Fruit exports soar by 9.31%, hitting $171 mln in 1st half

ISLAMABAD, Jan 30 (APP):Pakistan’s fruit exports surged by 9.31 percent in the initial half of the ongoing fiscal year compared to the same period last year, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported.

According to PBS data, fruit exports reached to $171.280 million from July to December (2023-24), showcasing a notable increase from the exports of $156.692 million recorded during the corresponding period in the previous fiscal year (2022-23).

On year-on-year basis, the good exports however declined by 5.10 percent in December 2023 when compared to the exports of the commodity during December 2022. The fruit exports in December 2023 were recorded at $43.210 million against the exports of $45.532 million in December 2022.

On month-on-month basis, the fruit exports surged by 125.71 percent in December 2023 when compared to the exports of $19.144 million in November 2023.

The overall food group exports from Pakistan increased by 49.84 percent during the first six months of the current fiscal year as compared to the corresponding period of last year.

Food exports during July-December (2023-24) were recorded at $3,481,200 million as compared to the exports of $2,323,275 million in July-December (2022-23), a surge of 49.84 percent, according to the latest PBS data.

In terms of quantity, the gold imports declined by 80 percent when compared to the imports of 60 kilograms during November 2023.

It is pertinent to mention here that the country’s overall merchandize trade deficit contracted by 34.29 percent during the first half of the current fiscal year compared to the corresponding period of last year.

The Trade deficit from July-December (2023-24) was recorded at $11.148 billion as against the deficit of $16.965 billion in July–December (2022-23), showing negative growth of 34.29 per cent.

During the period under review, the exports increased by 5.17 percent to $14.981 billion compared to the exports of $14.244 billion during the corresponding period of last year, according to the latest PBS data.

On the other hand, the imports narrowed by 16.28 per cent and were recorded at $26.129 billion compared to $31.209 billion last year.

Extortionists arrested in operations by Rangers

KARACHI, Jan 30 (APP):In collaborative intelligence operations between the Pakistan Rangers Sindh and the police, two alleged extortionists were apprehended in the Garden and Lyari areas of the megalopolis. Identified as Adnan Shah and Anees, as per a statement from a Rangers spokesperson on Tuesday.
The individuals in question, Adnan Shah and Anees, were tracked down following a WhatsApp call they made to five traders at the Iron Market. In the call, they purported to be Ahmed Ali Magsi, a commander of the Lyari gang, demanding Rs 0.2 million in extortion.
Promptly responding to the incident, Pakistan Rangers Sindh assembled a specialized team, utilizing advanced technical methods to successfully apprehend the suspects.
During initial interrogations, the accused confessed to orchestrating an organized extortion network spanning Lyari, Garden, and adjacent areas over the past year. They disclosed transferring over Rs 1 million to Azeem, the nephew of Lyari gang commander Saleem alias Chocolaty, based in Iran, through hawala/hundi channels.
Further investigation revealed Azeem’s role in making extortion threats to businessmen from various Iranian numbers, compelling payment under the threat of severe consequences. Efforts are underway to apprehend other collaborators involved in these criminal activities.
The apprehended individuals have been transferred to the police custody for subsequent legal proceedings.

Preparations for holding free, fair elections to be completed soon: ECP

KARACHI, Jan 30 (APP):Preparations for holding free and fair general elections across the country including Sindh are under process and will soon be completed as printing of ballot papers was in progress.
According to a press release, the printing of ballot papers will be completed by February 02 and then their delivery will be initiated with the help of Security institutions, DROs and ROs of the respective provinces.
Election Commission has provided facilities to the voters to get information regarding their vote status through SMS service by sending CNIC number to 8300, the statement said.
This facility will enable people to get information about the polling station where they would have to cast their votes.
Meanwhile, ECP has so far provided training to 0.97 polling staff out of 976000 and the training process will be completed within three days.
The ECP has taken notice of the incident of firing among two political parties activists in Karachi and sought reports from Chief Secretary and IG Sindh so that action can be taken against responsible persons.

Rain of moderate to heavy intensity expected across country from Jan 31-Feb 04; flash floods likely in Balochistan

ISLAMABAD, Jan 30 (APP):Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast more rain of moderate to heavy intensity with snowfall over the hills across the country from January 31 to February 04 with chances of flash floods in Balochistan amid heavy rain.
A westerly wave persisting in the country till February 04 will bring rain across the country including Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Sindh, Kashmir, and Gilgit Baltistan during the period.
In Balochistan, rain with isolated heavyfalls with snowfall over the hills is expected in Nokkundi, Dalbandin, Chagi, Kalat, Khuzdar, Lasbella, Awaran, Turbat, Kech, Gwadar, Jiwani, Pasni, Ormara, Panjgur, Kharan, Noushki, Washuk, Mastung, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Zhob, Sherani, Barkhan, Musakhel, Kohlu, Jhal Magsi, Loralai, Ziarat, Quetta, Chaman, Pishin, Qila Abdullah and Qila Saifullah on February 02-03.
In Gilgit Baltistan and Kashmir, moderate to heavy rain-snowfall over the hills is expected in Gilgit-Baltistan including Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, Shigar, Kashmir including Neelum valley, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur from January 31 to February 04 with occasional gaps.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, moderate to heavy rain-snowfall over the hills is expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Kohistan, Shangla, Buner, Karak, Khyber, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Buner, Bajaur, Kurram, Waziristan, Kohat, Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan from January 31 to February 04 with occasional gaps.
In Punjab and Islamabad, rain with moderate or heavy with snowfall over the hills is expected in Murree and Galliyat from January 31 to February 01 and February 03 and 04 with occasional gaps.
Light to moderate rain is expected in Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Pothohar region, Mandi Bahauddin, Mianwali, Khushab, Sargodha, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Faisalabad, Jhang, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Kasur, Sahiwal and Okara from January 31 to February 01 and on February 03 and 04 while in Multan, Bhakkar, Layyah, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Dera Ghazi Khan and Rahimyar Khan on February 02 and 03.
In Sindh, light to moderate rain is expected in Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, Mirpurkhas, Karachi, Shaheed Benazirabad, Jacobabad, and Kashmore on February 02 and 03 while cold and partly cloudy weather is expected in other parts of the province.
About the possible impacts and advice, the PMD said that heavy rainfall may cause flash flooding in local nullahs of Barkhan, Kohlu, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Dalbandin, and Khuzdar on February 02 and 03.
Moderate to isolated heavy rain with snowfall over the hills may cause landslides and closure of roads in Murree, Galliyat, Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Neelum valley, Bagh, Poonch and Haveli on January 31 and February 01.
The tourists have been advised to remain cautious during the spell.  Rain may be beneficial for the standing crops, particularly in Barani areas of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Foggy conditions are likely to subside significantly during the period. All concerned authorities are advised to remain alert and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation during the forecast period.

China’s mobile phone shipments up 6.5% in 2023

ISLAMABAD, Jan 30 (APP):China’s mobile phone shipments rose 6.5 percent year-on-year to 289 million units in 2023, according to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.
5G phone shipments came in at 240 million units last year, increasing 11.9 percent on a yearly basis and accounting for 82.8 percent of China’s total mobile phone shipments in 2023, said the CAICT, a research institute under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China Daily reported.
Domestic brands continued to dominate China’s mobile phone market in 2023, with total shipments growing 1.1 percent from a year earlier to 231 million units.
A total of 406 domestic-brand new phone models were rolled out last year, up 5.5 percent year-on-year, CAICT data showed.
In December 2023 alone, the total mobile phone shipments reached roughly 28.28 million units, up 1.5 percent year-on-year, the data revealed.

Pakistan beat Jamaica by 15-2 in FIH Hockey5s WC

ISLAMABAD, Jan 30 (APP): Pakistan downed Jamaica by 15-2 in the FIH Hockey5s World Cup’s Challenger Trophy at Muscat, Oman.

According to the details, after being out of the race for the quarterfinals, Pakistan defeated Jamaica by a huge margin in the ongoing matches to determine the 9th to 16th positions.

For Pakistan, Abdul Hannan Shahid scored seven goals including a double hat-trick while Rana Waheed scored five goals including a hat-trick. Arshad Liaquat, Ghazanfar Ali, and Zakaria Hayat scored one goal each.

Pakistan Five Side Hockey Team Management includes Head Coach Olympian Shakeel Abbasi, Manager Olympian Dilawar Hussain, Physiotherapist Waqas Mahmood, and Video Operator Junaid Akhtar were also present with the team.

Pakistan team would play a match against the winner of the USA vs Australia match to determine the 9th to 12th position in the event.

Cold weather with isolated, scattered rains predicted for KP

PESHAWAR, Jan 30 (APP):The Regional Meteorological Center Peshawar on Tuesday predicted that cold and cloudy weather is likely to occur in most districts of the province.
However, it said rain with snowfall over the hills is expected in Chitral, Lower & Upper Dir, Malakand, Buner, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Torghar, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Swabi, Mardan, Nowshera, Peshawar, Charsadda, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Kurram, North & South Waziristan districts.
The center further predicted that scattered light rain is expected in Kohat, Karak, Hangu, Orakzai, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Tank, and DI Khan districts. It said that snowfall may affect traveling and transportation and tourists are advised to be cautious.
During the last 24 hours, rain occurred in most districts of the province. However, rain with snowfall occurred over Kohistan, Swat and Abbottabad.
Rain (recorded in mm):  Pattan, Malam Jabba & Balakot 04mm each, Kakul 03mm, Saidu Sharif 02mm, Khaar-Bajaur 01mm, Peshawar (A/P & City) and DI Khan Trace (each). Snowfall recorded (in inches):  Malam Jabba 02.
The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in centigrade at different stations of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were Peshawar 18/09, Chitral 11/02, Timergara 13/03, Dir 08/01, Mirkhani 12/01, Kalam 04/-07, Drosh 12/00, Saidu Sharif 11/02, Pattan 10/05, Malam Jabba 03/-02, Takht Bhai 18/05, Kakul 11/00, Balakot 11/03, Parachinar 07/-02, Bannu 21/05, Cherat 11/02, DI Khan City 23/10.
The lowest temperature recorded in the province was -07 in Kalam.
