UN peacekeeping chief saddened over Pakistani peacekeeper’s loss in Abyei
UNITED NATIONS, Jan 30 (APP): Head UN Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, has expressed grief over the killing of a Pakistani peacekeeper serving the U.N. Interim Security Force for Abyei, an area disputed by South Sudan and the Sudan, wile protecting civilians during the ongoing inter-communal violence.
In a message to Pakistan UN Ambassador, Munir Akram, he said: “I learned with great sadness the killing of a Pakistani peacekeeper in Abyei. I wanted to express to you, your government and the bereaved family, my deepest condolences.”
The fallen soldier was identified as Sepoy Muhammad Tariq, who embraced martyrdom, while four individuals, including two officers, were injured.
Lacroix thanked Pakistan for its contributions to UN peacekeeping around the world and wished “full and speedy recovery” to the injured.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Ambassador Akram said that he was deeply grieved to learn of the martyrdom of Sepoy Tariq.
He expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and to the Armed Forces of Pakistan.
“Such supreme sacrifices are a symbol of Pakistan’s commitment to peacekeeping endeavors of the United Nations, ” Ambassador Akram said, noting that Pakistan ‘peacekeeping contingents have always distinguished themselves by their professionalism and devotion to duty.
To date, 181 Pakistani peacekeepers have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the cause of global peace under U.N.’s umbrella.
Pakistan, he said, remains committed to its role as a responsible member of the international community and will continue to contribute towards global peace and stability under the auspices of the United Nations.

Railways added ten more passenger trains in last year
ISLAMABAD, Jan 30 (APP): Pakistan Railways has added as many ten more passenger trains across the country in a bid to accommodate the passengers, provide better felicities to the commuters besides generate more revenue for the department.
“Before completing the network of 96 trains over the entire railway network, the last year the figure of trains is 86 which will be improved after the concerted efforts of the department,” an official in the Ministry told APP.
He said the facilities being provided to the passengers at railway stations include waiting rooms, vending stalls, station restaurants, wheelchairs, information desk, computer reservation facilities, a public address system to inform the public about the arrival/departure of trains, provision of paramedics and 1st aid facility, online reservation facility, passenger insurance service and revival of help desks at stations facilities in trains.
To a question, Pakistan Railways has beefed up precautionary measures to reduce passenger train accidents and only six minor accidents with no causality took place on the entire railway network in the country during the last three months.
“Only two train accidents have taken place in September, no accident happened in October and four train accidents occurred in November due to effective steps of the department,” he added.
He said the drastic decrease in accidents has been witnessed due to the efforts being undertaken to reduce trespassing at unmanned level crossings and unauthorized locations.
“Our staff is continuously monitoring the railway tracks across the country and conducting thorough inspection of the trains as the safety of the passengers is the top priority of the department,” he said.
The official said the department was taking several steps to improve the Railway services including the issues related to tracking maintenance that was given top priority.
He said that the punctuality of trains was improved and all the trains were being monitored, reviewed, and rectified while to facilitate the passengers, a mobile application “Pak rail live” has also been launched for real-time tracking of trains.

Murree snowfall forecast; all departments on high alert
RAWALPINDI, Jan 30 (APP):Murree district administration after snowfall forecast by the Meteorological Department for the ‘The Queen of the Hills’, Murree on Tuesday put all the departments concerned on high alert.
According to a Murree district administration spokesman, the MET office had forecasted rain and snowfall for Murree on Tuesday night and Wednesday.
In addition to moderate to heavy rain and snowfall during this period, the weather would remain cold and partly cloudy in Murree, Galliyat and surrounding areas.
The minimum temperature is likely to be 00 to 02 degrees Celsius and maximum 07 to 09 degrees Celsius.
In view of the possibility of snowfall, the district administration put all the departments concerned on high alert and issued an advisory for the tourists. The tourists were advised to adopt all possible precautionary measures.
The tourists were urged to get weather updates before visiting Murree, he said adding, tire chains must be used in snowy areas.
The tourists were also asked to follow the traffic rules to ensure smooth flow of traffic on the roads.
He informed that 13 tourist facilitation centers had been established at various places to help and guide the tourists.
In case of any emergency, Punjab emergency service, Rescue- 1122 could be contacted while the tourists could also use Tourism Helpline-1421, and PDMA Helpline-1129.
