ISLAMABAD, Aug 9 (APP): All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has called for complete shutdown in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) on Tuesday (August 11) to pay glowing tributes to senior Hurriyat leader Sheikh Abdul Aziz on his martyrdom anniversary.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Sheikh Abdul Aziz was shot dead by Indian troops while he was leading a procession from Srinagar to the Line of Control on August 11,2008 against the economic blockade of the Kashmir Valley by Hindu extremists of Jammu.

The APHC spokesman, in a statement, said by observing the shutdown the people of the occupied territory would convey the message to India and the rest of world that they were determined to accomplish the mission of their martyrs at all costs.

He condemned the occupation authorities for shifting the Kashmiri political prisoners from Srinagar Central Jail to jails in Jammu region.

He urged New Delhi to stop its military aggression and stubbornness on the Kashmir dispute and adopt a pragmatic approach to resolve it in accordance with the Kashmiris’ aspirations and the UN resolutions.

Meanwhile, the APHC General Secretary Molvi Bashir Ahmed, in a media interview in Srinagar, welcomed the decision of Pakistan government to rename the Kashmir Highway as Srinagar Highway in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad. He said that such moves showed Pakistan’s commitment to the cause of liberating the occupied territory from the Indian subjugation.

Indian police have shifted the illegally detained General Secretary of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir, Ameer Hamza Shah, from Sopore Police Station to Kot Bhalwal Jail after booking him under draconian law, Public Safety Act.

Srinagar-based human rights activist Khurram Parvez, in an article in the US-based Time magazine, wrote that Indian government made full use of coronavirus lockdowns by passing the domicile rule.

He pointed out that in just more than a month, around 400,000 people have already acquired domicile certificates and added it could alter the results of any referendum seeking people’s opinion for the resolution of the larger, international dispute over control of the territory.

Renowned Kashmiri journalist, Yousuf Jameel, in an article wrote that while people from all walks of life have been facing severe difficulties after the repeal of Kashmir’s special status by Narendra Modi government on August 5, last year, the journalists are also facing hurdles in performing their professional duties.

He maintained that several journalists, who opposed the Indian government’s measures, were charged with sedition and some are still imprisoned.

On the other hand, eminent citizens of India and Pakistan have said that India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party was bent to overturn the Muslim majority character of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. They stated this in a report, titled ‘The Siege: A Year Since Abrogation’ drafted by the members of Jammu and Kashmir Solidarity Group and Pakistan-India People’s Forum for Peace and Democracy.

The comprehensive report based on eyewitness accounts and findings of fact-finding teams, which visited the region, said that New Delhi was committing grave injustices, ranging from kidnapping and torture of minors to decimating the identity of people.

AJK President lauds Kashmiri-Pakistani Diaspora for playing vital role in highlighting the plight of Kashmiris

0

MIRPUR (AJK): Aug 09 (APP): Azad Jammu & Kashmir President Sardar Masood Khan has said that even after a passage of over seven decades of Indian aggression and onslaught, the brave and courageous people of Kashmir have not stepped back an inch from their struggle for liberty and the flame of Azadi (freedom) still burns strong in their hearts.

The President made these remarks while speaking with prominent Diaspora Kashmiri leaders in a web-meeting from his office on Sunday, AJK President office told media Sunday evening.

Participants of the meeting said that major efforts are required towards intensifying awareness on Kashmir at the international arena and in this regard a defined strategy could be adopted by the diaspora community. They said that they are grateful to the leadership of AJK and Pakistan for highlighting the legitimate cause of the Kashmiri people.

The AJK President said that the people of Kashmir have been struggling for long and they have not caved to Indian intimidation. The youth of Kashmir have now become the torch bearers of the freedom struggle and the intensity of the resistance in IOJK has seen an exponential increase. After August 5, he said, the issue of Kashmir had once again been internationalized when the global media and leading parliaments of the world debated on Kashmir. But due to various international events like the Covid-19 pandemic, Brexit and now presidential elections in the US; news and coverage on Kashmir had dwindled, he said.

President Masood Khan has said that India has begun to settle thousands of non-state Hindus from all over India and granted around 400,000 Kashmiri domiciles to them under the illicit New Domicile Rules. Indian businessmen are being granted Indian contracts thereby depriving the local population of economic opportunities.

“Bad news is coming out of IOJK every day. We are running out of time. The time to act is now. India is working overtime to change to local demography and is in the process of administrative reorganization within the disputed territory”, he said.

President AJK informed the participants that we have to take India upon five major fronts: military, political, diplomatic, communication and economic. Our posture, he said, should be proactive and offensive as we are facing a very cunning enemy who has taken refuge in a false narrative on Kashmir.

Referring to his last conversation with Mahathir Mohamad in Putrajaya, Malaysia, the President said very prudent advice was shared with him in which he was told that globally the people of Kashmir should increase their friends and reduce the number of their enemies. He added that we need to make concerted efforts to understand our enemy who has used nothing but brute force against Kashmiris.

The President said that other than mobilizing the international civil society, we must immediately initiate a Boycott, Sanctions and Divestment movement against India. He said that Muslim countries all over the world should also ban the import of all non-Halal products from India.

Participants at the meeting expressed their full support to the government of AJK and Pakistan in helping mobilize support for the Kashmir cause. They informed that renewed level of focused coordination will be commenced in this matter with all stakeholders including various local and international organizations working on Kashmir.

The President praised the endeavors of the Diaspora community in creating critical awareness on Kashmir and for reaching out the international media, their political representatives and the civil societies in the country they reside in. “We are indebted to the diaspora community for helping open up new doors for the Kashmiri people and facilitating debates and discussions on the Kashmir issue and helping to raise the profile of this long-lasting issue”, he said. US academic urges world community to fulfill its pledges to Kashmiris; exposes India’s designs in IIOJK

0

NEW YORK, Aug 08 (APP): An American academic of Kashmiri origin has, in an article published in The Washington Post, called on the international community to allow the long-suffering Kashmiri people the exercise of their UN-pledged right of self-determination, saying they deserve to live a life of dignity and security.

“Kashmiris are in the midst of a dystopian nightmare, one in which each day brings a new government order, policy or law that seeks to further dispossess them of their basic rights, land, resources, identity, and ultimately, lives,” Dr. Hafsa Kanjwal, an assistant professor in South Asian history at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, wrote in her opinion piece: India accelerates its nationalist transformation of Kashmir as the world remains silent.

One year after India illegally revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, she wrote that the fears that the
Hindu-nationalist government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will accelerate an existing settler-colonial project that aims to alter the demographics of the Muslim-majority disputed region have materialized.

“India’s long-standing war crimes in Kashmir— ranging from extrajudicial killings, home demolitions, rapes, use of human shields, arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, mass blinding and torture, to name a few — have been well documented, and endured by a population that has been denied its right to self-determination for more than 72 years,” Dr. Hafsa Kanjwal said.

The most devastating of the administrative changes, which was issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on March 31, under the title “Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Order, 2020,” creates a series of categories through which Indians — who had previously not been able to own land or access government jobs as they were reserved for Kashmir “permanent residents” — will now be able to lay claim to residency rights in what is still a disputed territory, she pointed out.

“The permanent resident category has been done away with, and all Kashmiris will now need to obtain domicile certificates to get residency rights.”

The Washington Post article said: “Since the occupational machinery in Kashmir consists of more than 700,000 Indian forces, as well as thousands of Indian officials who have served in various capacities in Kashmir’s decades-long occupation, the shift toward domicile status is a clear path to demographic change.”

“Most crucially, the order is retrospective, meaning that it includes those who already meet these requirements. Already, as many as 400,000 domicile certificates have been issued (although it remains unclear what percentage of these are non-local applicants), and an estimated 1.74 million Indian workers alone are eligible. And this is just the beginning.”

“But why are these legal changes significant, and why should the international community take note?”
“Various members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party have mentioned their desire to flood the region with Indian Hindus, and Hindu supremacists see the region as integral to the idea of a Hindu nation.”

“Ensuring that Indian settlers — and that is what they will be — are able to claim domicile in Kashmir puts any solution to the long-running disputes further out of reach.”

“Kashmir, which is currently disputed between India and Pakistan, still awaits a resolution, and has been the site of massive resistance to Indian rule. A majority of Kashmiris prefer independence or merger with Pakistan.

As India changes the demographics, those numbers will be deliberately diluted, many fear through ethnic cleansing.
While India claims that removing Article 370 paves the way for “development” and “progress” in the region, indigenous Kashmiris have essentially lost their historic protections in relation to land, access to education and government employment.

The one-year lockdown has resulted in an economic loss of more than $5.3 billion, and most of Kashmir’s industries, including tourism, handicrafts, horticulture, IT and e-commerce, have been shattered.”

“As with other colonial powers, Indian officials are participating in international investment summits parroting Kashmir as a “Land of Opportunity,” setting off a scramble for Kashmir’s resources, which will cause further environmental destruction.”
“India’s then-consul general in New York, Sandeep Chakravorty, chillingly declared last fall that India already has a model — the Israeli one in the occupied West Bank.

The government plans to create separate colonies, or settlements, for the non-locals, mostly migrant laborers, who can now claim domicile.

These settlements will be protected by an ever-expanding military grid and infrastructure.

Some months ago, the Indian army passed around forms in certain localities asking whether locals would be willing to sell their property. Now, it doesn’t even need permission. A recent provision was passed that allows the Indian army special dispensation for carrying out construction activities in areas that it deems “strategic.”

“What is most alarming is that the Modi government has made these momentous changes in the midst of a pandemic.”
“Yet, even this is not surprising.

India’s actions last August have drawn unprecedented global criticism. But now, given that the attention of the international community is fully focused on controlling the coronavirus, the time was opportune to deflect any criticism.”

“India’s actions have led the once dormant “Kashmir issue” to once again be internationalized. It continues to make the region volatile, as evidenced by frequent India-Pakistan cross-border shelling and threat of war, as well as the recent clashes between India and China along the Line of Actual Control.”

“Kashmiris, like all people, deserve to live a life of dignity and security. It is unconscionable that the international community has enabled India’s actions. India must allow access to foreign journalists, human rights observers and international delegations.”

“Most importantly, Kashmiris must be given the right to determine their future, something promised to them by the international community more than 72 years ago. The future of South Asia, and indeed the world, depends on it.”

PM to launch largest one-day plantation of 3.5 mln trees with Tiger Force volunteers: Amin Aslam

ISLAMABAD, Aug 8 (APP): Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam on Saturday said Prime Minister Imran Khan is going to inaugurate the country’s largest one-day tree plantation of 3.5 million saplings across the country on August 9.

On the initiative of the Prime Minister one million Corona Relief Tiger Force (CRTF) youth volunteers would plant over three million saplings which was highest ever number of trees to be planted in the country, said the SAPM addressing a media briefing.

Amin said tree plantation was a perpetual charity where the Holy Prophet (SAW) also emphasised upon to plant a tree even if the day of judgment comes into existence.

Pakistan, he said, was in dire need of plantation to increase its forest cover due to its rising vulnerability to global warming and heatwaves. “The one-day plantation was carried out under the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami project (10BTT) where around 1200 plantation activities are going to be held under this campaign tomorrow.”

He added that a target of 300,000 trees for plantation was set for Sindh, 1.2 million trees in Punjab and two million trees in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) whereas the rest of the federating units had submitted their plantation targets. In the federal capital around 1.2 million saplings would be planted under the initiative.

The SAPM noted that the first billion trees’ target under 10BTT was going to be achieved by June 2021 as the stocks of saplings were augmented from 50 million to 300 million. These saplings would be sufficient to meet the massive afforestation initiative.

He urged the masses including youth, academia, lawyers, journalists and citizens to join the 10BTT one-day plantation to plant maximum saplings.

Amin Aslam informed that recent World Bank study suggested that among the most heat wave affected hotspots, around half a dozen are lying in Pakistan and if left unattended, they would become unlivable places by 2050.

Three districts of SIndh including Sukkur, Mirpur Khas, Hyderabad and Punjab’s districts including Faisalabad, Multan and Lahore would be the most affected due to heat waves.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, he said, was a visionary leader and therefore realizing the risk of global warming in the region decided to launch 10BTT. It was due to his vision that Pakistan managed to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG-13) Climate Action 10 years ahead of its 2030 deadline.

To a question, he highlighted that 5-10 percent plant nurseries under 10BTT were raised by women in the rural areas where the provincial governments were directed to boost their share in this project. It would further strengthen the impoverished women to earn a respectable livelihood by raising plant nurseries.

He added that the country’s first Electric Vehicle Policy was approved where initially two wheeler and three wheeler rickshaws and motorbikes would be launched in the market. The SAPM was going to inaugurate the E-Rickshawa and motorbikes in Lahore during the coming week.

He added the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government was fulfilling its promises made to the masses where the Prime Minister was going to launch the results of Clean and Green Pakistan Index under which 20 cities were judged on 35 quantifiable indicators of cleanliness, solid and liquid waste management. The Ministry of Climate Change was monitoring the indicators for the past nine months, he added.

He said fuel quality was enhanced from Euro-II to Euro-V standards where the quality fuel would be available to masses within next couple of weeks.

Around 30 national parks were established in the country since independence where around 25 percent increase was made by nine new national parks to the existing number. However, a National Park Service was also being established which would generate job opportunities for youth.

Moody’s (the global economic and investment rating institute), he said, had also improved the economic outlook of Pakistan from negative to stable which was a great achievement despite all impediments of global economic crisis and COVID-19 situation.
