Commerce minister visits KSA to finalize ‘Investment-Related part of GCC FTA’

ISLAMABAD, Dec 2 (APP): Dr. Gohar Ejaz, Pakistan’s Commerce and Industries Minister, led an official delegation in Saudi Arabia comprising Secretaries of the Ministry of Commerce and Board of Investment (BOI) and officials from the Attorney General’s Office.
He held parleys with the GCC’s Chief Negotiator to finalize the investment-related part of the GCC Free Trade Agreement (FTA), said a press release issued here on Sunday.
The technical teams from the two sides held extensive discussions on the remaining details of the investment chapter, including investment protection and facilitation.
They also discussed the potential impact of the FTA on bilateral trade and investment flows. “This is a major step forward in our efforts to strengthen economic ties between Pakistan and the GCC.” said Ejaz.
The investment chapter is an important part of the agreement, and we are confident that we can reach an agreement soon.
The GCC FTA is expected to boost trade and investment between Pakistan and the GCC.
The agreement is also expected to create new jobs and opportunities for businesses in both regions.
The two sides also discussed the possibility of holding a joint business forum shortly and to promote trade and investment between Pakistan and the GCC.
Mr. Gohar Ejaz thanked the GCC for its warm hospitality.

According to detail, one alleged accused involved in hundi and illegal currency exchange was arrested from Peshawar Cantonment area. During the raid, huge sums of money were also recovered from the accused identified as Haider Ali.
A sum of Rs. 2 million recovered from the alleged accused. Records related to illegal exchange of currency were also recovered from the alleged accused. The accused could not satisfy the authorities regarding the recovered currency. A case has been registered against the accused under the illegal currency Act with further investigation underway.

Amb. Masood Khan briefs two US lawmakers on illegal immigrants’ repatriation from Pakistan

WASHINGTON, Dec 02 (APP): Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Masood Khan, had separate meetings with Congressmen William Keating and Brad Schneider to brief them about the phased repatriation of undocumented foreigners from Pakistan, according to a press release of the Pakistani embassy issued Friday.

The situation in the Middle East was also discussed, and the upward trajectory in Pak-US relations was reviewed, the release said.

Congressman Keating wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “Productive meeting with Pakistani Ambassador Masood Khan regarding the opening of an IOM (International Organization for Migration) facility to process US-bound Afghan allies in Pakistan. As I wrote to the Ambassador in Oct., we will continue to protect Afghans and their families who risked their lives to protect the US from terrorism.”

During the meeting with Congressman Brad Schneider, the Ambassador had the opportunity to listen to his views and insights on durable peace in the Middle East, the press release said.

The Pakistani envoy also briefed Congressman Schneider on the phased repatriation of illegal foreigners from Pakistan.

“Ways to address climate change and the issue of unregulated migration also came under discussion,” it was pointed out.

Meanwhile, a senior US State Department official will leave for Islamabad next week to discuss with Pakistani officials migration issues

The Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, Julieta Valls Noyes, will stay in Islamabad from Dec. 4 to 7, the department said in a statement.

“In Islamabad, Assistant Secretary Noyes will meet with senior government officials, as well as non-governmental and international organization partners, to discuss shared efforts to protect vulnerable individuals and accelerate safe, efficient relocation and resettlement of Afghan refugees in the U.S. immigration pipeline,” the statement added.

MULTAN, Dec 02 (APP):Multan Sultans have appointed Drikus Saaiman as the fielding and strength and conditioning coach for the upcoming edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Saaiman, who was born in Bloemfontein, brings in heaps of experience to the franchise. He is currently working with the Pakistan men’s team and has been part of the Pakistan women’s and South Africa men’s coaching staffs.
He was strength and conditioning and fielding coach with Nelson Mandela Bay Giants, an Mzansi Super League franchise, in 2018 and has had stints with South Africa’s A and emerging sides.
Drikus Saaiman stated that “I am very excited to be joining Multan Sultans and looking forward to my time at what will be my first stint at an HBL PSL franchise.
“Multan Sultans boast some of the best T20 cricketers and a fantastic coaching staff. I am eager to join this dressing room, and play my role in helping this wonderful team through my experience. I am sure that being here will also help me further grow as a coach.”

PM Kakar, Syrian Prime Minister ask Israel to stop brutal use of force on Palestinians

DUBAI, Dec 2 (APP):Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar and Prime Minister of Syria Hussein Arnous on Saturday asked Israel to stop the brutal use of force on the Palestinians; ensure ceasefire; facilitate humanitarian assistance; and resolve the Palestinian question in line with UN Security Council resolutions.

During a meeting held here between the two leaders on the sidelines of COP 28, the two sides discussed the ongoing Israeli violence against Palestinian people and called on the international community to take meaningful notice of the situation.

The two leaders also expressed the commitment to strengthen bilateral cooperation in diverse fields including economic, cultural and tourism besides agreeing to revive the Joint Ministerial Commission.

They also reviewed the bilateral relationship and agreed to enhance the frequency of bilateral political exchanges to foster understanding between the leadership and the brotherly peoples of the two countries.

The Governor in his address at the 14th Annual Convocation of Kohat University of Science and Technology, congratulated 360 graduating students who completed their bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees in various disciplines.

IRSA releases 88,800 cusecs water

ISLAMABAD, Dec 02 (APP): Indus River System Authority (IRSA) on Saturday released 88,800 cusecs water from its various rim stations with inflow of 44,700 cusecs.
According to the data released by IRSA, the water level in River Indus at Tarbela Dam was 1495.94 feet and was 95.94 feet higher than its dead level of 1,398 feet. The water inflow and outflow in the dam was recorded as 22,800 cusecs and 45,000 cusecs, respectively.
The water level in River Jhelum at Mangla Dam was 1174.50 feet, which was 125.50 feet higher than its dead level of 1,050 feet. The inflow and outflow of water was recorded 6,100 cusecs and 28,000 cusecs respectively.
The release of water at Kalabagh, Taunsa , Guddu and Sukkur was recorded as 52,700, 43,700, 41,700 and 10,800 cusecs respectively. Similarly, from River Kabul, a total of 7,300 cusecs of water released at Nowshera and 2,700 cusecs released from River Chenab at Marala.

Uzbekistan- Pakistan connected by historical, cultural relationships: Ambassador Usmanov

ISLAMABAD, Dec 2 (APP): Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Pakistan, Oybek Arif Usmanov said on Sunday that Uzbekistan and Pakistan are connected by historical, cultural and religious relationships, which heritage needs to be transferred to the new generation and enlightened about it.
“Our connectivity logically emanates from the closeness of cultures and religious traditions – caravan’s roads of Central Asia with South Asia – Pakistan, China, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh”, he said.
Ambassador Oybek Arif Usmanov said this while addressing the opening ceremony of the photo exhibition titled “Joint Cultural Heritage”, organized by the Ministry for Culture and National Heritage.
Uzbek envoy said that the rich scientific and cultural legacy of such great Ulemas like Imam Al-Bukhari, Imam Al-Termizi, Al-Motrudi and Marghinani scholars as Abu Ali Ibn Sina, Al-Ferghany, Abu Raiyan Al-Beruni and Zahiruddin Muhammad Babur, Dr Allama Muhammad Iqbal, Mirza Ghalib is considered as a richest and common heritage of our religion.
He said the brilliant works of Rahman Baba, Khushhal Khan Khattak, Allama Iqbal, Jalaluddin Rumi, Makhtumquli Fraghi, Sadriddin Aini, Mirza Galib, Alisher Navoi are well known in the world’s history, science and culture.
Oybek Arif Usmanov said the period of our interactions was brightly manifested during the era of the Ghandhara and Harappa civilizations, with the civilizations Saikhun and Jaihun rivers, Moghulistan and Khorasan cities -Samarqand, Bukhara, Khwarazm, Termez which are the well-known centers of Islamic cultural, enlightenment and sciences.
“I’m sure that all Pakistanis are well aware of the common great heritage of such dynasties like Amir Taymur and Zahiruddin Muhammad Babar. The great successors of Bukharis, Mughals, Barlas, Termizi, and Mirsas in Pakistan are bright followers of our connectivity, promoting the mutual understanding among our nations, he said .”
In the last years, our brotherly cooperation has been elevated to a level of strategical partnership due to confident political dialogue, strengthening the trade and industrial, and cultural cooperation.
For the last 3 years, we together have increased bilateral trade via brotherly Afghanistan based on Transit and Preferential trade agreements.
Ambassador of Uzbekistan and Pakistan, Oybek Arif Usmanov said, “Today we have been able to show to the Pakistani public and Diplomatic corpse the retrospective and historical photos demonstrating the very active dynamic interaction of Uzbek and Pakistani leaders – Presidents, Prime Ministers and federal ministers.
He  said that after 3 decades of our active interaction let`s focus on 1) the Connectivity strategy of our two regions South Asia and Central Asia 2) the implementation of the projects for boosting trade and economics,  transport linkages – cultural and people-to-people-connectivity.
He said that this strategic approach is also actively promoted by our country`s governments and experts’ community and most importantly supported by our young generation.
Oybek Arif Usmanov said that every year the bilateral trade is growing at 40-50% ($317 mln in 10 months 2023) and no doubt that our teams along with our colleagues will reach the goals of the recently signed 1 bln trade record, (Inshallah).
Let me express confidence that with the valuable and tireless efforts of both sides, we will be able to gain remarkable results – strengthening people-to-people contacts and business-to-business forums while developing region-to-region connectivity.
He said the relevant protocol on it was signed in Ashkhabad city, the capital of Turkmenistan on May 10, 1992.
A copy of that document is also displayed today in our exhibition.
The Ambassador admired two highly skilled artists – photographers Mr. Ramzan Mughal and Mr Fazan Rabi who during the last several years made beautiful photos of our common national and cultural heritage.
