Kohat Commissioner reviews CM’s Program ‘Awami Agenda’

PESHAWAR, Aug 21 (APP): Commissioner Kohat Division Syed Motasim Billah Shah on Wednesday reviewed the implementation of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister’s Program “Awami Agenda” during his visit to Karak district.
During his visit, he also reviewed the 6-day cleanliness campaign started in the entire Kohat Division.
The commissioner besides inspecting the cleanliness and public services in the hospitals and government offices of Karak, also participated in the monsoon tree plantation drive, planted saplings, and also distributed saplings among the line departments.
Later, he visited the district secretariat reviewed the cleanliness of the buildings, and gave instructions to further improve the hygiene conditions.
Likewise, Commissioner Kohat along with Deputy Commissioner Karak Shakeel Ahmed Jan also visited Type C Hospital Takht-e-Nasrati and checked the attendance of the staff on duty in the hospital, and inspected emergency and other wards. He met patients and inquired about the medical facilities and services provided in the hospital.
He also inspected the medical equipment and facilities in the hospital and discussed matters to further improve the overall condition of the hospital with the Deputy Commissioner.
Meanwhile, Motasim Billah also held a special meeting with the elders of Karak district. They welcomed Commissioner Kohat by wearing a traditional turban and gave him a detailed briefing on regional issues. The commissioner assured concrete steps for mitigating their problems and issues.

Youth empowerment,  key to Pakistan’s bright future : President Zardari

ISLAMABAD, Aug 21 (APP):President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday said that the youth had significant potential and could greatly elevate country’s reputation if given appropriate opportunities.
In a conversation with Asrar Khan Kakar, the newly elected President of the Oxford Union Society, the president extended his congratulations on his election to the coveted position.
The president highlighted that Asrar Kakar, a resident of Balochistan province, had attained a significant honor through his election and that his achievement would inspire other young people.
 He expressed the optimism that Israr Khan would continue to bring honor to the country with his future achievements.
The president recalled that former Prime Minister Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed was the first Asian woman to serve as President of the Oxford Union.

Governor grieves over death of pilgrims

QUETTA, Aug 21 (APP):Governor Balochistan Jaffar Khan Mandukhail expressed his deep grief over the loss of 35 pilgrims and several injured as a result of the fire on the bus of Pakistani pilgrims near Dasheer Taftan check point on Wednesday.
In his condolence statement, Governor Balochistan said that we shared the grief of the families of all the martyred and injured pilgrims.
He also prayed for forgiveness of the martyrs in this tragic accident and the speedy recovery of the injured and patience and courage to the bereaved families.

FESCO issues shutdown programme

FAISALABAD, Aug 21 (APP):The Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) has issued shutdown programme for Thursday for repair, maintenance and expansion of electricity lines.
According to the programme, power supply from Habib Haseeb (SEL), Johal (SEL), new Asim Textile, Ziyrat (SEL), Shehbaz Garments and JA Textile feeders linked with 132-KV Bandala grid station will remain suspended from 7 a.m. to 12 noon while Dijkot Road and City feeders attached with 132-KV Sammundri grid station, City Tandlianwala, Best Chipboard, Mahi, Tayyabah Town, Jhamra and Raza Abad feeders connected with 132-KV Tandlianwala grid station will observe shutdown from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday (August 22).
Similarly, electricity supply from S-II, Edan Valley, Gulab, Jaranwala Road, Sultani Alasto, Lal Kothi, Borstal Jail, Makkoana, Kararwala and Akbar feeders originating from 132-KV Scarp Colony grid station will also remain suspended from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. on August 22, 2024.

Light scattered rain was witnessed in the city here on Wednesday while MET office predicted similar weather conditions

LAHORE, Aug 21 (APP): Light rain was witnessed in the city here on Wednesday while Meteorological Department predicted similar weather conditions for the next 24 hours.
The rain started at early morning and continued in spans at various city localities till afternoon. After the scattered rain, the humidity level increased and the citizens witnessed hot and humid conditions during rest of the day.
As usual WASA field teams were remain active in the city and MD WASA conducted surprise visits of various low line areas, rain emergency camps and disposal stations of the agency and passed on the spot directions.
Meanwhile, weather officials said monsoon currents from Arabian Sea were penetrating upper and central parts of the country while a westerly wave was also affecting upper parts.
They predicted that partly cloudy weather was expected in most parts of the country. However, rain-wind/thundershower was expected in Kashmir, upper Punjab, Potohar region, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and northeastern Balochistan while heavy falls may also occur at isolated places in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northeast Punjab during the period.
Rainfall was recorded at several cities across the country. Wednesday’s highest maximum temperature was recorded at Nokkundi where mercury reached 44°C while in Lahore it was 35.5°C and minimum was 25°C.

Various food points fined Rs 78,000 for hygiene rules violations

LODHRAN, Aug 21 (APP):The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) teams raided on various food points and imposed Rs 78,000 fine on them for hygiene rules violations.
Food safety teams conducted inspection of 107 food points, including snack units, hotels, and soda water factories. The teams served notices on 29 food business owners for improving hygiene conditions. Following the instructions of the DG Punjab Food Authority, actions were being taken by food safety teams to prevent the sale of poor-quality food.
According to details, a fine of Rs 25,000 was imposed on a snack factory in Mouza Lal Kamal for not labeling finished products, and failing to maintain oil change records.
Similarly, a fine of Rs 10,000 was imposed on a sweets and bakers unit at Adda Pul 4 Dunyapur for using loose spices and Chinese salt.
A soda water factory at Adda Karyanwala was fined Rs 10,000 for using chemical drums to store water and not installing a filtration plant. Furthermore, various fines totaling Rs 18,000 were imposed on a hotel at Adda Karyanwala for not covering food and having dirty water in the freezer, a grocery store at Kahror Chowk for poor sanitation, and another hotel at Sukh Bypass for hygiene violations.

6 shops sealed over encroachments

MULTAN, Aug 21 (APP):The tehsil administration sealed six shops and imposed fine on two hotels during a special crackdown on encroachments on Wednesday.
Taking action on directives of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Vehari Asif Hussain Shah, Assistant Commissioner Burewala Farooq Ahmed launched a crackdown on those involved in leaving building material on roads. The officer sealed six shops for placing material on road and imposed Rs 30,000 fine each on two hotels over violations.

Chairman senate calls for unity between provinces, federal government

HYDERABAD, Aug 21 (APP):The Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani emphasized the importance of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s teachings, highlighting his message of peace, love and compassion. He said that Shah Latif advocated for women’s rights even in his era.
Talking to the media after visiting the shrine on the occasion of the 281st Urs of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai on Wednesday, Gillani said that following Shah Latif’s message could help resolve many of today’s issues. He stressed the need to spread this message far and wide.
Responding to a question about making Bhit Shah a tehsil or district, the Chairman Senate stated that the decision lies with the provincial assembly. He suggested that the assembly should pass a resolution and discuss the matter with the Chief Minister of Sindh, I am confident that he would do something in this matter.
In response to a question about the differences between the provinces and the federal government, he said that considering the political situation, we should work together, this is not the time to have differences. He acknowledged that differences of opinion were part of democracy but democracy should not be run in such a way that national progress, peace and economic conditions deteriorate.
On a question about the statement of Makhdoom Jamil uz Zaman regarding the Sindh government, Gillani suggested that such questions should be asked to the individual who made the statement.
About the imprisonment of a spiritual leader, he said I too had remained in jail for 9 years because I had provided jobs to the poor but never mentioned the name of any judge or institution and had not revealed any state secrets.
He noted that many prominent figures, including former President Asif Ali Zardari and former Prime Ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif also endured imprisonment.
Regarding the arrest of a high-profile individual, Gillani stated that all institutions operate according to their own rules. He said that although I could not get speedy justice, but I recommend the judiciary to provide speedy justice to the victims of May 9.
He highlighted that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had always led initiatives for dialogue among political parties.  The Peoples Party restored the Constitution, made sacrifices for democracy, and remained committed to the rule of law and democratic principles.
Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani mentioned that the issue of the Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway project had been raised in the Senate. He underscored the significance of the project, calling for its timely completion, particularly given Karachi’s role as the economic hub of the country.

Saim, Saud show resilience on challenging opening day of first Test

ISLAMABAD, Aug 21 (APP): Despite early fall wickets, Pakistan managed to score 158 runs in the delayed Test against Bangladesh due to wet outfield at the Pindi Stadium on Wednesday.

Pakistan lost three main key players in nine overs after put into bat but Saim Ayub and Saud Shakeel took Pakistan out of trouble by hitting half-centuries helping Green-shirts to finish 158 for four in 41 overs on a shortened opening day of the first Test.

Ayub went on to score his maiden Test half-century (56 runs) on 98 balls including four 4s and a six while Shakeel remained unbeaten on 57 runs providing a 98-run fourth-wicket partnership. The rescue act between the two southpaws was spread on either side of the tea interval as they batted together for 22.5 overs.

Pacers Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud did the magic for Bangladesh as they bagged two wickets each for 30 and 33 runs, respectively. Bangladesh bowlers reduced Pakistan to 16-3 in 8.2 overs. Abdullah Shafique was the first to depart as he was caught at gully against Hasan Mahmud in the fourth over.

Skipper Shan Masood hit one boundary during his 11-ball stay before falling prey to Shoriful Islam for six runs in the seventh over. Babar Azam was dismissed in the ninth over falling for a two-ball duck off the bowling of Shoriful with Litton Das taking his second catch of the innings.

Saud Shakeel (57 not out, 92b, 5x4s) and Mohammad Rizwan (24 not out, 31b, 2x4s) will stand guard for Pakistan at the beginning of day two.

Saud contributed 42 runs in the stand with Saim before stitching an unbeaten 44-run partnership with Mohammad Rizwan till the close of play.

Saud who is also Pakistan’s Test vice-captain also completed 1,000 runs in the longest format during his first innings in the game and became the joint-fastest Pakistani batter to reach 1000 runs in Test cricket, achieving this feat in just 20 innings. Meanwhile so far, Pakistan has played 13 Tests against Bangladesh, winning 12 and drawing one.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Saim Ayub spoke after the end of Day 1, about his batting approach in the ongoing Test match against Bangladesh, saying, “My goal was to prolong my innings, but sometimes things don’t go as planned.”
Saim acknowledged the challenging conditions early on but credited his partnership with Saud for making batting easier. “We had a good partnership, and I enjoy batting with everyone,” he said.

Regarding the unpredictable nature of Test cricket, Saim noted, “The behavior of the wickets changes, and sometimes the red ball favors us, while other times it doesn’t. It’s part of the game.”
Bangladesh’s Hasan Mahmud praised his team’s bowling efforts and said, “We tried to bowl accurately on our length, and the pitch will help seamers if it becomes harder.”

Hasan emphasized the importance of taking quick wickets, stating, “We’ll come up with a plan to take Pakistan out as quickly as possible.”
He also commended his team’s fielding, saying, “The boys are excellent in the field, taking wonderful catches. It’s great to get help from your fielders.”
