LAHORE, Jan 31 (APP):An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Wednesday set aside the order declaring former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry a proclaimed offender (PO) in two May 9 cases.
The court also directed a consolidated investigation into all related May-9 cases against Fawad Chaudhry.
ATC Judge Naveed Iqbal passed the orders on an application filed by Fawad Chaudhry against declaring him proclaimed offender.
The applicant’s counsel had argued before the court that an ATC declared his client a proclaimed offender in cases of torching Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz office and a container over not attending court proceedings. He argued that Fawad Chaudhry was in judicial custody in connection with other cases and imprisoned in Adiala Jail Rawalpindi from November 4, 2023. He submitted that his client could be summoned by issuing a notice but the court declared him a proclaimed offender. He contended that a detained accused could not be declared proclaimed offender as per law. He pleaded with the court to set aside the order.

QUETTA, Jan 31 (APP):The National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) on Wednesday held its consultations with provincial stakeholders in Quetta on the preparation of the National report on “Need Analysis for Financing and Strengthening Institutions with a gender perspective for Empowerment of Women and Girls”.
This report is aimed to be presented by the commission in CSW68 to be held this year from March 11th to 22nd on the theme: “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.”
Consortium partners (UNFPA, UNICEF, UN Women & UNDP) were present today and remained a part of the consultations held across Pakistan.
Chairperson NCSW Nilofar Bakhtiar in her welcome address extended gratitude to the Consortium partners for their continued support of NCSW and pre-CSW consultations. Talking about women in Pakistan and specifically Balochistan, she said females are deprived of their fundamental rights of equal opportunities for education, health, and economic growth.
Females in rural areas, which are in majority in Balochistan, are very less educated and informed of their basic rights. Unfortunately out of 27 per cent of literate females in Balochistan, only 2 per cent are rural-based. We need to understand that eradicating poverty is not possible without empowering women economically and providing them with equal opportunities to live and grow.
Our focus towards sustainable remedies for gender-related challenges with a particular focus on economic empowerment and the eradication of poverty is needed. Civil Society Organizations, government departments and the commercial sector need to play their part towards gender equality to minimize poverty.
The chief guest of the first session, Home Minister Balochistan Capt.(retd) Muhammad Zubair, applauded the efforts of NCSW. He stated that women in Balochistan are progressive, viable, and performing their roles in every area.
Our government is committed to eradicating poverty and providing our people with equal opportunities to grow.
We do believe communities cannot end poverty without gender equality. Education, vocational training, and health facilities for women are our emphasis.
Secretary NCSW Khawaja Imran thanked the chief guest for his presence and resolved to curb gender inequality. He thanked the consortium partners for their continued support of NCSW for its consultations across Pakistan. He also thanked the chief guest, government officials, civil society and media personnel present at the occasion.
The chief guest for the closing session, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Aman Ullah Kinrani said that the provincial government acknowledges the fact that empowering women is not just a matter of social justice but also an economic imperative.
Women’s inclusion and access to equal opportunities call for the need to create equal opportunities for women in all sectors, ensuring that they have the same access to education, employment, and entrepreneurship. The issue of the gender gap can be addressed by the promotion of transparency and adherence to national and international commitments.
Chairperson for Balochistan CSW Fauzia Shaheen thanked the efforts of NCSW for its support to the Balochistan Commission towards initiatives of poverty and economic uplift of women.
She said investing in women’s education and job training programs can be a key driver for sustainable development, social progress, and inclusive growth. Economically empowered women can lead progressive societies towards prosperous economies.
Speaking on the occasion, consortium partners from UNFPA, UNICEF, UNDP, and UN Women assured their commitment towards support to NCSW and shared their confidence in the efforts of NCSW in building grounds across Pakistan to provide women with their basic rights.
The consultations in Quetta were fruitful and provided valuable insights from provincial stakeholders. The NCSW will now compile the reports from all provinces and finalize the National report for submission to the CSW68.

FAISALABAD, Jan 31 (APP): Former Interior Minister/Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Punjab President Rana Sanaullah Khan on Wednesday said that all necessary arrangements had been finalized for power show of the PML-N in Dhobi Ghat Ground Faisalabad on February 02, 2024 (Friday).
Addressing a corner meeting during his election campaign in his constituency NA-100 here, he said the PML-N would arrange a mammoth public gathering at Dhobi Ghat Ground where the PML-N Supremo Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz would address the public meeting.
He said that the public meeting would prove beyond any doubt that Faisalabad was still citadel of the PML-N which was the only pro-people party in the country.
He appealed to the people to participate in the public gathering and prove that they had full confidence in the leadership of Nawaz Sharif who was a symbol of national progress and prosperity.
He said that Nawaz Sharif despite huge foreign pressure made Pakistan an atomic power by conducting six explosions in response to 5 atomic explosions of India.
He said that in 2013, Pakistan was experiencing unprecedented load-shedding while incidents of terrorism were rampant in the country when the PML-N took reins of the government. However, the PML-N government under dynamic leadership of then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif overcame the menace of load-shedding and terrorism up to 2017, he added.
He said that Pakistan was making progress at fast track when the PML-N government was expelled under a deep-rooted conspiracy and an ineligible man was clamped on the nation who not only divided the nation but also put the country into the quagmire of economic instability. He said that the incompetent man (PTI founder) did not launch any worth-mentioning development project in the country rather he implicated his political opponents in false and fabricated cases but now he and his cronies were bearing the brunt of their misdeeds. This man injected poison in the mind of young generation which resulted in a horrific tragedy of 9th May when monuments of national heroes were insulted and sensitive military installations were vandalized. Now these elements were facing outcomes of what they had committed on 9th May, Rana added.
He said that PTI founder leveled allegations of corruption against his political opponents but at the same time he looted the national wealth through his cronies and now all things which he stolen from Tosha Khan had come into light and the nation became well-aware of it.
He said that at present the country was facing ever worst price hike which made the life of ordinary man very miserable. The PML-N would redress this problem on top priority if the masses gave it a chance to form government, he added.

Two-day seminar held on assistive technology

0

ISLAMABAD, Jan 31 (APP): Learning, Acting, and Building for Rehabilitation in Health Systems (ReLAB-HS) has organized a two-day seminar to deliberate on the standardization of assistive technology (AT).

The event served as a vital platform for fostering discussion, promoting collaboration, and catalyzing policy initiatives in healthcare accessibility, particularly for rehabilitation and AT.

Hosted by ReLAB-HS, a five-year global activity funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the roundtable drew a diverse array of participants, including high-level representatives from government, policymakers, rehabilitation and health care professionals, industry representatives, advocacy experts, and faculty from Johns Hopkins University.

The primary objective of the event was to confront the challenges surrounding reimbursement policies and standardization practices in the provision of assistive products in Pakistan.

Federal Director General of Health Dr. Muhammad Ahmed Kazi remarked this a great initiative, stating that Pakistan is already doing significant work to provide rehabilitation and AT services through social security schemes.

“More work is needed to come up with a sustainable mechanism for widening the access to rehab and AT services and to lessen the burden on the government institutions.”

He thanked ReLAB-HS team and the stakeholders for sitting together to have discussion on this important subject.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Abdul Gafoor Bachani, Director of ReLAB-HS, highlighted that in Pakistan, 94% of AT users bear out-of-pocket expenses, presenting a barrier for many and indicating a significant unmet need for assistive products among individuals with functional limitations.

Dr. Bachani stressed the imperative of collaboration among governmental entities, the private sector, and nongovernmental organizations to streamline reimbursement mechanisms for assistive products, which are presently convoluted and redundant.

He proposed that facilitating connections between individuals in need of assistive products and relevant organizations could alleviate the financial burden on health departments.

During the discussions, the expert panels conducted thorough analyses of current reimbursement policies and standardization procedures for assistive products in Pakistan.

Participants shared insights, experiences, and recommendations to address existing gaps and enhance the overall landscape.

Reflecting on the significance of the initiative, Dr. Abdul Ghaffar, a Senior Advisor for ReLAB-HS, emphasized that the policy roundtable marked a pioneering effort in addressing challenges encountered by individuals reliant on assistive products.

“By bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders, we have laid the groundwork for collaborative efforts to enhance reimbursement policies and standardization practices, ultimately improving access and quality of life for people in need of rehabilitation,” Dr. Ghaffar noted.

Dr. Zia Dawar, Global Coordinator and Country Coordinator for ReLAB-HS Pakistan, underscored the program’s collaborative efforts with federal and provincial governments to integrate rehabilitation and AT services into the health care system.

He highlighted ongoing engagements with the federal and provincial health authorities to develop strategic policy plans at both the federal and provincial levels.

The roundtable facilitated meaningful interactions among the key stakeholders, fostering collaboration among government authorities, health care providers, representatives of nongovernmental organizations, and advocacy practitioners.

The participants collectively formulated actionable policy recommendations aimed at enhancing reimbursement mechanisms and standardization processes for assistive products, which will be presented to relevant authorities to effect positive policy changes.

ISLAMABAD, Jan 31 (APP): Federal Minister of Health Dr Nadeem Jan on Wednesday said that the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination was committed to take all possible measures to regulate industrially produced trans-fatty acids in all foods and reduce consumption of unhealthy diets to save precious lives.

He said this during a meeting with a coalition of organizations, including the Centre for Peace and Development Initiatives (CPDI), Pakistan Youth Change Advocates (PYCA), Pakistan National Heart Association and the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI).

During the meeting, the minister’s attention was drawn to the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) linked to the prevalence of industrially produced trans fatty acids (iTFAs) in Pakistani dietary sources.

The minister said “We are ready to call upon an inter-ministerial meeting with the Ministry of Science and Technology to help regulate industrially produced trans-fatty acids in all foods and to adopt the best practice policy.”

The organizations collectively recommended a series of actions to the Ministry of National Health Services, Coordination and Regulation (MoNHSC&R).

They also urged the government to combat the consumption of unhealthy foods through a complete ban on the procurement and serving of ultra-processed food items, especially sweet drinks in official meetings and functions.

Industrially produced trans fatty acids are recognized contributors to NCDs, such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.

It may be mentioned that 29% of deaths in Pakistan are attributed to cardiovascular diseases, and 43 million Pakistanis suffer from hypertension. With 44 million people in the country either living with diabetes or being pre-diabetic, Pakistan currently holds the top position among countries in terms of diabetes prevalence.
