Farmers advised to avoid unsuitable soil for sesame cultivation

0
FAISALABAD, Jun 02 (APP):The agriculture experts have advised the farmers to start sesame cultivation immediately and use medium to heavy loam soil for this purpose and unsuitable soil can hamper the production.
A spokesman of Agriculture (Extension) department said here on Monday that sesame is an important cash crop which could not only play a significant role in catering to domestic food requirements but also help the growers mitigate their financial sufferings due to its attractive market value.
He said that best time for sesame cultivation is from June to mid of July. Hence, the farmers should start sesame cultivation immediately and use its high quality seed to get bumper production.
He said that the Agriculture department Punjab has released guidelines to ensure successful sesame cultivation across the province. He advised the growers to select medium to heavy loam soils with good water absorption and moisture retention which are considered most suitable for sesame farming.
He warned against using clayey or non-absorbent soils because stagnant rain or irrigation water in such fields can lead to plant death.
Similarly, excessively sandy, saline-alkaline and low-lying areas are also deemed unsuitable for sesame cultivation due to their poor support for plant growth, he added.
He said that the farmers should select approved sesame varieties for cultivation including TH-6, TS-5, NIAB Pearl, TS-3, NIAB Til 2016, NIAB Millennium, Anmol Til and Black King. These varieties have demonstrated strong production potential under local conditions, he added.
Agri spokesman further said that in the hot climate zones of South Punjab, sesame varieties developed by NIAB Faisalabad can be sown during June and July as these varieties can give maximum yield in these areas.

Abbasi announces 20% discount on fares during three days of Eid

0
ISLAMABAD, Jun 02 (APP):Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi on Monday announced that Pakistan Railways will run five special trains and offer a 20 percent discount on fares during the three days of Eid-ul-Azha.
Speaking to the media, the minister described the last 11 months as a remarkable period for Pakistan Railways, saying the department had shown strong progress. He shared that revenue had reached Rs83 billion, mainly due to better operations, especially in the past four months.
He said Rs42 billion was earned from passenger trains, Rs29 billion from freight services, and Rs13 billion from other sources. For the first time in its history, Pakistan Railways is now able to pay salaries and medical expenses of its staff from its own revenue.
Abbasi highlighted that freight services are a key source of income globally. To improve efficiency, the ministry plans to outsource these operations. He also noted that leased railway land is contributing to revenue, while the Royal Palm Golf and Country Club is being outsourced through a transparent process under the Prime Minister’s vision.
He said Rs1 billion has been allocated to upgrade eight railway hospitals, which will also be outsourced. Railway employees will continue to receive free treatment, while non-employees will pay for services.Fourteen railway schools are also being outsourced. These schools will offer facilities similar to private institutions, and children of railway staff will pay fees based on special terms.
Abbasi said infrastructure improvements are also underway. Cleanliness has improved at Chaklala and Margalla stations, and food services are being strictly monitored with the support of all four provincial food authorities.
To enhance passenger experience, front-desk and train hostess services will be introduced. An anti-encroachment drive based on the Punjab model will be launched to reclaim valuable railway land, including station yards, commercial, residential, and agricultural areas.
He said the Punjab government is fully backing these efforts. Several projects that had been stalled since 2016 are now being revived. As part of the Green Pakistan initiative, trees will be planted along railway tracks.
The minister also announced a Rs45 billion development plan for Punjab, aiming to increase train speeds to 60 km per hour. He said 1,413 new wagons would be produced to support these goals.
A new passenger train between Lahore and Narowal will start operating on June 15, the same day a freight train bound for Russia will be dispatched via Multan and Sindh.
Abbasi added that work is also progressing on a rail link with Kazakhstan. These projects, he said, are crucial for transporting resources from Reko Diq and Thar Coal fields.
He confirmed the closure of three inactive companies related to freight and audit operations and said that Margalla Railway Station would be modernized.
Abbasi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to honoring all agreements with the media and expressed confidence in a promising future for Pakistan Railways.

Punjab to hold LG polls if ECP issues order: CEC

0
ISLAMABAD, Jun 02 (APP):Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja on Monday stated that Punjab will be required to hold local government elections once the Election Commission issues the order as three provinces have already conducted their elections.
A five-member bench, headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja, heard the case concerning the delay in Punjab’s local government elections.
During the proceedings, the Punjab Minister for Local Government informed the commission that a draft of the rules is available and can be provided. He further stated that the legislation for local government elections in Punjab is under review by the standing committee, with efforts underway to accelerate the legislative process.
He added that the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly has been requested to expedite the process.
The Chief Election Commissioner expressed dissatisfaction, stating that despite repeated opportunities and having the government in both the federal and provincial setups, elections were not conducted in Punjab.
Election Commission Secretary Omar Hamid stated that the tenure of Punjab’s local governments ended on December 31, 2021. He further remarked that both the Punjab government and the federal government in Islamabad have shown little interest in holding local government elections, resulting in a three-year delay.
Chief Election Commissioner stated, “In the next hearing, the Election Commission will issue an order for local government elections in Punjab. The commission cannot remain idle—some results are now expected. There must be progress in the next hearing. We will issue the order and set the timeline ourselves, without seeking one from Punjab.”
CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja stated that he had personally appeared before the Supreme Court in the local government elections case, emphasizing that it’s unacceptable for a provincial government to avoid legislation and delay elections for five years.
He further said the Election Commission has the authority to summon the Chief Minister of Punjab and, if local government elections are not held in Islamabad, even the Prime Minister can be summoned.
Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has indefinitely adjourned the hearing on the delay of local bodies elections in Punjab.
