Independence Day: Azm-e-Istehkam postage stamp issued to honour Arshad Nadeem, freedom struggle

ISLAMABAD, Aug 10 (APP):The government has issued a special postage stamp on the occasion of 77th Independence Day to honour the Paris Olympics’ gold medalist Arshad Nadeem and the freedom struggle of the Pakistani nation and its achievements.
The initiative had been taken on the special directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, said a news release issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Saturday said.
The special postage stamp has been titled “Azm-e-Istehkam” which is a testament to the country’s commitment to development and prosperity.
A picture of the Javelin Thrower Arshad Nadeem has been added to the stamp to pay tribute to him for winning a Gold Medal and setting a new Olympic record by throwing the javelin at a distance of 92.97 meters at the Paris Olympics 2024.
According to the news statement, the freedom struggle of Pakistan’s nation and its symbolic importance have been highlighted by adding an image of Minar-e-Pakistan to the stamp.
The stamp issued by the Government of Pakistan on the occasion of Independence Day, would continue to remind the future generations not only about the struggle and sacrifices made by our ancestors for the freedom, but also the commitment of the government for the development of Pakistan.

Preparations for I.Day celebrations at peak

SUKKUR, Aug 10 (APP): As the Independence Day is approaching closer, a large number of stalls displaying national flags, bunting, flag-coloured dresses and other accessories have been set up at markets and streets to attract buyers across the Sukkur division.
The patriotic youngsters, especially children, can be seen around these stalls, buying flags, bunting, badges and Jashan-i-Azadi dresses to finalize their preparations for celebrating the Independence Day in a befitting manner.
In Sukkur, vendors have set up stalls of colourful bunties, national flags, banners and pictures of national heroes who struggled day and night to achieve a common goal.
National songs nowadays are in the air which gives the message that the whole nation is united and tidy. The national flags would be hoisted at all important buildings to celebrate the day in a befitting manner.
Local FM and Radio Pakistan Khairpur has chalk out series of special programmes in connection with the Independence Day celebrations to highlight the progress made by the country in different fields since its inception.

Flour rate further decreased

FAISALABAD, Aug 10 (APP):The government has made further decrease in the rate of flour bags of 10 kilograms (kg) and 20 kg to facilitate consumers.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdullah Nayyar Sheikh said here on Saturday that on special direction of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz, flour rate was further decreased and now the 10-kg bag would be available at rate of Rs.805 instead of Rs.820 whereas 20-kg flour bag could be purchased at Rs.1610 instead of Rs.1640.
He said that district administration has also activated  price control magistrates and officers of food department to ensure availability of flour bags at subsidized rates across the district, he added.

Sesame growers advised to control whitefly attack

FAISALABAD, Aug 10 (APP):Agricultural experts have advised growers to control whitefly (Sufaid Makhi) attack on the crop of sesame (Til) on urgent basis.
Director Agriculture (Extension) Chaudhry Khalid Mehmood said here on Saturday that whitefly attack was witnessed at sesame crops which would surely damage quality and quantity of the grains. Therefore, the farmers should take immediate measures to control whitefly attack before its severity.
He advised the growers to use flunicamid 80 grams, bifenthrin 250 ml or dimethoate 125 ml per acre for spray against whitefly.
He also advised the farmers to spray pesticides in the morning or evening and use kisuga mycin and cuprous chloride 400 mlk per acre or fustil aluminum 250 grams per acre in case of disease attack on the sesame crops.
He said that sesame was a cash crop which could not only a pivotal role in mitigating financial constraints of the growers but it would also help in catering to domestic food requirements.
He said that sesame crop take 129 days for fully ripen. Therefore, the farmers should avoid from harvesting unripe crop as it would make the quality of sesame grains very poor and the importer or purchaser did not show any willing to buy such grains, he added.

Rivers Indus, Kabul run in medium, low flood: FFC

ISLAMABAD, Aug 10 (APP):The Federal Flood Commission (FFC) has said that at present River Indus is flowing in “Medium Flood” in Taunsa-Guddu reach and in “Low Flood” in Kalabagh-Chashma reach and at Sukkur Barrage while River Kabul is flowing in “Low Flood” at Nowshera.
According to the daily FFC report released on Saturday, all other major rivers in the Indus River System including Rivers Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej are discharging normal flows.
Medium level flows are expected in River Chenab along with Nullahs in catchments of Rivers Chenab and Ravi during the period from August 11 to 13. Besides, low to medium level flows are also expected in the Hill Torrents of D.G. Khan Division and nullahs of Zhob, Sibi, Nasirabad and Kalat Divisions during the said period.
The combined live storage in the country’s major reservoirs (Tarbela, Mangla, and Chashma) stands at 10.147 MAF (i.e. 75.98% of the maximum live storage capacity of 13.354 MAF).
Meanwhile, according to the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), yesterday’s trough of Westerly Wave over Northeastern Iran lies over Northern parts of Afghanistan and adjoining areas. Yesterday’s upper air cyclonic circulation over central Jharkhand (India) remained stationary.
The active monsoon trough extends from upper air circulation at Jharkhand (India) to Northeastern Punjab. Moderate to strong moist currents are penetrating the upper parts of the country from Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal up to 5,000 feet. Seasonal Low lies over northeast Balochistan.
FFD has predicted scattered to widespread thunderstorm rain of Moderate to Heavy Intensity with Isolated Very Heavy Falls over the upper catchments of all the major rivers along Islamabad for the next 24 hours.
Scattered thunderstorm rain of Moderate Intensity with Isolated Heavy Falls is expected over Punjab (Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore, Bahawalpur and D.G. Khan Divisions) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Peshawar, Kohat, Bannu and D.I. Khan Divisions) along with isolated thunderstorm rain of moderate intensity over Balochistan (Zhob, Sibbi, Nasirabad & Kalat Divisions) during the same period.

Saudi envoy congratulates Pakistan on Arshad Nadeem’s historic Olympic gold

ISLAMABAD, Aug 10 (APP): Saudi Press Attaché, Dr. Naif Al-Otaibi has extended his warmest congratulations to the people of Pakistan on Arshad Nadeem’s historic achievement of winning Gold Medal at the Paris Olympics.

In his congratulatory message on Saturday, he said Arshad Nadeem, the Pakistani javelin thrower, achieved a monumental feat by breaking the Olympic record with a throw of 92.97 meters, bringing immense pride to his nation.

Dr. Al-Otaibi praised Arshad Nadeem for his outstanding performance, describing it as a significant milestone not only for Pakistan but for the entire Muslim world. “This historic win is a testament to the resilience and dedication of the people of Pakistan,” he remarked.

Dr. Al-Otaibi also highlighted the close brotherly relations between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, adding that the success of Pakistani athletes was celebrated with great joy in the Kingdom. He expressed his hope that this victory would inspire further achievements and strengthen the bonds of friendship between the two nations.

The Saudi press Attaché wished continued success to Pakistan in the field of sports, emphasizing the shared pride in Arshad Nadeem’s remarkable accomplishment on the global stage.

Senior Minister reviews Punjab Climate Change Policy & Action Plan

LAHORE, Aug 10 (APP):In the light of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s vision for the elimination of smog along and hazardous impacts of climate change, the ‘Punjab Climate Change Policy & Action Plan 2024’ has been given the final shape.
Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb presided over a meeting here on Saturday in which it has been decided to submit ‘Punjab Climate Change Policy & Action Plan 2024’ in the cabinet meeting.
The Secretary Environment & Climate Change presented the proposed manuscript in the meeting and gave a detailed briefing in this regard as well.
Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb lauded the manuscript quality of the ‘Punjab Climate Change Policy & Action Plan 2024’ and commended the team on making dedicated efforts in its preparation. The Senior Minister directed that the manuscript should be sent to all the relevant stakeholders. It was decided in the meeting to expedite the ‘Plant for Pakistan’ campaign, making green investment in the affected sectors along with incorporating ‘Climate Change Education’ in the educational curriculum.
The proposal to conserve and utilise rainwater in the government buildings along with launching these experimental programs in various districts was reviewed in the meeting. The proposal to establish a ‘Water Quality Monitoring System’ to assess quality of water along with introducing laws to control underground water was also reviewed.
The proposal to introduce latest methods in the irrigation system for water conservation along with establishing small dams in the Pothohar and Rohi areas was unanimously agreed. The proposal to launch a ‘Special Management Plan’ to save South Punjab from famine was comprehensively reviewed in the meeting.
The proposal to grant climate-friendly interest-free loans to small scale business persons was put forth in the meeting. The Secretary Environment said that the motive behind the formidable steps is to generate better capability to counter and cope up with hazardous climate change effects. Climate change is not only increasing earth’s temperature but the intensity of heat as well. The destructive effects of climate change are coming to surface in the shape of frequent  occurrence of floods, famine and forests fire incidents. Punjab is emitting approximately 95,000 kilotonnes of greenhouse gases and 7017 kilotonnes health injurious gases. High temperature hot spots persist in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Mianwali, DG Khan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Sargodha, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur and Multan.
Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said, “Climate change is a global issue which pertains to human life and death. Climate change effects are causing a colossal loss to the global climate and destruction to human lives as well. CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s vision is to save human and animal lives. Besides taking concrete steps, awareness needs to be imparted to all segments of people about the importance of planting trees so as to save the climate from toxic effects of  injurious and poisonous gases.”
Secretary Environment & Climate Change Raja Jahangir Anwar, CEO Urban Unit Omer Masood, Climate Soecialists and other relevant officials attended the meeting.

MWMC to launch grand cleanliness operation to mark Independence Day

MULTAN, Aug 10 (APP):Multan Waste Management Company (MWMC) has decided to launch a comprehensive and grand cleanliness operation to mark the Independence Day in the city.
In a statement issued here on Saturday, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) MWMC, Kabir Khan said that cleanliness operation had been started at all government buildings, shrines, markets and educational institutes while roads were being washed by using latest technical sweepers and heavy machinery in the city. He said that the MWMC had set up a special camp at shrine of Hazrat Bahuddin Zakariya in connection with the upcoming annual Urs while control room had also been set up in the city to resolve public complaints on priority.
The CEO MWMC maintained that during the Urs celebrations, the staff of the company would ensure cleanliness of shrine and surrounded areas round the clock. He said that MWMC would give a gift in shape of best cleanliness of the city to the citizens on the Independence Day.
He said that special tribute would also be paid to the sanitary workers of Multan Waste Management Company on Independence Day.
