NAB initiates disbursement of Rs 3.20b among victims of Eden Housing Scam

LAHORE, Jul 17 (APP):National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore has initiated the disbursement of Rs 3.20 billion among Eden Housing Scam victims.
The cheque distribution ceremony held at NAB Lahore was graced by NAB Chairman Lt. Gen. (R) Nazir Ahmad. The event was conducted under the supervision of NAB DG Ghulam Safdar Shah, said a press release issued here on Thursday.
The NAB chairman highlighted that the total claims submitted by 11,880 victims against Eden administration amounted to Rs 13 billion, however, NAB succeeded in  plea bargain of Rs 16 billion, exceeding the total claimed amount by 23%, thereby ensuring enhanced compensation for all the affectees.
He informed that NAB Lahore had, so far, recovered Rs 11.8 billion from Eden authorities, out of which Rs 8.6 billion had already been disbursed among the victims.
He said, “With the commencement of the fifth installment of Rs 3.2 billion, the bureau continues its efforts to recover the remaining Rs. 4.2 billion, for which the performance of NAB Lahore merits recognition and appreciation.”
He further announced that going forward, victims would no longer be required to visit NAB offices to receive their compensation, instead the payments would be transferred directly into their bank accounts through a streamlined digital system.
The chairman appreciated NAB Lahore and investigation teams decisively working against illegal housing schemes and said that since its establishment, the bureau had achieved record recoveries totaling to Rs 236 billion, with Rs 233 billion disbursed to approximately 94,000 affectees.
While outlining NAB’s broader accountability agenda, the chairman revealed that, in collaboration with provincial governments, comprehensive reforms in Real Estate sector were currently being implemented.
He also disclosed NAB’s plan to launch a comprehensive nationwide crackdown against fraudulent allotments of public land, again in coordination with provincial governments.
NAB Lahore DG  Ghulam Safdar Shah, reiterated that since inception, NAB Lahore had recovered a total of Rs 236 billion, including Rs 45.5 billion through direct recoveries, Rs 177 billion indirectly, Rs 12 billion through settlements, and Rs 1 billion in court-imposed fines.
He said that NAB Lahore had filed 1,381 References before Accountability Courts from which 1,265 References had been decided.
The DG further elaborated on key reforms introduced during the tenure of chairman NAB which include monthly public hearings (Khuli Katcheri), establishment of Business and Overseas facilitation desks in all regions of NAB, adoption of the term “defendant” during inquiries, ensuring dignity until proven guilty, confidentiality of suspects’ identities during investigation, revisions to NAB’s auction policy, establishment of a dedicated Land Directorate at NAB Headquarters, implementation of the E-Office system for enhanced operational efficiency, integration of Artificial Intelligence in investigative processes, development of comprehensive Anti-Money Laundering guidelines, a wide array of employee welfare and institutional capacity-building measures.
While concluding the ceremony, the NAB chairman awarded certificates of appreciation to the members of the Combined Investigation Team (CIT) in recognition of their exemplary efforts in successfully investigating and resolving the complex Eden Housing Scam.

CCD arrests five wanted fugitives from UAE

LAHORE, Jul 17 (APP):The Crime Control Department (CCD), Punjab has made a significant breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown against absconding criminals residing abroad, arresting five fugitives from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
According to a spokesperson for the department, the arrests were made by the CCD’s Special Operations Cell during a successful operation conducted in coordination with UAE authorities. The arrested individuals were wanted in connection with serious criminal offences, including multiple murder and financial fraud cases.
The suspects are currently being brought to Pakistan in CCD custody and are expected to arrive in Lahore later today.
Among the apprehended is Muhammad Jameel, wanted by Sialkot Police in a murder case. Gulbaz Khan, sought by Narowal Police in a separate homicide investigation and Muhammad Ilyas, accused of murder in Faisalabad, have also been extradited.
The operation also resulted in the arrest of two suspects involved in white-collar crime. Naveed Dar, wanted by Lahore Police in a financial fraud case, and Shehzam Khurshid, accused of a similar offence in Faisalabad, are also among those brought back.
A CCD spokesperson reiterated the department’s firm resolve to bring fugitives to justice, stating, “Those who commit crimes in Pakistan and flee abroad to avoid legal proceedings will be pursued relentlessly and brought back through legal channels. There is zero tolerance for criminals operating or hiding overseas.”

Saudi twins Yara, Lara successfully separated in surgery, marking 65th global milestone for Kingdom’s medical team

RIYADH, July 18 (APP): Saudi conjoined twins Yara and Lara were successfully separated during a complex surgical procedure conducted on Thursday at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh in a major medical milestone.

According to the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), Dr Abdullah Al Rabeeah, General Supervisor of KSrelief and head of the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme, confirmed the success of the operation, which involved a 38-member team of highly specialized professionals. The nine-stage procedure was carried out at King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital under the Ministry of National Guard.

Dr Al Rabeeah extended his deep gratitude to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz for their continued support, which he said has been critical to the program’s global humanitarian impact.

“Their unwavering backing has enabled Saudi Arabia to deliver world-class specialized care, improving lives and demonstrating the Kingdom’s commitment to humanitarian service,” Al Rabeeah remarked.

The twins, born on November 5, 2024, were conjoined in the lower abdomen and pelvis, sharing parts of the lower colon, rectum, urinary and reproductive systems, and pelvic bone. Despite the complexity, the medical team determined after extensive assessment that separation was feasible.

The operation marked the 65th successful separation under the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme, which has reviewed 150 cases from 27 countries over 35 years. Yara and Lara are also the 16th pair of Saudi twins to be successfully separated.

Dr Al Rabeeah praised his colleagues for their dedication, saying their collective effort reflects the Kingdom’s noble values and leadership in global medical and humanitarian work.

The twins are currently under post-operative care, with doctors optimistic about their recovery.

Joint meeting held to tackle human trafficking, child labour

HYDERABAD, Jul 17 (APP):A joint session of the District Anti-Human Trafficking and Anti-Bonded Labour Monitoring and Implementation Committee, the District Vigilance Committee, and the District Coordination Committee for Child Protection was held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Additional Deputy Commissioner-II (ADC) Hyderabad Saba Kalwar.
Representatives from various government departments, human rights organizations, labor unions and other relevant institutions participated in the meeting.
The meeting discussed on pressing issues including bonded labour, child labour, underage marriages and human trafficking in detail. Addressing the participants, ADC-II Saba Kalwar reiterated the government of sindh’s commitment to eradicating forced labour, child exploitation and early marriages.
She emphasized the need for all relevant departments to understand their responsibilities and ensure practical and timely actions. In light of the extreme heat, she directed the health department to immediately set up medical camps at brick kilns to protect kiln workers and their children from skin diseases.
Furthermore, she directed concerned officers to regularly submit performance reports and working papers, and to take effective measures to address public grievances.

Coordination meeting for UNFPA Project held in Kohat

The meeting focused on strengthening the referral pathway under the UNFPA project being implemented by SRSP.
Representatives from various line departments attended the meeting, engaging in detailed discussions on project activities, challenges and future plans.

All-Hazard training for Rapid Response Teams concluded in KP

PESHAWAR, Jul 17 (APP):The Directorate General Health Services Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (DGHS KP) in collaboration with National Institute of Health (NIH) Islamabad has successfully concluded a three-day All-Hazard Training for Rapid Response Team (RRT) core and surge members.
The primary objective of the training was to enhance the capacity of RRT members to respond swiftly, effectively and in a coordinated manner during any public health emergency or disaster.
Participants were trained through internationally-aligned modules and hands-on drills ensuring both theoretical knowledge and practical skills were effectively imparted.
Dr. Arman Hakim, focal person for training, acknowledged the enthusiastic participation of the teams and stated: “The Rapid Response Team is an integrated, multi-sectoral force playing a vital role in tackling emergencies and outbreaks in KP. Trainings like this not only boost operational readiness but would also strengthen inter-agency coordination.”
The initiative reflects KP Health Department’s commitment to strengthening emergency preparedness and ensuring timely, coordinated and efficient responses to health threats across the province.

Rawalpindi Admin still on high alert as water level in Nullah Leh recedes

RAWALPINDI, Jul 17 (APP):As the water level in Nullah Leh receded Thursday evening after crossing dangerous level earlier in the day, all the operational wings of Rawalpindi administration were still on high alert to cope with any emergency situation in the wake of ongoing spell of torrential rain.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast persistent rainspells till August 31.
Heavy rain poured over the twin cities for more than 18 hours flooding the low-lying areas of the garrison city, prompting the district administration to launch a rescue and evacuation operation in the affected localities since early morning.
The administration sounded sirens to warn residents about the flooding caused by the heavy rain.
The water level in Nullah Leh, which currently measured at around 5 feet, had risen to over 21 feet at Katarian and 20 feet at Gawalmandi around 10 a.m. as per the National Forecasting Centre, Islamabad, inundating the localities on its both sides.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, 253 mm of rain was recorded at Kachhari (Chaklala), 248 mm at Gawalmandi, 235 mm at Katarian, 175 mm at Shamsabad in Rawalpindi, and 157 mm at Saidpur, 184 mm at Golra, 198 mm at Bokra, and 175 mm at PMD in Islamabad.
The district government had clamped an emergency and alerted all its departments concerned to meet with any eventuality following the heavy rainfall.
The deputy commissioner declared a one-day holiday in the Rawalpindi district and asked people to stay at home unless absolutely necessary.
The Pakistan Army troops were also deployed at the sensitive locations along both banks of the Nullah Leh.
All the Allied Hospitals of the city had been put on high alert till further orders to meet with any eventuality in the wake on rainy spells.
The rainwater submerged low-lying areas near Katarian, Javed Colony, Aryan Mohallah, Gawalmandi, Millat Colony, Jamia Masjid Road, Banni, Mohallah Workshpee, Imamabara, Gawala Road, Ratta Amral, Dhoke Ratta, Sadiqabad, Shakrial and Cantonment areas, where the staff of all operational wings of district administration wings remained actively engaged in evacuating the residents to safer places.
Commissioner Engineer Amir Khattak, Deputy Commissioner Hasan Waqar Cheema, Rawalpindi Development Authority Director General Kinza Murtaza, WASA Managing Director Saleem Ashraf visited different sections of the Nullah Leh and monitored the water situation.
They also directed officials to ensure close coordination with all departments for effective rescue and relief operations.
According to the Media Coordinator Rescue Rawalpindi, more than 400 Rescue personnel, with 17 boats, remained engaged at different places, and evacuated 58 people trapped in the flash flood. Helicopter was also used for the evacuation process.
He said the Rescue teams conducted operations in Raja Bazar, Sangjani, Ladian Chakri, Blue World Society, Gulshan Iqbal, Dhok Kashmirian, Garibabad and Police Foundation.
All the residents of Ladian were also safely evacuated from the flood torrent hitting their homes, he added.
RWMC teams also remained constantly active in different areas, especially Gawalmandi, Katarian, Dhok Khaba and other sensitive places from drainage.
Meanwhile, Provincial Disaster management Authority Director General said as per the directives of Punjab chief minister, the Authority had provided rescue and relief equipment to the Rawalpindi district administration before the monsoon rains.
The PDMA gave 16 OBM (outboard motor) boats, 205 life jackets, 31 ambulances, 19 fire brigades and four rescue vehicles to Rescue 1122, besides 28 de-watering sets, five suction machines, six jetter machines and sic tractors to WASA.
Similarly, the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation was also given five de-watering sets, seven mini trucks, three trucks and three generator sets, he added.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Home Department has imposed Section 144 banning all types of swimming and boating in dams, rivers, canals, ponds and lakes across the province.
Section 144, which will remain in force until August 30, has also been imposed to prohibit bathing in rainwater collected in streets, roads, open spaces, or public places.

World needs spiritual tranquility, social harmony: Minister Imran Shah

LAHORE, Jul 17 (APP):Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Syed Imran Ahmad Shah said on Thursday that sufi saints had given a message of love, tolerance and brotherhood to humanity.
While addressing International Khidmat conference at a local hotel, he said that today world needed spiritual tranquility and social harmony.
Muslim Hands International chairman Pir Syed Lakhte Hassanain, Punjab Auqaf Secretary Dr Tahir Raza Bukhari, Islamic Ideology Council chairman Raghib Hussain Naeemi, Pir Muhammad Aminul Hasnat Shah, Mufti Ramazan Sialvi Ghalib Al Hussani from Turkiye and other religious scholars attended the conference.
The minister congratulated Muslim Hands International for organizing this conference and also welcomed guests from Turkiye.
He said, “Our hearts beat with Turkiye and it has always stood with Pakistan in difficult times.”
Regarding ‘Khanqahi system’ the minister said that ‘Khanqahs’ had not only been the centre of ‘Zikr o Fiqr’ from centuries but also been centre of social service and welfare.
He further said that people of all walks of life had been given respect in these ‘Khanqahs’.
Syed Imran Ahmad Shah said that sufi saints had played great role in areas of education, health, peace and morality besides playing ideological and practical role in Pakistan’s movement.
The Federal Minister said that real identity of Pakistan was attached with the message of sufi saints based on love and peace.
It was need of the hour to make youngsters aware of the teachings of sufi saints so that tolerance, brotherhood and culture of serving others could be promoted in the society, he maintained.
He said, “Let’s make a pledge that we will follow the teachings of sufi saints which unite hearts and eliminates hatred.”
He said that this conference was organized to pay tribute to social services of sufi saints.
The Minister said that sufis laid the foundation of society’s betterment and welfare through their character.
The Urdu translation of Sheikh Abdul Baqi Al-Hussaini’s book, “The Illuminated Path of Sufism in the Light of Quran and Sunnah,” was launched during the conference.
The conference reiterated the commitment to connect Pakistan’s identity with the message of peace and love promoted by Sufis and to introduce this message to the new generation.

DC Murree injured during landslide relief activities

RAWALPINDI, Jul 17 (APP):The Deputy Commissioner Murree, Agha Zahir Abbas Shirazi got injured during a landslide relief operation at Salgran.
According to details, a landslide occurred at Salgran, and the district administration was engaged in rescue and relief operation under the supervision of DC Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi.
The DC got a minor foot injury from a sudden falling rock. However he was treated on spot with the first aid.
“Keeping the people safe is our main goal”, he said and urged the local administration and allied departments to stay ready for any situation during such operations.
The road at Salgran remained closed till the clearance of the landslide debris.
DC urged people to use the Expressway instead, and to follow instructions from the administration and traffic police.
“Tourists should check the weather while planning their trip to Murree”, he said.
A command post and medical camp have been set up at Salgran to help locals and visitors with emergencies and share safety tips.
