Minister announces Rs1.22bn uplift schemes

LAHORE, Aug 18 (APP):Punjab Minister for Sports and Labour Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar along with Member National Assembly and PML-N Lahore President Malik Saif-ul-Malook Khokhar attended a large public gathering in PP-168, UC-111 Hanjarwal to launch development projects under the Lahore Development Programme (LDP), here on Monday.
Addressing the gathering, the provincial minister announced six new schemes worth Rs1.22 billion, including installation of sewerage lines, road construction, clean drinking water supply, repair and maintenance works, and other civic infrastructure. He said that the projects aimed to provide basic facilities to citizens in line with the vision of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
MNA Malik Saif-ul-Malook Khokhar, in his remarks, said that PML-N’s focus had always been on public service and development. He added that the projects being implemented across Lahore were evidence of the party’s performance and commitment to the people.
The event was attended by a large number of citizens, local representatives, and community leaders.

Sports vital for youth development: Minister

LAHORE, Aug 18 (APP):Punjab Minister for Minorities Affairs Ramesh Singh Arora said that sports are essential to counter intolerance and negative trends in society.
He expressed these views while attending the grand final of the Basketball Legacy Trophy 2025 in Taxila as the chief guest. The event was jointly organized by the Peace Ambassador Society and Christian Hospital, under the arrangements of Chairman of the Presbyterian Medical Board of Pakistan Majeed Abel, said a handout issued here on Monday.
He said that “a healthy Punjab guarantees true progress.” He emphasized that under the leadership of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, initiatives are underway for the welfare of minorities, the revival of playgrounds, and the promotion of sports to provide healthy opportunities for the youth.
In an exciting final match, Lahore’s team defeated Islamabad 94–74 to clinch the championship trophy. Six teams from different cities of Pakistan participated in the tournament, showcasing the growing popularity of basketball.
The event was also attended by Members of the Punjab Assembly Mohsin Ayub Khan and Imran Ilyas, along with a large number of spectators, local leaders, and social figures.
Chairman of the Presbyterian Medical Board of Pakistan Majeed Abel said that the tournament demonstrated how sports can promote peace, harmony, and community well-being. He praised the players’ passion and urged that such initiatives continue.

A four day anti-polio campaign to commence from Sept 1

RAWALPINDI, Aug 18 (APP):An anti-polio campaign will commence in Rawalpindi from September 01 to 04, during which children aged one to five years across the district will be administered protective polio drops. A target has been set to vaccinate over 800,000 children in Rawalpindi district during this campaign, with teams going door-to-door to fulfill their duties.
This was briefed during an important meeting, chaired by senior PML N leader Tahira Aurangzeb MNA, and Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema. Officers from the Health Department, Education Department, World Health Organization (WHO), and other relevant departments attended the meeting.
During the briefing, the CEO Health informed the meeting that two districts of Punjab, including Rawalpindi, have been moved from the red zone to the yellow zone due to their excellent performance in the anti-polio campaign, which is an honor for the district.
Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema said that Rawalpindi has a significant population of migrants, which contributes to cases of polio, dengue, and other diseases.
‘Due to the administration’s efforts, the number of cases remains very low”, he said.
DC directed that measures at the micro-level should be made more effective and warned that strict action would be taken against officers or staff showing negligence or laxity, as they would not be entitled to any leniency.
Tahira Aurangzeb emphasized that special attention should be given to the union councils in Rawalpindi where a large number of migrants from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other peripheral areas reside, ensuring that not a single child is deprived of polio drops.
Additionally, the meeting conducted a detailed review of the dengue situation. The District Coordinator for Dengue provided a briefing, following which the Deputy Commissioner made it clear that all departments must perform their responsibilities with full commitment, and immediate action would be taken against personnel showing poor performance.
After thorough deliberation, directives were issued to devise the best strategy for the anti-polio campaign and dengue control and to ensure its strict implementation.
The district administration and Health Department have appealed to parents and guardians to ensure that their children under five years of age receive polio drops during the forthcoming anti-polio campaign so that future generations can be permanently protected from this debilitating disease.

Pakistani boxers win Int’l titles

RAWALPINDI, Aug 18 (APP):Pakistani fighters secured both international belt titles against Afghanistan in the “Marka-e-Haq King of the Ring Kickboxing” and “Pakistan Professional Boxing Fight Night” held in Rawalpindi on August 16 and 17, in connection to Independence Day celebrations.
Pakistan’s Bushra Akhtar knocked out Afghanistan’s Munira Bakhtiari in the second round of the kickboxing title fight, while Usama Sajid Malik defeated Afghanistan’s Asadullah in the third round of the professional boxing title fight.
Organized by the District Sports Department Rawalpindi at the Shahbaz Sharif Sports Complex, the event featured 18 kickboxing fights and 4 professional boxing matches, including the two international title competitions.
The closing ceremony was attended by Sehrish Qamar Malik, Chairperson of the Women’s Wing of Muslim League (N) Azad Kashmir, who awarded medals to winning fighters and shields to the event officials. District Sports Officer Shams Tauhid Abbasi, Organizing Secretary Mudassar Bashir, and Malik Muhammad Sajid Awan.
Sehrish Qamar Malik praised the District Sports Department for the event’s success and honored the martyrs of Marka-e-Haq, stating that those who sacrificed their lives for the nation will always be remembered as heroes.

DPM/FM Dar, UK Under-Sec review Pak-UK ties

ISLAMABAD, Aug 18 (APP): Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister of Pakistan Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar Monday met with UK’s Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Hamish Falconer and both sides reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations.

During the meeting at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) in London, they reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening cooperation across political, economic, climate, and people-to-people domains.

They also exchanged views on regional and global developments, Foreign Office Spokesperson said in a press release.

He underscored the importance of the just and peaceful resolution of Jammu and Kashmir Dispute, in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.

The two leaders appreciated the positive trajectory of Pakistan–UK ties and expressed satisfaction with on-going collaboration in areas of mutual interest.

They also underscored the importance of maintaining regular high-level engagements to build on existing momentum and to explore new avenues for strategic cooperation.

PSX witnesses bullish trend, gains 1,704 points

ISLAMABAD, Aug 18 (APP):The Pakistan Stock Exchange’s (PSX) benchmark KSE-100 Index witnessed bullish trend on Monday, gaining 1,704.79 points, a positive of 1.16 percent, closing at 148,196.42 points against 146,491.63 points last trading day.
A total of 610,314,508 shares were traded during the day as compared to  473,601,407 shares the previous trading day, whereas the price of shares stood at Rs 39.173 billion against Rs 32.882 billion on the last trading day.
As many as 487 companies transacted their shares in the stock market, 283 of them recorded gains and 175 sustained losses, whereas the share price of 29 companies remained unchanged.
The three top trading companies were WorldCall Telecom with 40,719,854 shares at Rs 1.40 per share, Pervez Ahmed Company with 29,750,970 shares at Rs2.82 per share and Al-Shaheer Corporation with 26,351,931 shares at Rs 12.24 per share.
Hoechst Pakistan Limited witnessed a maximum increase of Rs 323.88 per share price, closing at Rs 3,830.59, whereas the runner-up was PIA Holding Company LimitedB with Rs186.13 rise in its per share price to Rs 28,001.10.
Nestle Pakistan Limited witnessed a maximum decrease of Rs259.15 per share closing at Rs 8,394.94 followed by Unilever Pakistan Foods Limited with Rs100.00 decline in its share price to close at Rs31,900.00.
Meanwhile, in the future market, as many as 323 companies traded shares in the market out of which 213 witnessed gain, 102 loss where the prices of 8 companies remained unchanged.

Amateur golfers shine at Hot Weather Independence Cup 2025

PESHAWAR, Aug 18 (APP):The Hot Weather Independence Cup 2025, a prestigious two-day amateur golf tournament, concluded here with 55 talented golfers, including both boys and girls, competing in various categories.
The tournament was organized by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Golf Association and jointly hosted by the City University of Science and Information Technology (CUSIT), Peshawar, and the PAF Golf Club, Peshawar.
The event highlighted the dedication and sportsmanship of emerging golfers, making it a vibrant celebration of both competition and camaraderie.
The prize distribution ceremony was attended by Lt Gen. Omer Ahmed Bukhari HI(M) as the chief guest.
He congratulated the participants and winners on their achievements and was presented with a City University souvenir by Vice Chancellor Engr. Dr. Nasrullah Khan.

Cloudburst wreaks havoc in Swabi’s village

SWABI, Aug 18 (APP):A devastating cloudburst in Dalori village of Swabi district has caused severe destruction, submerging houses and sweeping away nearly 15 people in flash floods. The incident has triggered landslides in the mountainous terrain, complicating relief efforts.
Deputy Commissioner Nasrullah Khan described the situation as critical, stating that the intense, fast-flowing torrent engulfed the entire area. “The flash flood was extremely powerful, catching residents off guard,” he told reporters.
Rescue operations are underway, with teams from the district administration, Rescue 1122, and additional support from Haripur and Mardan working to locate missing persons and assist affected families. Authorities have declared a state of emergency and warned locals to avoid rivers and streams.
The Meteorological Department has forecast more rain and possible cloudbursts in the region, keeping the administration on high alert.

Rupee gains 05 paisa against US Dollar

ISLAMABAD, Aug 18 (APP):The Rupee on Monday appreciated by 05 paisa against the US Dollar in the interbank trading and closed at Rs 282.01 against the previous day’s closing of Rs 282.06.
However, according to the Forex Association of Pakistan (FAP), the buying and selling rates of the dollar in the open market stood at Rs 283.5 and Rs 284.5, respectively.
The price of the Euro decreased by Rs 0.30 to close at Rs 329.28 against the last day’s closing of Rs 329.58, according to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).
The Japanese yen came down by 01 pasia and closed at Rs1.91, while the exchange rate of the British Pound witnessed a decrease of 53 paisa to close at Rs381.83 against the last day’s closing of Rs 382.36.
The exchange rates of the Emirates Dirham and the Saudi Riyal decreased by 01 paisa each and closed at Rs 76.78 and Rs 75.16, respectively.

Rawal Dam spillways open after water level reaches 1,751 feet

ISLAMABAD, Aug 18 (APP):The administration opened the spillways of Rawal Dam following a rise in the water level up to 1,751 feet.
According to the statement on Monday, Assistant Commissioner Nilore personally supervised the operation, while rescue teams, police and ambulance services have been stationed at key points to ensure safety.
In light of the situation, authorities have directed all concerned institutions to adopt precautionary measures. The administration has also urged citizens to stay away from rivers and canals to avoid any untoward incident.
