Iran condemns the terrorist attack on Pakistani security forces

ISLAMABAD, Dec 12 (APP): The Embassy of Iran in Pakistan on Tuesday strongly condemned the terrorist attack on Pakistani security forces in Dera Ismail Khan.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the people and government of Pakistan in this hard time,” said the embassy on its official social media account.

Pakistan, Russia agree to continue constructive engagement, cooperation

Pakistan and Russia on Tuesday agreed to continue bilateral constructive engagement on regional issues including Afghanistan as well as cooperation at multilateral fora including the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

The bilateral ties were discussed during the talks between Additional Foreign Secretary (Europe), Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister A. Rudenko.

Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan is on a visit to Moscow at the invitation of Russian Deputy Foreign Minister A. Rudenko to hold consultations on bilateral and regional matters.

During the talks, the two sides positively assessed the level of bilateral cooperation, particularly in the area of trade, energy and counter-terrorism cooperation.

Pakistan books a place in U19 Asia Cup semis

ISLAMABAD, Dec 12 (APP):Pakistan U19 head to the semi-finals of ACC U19 Asia Cup 2023 riding on a three-match winning streak. After beating Nepal U19 and India U19 earlier in the tournament, Pakistan U19 defeated Afghanistan U19 by 83 runs at the ICC Cricket Academy Ground in Dubai.
Saad Baig-led side posted 303 in the first innings, on the back of half-centuries by Shamyl Hussain, Shahzaib Khan and Riazullah Khan. In turn, Afghanistan U19 were bowled out for 220.
After being invited to bat first, Pakistan opening batters Shamyl and Shahzaib stitched a masterful partnership that yielded 115 runs. Shamyl took charge from the get-go, hitting 75 from 54 and showcasing seven boundaries and five maximums, to put pressure on the opposition.
Afghanistan U19 captain Naseer Khan Maroofkhil trapped Shamyl LBW to break the partnership. He struck again soon after to take Mohammad Tayyab Arif out the same way. At the halfway mark, Pakistan U19 were 154-2 with Shahzaib and Riazullah on the crease. The two batted together to add 76 runs more to the total.
Shahzaib was the next batter to walk back to the pavilion, when he was caught off Faridoon Dawoodzai’s bowling after scoring 79 from 95, including nine fours and a six. In his subsequent over, Dawoodzai also removed Arafat Minhas. Shortly after, right-arm pacer Khalel Ahmed struck on two consecutive deliveries to dismiss Saad and Mohammad Zeeshan.
Azan Awais, who had an unbeaten century in the previous game, joined Riazullah on the crease. He scored 20 from 19, including three boundaries, before he fell to Dawoodzai for the latter’s third wicket of the day.
Riazullah was the third Pakistan batter to get a half-century (73, 69b, 5x4s, 2x6s) in the innings, ensuring that the team were in a position to put up a solid total before he got out to left-arm seamer Bashir Ahmad in the 46th over. He took two more wickets in his next over to bowl out Pakistan for 303 in 48 overs.
Right-arm fast Khubaib Khalil, playing his first game of the tournament, landed an early blow on Afghanistan U19 as he took out Khalid Taniwal in just the fourth over.
His fellow quick, Ubaid Shah, struck on the third ball of his spell to remove Jamshid Zadran. On the last delivery of the following over, Wafiullah Tarakhil (32, 34b,6x4s) fell victim to Khubaib, after hitting four boundaries on the trot. Afghanistan U19 were reduced to 52-3 at the end of the first power-play.
Ubaid inflicted further damage on the Afghanistan batting when he rattled the stumps to send Sohil Khan back to the pavilion.
Numan Shah was the top-scorer for Afghanistan U19, hitting a fighting half-century (54, 78b, 4x4s, 1×6) to keep his team alive in the game. He eventually fell to Ubaid, who completed a three-wicket haul.
Maroofkhil also chipped in with 26 from 61 including a boundary, before he was caught off Tayyab’s bowling. Two subsequent batters, Allah Ghazanfar and Khaleel Ahmed, also fell to Tayyab shortly after.
Shamyl picked up the last wicket as Dawoodzai (32, 41b, 2x4s, 1×6) was caught by Shahzaib to end the Afghanistan U19 batting, awarding Pakistan U19 a victory by 83 runs.

Pakistan delivers strong demarche to Afghan govt; seeks action against perpetrators of DI Khan attack

ISLAMABAD, Dec 12 (APP): Following the deadly attack that took place in Dera Ismail Khan on Tuesday and claimed by a terrorist group affiliated with the TTP, Pakistan delivered a strong demarche to the Afghan Interim Government calling for the investigation and strict action against the perpetrators.

In this connection, the foreign secretary called in the Chargé d’Affaires (Cd’A) of the Afghan Interim Government (AIG) to deliver Pakistan’s strong demarche in the context of Tuesday’s deadly terrorist attack on Pakistan’s security forces’ post in Daraban, Dera Ismail Khan.

The attack, whose responsibility has been claimed by Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan, a terrorist group affiliated with the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), resulted in multiple causalities, including the martyrdom of 23 security personnel, a Foreign Office statement said.

The Afghan diplomat was asked to immediately convey to the Afghan Interim Government to fully investigate and take stern action against the perpetrators of the recent attack.

The Afghan government was also asked to publicly condemn the terrorist incident at the highest level and take immediate verifiable actions against all terrorist groups including their leadership and their sanctuaries.

Pakistan also called for apprehending and handing over the perpetrators of the attack and the TTP leadership in Afghanistan to the Government of Pakistan, and taking all necessary measures to deny the persistent use of Afghan soil for terrorism against Pakistan.

“Today’s terrorist attack is yet another reminder of the terrorist threat to peace and stability in the region. We must act resolutely with all our collective might to defeat this menace. On its part, Pakistan remains steadfast in its commitment to combat terrorism,” the Foreign Office statement added.

PESCO Dera Circle recovers over 760m dues

Dera Ismail Khan, Dec 12 (APP):The Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) Dera Circle recovered Rs 760.1 million pending dues from the consumers in Dera Ismail Khan and Tank during the last three months.
According to a PESCO official, the ongoing campaign against the ‘Kunda mafia’ and recovery from defaulters was in full swing in Pesco Rural Division, Pesco City division and Pesco Tank division.
While talking to media, Additional Chief Engineer Dera Circle, Sardar Aslam Khan Gandapur said the drive against power theft and defaulters was started on September 7, 2023 following the directions of the federal government.
He said that PESCO staff have done effective operations in this regard collecting tens of millions of rupees from defaulters.
According to him, So far, Pesco Dera Circle recovered Rs 760.1 million pending dues from the consumers in the last three months, while 1523 cases against electricity thieves have been sent to the respective police stations, in which 1075 FIRs have been registered and 921 electricity thieves have been arrested.
Sardar Aslam Khan Gandapur said that the crackdown against the Kunda mafia would continue indiscriminately to prevent losses and in this regard, no compromise would be made, he added.
He said effective measures were being taken to improve the power supply system and eradication of power theft was among the top priorities.
He urged people to ensure timely payment of their monthly bills to get a smooth power supply and strengthen the financial position of the power company.
He appealed to the citizens to pay their arrears on time so that their areas could also be made load-shedding-free.

City has favourable conditions for investors: Governor

KARACHI, Dec 12 (APP):The Sindh Governor Mohammed  Kamran Khan Tessori on Tuesday said that the metropolis has favourable conditions for investors.
He stated this in a reception given in honor of Vice Chairman of IFA Group of Kuwait, Saleh Al Salmi. The Governor said that the Islamic countries had always assisted Pakistan.
 He further said that there were favorable investment conditions in the economic hub of the country. Tessori said that the economy will get stability with the investment of the Islamic countries. He said that all possible facilities will be provided to Kuwaiti investors.

Governor condemns DI Khan attack

PESHAWAR, Dec 12 (APP):Governor Khyber, Haji Ghulam Ali on Tuesday condemned the terrorist attack on a police station in district DI Khan and expressed grief over martyrdom of the security personnel in the attack.
In his message, KP Governor expressed sympathies with families of the martyred and prayed to rest departed souls in eternal abode with peace.
He also prayed for early recovery of the injured and said that these acts of cowardice could not demoralize the security forces and police, adding that the entire nation supports the security forces in the war against terrorism.

Pakistan envoy emphasizes stronger linkages with Europe through Science Diplomacy

BRUSSELS, Dec 12 (APP): Ambassador of Pakistan to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the European Union Amna Baloch on Tuesday emphasized the stronger linkages between Pakistan and Europe by enhancing collaboration in science and research through the Science Diplomacy initiative.

The embassy, in this connection, hosted a networking session on Science Diplomacy which was attended by key innovation stakeholders in Brussels including science attachés, researchers, university representatives and knowledge brokers.

The event showcased Pakistan’s vibrant Science Diplomacy landscape including opportunities for collaborative research.

In her remarks, Ambassador Amna Baloch said the Science Diplomacy was a new initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2018 and the networking session was in pursuance that that initiative.

She said that for last two years, the number of Pakistani students was the highest among the beneficiaries of the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship. Moreover, the country had also established collaboration with Horizon Europe, a scientific research initiative of the European Union.

The ambassador said that the objective of the Science Diplomacy was to effectively highlight in Europe what was happening in Pakistan in the field of science and link European research with Pakistan for the benefit of the two regions and nations.

Education minister urges provinces to work with fed govt in resolving education sector problems

ISLAMABAD, Dec 12 (APP):Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Mr Madad Ali Sindhi Tuesday said that all the provinces need to work together with the federal government to resolve all education-related problems.
He was charing the 37th Inter-Provincial Education Ministers’ Conference (IPEMC) held here yesterday. The Meeting has been specially called on by the Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training, Mr Madad Ali Sindhi to deliberate on the “Formulation of Uniform National Strategy to Cater the issue of Out of School Children (OOSC)”
Speaking on the occasion, Madad Ali Sindhi said that Out of out-of-school children is the biggest challenge we face in addition to quality of education. Madad said that these issues have been given top priority.
He said that the quality of education needs to be improved at all levels including schools, colleges and universities. Madad said that we have enough resources to make a difference, we just need to work hard with honesty.
Madad Ali Sindhi said that the Education Ministry was ensuring that an inclusive approach is taken to devise strategies that benefit students, teachers and parents in every province.
Madad Ali Sindhi in his remarks said that the meeting was going to play an instrumental role in developing a cohesive plan for providing access to education in all corners of Pakistan.
He reiterated that IPEMC’s contributions were going to be significant in the enrollment of Out of out-of-school children (OOSC) including the distance learning interventions.
He also assured the provinces that maximum facilitation would be given to them for reaping benefits from these projects.
Madad said that the Federal Government has a steadfast commitment to address school-related challenges, which is why we have organised this conference to foster an inclusive environment for all provinces to fully participate. Each province will be given the platform to present its plans and formulate practical strategies to address challenges related to out-of-school children.
Madad said that he hopes that the conference successfully fulfils its objective of formulating a uniform national strategy to tackle challenges faced by children outside the school system. The minister was told that Rs. 25 Billion has been allocated to address the out-of-school problem.
He was apprised of the out-of-school children crisis, in addition to pivotal updates on education initiatives. IPEMC discussed the establishment of a Challenge Fund of 25 billion for Out of School Children.
The conference delved into a detailed progress update on the Performance-Based Grants allocated to provinces, a crucial initiative through ASPIRE. IPEMC also discussed the establishment of a ‘Foundational Learning Hub’ in the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training which will launch a Foundational Literacy Policy in 2024.
The Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education presented ongoing reforms in the assessment system, underscoring the commitment to elevate the educational landscape.
Similarly, a comprehensive presentation on E-Taleem, an electronic education initiative strategically designed to transform the education sector, was given to update all the stakeholders on the ongoing progress.
He was further briefed that the Federal Government has notified the Syllabus for 9th – 12th grade as well. Secretary Education, Waseem Ajmal Chaudhary welcomed the participants and provided an introduction to IPEMC and an overview of the core agenda of the meeting.
He said that the Federal Government intends to extend the special focus on the OOSC agenda by allowing all provinces to participate and brief regarding their statistics, strategies and challenges while working on catering for the problem of out-of-school children.
Similarly, he urged the provinces to cooperate with the federal in terms of sharing data, incorporating Reading Hour in schools and increasing the usage of the school App launched by the Ministry of Federal Education and PTCL.
The Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training highlighted the achievements under the ASPIRE program, through which the federal government provides substantial performance-based financial grants to provinces to work against specific indicators.
For this year, under the program, it was highlighted that the following commitments will be achieved by the provincial education departments and federal ministry: development and notification of foundational literacy policies to ensure emphasis on foundational learning in early grades, data standardisation to enable standardised data collection and analysis across Pakistan, the implementation of the international assessment, Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (LaNA) and the establishment of the National Education Open-Source Data Portal at the Federal level.
Education Minister Punjab Mr Mansoor Qadir, Education Minister Balochistan Dr Qadir Bux Baloch, and Education Minister GB Mr Ghulam Shahzad attended the meeting in person. Education Secretaries of all provinces and Federal Education Secretary Mr. Waseem Ajmal Chaudhary in addition to representatives from FBISE, HEC department Lahore, PMDIU Lahore, Foundation Hub, ASPIRE,  PPDU, HEC, PIE and PTCL also attended the meeting.
