Punjab ministerial team meets delegation of British Columbia at Vancouver

LAHORE, Jan 27 (APP):On the direction of Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab Mohsin Naqvi, a 3- member ministerial delegation of Punjab met with a ministerial delegation of British Columbia in the Canadian city of Vancouver and agreed to declare British Columbia and Punjab twin provinces.
The delegations reviewed numerous recommendations and proposals for making investments in Punjab, said a handout issued here on Saturday. The Punjab’s ministerial delegation put forth various proposals and recommendations on behalf of CM Mohsin Naqvi for the promotion of bilateral relations.
The delegations agreed to further enhance trade, economic relations and contacts between the two provinces. They mulled over enhancing bilateral tourism opportunities between the two provinces.
The British Columbia’s ministerial delegation also assured to send a maximum number of Punjab’s skilled labour force to British Columbia. The British Columbia’s team comprised Harry Barry, Rachna Singh and Jagrup Brar.
The Pakistani delegation comprised SM Tanveer, Mansoor Qadir and Amir Mir.

Finance Minister attends International Customs Day celebrations in Karachi

ISLAMABAD, Jan 27 (APP):Caretaker Federal Minister for Finance, Revenue and Economic Affairs, Dr Shamshad Akhtar attended the International Customs Day (2024) celebrations in Karachi.
The event was held annually on January 26 to highlight the contributions of customs administrations across the globe, said a news release on Saturday.
The minister graced the occasion as the chief guest which was also attended by diplomats, civil servants, senior officers of the military and civil armed forces, business professionals and media representatives. The ceremony commenced with a Guard of Honor presented to the Chief Guest by a well-dressed contingent of Preventive officers and sepoys of the Collectorate.
Dr Shamsad called upon all stakeholders to work together to secure the international trade supply chain. She expressed optimism that the FBR would collect revenue of more than Rs9.4 trillion during the current financial year.
She said that a reform process based on consultation has also been initiated in FBR and highlighted the importance of Customs in cross-border trade.
The minister emphasized the importance of the Single Window activity in Customs operations. Member Customs Operations, Dr Fareed Iqbal Qureshi reiterated the need for new initiatives to keep abreast of the evolving role of Pakistan Customs for safeguarding the economic frontiers and ensuring all possible facilitation for legitimate trade.
Collector of Customs Enforcement Karachi highlighted the need for inter-agency cooperation to tackle impediments being faced by Customs on the appraisement as well as enforcement side.
The Finance Minister also distributed certificates of merit issued by the World Customs Organization (WCO) for officers rendering exceptional services in the discharge of their duties. In line with the theme this year, Pakistan Customs also recognized other entities and law enforcement agencies for their cooperation in achieving its goals.
Like every year, the World Customs Organization also dedicated this year to a special cause. The year 2024 was dedicated to the theme of “Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose” by the Organization which aptly captures the need for cooperation with other entities for effective service delivery by Customs.

Safe blood to help prevent diseases: Dr. Arif Alvi

KARACHI, Jan 27 (APP): The President Dr Arif Alvi on Saturday said that the prevention measures were needed of the hour to contain diseases in the country.

While lauding the establishment of a blood bank at Indus Hospital and Health Network and its accreditation from the Association for Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB) in blood banking, he said that the milestone achievement would help prevent diseases with the help of safe blood transfusion.

Dr Arif Alvi, speaking at the accreditation celebration ceremony, said that there were multiple challenges the people were facing including malnutrition, obesity, mental health, and breast cancer.

He said that the patients faced a shortage of safe blood in the country. He urged the donors to put in their efforts to further improve the situation in this regard. The President said that the people avoid donating their organs and this kind of culture has to be modified to go in that (right) direction.

He said that the country had tremendous potential to rise. He advised doctors and health professionals to take part in politics for the best healthcare system. Dr Alvi said that the country performed well in the times of COVID and the Polio process. It learned to collect data and information to meet challenges.

Highlighting the issue of out-of-school children, he said that two crore and 62 thousand children, which came to 44 per cent, were not going to school. He further said that they were working on a project to use mosques for education purposes with the help of Ulemas. President of the Indus Hospital and Health Network Dr Abdul Bari Khan said that the hospital had achieved a milestone and it was celebrating the (AABB) accreditation.

He said that the Indus hospital was the first hospital in the country, to gain the accreditation of such a level. on the occasion, the President was briefed about the Indus Hospital’s network in the country in detail. He was also informed that three million patients had been provided with safe blood so far.

Earlier, the President Dr Arif Alvi visited the different sections of the Blood Transfusion Services and appreciated the management and philanthropists.

PML-N chalks out inclusive plan for development of Khyber Pakthunkhwa: Maryam

ABBOTTABAD, Jan 27 (APP):Senior Vice President and Chief Organizer of Pakistan Muslim League (N), Maryam Nawaz here Saturday that his party believed in the power of the masses and chalked out an inclusive plan for the development of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Addressing a big public gathering here, Maryam Nawaz said that the people of KP were deceived in the name of change in the last 10 years of rule of Pakistan Tahrik e Insaf and were deprived of development. Despite 10 years long rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, she said that PTI has not announced its manifesto which spoke of its lacklustre performance in KP.
She said that metro buses and orange trains besides motorway buses were a gift of PMLN supremo Nawaz Sharif. She said that the people of KP wanted the same facilities like orange and metro buses as being enjoyed by the people of Punjab.
Maryam Nawaz said that Nawaz Sharif has special affection with the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including the Hazara division where he constructed a state-of-the-art Hazara motorway that promoted tourism besides opened KP for investment and development.
Murtaza Javed Abbassi, former Deputy Speaker National Assembly said that Hazara was a stronghold of PMLN and the party would get overwhelming victory from there. He said that political opponents were now hiding faces from people due to their poor performance in the last 10 years of rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said that PMLN would change the destiny of people besides alleviating poverty, controlling price hikes and generating employment opportunities for youth.

QWP expresses annoyance at  belated unveiling of polling scheme

PESHAWAR, Jan 27 (APP):Expressing annoyance at the belated unveiling of the polling scheme, Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) Chairman Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao on Saturday said the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) violated the law by delaying the issuance of the polling scheme for the general election slated for February 8.
Addressing a gathering in Doaba area in Charsadda district, he said that under the law, the ECP should have announced the polling scheme 30 days before the election, but the election watchdog also missed the second deadline to publish the polling scheme 15 days before the polling day, said a press release.
Commenting on the ECP’s plan to use the Election Management System (EMS) for election results, Aftab Sherpao said the Result Transmission System’s failure (RTS) was still fresh in our memory; therefore, the election commission should stop experimenting and ensure the holding of the free, fair and transparent election.
The QWP leader said that electricity and gas load-shedding were the two main problems being faced by the residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He said that though skyrocketing, inflation had made life miserable for the people, the high tariff coupled with record gas and electricity load-shedding was adding insult to injury.
He said that KP generated cheap and surplus hydel electricity, but it was unfortunate that the local people were facing power cuts and were receiving inflated bills.
Aftab Sherpao said the QWP would not let the people down and would come up to their expectations by honoring the pledges.
He said the QWP would spare no effort to work for the development of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the wellbeing of its residents.
He said that his party believed in serving the people with any consideration for political affiliations.
He advised the voters to check the track record of the candidates before casting their ballots.
