Pakistan’s total liquid foreign reserves surge over $ 14.45 billion
KARACHI, May 09 (APP): The total liquid foreign reserves of Pakistan increased to US$ 14,458.9 million while foreign reserves held by State Bank of Pakistan stood at $ 9,120.3 million in the week ended on May 03, 2024.
The SBP, in a statement issued here on Thursday, informed, “foreign reserves held by the central bank increased by $ 1,114 million to $ 9,120.3 million mainly due to receipt of $1.1 billion from IMF as final tranche under SBA program,” during the week under review.
Meanwhile, net foreign reserves held by commercial banks were recorded $ 5,338.6 million, it added.
It is the highest level of country’s total liquid foreign reserves in seven months, since 2 September 2022 when the total reserves stood at $14473.5 million while the central bank held $ 8799.9 million.
In context of the central bank, it was highest level in 9 months. SBP held reserves of $ 9328.6 million on July 15, 2024 while total foreign reserves of the country stood at $ 15,241.5 million.
Total liquid foreign reserves held by the country, in the previous week ended on April 26, 2024, were $ 13,316 million.
Among them foreign reserves held by the central bank were $ 8,006 million while net foreign reserves held by commercial banks were $ 5,310 million.
Law ministry to take firm action to combat smuggling
ISLAMABAD, May 09 (APP): Minister for Law and Justice, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar on Thursday chaired a pivotal meeting aimed at bolstering legal reforms to combat smuggling-related offenses effectively.
The meeting, attended by key figures including Attorney General of Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan and representatives from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), addressed significant delays and shortcomings within the prosecution system concerning anti-smuggling cases.
In response to the identified challenges, several proactive measures were proposed. These include amendments to the Anti-Smuggling Act, the expansion of specialized courts in Lahore, Multan, and Balochistan dedicated to handling smuggling cases, and enhanced monitoring of court performance by the Law Ministry.
Recognizing the crucial role of trained personnel, the Attorney General suggested implementing training programs for prosecutors and investigating officers to elevate performance standards.
In line with this, the Law Minister directed the FBR to present records of pending cases and associated financial implications in the forthcoming meeting, paving the way for targeted action.
Furthermore, in a decisive move, the Law Minister instructed the immediate establishment of a custom court in Multan to reinforce enforcement efforts.
Ministry of Law and Justice remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening legal frameworks and enforcement mechanisms to curb smuggling activities, safeguarding national interests, and upholding the rule of law.

Minister chairs meeting with EDCF, Country Programme mission
ISLAMABAD, May 9 (APP): Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Ahad Khan Cheema, chaired the kickoff meeting of the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) Country Programme Mission, led by Bonhyun Koo, Director of Asia Team, from the Export-Import Bank of Korea (EXIM Bank), said a press release issued here Thursday.
The meeting included members of the EDCF Project Management Consultant (PMC), Secretary EAD and senior officials from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and other key stakeholders.
The federal minister warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed gratitude for the continued support provided by the EXIM Bank and the Government of the Republic of Korea.
He noted that seven ongoing projects, totaling US$ 522 million, were currently being implemented across key sectors, including road infrastructure, information technology and health. He also commended the EXIM Bank for signing the Framework Arrangement (2022-26) and expressed the hope for full utilization of the US$ 1,000 million committed under this agreement. Furthermore, it was noted that 10 pipeline projects have already been shared with the EDCF, and their prompt implementation is anticipated.
The minister further apprised the mission that as part of planning for Mid-term Pipeline Projects, the Ministry has identified new projects in priority sectors such as Information and Communication Technology (ICT), climate change, construction, and transport.
In his concluding remarks, Ahad Khan Cheema reiterated the Government of Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the EDCF and expressed confidence that with improved efficiency in project preparation and implementation, both countries can maximize their collaborative potential.
The meeting concluded with the minister’s thanks to all participants for their valuable contributions.

Pakistan eyes green energy, technology cooperation with China in CPEC 2nd phase
BEIJING, May 9 (APP): Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal has said that China and Pakistan are deepening collaboration on the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), with a focus on green energy and technology cooperation, among others.
Iqbal arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for a visit, the first high-level visit by a Pakistani official to China since Pakistan’s new government came to power. During the visit, Iqbal also held meetings with various Chinese officials.
“China is a historical friend of Pakistan, and has supported us in difficult times,” Iqbal said as he arrived in Beijing, Global Times reported.
Iqbal said that in the first phase of the CPEC, Pakistan’s energy and infrastructure sectors were upgraded, and in the second phase, the agriculture, industry, green energy and technology sectors will be promoted.
In terms of green energy cooperation, Iqbal said in a meeting with China’s Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong in Islamabad on Tuesday that Pakistan aims to establish industrial zones for the manufacturing of electric cars in collaboration with China, leveraging Pakistan’s competitive advantages to reduce overall production costs and create employment opportunities for Pakistani workers, said another separate press release.
During meetings in Beijing, Iqbal also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the high-quality development of the CPEC, outlining future cooperation in such priority sectors as information technology, agriculture modernization, textiles, minerals and renewable energy.
Iqbal also revealed details about enhanced security measures taken by Pakistan to ensure the security of Chinese personnel.
