RWMC carries out anti-smog drive

RAWALPINDI, Sep 11 (APP):Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) continually carrying out the cleanliness activities to make the district free from waste and Smog.
RWMC spokesman on Wednesday said that on the instructions of the Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, a grand cleaning operation had been started in Rawalpindi to prevent the looming threat of smog this year under the title “Smog Safe Punjab”.
The objective of the activity was to reach out to a maximum number of people, in order to educate the general public about the precautionary measures to avoid smog, the spokesman said.
He said that washing and mechanical sweeping of major roads of the city including Murree Road, Fifth Road, Sixth Road, Fourth B Road, Iran Road, Saidpur Road, Double Road, Old Airport Road, Civil Lines Road, Iqbal Road, Liaquat Road, Rashid Minhas Road and Red Line and Orange Line tracks of Metro bus was being carried out daily to provide a smog-free environment to the residents of the city.
In a message, RWMC has appealed to the people to not burn waste and chemicals in the open as they were the major cause of smog, adding burning garbage was a legal offence as smoke and dust contributed to smog which was harmful to the environment and human health.
He urged the residents to ensure the spraying of water to prevent dust and to use masks and glasses, adding the promotion of tree plantation was vital for avoiding smog and checking environmental pollution.

Indonesia ready to negotiate FTA with Pakistan for promoting trade liberalization: Rahmat Hindiarta

ISLAMABAD, Sep 11 (APP):Rahmat Hindiarta Kusuma, Charge d’Affaires of the Indonesian Embassy on Wednesday said that Indonesia is ready to negotiate a free trade agreement (FTA) with Pakistan, which will promote bilateral trade liberalization and enhance the business volume.
In order to narrow the trade gap between Indonesia and Pakistan, the business community and chambers of commerce from both sides have to engage and promote bilateral economic and trade integration and also stress for exchanging of business delegations and market awareness by the chambers on both sides have to be done regularly, he said.
He highlighted the rich history of friendship and cooperation between Indonesia and Pakistan during a visit to the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) and a meeting with its President, ICCI Ahsan Zafar Bakhtawari.

Kusuma stressed the importance of utilizing the existing Indonesia-Pakistan Preferential Trade Agreement and working towards a Free Trade Agreement.
The Charge d’Affaires praised ICCI’s contributions to fostering economic linkages between the two nations and invited members to attend the 39th Trade Expo Indonesia from October 9-12.
He further emphasized the need for increased joint events to foster greater awareness and understanding between the two nations, leading to enhanced business and tourism opportunities.
Rahmat Hindiarta encouraged Pakistani businessmen to explore Indonesia’s potential for international trade and investment, emphasizing the need to strengthen business-to-business relations between the two nations.
He also highlighted Indonesia’s strategic location and established trade ties with the ASEAN region, offering Pakistani businesses access to a market of over 650 million consumers of ASEAN.
The diplomat noted that Pakistan can become a trade hub for Indonesia in Central Asia, benefiting both countries through comprehensive planning.

ICCI President Ahsan Zafar Bakhtawari emphasized Pakistan’s status as Indonesia’s 6th largest trade partner in Asia, with relations based on mutual trust and confidence.
He underscored the need for regular trade delegation exchanges and reaffirmed ICCI’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Indonesian Embassy.
Bakhtawari noted that collaborative efforts and mutual understanding are key to overcoming trade challenges, and that working together can unlock new opportunities and enhance economic prosperity.
He emphasized the importance of increasing bilateral trade volume, which is currently below its potential, and highlighted the role of Central Asian markets in further increasing trade relations.
He also underlined the need for direct flights between the two countries further strengthening bilateral trade and investment relations between both the countries.
The meeting concluded with a decision to work together to strengthen Pakistan-Indonesia relations, following a thorough discussion of successful sectors in both countries.
United Business Group Secretary General Zafar Bakhtawari talked about two countries similarities which have helped foster a strong bond between the two countries as well as the strategic locations; Pakistan is at the crossroads of Asia, while Indonesia is at the heart of Southeast Asia.
Maqsood Tabish, Shaikh Mohammad Ejaz, Malik Shabbir, Nasira Ali (Nena), Rabia Raheel, Nageena Khaleeque and  Shahida Jan also contributed their valuable insights to further strengthen the existing bilateral relations between Pakistan and Indonesia.

Absence of sanction post; no programme to regular services of sanitary workers: NA told

ISLAMABAD, Sep 11 (APP):Minister for Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Wednesday informed the National Assembly that due to the absence of sanction posts, currently there was no programme to regular the services of sanitary workers performing their duties in the area of Bakramandi Chowk to Tahli Mohri Chowk under the jurisdiction of Chaklala Cantonment Board (CCB) Rawalpindi.
Replying to a question during Question Hour, he said daily wages staff were contingent paid workers and mostly daily wages staff switch their jobs/works place without intimation permission of the employer they were engaged on purely daily wages basis.
Meanwhile, Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawja told that the Capital Development Authority (CDA) launched various development projects to elevate the infrastructure of services in rural areas of Islamabad to urban standards. There were three projects with estimated cost of Rs. 873.260 million, which were currently under execution in the Directorate, she added.
She said that a sum of Rs 4 billion was earmarked in the budget for development of rural areas of Islamabad Capital
Territory (ICT). Currently, the projects were at the tendering process stage, she added.

CM pays tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah

LAHORE, Sep 11 (APP):Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif paid glowing tribute to founder of Pakistan Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah on his death anniversary, stating, “Salute to the great leader Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.”
In her message, she prayed that May Allah Almighty elevate his ranks in Heaven. She said the edicts of Quaid-e-Azam are a guidance for every Pakistani, adding that Quaid-e-Azam dedicated his life to the dream of a separate homeland for the Muslims of Subcontinent.
Maryam said that love and devotion to Quaid-e-Azam required following his thoughts. “InshaAllah, we will develop Pakistan as per dreams of Quaid-e-Azam.” She prayed, “May Allah Almighty always keep our homeland safe and grant us the ability to stay united for development.” She also advised that hard work, honesty, and integrity should be our guiding principles to make Pakistan a great nation, in line with Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s vision.

Minister Naqvi pays tribute to Quaid-e-Azam on 76th death anniversary

ISLAMABAD, Sep 11 (APP):On the 76th death anniversary of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Federal Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi delivered a heartfelt tribute, reflecting on the enduring legacy of the nation’s founding father. In a statement released on Wednesday, Naqvi emphasized Jinnah’s pivotal role in shaping the destiny of Pakistan through his steadfast determination, integrity, and visionary leadership.
Naqvi described Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah as a figure defined by “relentless struggle, unwavering determination, high spirit, and honesty,” and credited his courageous leadership as the cornerstone of Pakistan’s independence. “Without the Quaid’s remarkable resolve, the dream of an independent country would have remained unrealized,” Naqvi asserted.
The minister underscored the profound impact of Jinnah’s principles on the nation’s identity and progress. He highlighted that the Quaid-e-Azam’s vision of equality transcended linguistic, class, and group distinctions, ensuring equal rights for all, including minorities. Naqvi lamented the departure from these foundational principles, which he believes has hindered Pakistan’s advancement on the global stage.
Naqvi reiterated that Jinnah’s principles and edicts serve as a guiding light for the nation. Climate-vulnerable HKH countries’ collaboration must to protect lives, livelihoods of two billion people: Romina

ISLAMABAD, Sep 11 (APP):Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam on Wednesday said that rapid glacial melting and resultant floods in Hindukhush Karakokram Himalaya (HKH) region has put lives and livelihoods of nearly two billion people at risk and, pose serious threats to the socio-economic sustainability of the regional countries.
However, tackling effectively these climate change-caused common environmental, social and economic risks through resilience building measures is possible only through close and innovative collaboration among the regional countries in developing, adopting and sharing workable solutions, the PM’s aide said here while addressing the inaugural session of the ‘Policy Action Dialogue on Tackling Climate Change Impacts.
The event was organised by the international development and civil society organisations organization in collaboration with federal organisations working on climate change, food security and water conservation.
While addressing participating policymakers, researchers, educationists, development sector experts, environmentalists, students and media at the event, Romina Khurshid Alam remarked that while the global temperatures continued to rise untamed, climate change was having severe and far-reaching consequences in the Hindu Kush Karakoram Himalaya (HKH) region, which spans across Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, China, Nepal, and Bhutan, where consequently glaciers, river water flows, energy supplies and agriculture were being adversely affected, placing the livelihoods of over 240 million people in the mountainous areas, and around 1.65 billion people downstream, at increasing risk.
There is a pressing need for the HKH regional countries to work together to manage shared water resources and address regional climate challenges by fostering cross-border cooperation on climate change mitigation and adaptation, as rivers and glaciers in the HKH region transcend national boundaries, PM’s climate aide emphasised.
Addressing the participants, Dr. Pema Gyamtsho, Director General of Kathmandu-based ICIMOD organisation, emphasised in his welcome remarks the vital importance of addressing the complex environmental challenges of the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region.
He said, “Pakistan, with 7,253 glaciers—the highest number outside the polar regions—is vulnerable to both floods and droughts. We must improve access to climate data for at-risk communities,” he stated, highlighting that although technologies exist, scaling them effectively remains a challenge.
The disaster risk reduction should focus beyond preparedness and prevention, urging investment in planning and implementation, Dr. Pema Gyamtsho suggested.
Lt. Gen. Inam Haider Malik, Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), also spoke at the event, emphasizing the alarming impact of warming on the glacial regions in the country.
He revealed that glacial melt in the Indus River basin was accelerating at a dangerous rate. He cited a 23.3% decrease in snow cover between November 2023 and April 2024 and an annual glacial melt rate of 3%, with an additional 16% mass loss over the past five years.
The NDMA chairman warned that while melting may provide temporary water surpluses, the long-term implications are dire and require urgent attention. He urged on the need for a regional approach to address the cryospheric crisis.
Special remarks delivered by Ms. Aisha Humera Chaudhry, Acting Secretary of MoCC&EC emphasized on the need for making the cryosphere an integral part of the climate discourse in Pakistan.
Ahmed Kamal, Chairman of the Federal Flood Commission and Neelofur Hafeez, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MoNFS&R) highlighted the importance of interagency cooperation to tackle the multifaceted challenges of climate change.

No member arrested within premises of Parliament: Tarar

ISLAMABAD, Sep 11 (APP):Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting, National Heritage, and Culture, Attaullah Tarar, said on Wednesday that CCTV footage confirmed that no member of Parliament was arrested within its premises.
Responding to a point raised by PTI’s Ali Muhammad Khan, he said, that all records related to the arrest were available in the Speaker’s chamber.
He said that the arrests took place outside the Parliament building.
He said that the entire house stood in support of the Speaker and said no one had asked him to refrain from engaging opposition members.
The minister invited opposition members to examine the footage present in the Speaker’s chamber and expressed disappointment that PTI members lacked the courage to listen and engage in meaningful dialogue.
 He reiterated that constructive conversation remains the key to resolving political issues.

CM reviews law, order in Punjab

LAHORE, Sep 11 (APP):Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz presided over a special meeting here on Wednesday to comprehensively review law and order situation in the province.
The CM said, “Protecting the life and property of people of Punjab is my foremost responsibility. We will do whatever is necessary to safeguard public life and property.”
The CM directed the authorities concerned to take indiscriminate action against criminals and anti-social elements. She said police should be able to take proactive action without waiting for a crime to be committed. She added attackers of police check posts should be given such a stern response that they do not dare to attack again.
CM Maryam Nawaz said police patrol should be arranged between police check-posts and directed the police officers to ensure foolproof security on Eid Milad-un-Nabi by visiting the scholars themselves.
She approved a proposal to increase number of provincial border posts, and directed the police authorities to immediately conduct special training of the police personnel posted at border posts. She also directed the relevant authorities to provide armored personnel carriers (APC), bullet-proof vehicles and jackets to police personnel. She highlighted strengthen and improve border security check posts besides restructuring and modernizing the Border Military Police.
The CM directed the relevant authorities to install body cameras on police force on duty, and intensify the campaign to eliminate illegal arms from the province. She was briefed by the authorities concerned that a strict ban has been imposed on the use of social media and cameras by on-duty police personnel.
The CM also approved a grant of Rs 1 billion for the police force in the meeting.
Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, Information & Culture Minister Azma Zahid Bukhari and MPA Sania Ashiq attended the meeting. Brigadier (retd) Babar Alauddin, Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, IG Police, Additional IG and other police officers were also present.
