Gonzalez defends WBC flyweight crown

LOS ANGELES, April 24 (APP/AFP): Roman Gonzalez of Nicaragua enhanced his reputation as one of the world’s best pound-for-pound fighters here Saturday after easily defeating Puerto Rico’s McWilliams Arroyo to retain his World Boxing Council flyweight crown.

The 28-year-old champion improved his record to 45-0 (38 knockouts) to claim a unanimous decision over the game but outclassed Arroyo in a bruising 12-round contest at Los Angeles’s iconic Forum sports arena in Inglewood.

Two judges scored it 119-109 in Gonzalez’s favor with the third card marked at 120-108.The scores did not flatter the champion.

UN envoy urges Yemeni parties to prioritize national interest for peace in war-torn country

KUWAIT CITY, April 24, (APP/AFP) – A third day of UN-brokered peace negotiations in Kuwait between the Yemeni government and rebels wound up Saturday without progress, sources close to the talks said.

The sources told AFP the two sides remained far apart, especially on the need to firm up a fragile ceasefire that went into effect on April 11.

UN envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said in a statement late Saturday the talks had achieved “common ground to build on” but acknowledged that the negotiations were difficult.

ISLAMABAD, April 23 (APP): Federal Minister for Information,
Broadcasting and National Heritage Pervaiz Rashid Saturday said
according to the Terms of Reference (TORs), the Judicial Commission
was mandated to investigate all sorts of violations and infringement
of Pakistani money laws.
These comprehensively include Income Tax laws, State Bank of
Pakistan’s laws and regulations, money laundering laws and any such law or laws and monetary policy of the state, he said in a statenment.
The minister stressed that the commission would be fully empowered to examine and fairly investigate all cases of tax evasions, money laundering or other such cases of illegal practices.

GHAKHAR MANDI, April 23 (APP): Federal Minister for Information,
Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid said on Saturday that the Judicial Commission headeded by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) would be fully empowered and also have complete authority to carry out forensic audit through an international audit firm.
Talking to reporters here, the minister said the government would provide all financial assistance in that regard.
He said the Prime Minister enjoyed complete confidence of the nation and the Parliament. On the other hand ‘defeated players’ had not only failed in the people’s court in 2013 but also their lies were exposed after the report of Supreme Court inquiry commission in 2015. They would meet the same fate again in 2016, he added.

UNITED NATIONS, Apr 23 (APP): A United Nations human rights expert has called on the Indian government for immediate attention and implementation of the right to ensure adequate housing for the most disadvantaged, saying people were experiencing discrimination.

“I am extremely concerned for the millions of people who experience exclusion, discrimination, evictions, insecure tenure, homelessness and who lack hope of accessing affordable and adequate housing in their lifetimes,” Leilani Farha, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, warned at the end of her two-week official visit to the country.
Discrimination and social exclusion, urban homelessness, and evictions are among some most complex housing issues, according to the UN rights expert.

Arrangements afoot for spectrum auction

ISLAMABAD, Apr 23 (APP): Arrangements are afoot for auction of 850 MHz out of the available spectrum in the first phase which would be followed by auction of 1,800 MHz in the second phase.
This was disclosed during a meeting chaired by Finance Minister here Saturday, Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar to a review an update on arrangements being undertaken for spectrum auction in the country.
The participants were informed that in line with the instructions given by the Finance Minister, steps were being taken to ensure that this process is executed with complete transparency.

Govt committed to development, prosperity of Balochistan: President

that the government was committed to development and progress of
Balochistan and it would leave no stone unturned to bring it at
par with other provinces.

In a meeting with Governor Balochistan Muhammad Khan Achakzai
who called on him at the Aiwan e Sadr, here on Friday, the President
said that completion of mega development projects, particularly China
Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), would play a significant role in
the development of Balochistan and usher in prosperity of the
province.

The Governor Balochistan briefed the President about overall
situation of the province and the efforts and measures, being taken
to restore peace and stability there.

ISLAMABAD, Apr 23 (APP): Spokesman to the Prime Minister Dr. Musadik Malik Saturday said that Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has announced to form a judicial commission under the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Supreme Court on the demand of opposition parties.
Talking to PTV, he said the announcement was made by the Prime Minister after consultation with opposition parties.
He said, the commission has been made fully authorised to independently investigate the Panama Papers allegations on the Prime Minister and his family.

President stresses upon promotion of sports culture

through cultivating a sports culture in the country.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony of Quaid e Azam Inter-Provincial Games here, the President said there was no dearth of talent in the country and through consistent endeavours by all the stakeholders, the youth could excel in different domains of sports.
The President also called for collaborated efforts for promotion of traditional games, including kabbadi, wrestling, tent pegging etc, besides upgrading the standards in modern games.

UNSC deplores tragedy in Mediterranean involving death of 500 migrants

UNITED NATIONS, Apr 23 (APP): The United Nations Security Council has deplored the recent maritime tragedy in the Mediterranean Sea that resulted in up to 500 deaths when an overcrowded boat capsized en route from Libya to Europe, emphasizing the need for better coordination of efforts to deal with the smuggling of migrants.
In a press statement, the members of the Council expressed “grave concern” at the proliferation of, and endangerment of lives by, the smuggling of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, including off the coast of Libya.
“The members of the Security Council expressed their concern at the implications for regional stability posed by transnational organized crime and illicit activities such as human trafficking and the smuggling of migrants and condemned and deplored the said acts which undermine further the process of stabilization of Libya and endanger the lives of people,” the statement said.
