused.

ECP’s counsel Saad Hassan read out the contents of the first information report (FIR) before the court and said the accused had used the word ‘munshi’ for the institution.

He said the ECP was a constitutional institution and it had all powers to conduct elections in the country but it was being targeted deliberately. The provocative language used by Fawad Chaudhry in his speech was aimed at instigating the public against the ECP. He had asked the PTI workers to reach the houses of ECP officials.

The lawyer said Fawad wanted to promote hatred against the ECP and there was sufficient evidence available in the form of electronic data in that regard. The accused had admitted his controversial statement when he (lawyer) was reading out it, he added.

The ECP’s lawyer said the people who had supported Fawad’s assertions in his speech should also be unearthed. An anti-ECP campaign was launched based on his speech and the police had to investigate him about those remarks.

Fawad adopted the stance that the charges of sedition were also added in the FIR against him. He claimed that he was not delivering a speech, rather he was talking to a news channel, and it seemed that as per the plaintiff’s lawyer criticism was a treason act, .

He further said that his statement was his party’s policy as he was the spokesperson of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. It was not necessary that any such statement was also his own stance.

He said the Lahore Police handed him over to the Islamabad Police after arresting him. He was a senior lawyer, parliamentarian and a former federal minister, and unfortunately such fabricated cases were being initiated.

He prayed the court to terminate the FIR against him.

The court reserved the judgement, which was announced after some time.

Fawad Chaudhry’s brother Faraz Chaudhry was also present in the courtroom. Fawad Chaudhry was produced before the court amid foolproof security arrangements in place.

The FIR registered at the Kohsar Police Station on the complaint of ECP Secretary Umar Hameed accused Fawad of “inciting violence against a constitutional institution”. It was registered under sections 153-A (promotion of enmity between groups), 506 (criminal intimidation), 505 (statement conducing to public mischief) and 124-A (sedition) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
