Governor Balochistan contacts IG Police Islamabad, inquire about arrest Baloch protesters

QUETTA, Dec 21 (APP):Governor Balochistan, Malik Abdul Wali Khan contacted the IG Police Islamabad via telephone and inquired about the arrested Baloch protesters during protests in the federal capital.
Wali Khan hoped that soon a peaceful solution to the problem would be found.IG Police Islamabad informed Governor Balochistan about the latest situation and said that all arrested women and children have been released and other detained Baloch protesters are in police custody and will be present before the court by tomorrow.
It may be mentioned here, that Balochistan Governor Malik Abdul Wali Khan has a plan to visit the federal capital by tomorrow in this regard, where he will meet with the members of the committee set up under the supervision of Federal Minister Fawad Hassan regarding the Baloch protesters and will soon release the arrested participants of march.

Water level in Mangla Dam at continual decline: 84.45 feet deep water discharged this season so far

MIRPUR  ( AJK): Dec 21 (APP) ::Besides the ongoing seasonal scheduled power generation, the discharge of water from Mangla dam is in progress reducing the water level in the reservoir to 1157.55 feet against the maximum conservation level of 1242 feet with live storage of 2.092 MAF on Thursday.
As a result of the continual inflow of water during the ongoing season, the water level in Mangla Dam was recorded as 1157.55 feet after the discharge of 84.45 feet of water from the reservoir by Thursday.
Mangla Dam stands largest reservoir in terms of water storage in the country, was filled to its maximum conservation capacity of 1242 feet, on August 17, this year as seasonal impounding of the reservoir. official sources told APP on Thursday.
At present 2.093 million acre-feet (MAF) water is available in the Mangla dam reservoir, the media wing of WAPDA told the news agency.
The inflows of Jhelum River at Mangla reservoir were recorded as 4700 cusecs with outflows of 26000 cusecs of water from the dam on Thursday.
At the same time, the position of the river inflows and outflows at Tarbela, Mangla and Chashma along with the reservoirs levels and the barrages remained on Thursday as under:-
Rivers: Indus at Tarbela: Inflows 17300 cusecs and Outflows 28000 cusecs, Kabul at Nowshera: Inflows 7100 cusecs and Outflows 7100 cusecs, Khairabad Bridge: Inflows 12200 cusecs and Outflow 12200, Jhelum at Mangla: Inflows 4700 cusecs and Outflows 26000 cusecs, Chenab at Marala: Inflows 7200 cusecs and Outflows 2000 cusecs.
Barrages: Jinnah: Inflows 46500 cusecs and Outflows 41000 cusecs, Chashma: Inflows: 43400 cusecs and Outflows 40000 cusecs, Taunsa: Inflows 44900 cusecs and Outflows 32900 cusecs, Guddu: Inflows 30800 cusecs and Outflows 26000 cusecs Sukkur: Inflows 22100 cusecs and Outflows 500 cusecs Kotri: Inflows 4100 cusecs and Outflows 0 cusecs Trimmu: Inflows 9200 cusecs and Outflow 2800 cusecs Panjnad: Inflows 5000 cusecs and Outflows 0 cusecs.
Reservoirs (Level and Storage):
Tarbela: Minimum operating level 1402 feet, present level 1474.99 feet, maximum conservation level 1550 feet, live storage today 2.043 MAF.
Mangla: Minimum operating level 1050 feet, present level 1157.55 feet, maximum conservation level 1242 feet, live storage today 2.092 MAF.
Chashma: Minimum operating level 638.15 feet, present level 642.10 feet, maximum conservation level 649 feet, live storage today 0.060 MAF.
The inflows and outflows of River Indus at Tarbela, Jinnah and Chashma, River Kabul at Nowshera and River Jhelum at Mangla have been reflected as mean flows of 24 hours, whereas the other flows have been gauged at 6.00 a.m on Thursday.

Religious Ministry to provide Abaya to women pilgrims this year

ISLAMABAD, Dec 21 (APP):Minister of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, Aneeq Ahmed has said that this year women pilgrims will be given Abaya by the Ministry that will have Pakistan’s flag embossed on it.
He expressed these views while addressing the closing ceremony of the Hajj Master Trainers training program for women organized by the Dawah Center for Women of the International Islamic University (IIUI). Federal Minister Aneeq Ahmed said on the occasion, that Hajj is a journey from oneself to God.
He said women protect religious values and transfer religion to future generations. He further said that the role of women as mothers and sisters in Islamic society is vital.
He said trainers of International Islamic University’s Dawah Center for Women will be utilized in training programs for Hajj to be organized by the Ministry. He discussed the memories of Hajj and highlighted the importance of Muslim men and women in society.
Federal Minister for Religious Affairs said that it is our responsibility to pass on religion to our generations. Addressing the participants, Aneeq Ahmed said that there is a need to strengthen the relationship with Allah and Prophet (PBUH).
He said there is a need to form a society in the light of religious principles. He said that the Ministry and the University will jointly work for Hajj training.
On this occasion, the Rector of IIUI, Prof. Dr. Samina Malik said that the services of the Ministry and Dawah Center for Women for the Hajj training program are commendable.
She said that the representation of women from every corner of the country made this program a success. We are very happy today about the completion of this course as all participants are now ambassadors of IIUI.
Addressing the ceremony Dr Abdul Rehman Federal Secretary Ministry of Religious Affairs said that it has been decided to extend the training period for pilgrims this time.
He said that an app has been launched by the Ministry of Religious Affairs which will guide the pilgrims.  He said that the special training videos of the trainers of this program for the pilgrims will be included in this app.
Earlier, Dr. Faryal Anbarin, in-charge of Dawah Center for Women, presented a report on the history, role, and activities of Dawah Center for Women and informed in detail about the contents and sessions of this course.
She told that the certificate of this center of university is approved by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. At the end of the program, gifts were presented to the guests of the ceremony and resource persons of this program.

FDA decides to promotes four employees

FAISALABAD, Dec 21 (APP):Departmental Promotion Committee of Faisalabad Development Authority (FDA) has decided to promote four FDA employees in next grades.
After chairing the meeting of departmental promotion committee, Director General FDA Muhammad Asif Chaudhry said that the committee reviewed promotion cases of 4 FDA employees and decided to promote the employees including Shabbir Sajid Gujjar, Mehmood Alam, Muhammad Javaid and Muhammad Younus.
He said that Shabbir Sajid Gajjar was promoted as Assistant Director IT and Mehmood Alam as Assistant Director Finance while Muhammad Javaid and Muhammad Younus were promoted as Office Assistant in grade-16.
Additional Director General FDA Junaid Hasan Manj, Chief Engineer Mehar Ayub, Director Town Planning Asma Muhsin and others were also present in the meeting.

AIOU committed to provide door-step educational facilities to students: VC AIOU

ISLAMABAD, Dec 21 (APP):Allama Iqbal Open University(AIOU) is committed to providing educational facilities to the students at their doorstep, said Prof Dr Nasir Mehmood, Vice-Chancellor, of AIOU at the inaugural session of a two-day Regional Heads Conference here yesterday.
Regional Heads of all 53 Regions of the University across the country and all Principal Officers of the University were present in the inaugural session.
The conference is being organized to review strategies for better services, improve the outreach system, facilitate students, and bring further improvement to the examination and admissions system.
Dr Nasir Mahmood has emphasized that students are the top priority, and the administration will do everything possible to increase facilities for them.
He has directed the regional heads to prepare proposals during the two-day conference about regional services, quality improvements in education, and facilitation of students at their doorsteps.
While enrollment in urban areas is satisfactory, dedicated efforts are needed to increase the number of students in remote rural areas where educational facilities are lacking.
The regional heads have been instructed to spread admission information for the spring semester of 2024 to the borders of every region to accommodate people who are deprived of educational facilities across the country.
Dr Nasir Mahmood has also directed to ensure transparency in the examination system. Director General Regional Services, Dr Malik Tauqir Ahmad Khan, explained the aims and objectives of the conference.
He stated that this conference of regional heads is being held physically after two years, all thanks to the VC, Prof Dr Nasir Mahmood, who believes in teamwork and consultation with the university’s stakeholders.
Dr Tauqir emphasized the importance of regional heads as they act as a bridge between AIOU and students and are visible in the field as our foot soldiers.
He added that the boundaries of AIOU are the same as those of Pakistan, so we need to strengthen our regional offices.  At the end of the conference, recommendations for improving student services will be presented to the VC.

PMIC chairman directs early completion of delayed Nai Gaj Dam project

ISLAMABAD, Dec 21 (APP): Chairman of Prime Minister’s Inspection Commission (PMIC) Brigadier (Retd) Muzaffar Ali Ranjha on Thursday chaired a meeting
to review the progress on Nai Gaj Dam project being constructed in Dadu, wherein he directed the authorities concerned to ensure its early completion.

The meeting was held after the PMIC chairman took cognizance of the concerns of the prime minister over the unwarranted delays in the completion of PSDP projects.

After showing dissatisfaction over the implementation status, the monitoring task was assigned to PMIC Member Engineer Aamir Hasan to ensure the effective supervision of the project.

The meeting was attended by PMIC officers including Engineer Aamir Hasan, Director Muhammad Saleh Narejo and the officers of the Ministry of Water Resources and WAPDA. Special Secretary, Irrigation Department, Commissioner Hyderabad, Deputy Commissioner Dadu and the officers of the Sindh government joined via video link.

The meeting was briefed about the implementation status and the latest progress on decisions made during the field visit and meeting chaired by PMIC chairman on November 2 at Nai Gaj Dam Project, Dadu. The PMIC chairman was apprised of the meeting held at the Sindh chief secretary’s office on November 3 in which the WAPDA had raised the issues regarding land acquisition, resettlement and road.

The PMIC head directed the authorities concerned to ensure the speedy completion of the project as the deadlines had been significantly delayed.

Once completed, the project would cultivate an area of 28,800 acres, protect the downstream areas from floods, ensure water supply to Manchar Lake and lower riparian, fisheries development, and recharge groundwater besides ensuring socio-economic uplift of the poor community. It will also produce four megawatts of electricity for the local populace.

The implementation report regarding the progress on the project will be submitted to the prime minister.

ANF recovers 394 tons chemical in eight operations; arrests 10

RAWALPINDI, Dec 21 (APP):Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) while conducting eight operations managed to recover 394 tons of chemicals and arrested 10 accused, said an ANF Headquarters spokesman here on Thursday.
He informed that ANF in a major operation against the illegal use of industrial chemicals conducted raids in different areas and recovered 394 tons chemicals.
The campaign was launched in the context of increasing threats of drug trafficking.
The ANF spokesman said that under the supervision of the national and military leadership, a comprehensive anti-smuggling campaign is underway to protect the economic and national interests of Pakistan.
Industrial use of controlled chemicals increases domestic production, tax revenue and national exchequer. However illegal use of chemicals used in industry is a constant threat.
ANF monitored the companies using controlled chemicals for 2 to 3 months. Misuse of import of chemicals under the guise of license of the companies was identified.
ANF conducted eight operations against the companies involved in the theft of chemicals. 394 tons of controlled chemicals (Acetone, MEK, Toluene) were seized in the operations.
Misuse of NOC quota by the companies is the cause of the wastage of national resources.  The most worrisome is the possible loss of the country’s prestige at the international level.
The ongoing anti-trafficking campaign represents an important step in protecting the country’s economic interests.
Efforts from all the stakeholders are needed to combat criminal elements, he added.

Indonesia, Pakistan to collaborate for improving distant learning programs

ISLAMABAD, Dec 21 (APP): A delegation from the University of Terbuka, Indonesia’s leading open university, visited Higher Education Commission (HEC) on Thursday to foster collaboration and discuss opportunities and key challenges in the realm of distant learning programs.

Dr. Zia Ul-Qayyum, Executive Director HEC chaired the meeting. Led by its Rector Prof. Ojat Darojat, the University’s delegation included faculty members representing various departments and experts in distant learning programs.

Dr. Muhammad Latif Gondal, Executive Director (Planning and Monitoring) Allama Iqbal Open University, Awais Ahmed, Adviser Quality Assurance HEC and other divisional heads attended the meeting.

The University of Terbuka is Indonesia’s prominent open university, providing accessible and flexible education through distance learning. Established in 1984, the University’s programs cover a wide array of disciplines, offering degrees at various levels.

The meeting aimed at enhancing HEC’s efforts advancing quality of higher education, fostering international cooperation, and addressing the evolving challenges faced by institutions in the field of distance learning.

Dr. Zia Ul-Qayyum appreciated the University of Terbuka’s credibility by achieving a remarkable rate of access to higher education through its distant learning programs.

He emphasized that by ensuring the quality of online education, particularly in terms of robust quality assurance measures, trust in the online mode of education can be developed and strengthened.

“The Government of Pakistan has been a staunch advocate of distance learning to improve access rates in the country. HEC is supporting Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) to increase the number of students, particularly in tertiary education, aligning with the government’s vision for enhanced accessibility to higher education,” he said.

Both sides deliberated on strategies to create an environment conducive to the success and integration of students within the distant learning system.

Various operational, auditing and implementation challenges in the distant learning programs also came under discussion. The meeting also discussed employability of Pakistani students in the University of Terbuka.

The delegation shared the mechanism of Management Review Committee (MRC) with HEC officials, which aims to ensure that the academic programs remain aligned with contemporary educational needs and global standards. Modalities of online management for specific fields such as agriculture and science studies were a key point of interest during the discussions.

Both institutions explored innovative approaches to enhance the online delivery of education in these specialized areas.

The meeting also discussed the agenda for the second round of visit where representatives from HEC’s Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) will finalise the modalities for collaboration.

IHC sets up Election Appellant Tribunal for capital

The two judges of high court including Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri and Justice Arbab Muhammad
Tarhir, would be part of the tribunal.
The appellant tribunal will hear the appeal against the decisions of returning officers.

Committee proposes amendments in Judicial Commission’s rules

ISLAMABAD, Dec 21 (APP): The Committee constituted to Review Judicial Commission of Pakistan rules 2010, has proposed amendments in various areas.
The meeting of the Committee was held on 16th December,2023, under the co-chairmanship of Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice (Retired) Manzoor Ahmed Malik with mandate to propose such rules of procedure for the Commission in making appointments of the Judges of the Constitutional Courts of the country, that comply with the collegial and inclusive decision-making process enshrined in Article 175-A of the Constitution, said a press release issued on Thursday.
The important areas of consideration for proposing amendments in the 2010 Rules includes, process for convening meetings of the Commission and making decisions therein, initiation of nomination(s) in the Supreme Court, initiation of nomination(s) in the High Courts, adequate representation of the District Judiciary and the Bar for elevation, diversity, criteria for selection for appointment of Judges to the Supreme Court and the High Courts, confirmation of Additional Judges in the High Courts and establishment of a Secretariat of the Commission, appointment of the Secretary and other staff thereto.
The co-chairs empowered “co-opt any person to the Committee” decided in the meeting on 16th December 2023, to co-opt following persons to the Committee to ensure adequate representation of females and the District Judiciary, as well as adding a public sector governance expert, to send in their proposals/recommendations to the Committee.
The meeting was also attended by Mrs. Justice Ayesha A. Malik, Judge SC, Ms. Justice Musarrat Hilali, Judge SC, Mrs. Justice Kausar Sultana Hussain, Judge High Court of Sindh, Ms. Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz, Judge IHC, Justice (Retired) Syeda Tahira Safdar, former Chief Justice High Court of Balochistan, Ms. Mahrukh Aziz, District and Sessions Judge (Retd.)
