PM’s climate change aide urges expansion of marine protected areas’ cover

ISLAMABAD, Sep 08 (APP):Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam on Sunday urged the Sindh and Balochistan governments to boost efforts to conserve marine ecosystems.
Following the recent declaration of Churna Island as a Marine Protected Area (MPA) by the Balochistan government, Romina Alam called for additional MPAs to be established to achieve the global target of protecting 30% of the ocean area by 2030.
Alam also praised the Balochistan government’s move for the protection of Churna Island, stating it a “positive step towards protecting marine resources and promoting environmentally sustainable development.”
Churna Island, known for its extensive coral habitats and biodiversity, is now Pakistan’s second MPA. The island is home to over 50 species of corals, 250 species of fish, and numerous invertebrates and vertebrates.
She offered full support to the Balochistan government in conserving marine biodiversity and safeguarding the island’s fragile ecosystem and diverse wildlife.
With over 5,000 MPAs globally, covering more than 8% of the ocean, the Coordinator stressed the importance of adopting ecosystem-based management approaches to minimise human impacts and ensure sustainable use of marine resources.
She highlighted the urgency of protecting marine ecosystems and wildlife from climate change and human activities, emphasizing the need for collective action and shared responsibility to address these environmental challenges.
Alam noted that this initiative will help regulate anthropogenic activities that harm the marine ecosystems of the country and protect the islands from threats like overfishing, pollution, and climate change impacts.
She also highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to advancing marine conservation efforts in collaboration with all relevant governmental and non-governmental stakeholders, particularly through mangrove restoration, which has seen a 300% increase since 1992 in the country.

Workshop on Space Law, Policy deliberated over space governance, legal frameworks

ISLAMABAD, Sep 08 (APP):The most anticipated two-day workshop on Space Law and Policy, hosted by the National Center of GIS and Space Applications (NCGSA) was held at the Institute of Space Technology (IST), marking a significant milestone in the discourse on space governance and legal frameworks in Pakistan.
The event brought together a diverse group of participants from academia, industry, and government institutions to engage in meaningful discussions on critical issues related to space law and policy.
The workshop featured insightful sessions led by renowned subject matter experts, including Chairman of NCGSA, Dr. Najam Abbas Naqvi who provided a comprehensive overview of the evolving landscape of space law and its importance for Pakistan’s space ambitions.
Senior Practice Manager for Space and Connectivity at Access Partnership in Singapore, Hamza Hameed shared his expertise on international space treaties and agreements, emphasizing their relevance to Pakistan’s national space
policy.
Throughout the two-day workshop, attendees engaged in comprehensive discussions on critical aspects of space law and policy, integral to advancing Pakistan’s position in the global space landscape.
The first day covered fundamental aspects of space law, including an introduction to international space treaties, space governance, and Pakistan’s space policy framework. Muhammad Arham Khan, Divisional Head of International Affairs at SUPARCO, shed light on the intricacies of space governance, while Hafiz General Manager of International Affairs at SUPARCO, Muhammad Naveed discussed the development and implementation of Pakistan’s National Space Policy.
The second day of the workshop focused on more specialized subjects, such as space diplomacy, liability and insurance in space activities, and the intersection of space and cybersecurity.
Dr. Maria Saifuddin Effendi from the National Defence University provided a deep insight into international space diplomacy, while Ms. Aisha Jagirani from APSCO highlighted the importance of regional and international cooperation in space.
Dr. Ammar Masood of Air University discussed the growing challenges of securing space assets in the digital age.
The workshop attracted participants from a wide array of organizations, including major universities, as well as industry leaders like SUPARCO, NESCOM, and Paksat International.
The presence of professionals from government departments, legal firms, and private space initiatives underscored the broad interest and commitment to advancing space law and policy in Pakistan.
The National Center of GIS and Space Applications, through its collaboration with national and international partners, continues to lead the charge in promoting space law initiatives within Pakistan.

PM Shehbaz vows to make Pakistan polio-free through collective efforts

ISLAMABAD, Sep 08 (APP): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday reaffirmed his commitment to making Pakistan polio-free, stating that with collective efforts, the disease will be completely eradicated and prevented from re-emerging in the future, ensuring a healthier future for the nation’s children.

Speaking at the ceremony after launching the 7-day polio eradication campaign, the prime minister stressed that a unified approach and collaborative efforts are crucial to successfully tackling the polio challenge and achieving a polio-free Pakistan.

At the ceremony, the prime minister extended a warm welcome to the attendees and expressed his appreciation for the outstanding collaboration and tireless efforts of federal and provincial government staff, foot soldiers, and security officers, who have worked together seamlessly to drive the polio eradication campaign forward.

The prime minister voiced his confidence that by working together with provincial chief ministers, chief secretaries, health ministers, and health secretaries, the government will successfully eliminate polio, paving the way for a polio-free future and eradicating this preventable disease in the years to come.

The prime minister assured that the polio eradication campaign is in capable hands, being led by expert teams, and expressed optimism that the federal government’s joint efforts with the provinces will ultimately lead to the disease’s eradication.

He further pledged that once polio is eliminated, the government will ensure it never returns, providing a safer future for generations to come.

ICT Police avert terror attack: Explosives and weapons seized in Sangjani

ISLAMABAD, Sep 08 (APP):Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police have successfully thwarted a potential terror attack by seizing a cache of dangerous weapons and explosives in the Sangjani area.
According to an ICT police spokesperson, heightened security alerts have been in place due to the ongoing threat of terrorism.
He said Search operations were being conducted in view of the threat of terrorism in the gatherings. Considering these circumstances additional personnel were deployed in different areas of the city, he added.
He said during a search operation in Sangjani, police discovered a suspicious bag. Upon examination, the bag was found to contain destructive explosives, hand grenades, detonators, and other explosive materials, he said.
He said the Bomb Disposal Squad of ICT Police was immediately called to the scene and successfully neutralized the explosives.
Following the operation, the area was cordoned off, and a high alert has been issued throughout the city, he said adding that increased checks are now being conducted at all city entrances and exits as part of the enhanced security protocol.
Police officials have urged citizens to cooperate with the increased security measures and to report any suspicious activity by calling 15. He said search operations are ongoing, and law enforcement agencies continue their efforts to ensure the safety and security of the city.

38th Khwarizmi International Award announced to acknowledge scientific achievements

ISLAMABAD, Sep 08 (APP):COMSTECH, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation, has announced the 38th Khwarizmi International Award (KIA) for 2024 to recognize and celebrate outstanding scientific achievements by researchers, inventors, and innovators from across the globe.
The awards have been announced by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, Iranian Research Organization for Science and Technology in partnership with the OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH).
The deadline for submission of entries is November 01, 2024, with the laureates being announced in January 2025.
This prestigious award offers global recognition for advancements in various fields, ranging from Aerospace and Agriculture to Nanotechnology, Information Technology, and Medical Sciences.

ISLAMABAD, Sep 8 (APP):Militarization has badly affected students’ education in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
According to a report on International Literacy Day, today, education of IIOJK children disrupted due to decades-long unresolved Kashmir dispute as the students are being harassed and humiliated by Indian troops instead of making it easy for them to achieve education.
It said the Modi regime has banned hundreds of schools run by Falah-e-Aam Trust in the occupied territory to keep Kashmiri youth away from quality education.
The Modi regime’s new education policy in IIOJK is a reflection of RSS ideology, the report said, adding how can Kashmiri students pay attention to education when they are witnessing killings of their dear ones by Indian troops on a daily basis?
The report deplored that Muslim students were forced to sing Hindu religious songs and do ‘Surya Namaskar’ in IIOJK schools.
It said off and on internet suspensions by Indian authorities have immensely hit education in the occupied territory and the Kashmiri students are harassed in mainland India and are even expelled from educational institutions.
The report appealed to the international community to pay attention to the plight of students in IIOJK so that they could also get education.

Man killed, 3 injured in Wana powerful explosion

ISLAMABAD, Sep 8 (APP): A man was killed on the spot while three others injured in an explosion in Karikot village bazaar adjacent to Wana in South Waziristan district on Sunday.
According to local Police, the blast was reported in Karikot village market in a vehicle that killed a man and injured three others, a private news channels reported.
The man killed in the explosion has been identified as Shamsuddin s/o Malik Jamil,  according to police.
The rescue officials reached the spot and rushed the injured and the body to the district headquarters hospital in Wana.

Police taking strict action against unfit PSVs

RAWALPINDI, Sep 08 (APP):Rawalpindi district police on the directives of City Police Officer (CPO) Rawalpindi Syed Khalid Hamdani are taking strict action against unfit Public Service Vehicles (PSVs).
According to a police spokesman, Police under special campaign launched in Rawalpindi district issued challan slips to 2786 PSVs and impounded 346 during 13 days.
He informed that during a special campaign launched against unfit vehicles, police challaned over 2786 and imposed fines amounting to over Rs 2.9 million on the rules violators.
He said that Police were taking action in accordance with the law against unfit PSVs, checking route permits and licenses of the drivers.
Legal action was taken against 185 drivers for driving vehicles without licenses, he added.
The licenses of 23 drivers found guilty of negligence were cancelled, he said adding, 26 cases were also registered against drivers and the owners of public service vehicles.
All possible steps were being taken to ensure safe travel on PSVs, he added.
He said that the travelling time of the vehicles was also being checked. Legal action would be ensured against those who endanger lives of the citizens, he said.
The spokesman said that action would also be taken against the PSVs owners and bus terminal managers found guilty of negligence.
The special squad of City Traffic Police is also ensuring checking of vehicles at bus terminals, he informed.
A special campaign was also launched for awareness of the citizens and drivers, he added.

8-member Kashmiri delegation departs for Geneva

ISLAMABAD, Sep 7 (APP):An eight-member Kashmiri delegation, representing voices from both sides of the Line of Control, has departed for Geneva to participate in the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
The delegates are the senior Hurriyat leaders including Ghulam Muhammad Safi, Convener of All Parties Hurriyat Conference Azad Jammu and Kashmir chapter, Altaf Hussain Wani of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and the Permanent Representative of the World Muslim Congress to the UN in Geneva, Sardar Amjad Yousaf Khan, Executive Director of the Kashmir Institute of International Relations (KIIR), Ms Shamim Shawl, Permanent Representative of the International Muslim Women’s Union, Syed Faiz Naqashbandi, senior APHC-AJK leader, Dr Shagufta Ashraf, Associate Professor at the University of Kotli, AJK, Dr Raja Sajjad Lateef, Executive Director of the Kashmir Peace Research Institute (KPRI) and Naila Altaf Kayani, a broadcaster, said a press release.
During their visit, they are scheduled to engage in critical discussions with key officials from the Human Rights Council, including Special Rapporteurs, diplomats, and representatives from international non-governmental organizations.
The primary objective of this visit is to highlight the ongoing human rights violations in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The delegation aims to inform the global community about the Indian government’s efforts to alter the demographics of the territory. They seek to expose the Indian government’s propaganda that claims peace, normalcy, and development have returned to Kashmir following the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A. The delegation intends to present the realities on the ground, including increasing militarization and human rights violations.
Additionally, they plan to address the Indian government’s attempts to conduct fraudulent elections, which are no substitute for a plebiscite as envisaged in the United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Alongside their official meetings, the Kashmiri delegation will host seminars and symposiums on the sidelines of the UNHRC session. These events aim to raise awareness about the urgent need for a resolution to the lingering Kashmir dispute and to expose what they describe as India’s detrimental actions in the occupied territory.

RDA accelerates operation against illegal construction, encroachments

RAWALPINDI, Sep 08 (APP):Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has accelerated its ongoing operation against illegal construction and encroachments, said RDA spokesman here on Sunday.
He informed that the authority taking a significant step to curb illegal construction and enhancing the monitoring of private housing schemes had appointed two new superintendents and four surveyors.
The appointments are part of the RDA’s ongoing efforts to ensure strict compliance with building regulations and to protect the urban environment.
The newly appointed officials would play a critical role for field surveillance, ensuring that all construction activities within the RDA’s jurisdiction adhere to approved plans and legal requirements.
The two new superintendents, known for their extensive experience in urban development, would lead the teams responsible for overseeing field operations.
Their expertise would be crucial in identifying and taking immediate action against unauthorised construction activities, the spokesman said.
He said that the four surveyors, equipped with modern tools and techniques, were conducting regular inspections of private housing schemes and their task would be to ensure that these schemes comply with the RDA’s regulations, helping to prevent any illegal expansions or alterations that could compromise the city’s infrastructure and planning.
The spokesman said, by enhancing the field surveillance capabilities, the Authority aims to provide a safer and more regulated environment for the residents of our city.
He informed that RDA had urged all the developers and residents to cooperate with RDA officials and ensure that all construction activities are conducted within the legal framework.
The Authority would continue to take all necessary measures to prevent illegal construction practices, he added.
The spokesman further informed that the enforcement squad of RDA taking action in accordance with the law was also removing encroachments from different areas.
In an operation, encroachments were removed from Dhamyal, Kalyal Road, Girja Road and other areas, he informed.
He said, RDA had taken solid steps to clear encroachments from city areas on the special directives of the Chief Minister Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
A special enforcement squad was formed which was conducting raids and removing encroachments in different areas, the spokesperson informed.
On the special instructions of the Director General, RDA, Kinza Murtaza, the Enforcement Squad members were provided new uniform, equipment and machinery.
The DG had directed the authorities concerned to take strict action against encroachments in all city areas including the banks of nullahs.
RDA had urged the citizens to remove encroachments on their own to avoid legal action, he added.
