SC to hear bail petitions of accused in May 9 cases

ISLAMABAD, Aug 20 (APP): The Supreme Court of Pakistan will hear post arrest bail petition on Wednesday filed by two accused allegedly involved in riots of May 9.
A division bench, comprising Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah would take up the case for hearing on August 21.
The Registrar Office of the top court has issued the cause list in this regard.

PCB contradicts news item regarding ICC Champions Trophy

LAHORE, Aug 20 (APP):The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday contradicted a news item carried by a section of media suggesting that the dates for next year’s ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan might be rescheduled.
“It is disappointing that certain media outlets have misrepresented PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s comments from yesterday’s media interaction, misleadingly quoting him on the potential change of dates for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to security concerns, thus creating unnecessary sensationalism,” the PCB clarified in a press release.
“During the media talk, which is available on the PCB’s official YouTube channel, the PCB Chairman clearly stated that the redevelopment and redesign of the three designated stadia would be completed on schedule, ensuring readiness to host the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The PCB Chairman also mentioned that while some domestic matches may need to be shifted to facilitate uninterrupted construction work, this in no way pertains to the ICC Champions Trophy, which remains a priority for the PCB as a premier eight-team international event.
“The PCB is fully committed to hosting a world-class ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at three of Pakistan’s iconic venues, ensuring an unforgettable experience for our passionate cricket fans. In line with this commitment, the PCB has already submitted a draft schedule to the International Cricket Council (ICC), with the proposed dates spanning from 19 February to 9 March 2025.”

SUKKUR, Aug 20 (APP):Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sukkur, Dr Raja MB Dharejo presided over a meeting to review development schemes in the district under the annual development program on Tuesday.
In the meeting, Deputy Director Planing, XEN Public Health and other officers of departments concerned participated.
Deputy Director Planning and Development  briefed the DC about ongoing and new schemes in the district. The deputy commissioner directed officers concerned to ensure the completion of the schemes on time and warned that no compromise would be made on the quality of the material.

Major Operation; Police busted 6 drug pushers

RAWALPINDI, Aug 20 (APP):Police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested six drug pushers during a crackdown and recovered more than 7 kg drugs from their possessions.
According to police spokesman, R.A Bazaar police held Adnan Maqsood and recovered 1.8 kg drugs from his possession.
Similarly, Saddar Wah police found 1.6 kg of drugs from Osama Rashid.
While, Ratta Amaral police seized 1.4 kg drugs from Faizan and 1.2 kg drugs from Raheel.
Following operation, Cantt police confiscated 530 gram of charas from Imran.
Additionally, Gujjar Khan police recovered 520 gram of charas from Daniyal Kayani.
Police have registered separate cases against all of them and started investigation.
City Police Officer (CPO) Syed Khalid Mehmood Hamdani commended police teams and said that legal action is being taken against all the accused.
CPO vowed to continue earnest efforts against drug trafficking and to combat the drug from society effectively.

Lahore Chamber, UK-Pakistan Trade & Investment Board sign MoU for economic cooperation

LAHORE, Aug 20 (APP):The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and the UK-Pakistan Trade and Investment Board (UPTIB) here Tuesday officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen economic ties between the business communities of Pakistan and the United Kingdom.
The agreement marks a significant step towards enhancing trade, investment, and economic collaboration between the two countries.
The MoU was signed by LCCI President Kashif Anwar and CEO-Pakistan of UPTIB Tajammel Hussain on behalf of their respective sides.
In his address, Kashif Anwar expressed his optimism about the partnership, stating, “This MoU is a significant milestone in our efforts to enhance bilateral trade relations with the United Kingdom. By facilitating mutual economic cooperation, we are opening doors for business communities to explore new opportunities and strengthen existing ties. Lahore Chamber is committed to support our members in every possible way to achieve sustainable economic growth.”
He added that the partnership aims to foster mutual economic cooperation, promote business opportunities and facilitate trade in goods and services among the members of both organizations. Under the terms of the agreement, both parties have committed to exchanging business publications, research reports, market surveys and other relevant materials regularly. Additionally, the MoU outlines plans for organizing B2B meetings, exhibitions, fairs, seminars and conferences to introduce business circles to the economic and export opportunities available in both countries.
The MoU also highlights the importance of resolving trade and commercial disputes through Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms, encouraging members of both organizations to utilize the ADR Centers established by LCCI and UPTIB.
The collaboration is expected to create a robust platform for bilateral trade and investment, contributing to the economic growth of both Pakistan and the United Kingdom. The signing of this MoU reflects the shared commitment of LCCI and UPTIB to fostering stronger economic ties and creating new opportunities for businesses on both sides.
Tajammel Hussain, CEO of the UK-Pakistan Trade & Investment Board said that Pakistan is among 65 countries benefiting from UK duty-free imports under a new trade scheme. He said that UPTIB is committed increase the volume of mutual trade between Pakistan and UK.
He also revealed plans to attract potential investors to Pakistan aiming to boost economic growth and strengthen trade relations. He assured that importers and exporters would receive comprehensive support in navigating market access, customs procedures and other essential trade-related matters. This initiative is expected to create new opportunities and further integrate Pakistan into the global trading system.

Work on privatization of DISCOs geared up

ISLAMABAD, Aug 20 (APP): Minister for Privatization, Board of Investment and Communications Abdul Aleem Khan on Tuesday said that the privatization of Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) is being processed and initial work in this regard has been geared up.

Moreover, advertisements have also been launched in international media on August 17, he said in a high-level meeting co-chaired by privatisation Minister and Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Laghari, said a press release.

Abdul Aleem Khan observed that the privatization of DISCOs will be completed in different phases in which transparency and technical aspects must be kept into consideration.

He said that wherever possible, the process of privatization should be completed in the shortest possible time.

Briefing the meeting, Secretary Privatization and senior officials told that the complete schedule for the privatization of “DISCOs” has been prepared and its final approval will be taken from the Cabinet Committee and the federal government.

Appointment of Financial Advisor, market sounding, restructuring level and other important issues of privatization of DISCOs also came under discussion in this meeting.

Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Laghari directed that the issues necessary for the privatization of DISCOs should be dealt with as soon as possible and access to the details and data of these institutions should be handed over to the interested parties.

Meanwhile, Minister Abdul Aleem Khan while speaking at the meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Communications said that without a doubt the pressure of vehicles and traffic on our roads is a big problem which is being worked on coordinated basis.

He said that with a little effort and attention on the National Highway and Communication Departments we can make it profitable.

He said that there is immense potential in the Department of Communication which by utilizing it can generate revenue for the Government treasury.

Abdul Aleem Khan further said that the Communication Department will have to adopt the Axle Load Control System by developing it on modern lines.

The toll tax system is in use all over the world which is a major source of revenue through road infrastructure but we are not using this system and are still far behind in achieving substantial results, Abdul Aleem Khan concluded.

LWMC issues 297 challans, registers 38 FIRs for illegal dumping

LAHORE, Aug 20 (APP):Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) enforcement teams have issued 297 challans and imposed fines exceeding Rs800,000 besides registering 38 FIRs over illegal dumping of waste in the provincial capital during August.
According to a spokesman for the company, following the directives of Chief Executive Officer Babar Sahib Din, enforcement teams have been actively deployed across the city to uphold the sanitation system. During this month, some 15,500 locations were inspected and 14 vehicles were impounded while warning notices were also issued to 1,340 individuals for littering.
In an important meeting with contractors from private housing societies, chaired by CEO Babar Sahib Din, it was resolved to take strict action against illegal dumping. Contractors have been warned of severe consequences for violating the Local Government Act. CEO Babar Sahib Din stated that dumping garbage in open plots and littering on roads would not be tolerated.
Private contractors and housing society officials are required to dispose of waste at designated temporary collection points. Legal action has already been taken against 4 contractors, with 4 vehicles being impounded for violating the Local Government Act.
The public is urged to act responsibly by disposing of waste in designated bins and using LWMC’s helpline 1139 and social media channels to report cleanliness-related complaints, he added.
