The JDS Program is part of Japan’s commitment to strengthen the administrative capacities of the government of Pakistan which was initiated in 2018. The program offers highly capable Pakistani government officers the opportunity to pursue Master’s and Ph.D. degrees at leading Japanese universities. These officers are selected from those involved in planning and implementing social and economic development policies.
Through the JDS Program JICA has so far sent over hundred government officers to Japan, out of which nearly 70 scholars have successfully completed their studies and returned to Pakistan, contributing their enhanced knowledge and skills to the country’s development. The focus areas of study under this program include public administration and finance (Disciplines of Public Policy and Development Studies), Industrial Promotion and Investment Climate, Energy Policy and Response to Climate Change and Agribusiness and Food Security.
On this occasion, Ambassador AKAMATSU stated, “The Government of Japan fully understands the importance of social and human capital development in Pakistan and believes among the key enablers is a responsive and accountable public administration. Building the capacity of young outstanding civil servants in various technical areas is thus imperative in strengthening public administration that can effectively address the multi-dimensional development challenges in this country.”
Naoaki MIYATA, added, “This program will make a significant contribution to human resource development in Pakistan. JDS fellows will acquire advanced knowledge and skills which will enhance their capacities in policy planning and implementation. We believe these individuals will play pivotal leadership roles within the Government of Pakistan, contributing to national development and the well-being of the people. Moreover, the JDS Program is a testament to the enduring partnership and friendship between Japan and Pakistan.”

ISLAMABAD, July 15 (APP):Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan on Tuesday reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering solidarity with Turkiye, praising the Turkish people’s courage and resilience during the failed coup attempt of July 15, 2016 – a defining moment he described as a “beacon of democratic will and national unity.”
Speaking at a ceremony hosted by the Turkish Embassy here to mark Turkiye’s Democracy and National Unity Day, the minister paid tribute to the martyrs who laid down their lives to defend their country’s democratic foundations.
“This day is not only about remembering a dark chapter,” Aleem Khan said, “but about celebrating the spirit of a nation that rose above adversity to protect its democracy, its sovereignty, and its constitution.”
The event, attended by Turkish Ambassador Dr. Irfan Neziroglu, diplomats, senior Pakistani officials, and civil society representatives, was marked by a profound expression of brotherhood between Pakistan and Turkiye.

Aleem Khan lauded the Turkish nation’s collective defiance during the coup attempt, which he said reflected the deep commitment of the people, inspired by the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “They did not succumb to fear. Instead, they rose ‘united’ to safeguard their country’s future,” he remarked.
“Pakistan observed with deep admiration the solidarity and sacrifice of the Turkish people. Their courage echoes across borders, and their determination serves as a reminder of what nations can achieve when they stand together,” he added.
Emphasizing the enduring nature of Pakistan-Turkiye ties, the minister said the two countries are “more than allies – we are brothers, connected by history, culture, and common dreams.” He recalled feeling emotionally moved each time he visited Turkiye and saw the flags of both nations flying side by side.
Aleem Khan also reiterated Pakistan’s continued support for Turkiye’s regional and global stances on peace, counterterrorism, and national security, adding, “Turkiye holds a place in my heart no less than my own homeland.”
In closing, he emphasized that both nations must build on this shared history and deepen their partnership for a peaceful and prosperous future.

China reports surge in foreign tourists as summer vacation begins

BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua/APP): China is experiencing a surge in foreign tourist arrivals as the summer vacation season kicks off, with increasing numbers of international travelers drawn to the country’s unique blend of ancient culture and modern vitality.

Thomas Watts, a short video creator from the United States, said he invited friends to Chongqing this summer after seeing numerous online posts highlighting the city’s steep hills and bold flavors.

“It reminds me of San Francisco, but with spicier food and a spectacular neon-lit skyline. I came to experience it and film it myself,” he said.

He is not alone in choosing China as a summer destination. Kittiphume Pannil, a university student from Thailand, arrived in China for the first time last week and plans to spend his summer break on an exchange program at a local university in Chongqing.

“When I saw Chongqing from the plane, it looked like a city of dazzling lights and towering skyscrapers, like something straight out of the future,” Pannil said.

Official data showed that in the first half of 2025, Chongqing’s border checkpoints handled more than 1.14 million inbound and outbound travelers, a 35 percent year-on-year increase. Among them, over 330,000 were foreign nationals, setting a new record for the city.

The country’s capital is also drawing a growing number of international visitors. According to official data, Beijing’s ports of entry handled over 640,000 inbound and outbound travelers from July 1 to 10, including 171,000 foreign tourists, marking a 22.1 percent year-on-year increase.

Among the newcomers is Robert Alex Barbender, a traveler from the Netherlands. “A friend told me Beijing is beautiful, and now with the visa-free policy, I thought why not come and have a look?” he said.

“Honestly, it feels like I’ve stepped into a video game, everything is busy and crowded, but still runs in perfect order,” he added.

Other major cities are also welcoming record numbers of international visitors. According to official data, a total of 2.56 million foreign travelers entered China through Shanghai’s Pudong and Hongqiao international airports in the first half of this year, marking a 44.7 percent year-on-year increase.

Meanwhile, Xi’an, a cultural hub known for its Terracotta Warriors, has welcomed more than 135,000 foreign visitors this year, a 124 percent jump from the same period last year. Notably, over 100,000 of them arrived under visa exemption policies, including unilateral and mutual visa-free entry as well as the visa-free transit policy, marking a staggering 290 percent surge compared to 2024.

To meet the growing demand, immigration authorities at major border checkpoints have introduced a range of measures to reduce waiting times and improve the travel experience.

Tourism destinations across the country are also tailoring experiences for international visitors. In Beijing, the Palace Museum offers foreign-language tours focusing on the architectural significance of the landmark spots. In Xi’an, tourists can immerse themselves in China’s rich history by dressing in traditional Tang Dynasty costumes.

This significant rise in inbound tourism this summer is no coincidence. Summer is traditionally a major vacation season for travelers from Europe, North America and Southeast Asia, leading many to choose China as their preferred destination during these months.

The surge has also been driven by China’s continued easing of entry policies for foreign visitors. As of now, China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy applies to 55 countries, while nationals from 47 countries are eligible for unilateral visa-free entry.

Nissan to end vehicle production at Oppama plant by end of FY 2027

TOKYO, Jul 15 (Kyodo/APP): Nissan Motor Co. said Tuesday that it will end vehicle production at its flagship Oppama plant in Kanagawa Prefecture near Tokyo by the end of fiscal 2027, transferring the operation to a factory in southwestern Japan, as part of restructuring efforts.

The struggling automaker will consolidate the production of current models and those set for production at the Oppama plant at its subsidiary, Nissan Motor Kyushu Co.

“Nissan made a tough but necessary decision…but I believe it’s a vital step toward overcoming our current challenges and building a sustainable future,” Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa said in a statement.

The company is also slated to shutter the Shonan plant of its unit, Nissan Shatai Co., located in Hiratsuka, also in Kanagawa, but does not plan on closing or integrating any other domestic locations, Espinosa said during a press conference.

Nissan has said it aims to reduce its global production capacity from 3.5 million units excluding China to 2.5 million units and cut 20,000 jobs globally. The automaker logged a net loss of 670.90 billion yen ($4.5 billion) for fiscal 2024, hit by poor sales in the United States and China.

To achieve its restructuring targets, Nissan is also considering reducing the number of its production sites from 17 to 10 at home and abroad by fiscal 2027.

The decision to cease vehicle production does not affect other facilities and functions around the Oppama plant, including the Nissan research center, crash test facility, wharf and test course, according to the automaker.

The company said it will hold talks with its labor union about the future of the plant’s workers, currently totaling around 2,400, beyond the end of fiscal 2027.

Nissan is also in negotiations with several partners about how to utilize the factory in the future, according to Espinosa.

The Oppama plant in Yokosuka started operations in 1961 and is home to the world’s first mass-produced electric vehicle Leaf, produced since 2010. It currently produces the Note compact car.

ISLAMABAD, Jul 15 (APP):The British Council has announced a free three-day online professional development conference for English language teachers across South Asia, set to take place from 17 to 19 July 2025. The South Asia TeachingEnglish Online Conference 2025 invites primary and secondary school educators to engage in a rich and dynamic learning experience focused on current trends and future directions in English language teaching.
Centred around the theme “Supporting Teachers’ Professional Development,” the event will feature nine expert-led sessions, including three panel discussions. The sessions are designed to equip teachers with practical strategies and deeper understanding of three core themes: inclusive education, integration of 21st-century skills, and the transformative use of digital technology and artificial intelligence in English classrooms.
The conference opens with a focus on inclusive practices, guiding teachers on how to create classrooms where every learner—regardless of background or ability—feels supported and valued. Sessions will offer actionable insights on designing equitable learning environments and teaching strategies that cater to diverse needs.
The second theme addresses the incorporation of 21st-century skills into language education, encouraging teachers to nurture students’ critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and global citizenship. These skills, considered essential for success in an increasingly complex and interconnected world, will be explored through real classroom examples and regional best practices.
The third and final theme looks at the role of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in enhancing both teaching and learning. With tools ranging from AI-assisted lesson planning to interactive online learning environments, the conference aims to give teachers a toolkit of strategies to meaningfully engage their students using technology. The sessions will also demystify the role of AI in education and demonstrate how it can be used inclusively and responsibly.
Speakers at the conference include renowned education experts from Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the UK, and Greece. With backgrounds ranging from grassroots teaching to international consultancy, they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience grounded in local contexts. Notable names include Amena Ahmed (Pakistan), who leads textbook reform and inclusive learning initiatives; Nahid Ferdous Bhuiyan (Bangladesh), a leading TESOL trainer and AI integration specialist; and Dr. Bimali Indrarathne (Sri Lanka), a global authority on dyslexia and inclusive education.
British Council South Asia Director of English and School Education, Sarah Rogerson, said the event is timely and critical for teachers navigating new challenges in education. “As we navigate an educational landscape transformed by technology and diversity, our focus remains clear: every teacher must feel equipped to make English learning inclusive, meaningful, and future-ready. True innovation comes not from tools alone, but from empathy, reflection, and a commitment to reaching every learner,” she said.
British Council Pakistan Country Director James Hampson added that the conference offers teachers a rare opportunity to connect with global expertise and stay at the forefront of change. “We’re helping teachers of English from Pakistan and across South Asia by connecting them to world-class expertise. This Conference will introduce new ideas, new technologies, and new skills which will benefit millions of students they teach today and into the future.”
Educators attending the conference will also receive e-certificates for each session. The event not only aims to build teachers’ knowledge and capacity but also foster regional collaboration and inspire a shared vision for the future of English language teaching.
