Pakistan invites SCO member, observer states to partner in joint production of films
CHONGQING, July 4 (APP): Pakistan strongly believes in regional partnerships and multilateral co-productions and invites Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member and observer states to explore opportunities for joint ventures, shared storytelling, and cross-border cinematic initiatives.
“In the true spirit of “Sharing and Win-Win,” let us unite our strengths and film expertise and tell the stories of our people together to the world,” Executive Director General, Directorate of Electronic Media Publications, Samina Farzeen said on Friday.
Addressing participants at Film Cooperation Forum “Benefit Together and Thrive Together – Cinematic Expression of the SCO Spirit” on sidelines of SCO Film Festival 2025, she said that Pakistan offers a visually rich and culturally diverse landscape, beautifully blending a South Asian and Central Asian cultural architecture and influences, ideal for co-productions and cinematic storytelling among SCO countries.
This also offers an attractive and untapped destination for international shootings and collaborative projects, she added.
The executive director general informed that Pakistan has been attending regional and international film festivals specially in China such as Silk Road International Film Festival and the Hainan International Film Festival and in Belarus Film Festival.
“This year, we are participating in SCO film festival with new films and renewed enthusiasm, eager to share Pakistan’s cinematic narrative and learn from the creative excellence of fellow SCO member states.
Talking about Pakistani delegation comprising renowned film producers and directors, distributors, writers and actors, she said that Pakistani films in this Festival are all from diverse geners such as horror, action, social drama, entertainment, comedy, animations.
About the SCO Film Festival, she opined that it is more than just a cultural celebration. This festival is a vision and a collective effort to enrich our regional narrative, foster people-to-people ties, and promote harmony through cinema.
In keeping with this year’s theme of “Sharing and Win-Win”, Pakistan fully supports this noble endeavor and proudly reaffirms its commitment to enhancing cultural cooperation among SCO states and is endeavoring to collaborate with all SCO members in the cinema and film, she added.
Samina Farzeen said that Pakistan and China have signed two landmark Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in the media and cultural sectors, which include a Film Co-Production Agreement and a TV also a Television Co production agreement which lays the foundation for joint film projects, technical cooperation, and the screening of cinematic content across both countries.
Under these MOUs meetings and collaborations between Chinese and Pakistani production houses are being arranged at the state level to facilitate joint-productions agreements and reciprocal screening of films in both the countries, she added.
Pakistan, she said, is currently pursuing collaborations with fellow SCO member states such as Uzbekistan, Iran, Russia, and Belarus for the joint production of films, dramas, documentaries and diverse audiovisual content.
“We also look forward to expanding these collaborative efforts with other SCO member and observer states, in the spirit of mutual creativity and cultural exchange,” she added.
Highlighting Pakistan’s film industry, she said it is undergoing a remarkable revival. Special focus is being given to infusing new film technologies and special effects in the new productions in line with contemporary global standards. Some of the recent productions in Pakistani cinemas have been acclaimed internationally including films like Glassworker, Joyland and The Legend of Maula Jutt & Nayab.
She informed that Pakistan’s domestic box office has seen some steady growth. In 2018 alone, local films earned over PKR 2.6 billion from just 21 releases. And in 2022, Pakistan made history with “The Legend of Maula Jatt”, which earned over Rs. 4 billion worldwide, setting a new benchmark for Pakistani cinema.
In her speech, Samina Farzeen also expressed deepest appreciation to the SCO, China Film Administration, and the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government for hosting remarkable film festival highlighting the power of storytelling combined with new technologies to transcend borders and build strong bridges of love and understanding.

Beijing joins hands with global partners to build digital-friendly city
BEIJING, July 4 (APP): “The question is not whether global digital transformation will continue, but whether we can ensure its benefits are inclusive, equitable, and accessible to all,” UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in China, James George, delivered opening remarks at the Global Digital Economy Conference 2025 held in Beijing.
The representative noted that UNDP together with our sister UN agencies and development partners, we have long worked at the intersection of digital innovation and sustainable development-supporting efforts ranging from inclusive digital policies to digital public infrastructure, from smart city diagnostics to responsible data governance.
“Today, I am proud to announce that we will officially sign the UNDP Demonstration Project on Digital-Friendly and Digital Economy for Sustainable Development in Beijing, together with our project partners: Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology, the People’s Government of Daxing District, and the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (CICETE),” George added. “Just as importantly, it will contribute to global knowledge-sharing-connecting local practice with international dialogue on what works and lessons learned.”
Digital Silk Road is connecting the world. China is becoming increasingly connected with other countries, especially the countries along the Belt and Road Initiative, in the field of digital economy. “The digital economy is becoming an important tool for realizing the national sovereign development strategy. In order to fully unleash the potential of the digital economy, Nicaragua has formulated and implemented the National Digital Transformation Plan, which includes the active participation of Chinese companies and uses Chinese technology to enhance our connectivity, digital services, technological innovation and talent training capabilities,” noted Ramio Jose Cruz Flores, Nicaraguan ambassador to China, who is full of confidence in the prospects for digital cooperation between the two countries.
It is reported that the China-Nicaragua Free Trade Agreement, which will officially take effect on January 1, 2024, has opened up new space for the two countries in e-commerce and digital services. Encouraging more Nicaraguan students to come to China to study cutting-edge technologies such as AI, cloud computing, and big data is also in Nicaragua’s national strategic plan, CEN reported.
“As artificial intelligence has developed to this day, the potential of scenarios and data resources it brings to various fields of the digital economy is unlimited,” said Yu Xiaohui, President of China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT). “The export or open source of digital technology to achieve inclusive development is our vital foundation. We have established the BRICS Artificial Intelligence Development and Cooperation Center to fully promote the export of Chinese technology as well as combine it with global development needs. Soon, we are going to release a development index to boost the specific application of AI technology in various countries and regions.”
Beijing has taken the lead in exploring international cooperation in the digital economy at the city level by establishing digital economy partnerships with 27 cities worldwide, including but not limited to Abu Dhabi, Busan, Colombo, London, Copenhagen, San Francisco, Johannesburg. In 2024, the city’s digital economy growth value has exceeded 2.2 trillion yuan, with more than 2,400 artificial intelligence companies, and the core industry revenue has exceeded 300 billion yuan.

ISLAMABAD, Jul 4 (APP): Khalid Taimur Akram, Executive Director of the Pakistan Research Center for a Community with Shared Future (PRCCSF), received the “Best Paper Presentation Award”at the 4th Tsinghua Area Studies Forum, held from July 2 to 4 at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.
About 250 Scholars/ Experts from 100 countries participated in the three-day conference, which was arranged by Institute of International and Area Studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing, which is one of the top universities in the world.
This event is one of the biggest gathering of International Relations Experts in the world. Akram’s presentation, titled “Harnessing the Digital Economy for Inclusive Growth in the Global South,” was selected as the best among 250 submissions from 100 countries.
The three-day conference, themed “Beyond Regions: Emerging Issues for the Global South,” featured diverse discussions on critical global challenges. On July 4, 2025, Akram moderated and spoke in a panel titled “Economic Inequality and Governance,” part of the broader track on “Economic Development: New Pathways and Future Prospects for the Global South.” His contributions provided valuable insights into inclusive growth, digital economies, and legal frameworks in the Global South.
In his award-winning presentation, Akram emphasized the digital economy’s potential to drive inclusive growth in the Global South. He highlighted the necessity of combining technological advancements with robust policy, infrastructure, and human capital development.
The presentation underscored key lessons from digital business case studies, advocating for strategic investments, human capital growth, and innovation-supportive regulations, alongside consumer protection. It also addressed concerns like the digital divide and the need for collaborative efforts to ensure equitable distribution of digitalization’s benefits.
The 4th Tsinghua Area Studies Forum was structured into several thematic panels, each designed to address distinct yet interconnected facets of the Global South.
The first thematic panel explored the two-way influence between Global South countries and the evolution of the world order. Sessions delved into geopolitical conflicts and regional integration and cooperation.
The second panel covered trade, investment, global value chains, transformation of the informal economy, sustainable development, industrial policy, and economic growth.
Likewise third panel discussions included social inequality and welfare, transformations in health governance and digital sovereignty, comparative perspectives on development and governance, and central-local coordination in local governance.
The fourth panel explored historical and cultural memory in nation-building, public space, environmental and material history, and local perspectives on theoretical construction and historical writing in the context of global history. It also addressed religion, cultural identity, and globalization.
Fifth panel focused on politics, contestation, and cooperation related to resources in the Global South. Topics included the green energy transition, geopolitical strategies, interregional cooperation in resource governance, political logic, strategic bargaining, and global cooperation on climate change.
Panel six examined new trends in migration, cultural diversity, social integration, and migration-related security challenges, using cases from the Global South.
