Pakistan committed to upholding rights of all citizens: President

President Arif Alvi

ISLAMABAD, Dec 09 (APP): President Dr Arif Alvi has reiterated to protect the rights of all citizens irrespective of their caste, colour, and creed and said that Pakistan was committed to upholding of their rights as enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and other relevant international instruments.

In a message on the occasion of International Human Rights Day, being observed on December 10, he said that Pakistan along with the international community was commemorating the Day under the theme of “Freedom, Equality and Justice for All”.

“This day reminds us of our responsibility to protect and respect the rights of all people. This day also marks the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which serves as a common standard of human rights for all peoples and nations,” President Secretariat Press Wing in a press release quoted the president as saying.

The president said that the country’s constitution guaranteed fundamental rights, including political, social and economic rights, to the citizens and they were cognizant of their duty to protect the vulnerable and marginalized sections of our society.

“Pakistan has adopted several legal, economic and social remedies to promote and protect the rights of our people, including women, persons with disabilities, and children,” he added.

President Dr Alvi said that Pakistan had provided an enabling environment and equal opportunities to all minority groups who enjoyed equal social, political and economic rights.

He also called upon the government organizations, civil society, and the international community to play their role in protecting and promoting human rights.

As the international community observed International Human Rights Day, he said it was unfortunate that the people of Palestine were being deprived of their rights and had been subjected to the worst form of state terrorism and ethnic cleansing by Israel.

The Israeli Defence Forces had killed thousands of innocent people, including women, children, and healthcare and aid workers, besides bombing hospitals, schools, and residential areas, he added.

The president observed that the international community had failed to take action against Israel and stop it from committing a genocide of the Palestinian people.

Similarly, he said, the Human Rights abuses in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) also demanded the attention of the international community to hold India accountable for unleashing a reign of terror against the people of IIOJK.

Caretaker PM says govt. continuing its efforts to promote, safeguard human rights

PM Kakar

ISLAMABAD, Dec 09 (APP): Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has said that the Government of Pakistan would continue its efforts to promote and safeguard human rights, both domestically and internationally.

He reiterated Pakistan’s unflinching resolve to further advance respect for and protection of the rights and freedoms of all our citizens as enshrined in the Constitution as well as in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“Pakistan has consistently demonstrated its commitment to this cause, evident through various initiatives and policies aimed at protecting the dignity and rights of its citizens,” the caretaker prime minister said in a message on the occasion of International Human Rights Day being observed on December 10.

The prime minister said that this year’s theme “Freedom, Equality and Justice for All” was very apt and relevant. Pakistan joined the international community in commemorating the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights.

This historic declaration enshrined the inalienable rights to which all individuals were entitled – regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

The prime minister said that some key initiatives taken by the government of Pakistan included ratification of core human rights conventions, incorporation of fundamental rights in the constitution of Pakistan, enactment of human rights laws and establishment of institutions for prevention and protection of rights.

Special laws have been enacted for the protection of the rights of vulnerable population including women, children, minorities, persons with disabilities, senior citizens and transgenders, he added.

To ensure implementation of these laws, the prime minister said the government had established the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) with the power to take cognizance of the violation of human rights, the National Commission on Status of Women (NCSW) with the mandate to inquire into violations of women rights, and the National Commission on the Rights of Child (NCRC) with the mandate to take all necessary measures for protection of child rights including inquiry into cases of violation.

The Family Protection and Rehabilitation Centre in Islamabad provided temporary shelter and psycho-social counseling to victims of violence, he said, adding similarly, the establishment of Zainab Alert Response & Recovery Authority (ZARRA) and Transgender Protection Center, Islamabad were also important human rights related initiatives of the government.

The caretaker prime minister said despite visible progress in the field of human rights, several challenges remain in achieving the desired milestones.

In this regard, collaborative efforts, both at the national and international level, were vital to address the complexities involved in dealing with issues related to human rights, he further stressed.

Prime Minister Kakar said Pakistan also remained deeply concerned by the status of human rights in other parts of the world.

“In South Asia, India is violating all norms and conventions of human rights in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The illegal actions of 5 August 2019, aimed at demographic change and disenfranchising the Kashmiris from exercising their right to self-determination have further aggravated the scale of oppression and suppression of Kashmiri people’s basic rights, identity and fundamental freedoms,” PM Office Media Wing, in a press release, quoted the prime minister as saying.

He said Pakistan reiterated its call for ending egregious human rights abuses in IIOJK and reaffirmed to continue moral, diplomatic and political support to the Kashmiri people in their just struggle against India’s tyranny, occupation and oppression.

“We urge the international community to press India to grant Kashmiris their fundamental rights including the right to self-determination as enshrined in the UN Security Council resolutions,” he reiterated.

The caretaker prime minister said that another pressing human rights situation had emerged in Palestine where Israel was egregiously violating human rights in Gaza, resulting in thousands of causalities, including innocent women and children. Israel’s purposeful, indiscriminate, and disproportionate targeting of people violated all standards of human rights and constituted a clear breach of international law.

He urged the international community to redouble efforts for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and asked Israel to end its brutal occupation of Palestine and grant the Palestinian people their inalienable right to decide their own future.

The prime minister further emphasized upon working together to build a world where the inherent dignity and equal rights of all members of the human family were recognized and upheld.

Fast-track development of merged areas cornerstone of Govt policy: CM

0

PESHAWAR, Dec 09 (APP): Caretaker Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Justice (retd) Syed Arshad Hussain Shah here Saturday termed the fast-track development of newly merged tribal districts as the topmost priority of his government.

He said that despite financial issues, the caretaker provincial government is not only committed to bringing the newly merged areas at par with other developed parts of the province but also taking practical measures to this effect.

“The government will go all-out to complete ongoing developmental projects and other public welfare activities in the merged areas within the stipulated timelines”, he said and added that the war against terrorism had badly affected the tribal belt further exacerbating their decades-long deprivations; therefore, those people needed special attention for their development and redressal of their deprivations.

He said that a complaint cell would soon be established at Chief Minister’s House to monitor the public services delivery as well as receive public complaints about the provincial government’s departments and institutions; immediate action would be taken to redress the public grievances and negligent officials would be held accountable.

Any negligence and inefficiency in the official duty especially in public service delivery will not be tolerated at any cost.

These views, he expressed while addressing the 20th Annual Scholarships and Awards Distribution Ceremony organized by the WANA Welfare Association here at the Institute of Management Sciences, Peshawar on Saturday.

He paid rich tribute to the welfare activities of the association especially its efforts in promoting education in WANA and other parts of merged districts and said that undoubtedly, serving humanity was a noble deed, and how WANA Welfare Association has undertaken the welfare of the vulnerable segments of the society at its own expense, was truly admirable.

The Chief Minister said that the provincial government was also fully committed to the wellbeing of the people of merged districts, and was working practically for this purpose. He made it clear that the provincial government was going to launch the “Khushal Khyber Pakhtunkhwa” programme very soon, under which special attention would be given to the merged districts.

Similarly, under the provincial government’s Human Resource Export Strategy, the youth of the province especially those of merged areas would be imparted with IT-based courses as per the demands of the modern market to enable them to have better job opportunities abroad.

Our ultimate goal was to empower the youth economically as well as enable them to play their role as responsible citizens in the national development and prosperity, he remarked.

On this occasion, the Chief Minister expressed his commitment to take pragmatic steps to deal with the situation arising due to the lowering of the underground water table in WANA, saying that he would personally visit WANA to review the situation.

He directed the concerned government authorities to immediately start the survey to determine the water issues in WANA so that practical steps could be initiated without any delay.

On this occasion, the chief minister also appealed to the tribal people and social organizations to play their role in the anti-polio campaign in their respective areas.

He regretted that unfortunately, some elements were trying to use polio as a tool against the government. He made it clear that polio eradication was our collective responsibility; we do not want any of our children to be forced to live a disabled life due to anyone’s stubbornness or negligence.

Local religious scholars, maliks, social welfare organizations and all other intellectuals should take polio eradication as a mission, and play a proactive role in this purpose. The Chief Minister, on the occasion, announced Rs. 5 million for the WANA Welfare Association and hoped that the association would continue its public welfare activities in a better manner.

Earlier, the chief minister distributed prizes and testimonial certificates amongst students who completed their studies in various educational institutions with the financial support of the WANA Welfare Association. He congratulated the position-holder students and hoped that they would continue to hard work and contribute to the development of the country.

Chief Secretary Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry, Secretary Education Moatasim Billah Shah and President WANA Welfare Association Rahmatullah Wazir also addressed the ceremony.
