China pivotal to Pakistan's foreign policy: Maleeha

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts, April 27 (APP): Pakistan’s relationship with  China is strategic, historic, trouble free and pivotal to the country’s foreign policy, Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi said during a talk at Harvard University here.

Speaking in a Programme run by the Kennedy School called the “Future of  Diplomacy,” Dr Lodhi, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN, set out the country’s regional and global agenda and emphasized that this reflected national priorities and Islamabad’s role as a ‘critical state’ in international affairs.

The national priorities she listed included economic revival, the defeat  of terrorism and elimination of violent extremism in and around Pakistan, preservation of the country’s strategic capability and building regional peace and stability.The latter, she explained, required an end to the conflict in Afghanistan, and normalization of Pakistan-India relations on an equitable and durable basis.

Trump wins three primaries, Clinton takes Maryland

WASHINGTON, April 27 (APP/AFP): Republican presidential frontrunner  Donald Trump on Tuesday scored major wins in the Pennsylvania, Maryland and Connecticut primaries, US networks projected, while Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton drew first blood in Maryland.

Trump and Clinton were expected to do well in the night’s five  contests, which also include votes in Delaware and Rhode Island.

The two are looking to move even closer to locking up the nominations of their respective parties.

Coordinated global efforts needed to curb terrorism: Nisar

LONDON, April 26 (APP): Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar
Ali Khan Tuesday said terrorism was a global issue and
coordinated efforts at international level were needed to curb
the menace.
Terrorism in different regions had its own reasons and
dimensions which needed regional approach to tackle, he said while speaking here at International Institute of Strategic
Studies.
He said international focus and cooperation, however, must
continue to eliminate the scourge.

Final draft of budget strategy paper reviewed

ISLAMABAD, Apr 26 (APP):Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar chaired a meeting to review the final draft of the Budget Strategy Paper, for the period 2016-17 to 2018-19 here on Tuesday.
The strategy will be presented to the Federal Cabinet for
approval on April 27.
The Minister was briefed on the broad contours of the
macroeconomic framework, which formed the basis of the budget strategy for the next three years period, said a statement issued by Ministry of Finance here.

Nisar stresses for enhancing mutual cooperation between Pakistan, UK

state of Pak-UK bilateral relations, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan Tuesday stressed the need for enhancing mutual cooperation in all possible areas to further tap the existing potential for cooperation between the two countries.
This he said while talking to his British counterpart Ms. Theresa May here on Tuesday.
The two leaders discussed a host of issues ranging from
cooperation in counter-terrorism, illegal immigration, organized crimes, counter narcotics, money laundering, Dr Imran Farooq murder case and other issues of mutual interest.

Fiscal reforms, improve business environment helped growth in Pakistan: IMF Regional Outlook

WASHIGNTON, April 26 (APP) Reforms to reduce fiscal deficit and improve business environment supported economic recovery in some regional countries including Pakistan, according to the Regional Economic Outlook by the IMF for Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Growth in the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (MENAP) region remains subdued owing to persistently low oil prices and deepening regional conflict, said the IMF in it regional assessment launched in Dubai. Growth in the regions under review averaged 3.75 percent in 2015, compared to 3 percent over 2011-14.
Lower oil prices, less drag from fiscal consolidation, and improved confidence owing to progress with recent reforms including reforms to reduce fiscal deficits and improve the business environment (Morocco, Pakistan) supported the recovery, helping to counteract the negative impact of rising security risks and spillovers from regional conflicts, according to the outlook.

Pakistan keen to strengthen defence, economic ties with Azerbaijan: PM

ISLAMABAD, Apr 26 (APP): Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on
Tuesday said Pakistan values its close friendly relations with
Azerbaijan and is keen to enhance ties in defence, energy,
commercial and economic fields.
The Prime Minister stated this in a meeting with Azerbaijan’s
Minister for Defence Industry Yavar Jamalov here here at the PM House.
Nawaz Sharif recalled his meeting with the President of
Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at Davos on the sidelines of World Economic Forum this January, where both the leaders agreed to enhance bilateral ties.

COAS, Jordanian king discuss enhanced defence collaboration

Raheel Sharif, who is on an official visit to Jordon on
Tuesday called on King Abdullah II at King’s Palace.
Matters of mutual interest including enhanced defence
and security collaboration and regional security situation in
the Middle East came under discussion, an ISPR news release here stated.
Both the leaders agreed that Pakistan and Jordan shared a great history of cordial relations and deep rooted spirit of brotherhood, which is transforming into enduring partnership.

Violent extremism 'affront' to UN principles, Global Forum told in Baku

UNITED NATIONS, April 26 (APP): The head of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), a body mandated to promote harmony among nations, Tuesday emphasized the need to counter narratives of hatred and mistrust in order to prevent violent extremism.
“The Alliance is the soft power tool established to contribute to a more peaceful world by countering radicalization and polarization, by encouraging greater intercultural understanding and engaging in projects and programs that advance these goals,” UNAOC High Representative Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser said during the opening session of its 7th Global Forum in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku.
He said that this year’s theme “Living together in inclusive
societies: a challenge and a goal” converges with the four pillars of the UN: peace and security, human rights, rule of law, and development.
