SECP issues Islamic finance bulletin for 2022-23

ISLAMABAD, Jan 29 (APP):The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has issued its first ‘Islamic Finance Bulletin’ for the financial year 2022-23, aimed at providing up-to-date data, insights into new developments, and a deeper understanding of regulatory reforms in the Islamic financial services industry.
The Islamic Finance Bulletin additionally, it provides essential information on the Islamic financial services industry including Islamic capital markets, non-banking financial institutions, Takaful, and it is also offering a future perspective
on SECP policies, regulated sectors, and cooperation, said a press release issued here on Monday.
The SECP has conducted a diagnostic review of Islamic finance in its regulated sectors and subsequently published its report in February 2023, capturing information, data, challenges, and opportunities along with policy recommendations.
Further, it has also been decided to publish quarterly data on Islamic finance, and data on Islamic banking.
This Islamic Finance Bulletin, therefore presents a quarterly overview of development in Islamic finance during the financial year ended on June 30, 2023.
Despite facing challenges in economic transformation, Pakistan’s Islamic finance sector has made significant progress and now making currently a significant portion of the country’s financial landscape.
As per the ruling of the Federal Shariat Court in 2022, to eliminate Riba and transform the economy in five years,  has accelerated these efforts, indicating continued growth in the sector.
Moreover, for a comprehensive understanding of Pakistan’s complete Islamic financial system, the SECP  encourages readers to refer to the ‘Islamic Banking Bulletin’ published by the State Bank of Pakistan.

Contraband seized at Faisalabad airport

FAISALABAD, Jan 29 (APP):A drug peddler was arrested with heroin from a passenger at the
Faisalabad International Airport here on Monday.
A spokesperson for the Anti-Narcotics Force said a team recovered 1.5-kg of ice from
a bag of a passenger, Muhammad Nadeem, who was going to abroad.
The accused was arrested and sent behind the bars.

Political parties called upon to observe election elections’ SOPs

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, JAN 29(APP)::The district administration has called upon all the political parties to observe the prescribed standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the upcoming general elections scheduled to be held on Feb 8.
They have been asked not to hold any gatherings, processions and rallies without prior permission in the manner as envisaged in already devised and endorsed SOPs to ensure a secure and conducive environment for transparent conduct of elections.
It warns all political parties, leaders, and workers that punitive action would be taken against them under relevant sections and other enabling laws in case of violation.
Meanwhile, the district administration of South Waziristan Lower has also imposed section 144 to ensure a secure and peaceful environment for the general elections.
In this regard, a notification has been issued by Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Nasir Khan, saying the order would remain in place till Feb 11.
It says that the order has been enforced for the protection of citizens’ lives and properties and to ensure a conducive environment for the general elections scheduled to be held on Feb 8 here like elsewhere in the country.

KP Govt to provide over Rs 5bln to govt hospitals for emergency, essential medicines: CM’s aide

PESHAWAR, Jan 29 (APP):Advisor to the Chief Minister for Health Riaz Anwar on Monday said that the provincial government has decided to release more than five billion rupees to the health department to address the shortage of medical equipment and emergency and essential medicines at the government hospitals.
He said that in the next few days, mandatory medicines would be purchased for hospitals at the local level, adding that due to shortage of funds, the specific amount for purchase of medicines and medical equipment by the government hospitals could not be released during the current financial year.
He said that the Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ghulam Ali also highlighted the issue and wrote a letter to the interim Chief Minister for release of funds.
Riaz said that the approval of the funds required for essential medicines in the hospitals has been taken from the cabinet.
He said the funds would be utilized for the purchase of medicines for the public sector hospitals besides payment of arrears to the employees.

WASA officers directed to accelerate recovery drive

FAISALABAD, Jan 29 (APP):Water & Sanitation Agency (WASA) Managing Director Amir Aziz directed officers to accelerate the recovery drive without any discrimination on Monday.
Chairing a meeting, he directed revenue officers to expedite efforts for 100 per cent
recovery.
He said performance of recovery officers would be monitored and reviewed strictly.
The consumers billing data was uploaded on WASA website www.wasafaisalabad.gop.pk
from where they could download their bills to ensure its timely payment, he added.
