Palestinian women-led organizations must be at forefront of Gaza aid response: UN

0

UNITED NATIONS, Jun 10 (APP): The UN agency championing gender equality called on Monday for greater investment in Palestinian women-led organizations who are at the forefront of humanitarian operations in the Gaza Strip.

The agency, ‘UN Women’, published its fourth Gender Alert since the war began eight months ago, which examines the immense challenges these organizations face while also highlighting their commitment to save lives.

The series of reports document how the lives of women and girls have deteriorated across sectors such as food security, shelter, health and safety.

The latest data collected in April revealed that over 80 per cent of those surveyed in Gaza report a dependency on food assistance. Furthermore, 83.5 per cent said that the assistance received was not enough to meet their basic family needs.

The Gender Alert details the findings of a UN Women assessment of 25 Palestinian women-led organizations which remain at the forefront of the humanitarian response despite the dire situation.

Together, they maintain a network of 1,575 staff across Gaza and the West Bank, and their offices serve as vital hubs for delivering assistance and coordination.

Nearly 90 per cent of the organizations have experienced damage to their offices and 35 per cent have suffered complete destruction.

“Amid this adversity, close to 60 per cent of organizations report being able to operate at full capacity,” UN Women said.

Additionally, 88 per cent have shifted towards emergency relief, providing essential services such as the distribution of food items, non-food items, cash assistance and protection-related services, including psychosocial support.

At the same time, the organizations face financial struggles as 56 per cent reported decreased funding and 88 per cent have major financial difficulties that hamper their ability to deliver critical services.

UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous said they must be supported.

“The work of women-led organizations in Gaza and the West Bank is as much about the survival of women and girls as it is about maintaining hope, dignity, and the possibility of a better future for those they serve,” she said.

“Investing in their resilience is not just important – it is the key to an inclusive response that leaves no one behind.”

The report called for action to actively fund women-led organizations, which are vital for reaching the women and girls most in need.

Other recommendations include advocating for increased humanitarian access, thus enabling these organizations to expand their life-saving responses, and including women-led organizations in all humanitarian coordination structures to ensure effectiveness and inclusion.

KARACHI, Jun 10 (APP):President Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh on Monday termed State Bank’s decision of reducing policy rate to 20.5% as a step in right direction and hoped to see further reduction in interest rate.
The KCCI president, in a statement issued here, stated that reduction of 150 basis points was less then expectations of  business community but “ We hope that this approach continues in the days to come to gradually bring down the interest rate to single digit.”
He said that lower interest rate in line with the international trends would certainly encourage borrowings by the private sector that would prove favorable for the economy by encouraging business expansion as well as industrialization.
He attributed easing of inflation from 38% to current level of slightly above 11% to administrative measures taken by the government along with improved agricultural production as well as reduction in petroleum price while referring to excellent production of wheat, rice, sugar cane, cotton and maize etc.
He argued that stability in rupee value was also one of the major reasons for easing the inflation as crackdown initiated to deal with black marketing and illegal sale or purchase of dollars and its smuggling outside Pakistan resulted in bringing stability to Pakistani rupee and subsequently eased the inflation.
Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh hoped to see further reduction in interest rate and said that it would be widely welcomed by the entire business community of the country.

Senator Tarar thanked the movers for drawing attention towards the important issue and corrected the mover on deriding the Indus Water Treaty that it was this treaty that made India hesitant at international forums to engage in negotiations cross border water management talks.

The water Indus Treaty was done with India and negotiated through third party, the World Bank, whereas due to low riparian region was facing impacts of reduced water flows from India, he added.

Azam Tarar said, “Climate change is a serious challenge and done by anthropogenic activities post industrial revolution. However, Pakistan due to lying in the Himalyan foothills is most affected by climate change.”

The 2022 unexpected floods left 4.4 million acre crops damaged, one million livestock perished and millions of people affected by heatwaves, he said, adding, “ In order to redress the damages, Kisan package 2022, seeds and agricultural medicines on subsidized rates, climate resilient seeds, establishment of seed developing authority, water storage and drip irrigation mechanisms have been introduced.”

“Our region is the most impacted due to floods that not only damage crop but also soil quality. Pakistan should raise its voice on global forums for climate finance and work on building dams to protect our land. We can benefit from global climate finance with increased share for Pakistan to build dams,” he added.

He said food security was an issue that would aggravate in the coming years as it was witnessed during wheat season and therefore, food security should be on the government’s top priority.
