Pakistan set to gain $200 million from tuna industry overhaul, announces Maritime Minister

0
ISLAMABAD, Jul 05 (APP):Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has announced that Pakistan’s tuna sector is set for a $200 million boost following global quota allocations and regulatory reforms.
For the first time, Pakistan has secured a tuna fishing quota of 25,000 metric tons from the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), comprising 15,000 tons of Yellowfin Tuna and 10,000 tons of Skipjack Tuna, according to an official press release. These quotas are aligned with climate-conscious fisheries management principles aimed at protecting marine biodiversity and reducing pressure on ocean ecosystems.
“This is a landmark achievement that promises significant foreign exchange earnings,” the Minister said. “With international prices for these tuna species ranging between $5 and $7 per kilogram, and potentially higher with value-added processing, the economic potential is enormous.”
Calling the development “a turning point for Pakistan’s tuna sector,”Junaid Anwar Chaudhry noted that although the country currently catches more than 45,000 metric tons of tuna each year, much of this high-value resource has been escaping the formal economy due to unregulated operations.
To capture the full economic value of the resource, the Minister highlighted “a series of reforms have been launched”, including the introduction of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy, aimed at unifying fragmented regulatory frameworks while promoting environmentally sound and revenue-generating fishing techniques.
“This policy framework supports Pakistan’s obligations under international climate and marine conservation agreements”, the Federal Minister stated.
The Minister highlighted a major milestone for Pakistan, announcing that for the first time in the 28-year history of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), a senior official from Pakistan’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs has been elected as Chair of its Standing Committee on Administration and Finance, a significant step in strengthening Pakistan’s role in global tuna governance.
The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) is an intergovernmental body comprising 30 member countries, established under the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Its mandate is to manage tuna and related species in the Indian Ocean by promoting sustainable use through scientific research, quota distribution, and regulatory frameworks.
As part of broader adaptation efforts, the Minister said the destructive fishing methods such as gillnetting and trawling are being phased out replacing them with more selective and environmentally friendly longlining techniques.
“This transition reduces bycatch and supports ocean health in the face of climate-driven stressors such as warming waters and changing migration patterns”, he added.
The FAO has backed this initiative by providing 10 longline fishing kits free of charge for demonstration purposes to local fishing communities. This transition is expected to increase product value from an average of $2 to $8 per kilogram, the Minister noted.
The Minister stated that further reforms encompassed the revision of certification and testing fees for seafood exports, resulting in a revenue increase from PKR 48 million to PKR 250 million. Additionally, infrastructure initiatives have been launched, including the revitalization of Korangi Fisheries Harbor with the construction of a new auction hall and floating jetty, aimed at enhancing tuna landings and boosting exports, particularly to the European Union.
He stated that Pakistan’s tuna sector now stands at the threshold of a major economic shift. With quotas secured, regulatory reforms underway, and international cooperation growing, the country is poised to become a key player in the global tuna trade, ushering in a new era of sustainable growth and foreign exchange generation for the fisheries sector.

Islamabad Wildlife Board files legal complaint over illegal deer slaughter in Margalla Hills

0
ISLAMABAD, Jul 05 (APP):The Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) has filed a formal complaint at the relevant police station seeking legal action against individuals involved in the reported slaughter of a barking deer in Margalla Hills National Park—an act that violates Pakistan’s wildlife protection laws.
According to an IWMB spokesperson, the complaint names Bashir Abbasi, Zain Abbasi, and unidentified individuals as accused in the case. The Board is pursuing charges under the Islamabad Nature Conservation and Wildlife Management Act, 2024, specifically sections 12.4(a) and 16.1(a), which prohibit the harming or killing of protected wildlife.
“The barking deer is listed as a protected species under Schedule I of the Act,” the spokesperson told APP. “Its killing is a serious offense, and we are committed to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.”
Under the law, he said violations of these provisions carry a maximum penalty of Rs 1 million in fines and up to one year in imprisonment. The complaint further invokes Section 23 of the Act, which states that even a deceased wild animal found in a protected area is considered the property of the federal government.
The move comes a day after a video surfaced online showing the deer being slaughtered in the national park, sparking public outrage and prompting a swift response from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination. Federal Minister Dr. Musadik Malik condemned the incident and ordered an immediate inquiry.
Margalla Hills National Park is one of Pakistan’s most biodiverse protected areas, home to several endangered and native species. Officials and environmentalists alike have called for stricter enforcement to prevent such incidents in the future.
Legal proceedings are now underway, and authorities say further action will depend on the outcome of the investigation.

Minister orders probe into deer killing in Margalla Hills

ISLAMABAD, Jul 05 (APP):Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, has strongly condemned the reported killing of a deer in the Margalla Hills National Park after a disturbing video of the incident surfaced on social media, sparking public outrage.
Terming the act “cruel” and “unacceptable,” the minister ordered an immediate inquiry and directed relevant authorities to submit a report on the incident without delay. “Harming wildlife in protected areas is a violation of conservation laws and will not be tolerated,” Dr. Malik said in a statement issued by the ministry on Saturday.
The Margalla Hills, part of the Himalayan foothills and home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, are designated as a protected national park under Pakistani law.
Hunting or harming wildlife in the area is strictly prohibited under the Islamabad Wildlife (Protection, Preservation, Conservation and Management) Ordinance, 1979.
The Margalla Hills National Park spans more than 17,000 hectares and supports species such as barking deer, leopards, wild boars, and a variety of birds and reptiles.
Wildlife experts warn that repeated violations could endanger the fragile ecosystem and set back conservation efforts.
