Ethiopian ambassador felicitates Pakistani nation on Independence Day

ISLAMABAD, Aug 14 (APP): Special Envoy and Ambassador of Ethiopia to Pakistan Jemal Beker Abdula on Wednesday felicitated the government and people of Pakistan on their 77th year of Independence.

He said the past years were a testament to the growing bilateral relations between the two countries.

The ambassador said he is deeply impressed by its impressive history, rich culture and heritage and on top of that its remarkable people who achieved brilliance in every walks of life ranging from science and technology to politics, diplomacy and sports, a reflection of which has been witnessed a couple of days back in Paris 2024 Olympics with one of its heroes Arshad Nadeeem bringing gold medal to this nation.

“Ethiopia and Pakistan are two brotherly nations and share a strong brotherly bond which is deeply rooted in shared history, cultural and political values and common goals of development and prosperity,” he remarked.

The ambassador expressed gratitude to the government and people of Pakistan for their warm hospitality and camaraderie extended to him and his team during his stay in this country.

“The exchange of knowledge, experiences, and appreciation of each other’s cuisine and culture has been an enlightening journey for me, so far. Pakistanis are a lovely nation, and I am grateful for the friendship and cooperation extended to my country in the areas of politics, economy, science and technology and climate change,” he noted.

He assured that the government of Ethiopia is committed to further strengthening and deepening the bilateral relations between the two countries. “By taking special initiatives and fostering robust cooperation in various fields, we can propel our nations towards a new era of enhanced partnership and mutual prosperity,” he added.

Faryal felicitates nation on Independence Day

She remarked that celebrating 77 years of independence symbolizes the national unity and dignity.

In her message, Faryal Talpur highlighted that Pakistan’s Independence Day commemorates the sacrifices made by Muslims in the region.

She said that today serves as a reminder to strengthen democratic values and to defeat anti-national elements through mutual solidarity.

Faryal Talpur emphasized that on this 78th anniversary of independence, “we are committed to envisioning a bright future. Insha’Allah, our future generations will also celebrate the thousandth anniversary of our freedom.”

USAID provides health care equipments to flood-affected districts of Sindh, Balochistan

ISLAMABAD, Aug 14 (APP):The United States Government, through USAID, has handed over 5,000 lady health worker kits, 90 maternal, neonatal, and child health  packages, and 120 birthing stations to improve health services in eleven flood-affected districts of Sindh and Balochistan.
These supplies, part of USAID’s $27.8 million investment in the health sector’s flood response, will enable lady health workers and health facilities to provide better health services to more than 80,000 children and 100,000 married women of reproductive age, said a press release.
The devastating floods in June 2022 severely disrupted health services in Sindh and Balochistan, affecting over 13 million people and exposing them to waterborne and vector-borne diseases.
This crisis worsened issues in routine immunization, maternal health, and child malnutrition.
In response, USAID and its partners assessed health commodity needs in the hardest-hit districts and identified critical shortages.
The commodities delivered during the handover reflect the needs of these communities and align with national priorities.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, USAID Mission Director Kate Somvongsiri emphasized the long-term impact of this assistance.
“The donation of $2.3 million in equipment marks a significant investment in strengthening the health resilience of flood-affected communities in Sindh and Balochistan.”
“By enhancing health service delivery and ensuring the availability of essential commodities, we can save lives and build resilience against future crises,” remarked Dr Malik Mukhtar Ahmad Bharath, Coordinator to Prime Minister, MoNHSRC.
Speaking on the occasion Minister for Health and Population Sindh Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho said that this assistance has been pivotal in improving Pakistan’s health system’s capacity to respond to public health emergencies and ensure continuity of essential health services.

Limited, the 1320 MW Coal Fired Power Plant (CFPP) in Sahiwal, became a vibrant stage through celebrating the Independence Day celebrations on Wednesday with a number of vibrant activities, showing a remarkable bond between Chinese and Pakistani staff.
The plant’s annual observance of Pakistan’s Independence Day was a profound testament to the camaraderie and unity between its Chinese and Pakistani staff.
This year’s festivities were marked by heartfelt ceremonies that showcased a remarkable bond between the two nations. The day began with a traditional flag-raising ceremony, a moment of great significance for the Pakistani employees.
As the Pakistani flag was hoisted against the backdrop of the power plant, the ceremony was conducted with great reverence and national pride, said a news release.

Oxford Pakistan Programme announces its Graduate Scholarships for 2024-25 on Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day

ISLAMABAD, Aug 14 (APP):The Oxford Pakistan Programme (OPP) has announced its graduate scholarships for the 2024-25 academic year on the occasion of Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day celebrations.
The OPP will support twelve exceptional scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, ranging from law and social sciences to engineering and medicine.
Founded just four years ago by Pakistani academics and alumni of the University of Oxford, the OPP has rapidly become the fastest-growing academic platform in any major western university that is dedicated to creating scholarship opportunities for talented Pakistani origin students.
This year, the OPP received around 100 applications from outstanding students who had received admission offers from Oxford University but lacked the financial means to pursue their Oxford dream.
Among the scholarship recipients are two exceptionally talented students from Sindh. Junaid Memon from Khairpur will pursue a DPhil in Engineering, while Anum Khan from Dadu, Sindh will read for a M.Sc. in Surgical Science and Practice.
The former will be supported by the Hamid Ismail Foundation in Karachi and the latter by renowned London businessman and entrepreneur Suleman Raza.
The OPP is also proud to announce Ms. Zainab Aziz as the recipient of the prestigious Malala Yousafzai Scholarship. A self-made professional with a public schooling background, Ms. Aziz currently serves as an Assistant Director at the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA).
The Tareen Scholarship, sponsored by Ali Tareen, is supporting two outstanding scholars this year, Beenish Iqbal (M.Sc. Clinical Trials) and Jabir Ali (DPhil in Chemical Biology) (a continuing OPP scholar).
Scholarship recipients also include Mr. Mohad Zulfiqarwho will pursue the highly competitive Oxford BCL degree (Bachelor of Civil Law), and Ayeda Hamed, a Princeton graduate who will study for an M.Phil in Development Studies with the support of the Malala Fund and the Hamid Ismail Foundation.
Continuing scholars from last year who will receive ongoing support include Ahmed Salman (DPhil in Computer Science) and Ajmal Mughal (DPhil in Music). Furthermore, the OPP will provide a supplementary grant to Ms. Walifa Waqar, an incoming Sir Anwar Parvez Scholar, who will pursue a DPhilin Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics.
A key mission of the OPP is to increase graduate access for British Pakistanis, who are severely underrepresented at Oxford University. This year, partial scholarships were awarded to several talented British Pakistanis, including Raiyan Haq (M.Sc. in Economics for Development) and Syed Humaid Abid (M.Sc. in Taxation). Both students have demonstrable potential to contribute to both British public life and Pakistan’s development.
According to a news release, the decisions for OPP scholarships are based on three main criteria including academic merit, the potential for the scholarship to be a life-changing opportunity and the candidate’s potential to contribute to Pakistan’s development or to the development of overseas Pakistani communities.
While announcing the awards, OPP co-founders Professor Adeel Malik, Dr. Talha Pirzada, and Mr. Haroon Zaman expressed their gratitude to the expanding and committed community of donors whose support is helping to create a pool of outstanding students who can become future leaders in their respective fields.
The OPP’s Graduate Scholarship Programme is supported by the Malala Fund, Mr. Ali Tareen, the Hamid Ismail Foundation, Syed Sheheryar Ali of Treet Corporation, Mr. Asad and Mr. Omar Ghauri of Netsol Technologies, and a growing number of overseas businessmen and professionals, including Mr. Sarwar Khawaja, Mr. Suleman Raza, Mr. Mohammed Khaishgi, entrepreneurs Mr. Areeb Azam, Mr. Sheraz Mahmood, and Mr. Ammad Ahmed, Shamyl Malik and Dr. Omer Suleman (cofounders of Haruko), Dr. Tariq Zaman, senior consultant at Cromwell Hospital and former Federal Secretary Mr. Owais Ahmed Pirzada.
Institutionally anchored at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, the OPP has received strong patronage from the College and is grateful to all members of the College who have extended the OPP their support, including the Principal, Professor Stephen Blyth, and Tutor for Graduates, Dr Ben Higgins.
Commenting on the significance of this academic initiative, the OPP’s co-founders emphasized the importance of creating hope and opportunities for Pakistan’s growingly youthful population, which is eager for advancement, as well as the importance of investing in the large British Pakistani community in the UK.
They noted that several decades ago, students were at the forefront of the Pakistan movement. Today, the Oxford Pakistan Programme is building a transmission belt of talent for Pakistan’s rejuvenation.

Rivers Indus, Kabul still run in medium, low flood

ISLAMABAD, Aug 14 (APP):The Federal Flood Commission (FFC) has said that presently, River Indus is experiencing Medium Flood in Guddu-Sukkur Reach whereas it is in Low Flood at Tarbela-Kalabagh-Chashma-Taunsa reaches while River Kabul is also running in Low Flood at Warsak.
According to daily FFC report on Wednesday, all other major rivers of the Indus River System i.e. Rivers Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej are discharging normal flows. The current Combined Live Storage of the country’s major reservoirs (Tarbela, Mangla & Chashma) stands at 10.573 MAF (79.17% of the total live storage capacity of 13.354 MAF).
According to the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), Lahore, yesterday’s trough of Strong Westerly Wave over northwestern Iran lies over Northern parts of Iran and yesterday’s upper air cyclonic circulation over Northeastern Rajasthan (India) moved slightly westwards, however it continues to prevail over Northeastern Rajasthan (India). Light to Moderate Moist currents are penetrating into most parts of Pakistan from Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal up to 5,000 feet. Seasonal Low lies over Northern Balochistan.
For the next 24 hours, FFD, Lahore has predicted scattered thunderstorm rain of Moderate Intensity over the Upper Catchments of all the major rivers. Isolated Thunderstorm rain of Moderate Intensity over Islamabad, Punjab (Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore, Bahawalpur & DG Khan Divisions), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Peshawar, Kohat, Bannu & DI Khan Divisions) and Balochistan (Zhob, Sibbi, Nasirabad & Kalat Divisions).

IRSA releases 386,200 cusecs water

ISLAMABAD, Aug 14 (APP):Indus River System Authority (IRSA) on Wednesday released 386,200 cusecs water from various rim stations with inflow of 427,500 cusecs.
 According to the data released by IRSA, water level in River Indus at Tarbela Dam was 1547.00 feet and was 149.00 feet higher than its dead level of 1,398 feet. Water inflow and outflow in the dam was recorded as 280,700 cusecs and 251,700 cusecs respectively.
The water level in River Jhelum at Mangla Dam was 1210.90 feet, which was 162.90 feet higher than its dead level of 1,050 feet. The inflow and outflow of water was recorded 22,300 cusecs and 10,000 cusecs respectively.
The release of water at Kalabagh, Taunsa , Guddu and Sukkur was recorded as 290,700, 318,100, 392,400 and 350,500 cusecs respectively. Similarly, from River Kabul, a total of 59,400 cusecs of water released at Nowshera and 47,700 cusecs released from River Chenab at Marala.

PHA celebrates 78th Independence Day with fireworks, cultural program

RAWALPINDI, Aug 14 (APP):Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) Rawalpindi here on Tuesday night organized a fireworks and cultural program to celebrate 78th Independence Day.
On the occasion, a spectacular fireworks show, live performance and cultural dance were organized at Liaquat Bagh. The famous folk singers, Mash Baloch and Israr mesmerized the audiences with traditional folk dances and songs.
A large number of citizens attended the Independence Day program to celebrate the precious moments.
Director General, Parks and Horticulture Authority Ahmed Hasan Ranjha said that the 78th Independence Day of the country was celebrated in a befitting manner and in this regard special lighting and music festival were organized by PHA and district administration.
He informed that all main city buildings and roads were illuminated to celebrate the Independence Day.
He further said that on the special instructions of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz, a plantation campaign was also organized on the occasion of Independence Day this year and in this regard, a special campaign ‘Plant a Tree for Pakistan’ was arranged.
The citizens were urged to come forward and play a role for the success of the plantation campaign, he added.
