Elections 2024: Significant change in campaigning strategy observed

MULTAN, Jan 22 (APP):In a departure from traditional electioneering practices, the political landscape for the upcoming 2024 elections is witnessing a notable evolution in the city and its suburbs.
The key changes include a reduction in the prevalence of corner meetings, the absence of small campaign offices at street level, and a deviation from the customary door-to-door canvassing approach.
Political parties and independent candidates are strategically targeting influential figures at the union council level. The candidates are garnering support from former UC chairmen, vice chairmen, councillors, and tribes’ elders, said senior political analyst Mazhar Javed while talking to APP.
He also remarked that the candidates were not found spending amounts on political campaigns as it was observed in past elections.
The candidates are moving away from grassroots campaigning to a more focused alliance-building strategy.
Analyst Malik Arif pointed out that the current political climate was characterized by a lower level of enthusiasm among political workers. Extreme weather conditions have also cast a shadow over the political campaign for Election 2024, impacting the traditional fervour associated with such events.
Another analyst Malik Muhammad Tariq remarked that the candidates were also targeting their voters through social media. They find direct access to voters that is why a complete shift in the election campaigns is being noticed, Tariq added.
Moreover, a noticeable decline in the abundance of banners and panaflexes, which once adorned every street, is also being observed.
Shopkeeper Hamid, who traditionally expected a surge in business during election season, noted a contrast this time.
Despite candidates approaching him for small panaflexes, the number of orders has been surprisingly low, he stated.
The price for these smaller campaign materials, such as panaflex stands at Rs 150 and Rs 4 for a single pocket sticker. In Past, there had been big panaflexes. Now, the Election Commission of Pakistan has recommended small-sized panaflexes, he informed.
Hamid, however, remained optimistic about an uptick in orders in the coming days as the campaign gains momentum.

ISLAMABAD, Jan 22 (APP): Creating an enabling environment to build the capacity of women leaders in politics at the grass-root level is crucial to increasing their participation and representation in higher power corridors, said the speakers at a Master class titled “Women’s Campaign Readiness Program”, organized by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute and partners here on Monday.

Dr Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Executive Director, SDPI remarked that empowerment of women calls for increasing their effective participation in power corridors and their representation should be supported with sufficient financial allocation.

He stressed that the capacity of women leaders should be built from a grassroots level which is only possible by engaging with them. He said that only they can enlighten us about the challenges that confront them especially when conducting electoral campaigns, media engagement and different challenges due to media engagement.

Dr Suleri emphasized that while enhancing the capacity of women leaders is crucial, the role of men in the quest for women’s empowerment cannot be stressed enough. He insisted on sensitizing men about the challenges faced by women and then building their capacity as allies for women’s empowerment.

Senator Seemi Ezdi addressing the session, said that when it comes to political activism and engagement, women face additional challenges as they are engaged in domestic work and must look after their families as well. She said that despite this, the establishment of women’s wings in political parties has played an important role in enhancing women’s engagement in politics.

She said that for every woman entering politics, education and awareness about issues of the masses especially women are critical in enabling their effective role.
Senator Fawzia Arshad said that there is no denial that women face much more challenges in politics than their male counterparts, but they must remain positive and become saviors rather than victims. She said that women should not consider themselves weak but realize their innate strength.

Senator Naeema Kishwar Khan urged that local government systems should be strengthened for effective service delivery to the people. She stressed that representatives of the local government systems should question the parliamentarians of their constituencies about the allocation and use of funds. They must also take the initiative to suggest projects and initiatives that are needed in their areas.

Aisha Sayed, a former member National Assembly shared her journey into politics and stressed that beginning a political journey from the grass-root level equips women leaders with diverse experiences and knowledge of the issues of the common public.

Therefore, she suggested that women must start their journey with grass-root politics. She added that while social norms and family commitments hinder an increase in women’s political representation, their commitment and hard work eventually break these barriers.

Abdullah Khalid, Project Coordinator, SDPI shedding light on the initiative taken by SDPI informed that the program has been designed to build the capacity of women to increase their active and efficient role in political and electoral reforms.

He informed that the training curriculum is based on the need assessment conducted in consultation with political parties as key stakeholders. He added that the review of legislative frameworks in provinces has highlighted the dire need for improvement which calls for enhancing capacity and building knowledge of women leaders.

He added that the aim to increase the representation of women in politics lies at the heart of this agenda.

Participants of the Masterclass comprised elected and aspiring local government representatives from Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

0
ISLAMABAD, Jan 22 (APP):Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), the country’s leading broadband service provider, completed the country’s first successful trial of 50G-PON technology, marking a historic stride towards the introduction of next-generation fiber-optic broadband services in Pakistan.
This groundbreaking achievement is a result of PTCL’s strategic partnership with Huawei, a global leader in information and communication technology, said a news release.
50G-PON, defined by ITU-T as a next-generation Passive Optical Network-based broadband technology, is set to revolutionize Pakistan’s digital landscape.
With significantly higher capabilities than the existing GPON and XG(S)-GPON technologies, 50G-PON delivers an astounding 50 Gbps per PON port.
The technology is poised to reshape future requirements related to Industries, Enterprises, Campuses and Home Environments, as the advancement unlocks the infinite potential for bandwidth-intensive & low-latency next-generation services.
Key use cases include evolution towards Holographic Technologies, XR-based Metaverse in home & workplace, Smart Manufacturing based on 3D Machine Vision, Remote Surgery and Medical Clinics, High Performance Gaming, etc. It will also be a valuable tool for business and enterprise services, and is well-suited to serve Smart Campuses, Video Production Studios, Edge Data Centers and Cloud-Centric SMEs and SoHos, etc.
One of the remarkable features of 50G-PON technology is its ability to coexist seamlessly with GPON and XG(S)-PON over the same physical and passive optical network. This will allow PTCL to provide significantly higher broadband speeds for its customers through an on-demand service upgrade request.
Group Chief Technology and Information Officer (GCTIO), PTCL & Ufone 4G, Jafar Khalid, expressed his enthusiasm on this momentous occasion, stating, “PTCL has achieved another milestone by delivering Pakistan’s first-ever trial of 50G-PON technology.
