CS orders for effective axle load management system

LAHORE, Jan 08 (APP):Chief Secretary Punjab Zahid Akhtar Zaman on Monday directed the transport department
to make the axle load management system more effective in the province.
He gave this directive while presiding over a meeting at the Civil Secretariat.
The meeting decided that the toll tax on all roads would be collected online to
ensure transparency.
The chief secretary said that axle load management was being successfully implemented
on 1700 kilometers of highways in the province and permanent weigh stations had been established
at nine places in the province for checking freight vehicles. He said that as per law, an action was
being taken against vehicles for overloading.
The chief secretary said that roads built at a cost of billions of rupees were damaged due to non-implementation
of axle load laws, adding that accidents and damage to roads could be avoided through axle load management.
He lauded Secretary Transport Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi and Chairman PITB Faisal Yusuf for their efforts in the successful implementation of axle load management system.
The chief secretary said that instead of constructing new roads, priority was given to the repair
and reconstruction of 133 inter-district roads and work on 104 roads of these roads would be
completed soon.
Transport Secretary Ahmed Javed Qazi gave a detailed briefing at the meeting. He said that signboards
regarding the weight limit for freight vehicles had been installed at the entrances of all the districts.
He said that with the assistance of the National Highways and Motorway Police, Punjab Highways Police, axle load rules had been implemented on 17 important corridors.
The administrative secretaries of different departments, including law, communications and works, officials of Punjab Highways Police and officers concerned attended the meeting while all divisional commissioners participated through video link.

Rupee gains 11 paisa against Dollar

ISLAMABAD, Jan 8 (APP): The Pakistani Rupee on Monday witnessed an appreciation of 11 paisa against the US Dollar in the interbank trading and closed at Rs281.28 against the previous day’s closing of Rs281.39.

However, according to the Forex Association of Pakistan (FAP), the buying and selling rates of the Dollar in the open market stood at Rs281 and Rs283.5 respectively.

The price of the Euro increased by 21 paisa to close at Rs307.55 against the last day’s closing of Rs307.34, according to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

The Japanese Yen remained unchanged and closed at Rs1.94, whereas an increase of 58 paisa was witnessed in the exchange rate of the British Pound, which traded at Rs357.25 compared to the last closing of Rs356.67.

The exchange rates of the Emirates Dirham and the Saudi Riyal decreased by 03 each to close at Rs 76.58 and Rs 75.00 respectively.

Ashrafi strongly condemns terror attack on police protecting polio teams

ISLAMABAD, Jan 8 (APP): Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi, Chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council and Special Representative of the Prime Minister for Religious Harmony and Pakistan Diaspora in the Middle East and Islamic Countries, has vehemently denounced the terrorist assault targeting police officials safeguarding polio workers in the Bajaur district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In a message of condolence, Hafiz Tahir Ashrafi extended his prayers for the forgiveness of the martyred policemen. He emphasized that antagonistic forces within Pakistan are obstructing the country’s efforts to eliminate polio. Ashrafi expressed hope that these adversaries will not achieve their malicious goals, and he believes that the sacrifices made by security personnel will eventually yield positive outcomes.

Ashrafi emphasized the need for a robust nationwide awareness campaign on polio, highlighting the government’s unwavering commitment to the success of this initiative. He expressed confidence that due to the concrete measures implemented by the government, polio will soon be eradicated from Pakistan.
Tahir Ashrafi commended the bravery and dedication of polio workers operating in remote regions, along with the security personnel collaborating with them.

Desilting of canals underway in Bahawalpur

BAHAWALPUR, Jan 08 (APP):The desilting of canals of the Bahawalpur Zone is underway.
According to Chief Engineer Irrigation Bahawalpur Region Rana Zulfikar Ali, in the first phase, 1.6 miles of Ford Wah Canal, the Jeevan minor canal of Bahawalnagar was cleaned.
The Irrigation Department staff has completed the canal cleaning by removing 0.23 million cubic feet of silt.
 Cleaning the 1L/6R Minor Canal of Hakra Bahawalnagar division is in progress.
 So far, 2 miles of the canal have been cleaned and 0.24 million cubic feet of silt has been removed.

ECP determined to conduct elections within specified time: Kanwar Dilshad

ISLAMABAD, Jan 08 (APP):Former secretary Election Commission of Pakistan( ECP) Kanwar Dilshad said on Monday that Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi as a focal person of the federal government had rightly stated that the general public should not give any attention to rumors.
As far as elections were concerned ECP was determined to conduct elections within a specified time, he said while taking part in a Radio Pakistan programme.
He said although, a Senate resolution for the delay in elections was passed the elections seem to be conducted on  February 8 as per the timeline given by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
He said that maintaining the law and order situation in the country during the elections was the responsibility of caretaker governments in federal and provinces.
He said special arrangements will be made at the more sensitive polling stations.

Pakistan Saudi Arabia sign annual Hajj agreement

ISLAMABAD, Jan 8 (APP):: Caretaker Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Aneeq Ahmed, along with Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah Dr. Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah, signed the annual Hajj agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
According to the spokesman of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Aneeq Ahmed had unveiled the Hajj policy for 2024 in November 2023.
Meanwhile, the International Hajj Expo 2024 commenced in the Saudi city of Jeddah on Monday. During the Expo, additional agreements will be signed to enhance the experience for Hajj pilgrims. A Pakistani delegation will also explore stalls from various companies.

Gold rates decrease by Rs.1,900 per tola

ISLAMABAD, Jan 8 (APP): The per tola price of 24 karat gold decreased by Rs.1,900 and was sold at Rs.216,100 on Monday compared to its sale at Rs.218,000 on last trading day.

The price of 10 grams of 24 karat gold also decreased by Rs.1,629 to Rs.185,271 from Rs.186,900 whereas the prices of 10 gram 22 karat gold went down to Rs.169,832 from Rs.171,325, the All Sindh Sarafa Jewellers Association reported.

The price of per tola and ten gram Silver remained stagnant at Rs.2,660 and 2,280.52 respectively.

The price of gold in the international market decreased by $18 to $2,047 from $.2,065, the Association reported.

HESCO anti- theft drive, 340 more connections detected

HYDERABAD, Jan 08 (APP):The Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) continued its operation against electricity thieves and defaulters on the 124th day in the HESCO region and recovered over 10,117.3 million rupees so far.
HESCO spokesperson informed on Monday that under the campaign to curb electricity theft, an additional 340 connections involved in power theft were apprehended in the last 24 hours, which included 9 commercial and 331 domestic connections, and all those were disconnected, while detection bills of 150,258 units were issued to those consumers involved in power theft, valued at 4.148215 million rupees.
According to the spokesperson, letters have been submitted for the registration of cases against 299 consumers involved in electricity theft at various police stations, leading to the registration of 13 FIRs.
During the campaign, a total of 2,375 cases have been registered, and penalties of over 437.3 million rupees imposed on electricity thieves so far.
