Paying homage to the heroic freedom struggle, the Charge’ d’ Affaires said that under the dynamic leadership of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the Muslims of the subcontinent altered the course of history in creating an independent homeland of their own. Pakistan was the fulfilment of an epic struggle for self-determination.

The Charge d’ Affaires said that the abiding lesson of the independence movement is that freedom is not free; the road to freedom was paved with the blood and sacrifice of countless martyrs. It is equally true that freedom cannot be taken for granted; it has to be preserved and defended every day. As recent developments affirm, Pakistan is fully capable of defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity against any external threat or aggression, he added.

The Chargé d’ Affaires said that during the course of the last 78 years, Pakistan has made remarkable progress on its journey towards advancement and prosperity. He eulogised the heroic sacrifices of the nation’s defenders, who laid their lives for the protection and dignity of the motherland.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and stability, the Charge’ d’ Affaires said that the goal of regional peace can be achieved on the basis of sovereign equality, mutual trust and peaceful settlement of all disputes, including Jammu and Kashmir – while an outlook built on dialogue and diplomacy can serve as a harbinger for a bright future for South Asia, any approaches rooted in hegemonic notions of domination and control, will on the other hand, continue to hold back the promise of regional prosperity and development.

PMD warns of rapid glacier melt in Gilgit-Baltistan due to unusual heat

0
ISLAMABAD, Aug 14 (APP):The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning of accelerated snow and glacier melt in Gilgit-Baltistan as temperatures in the region remain 7-9 degree celsius above normal.
The unusual heat is significantly intensifying the rate of snow and ice melting, raising the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
According to the PMD’s Flood Forecasting Division, both maximum and minimum temperatures are persistently higher than the average, leading to massive snowmelt and increased water inflow into reservoirs.
The data shows that up to the first 10 days of August, inflow into the Tarbela Reservoir during the current kharif season has reached 41.8 million acre-feet (MAF), which is 5.64 MAF above the normal seasonal inflow of 36.16 MAF.
The department cautioned that the rapid melting of snow could lead to the formation and expansion of glacial lakes, which pose a serious flood threat to downstream areas. Officials urged relevant authorities and communities to remain vigilant, particularly in vulnerable valleys, to mitigate potential disaster impacts.

Australian scientists target frost losses threatening wheat industry

0

CANBERRA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua/APP): Australian scientists are leading efforts to protect grain growers from frost damage, costing the wheat industry over 360 million Australian dollars (about 235 million U.S. dollars) a year.

Field trials are being combined with laboratory and controlled-environment studies to develop genetic solutions to frost, according to a statement released Wednesday by Australia’s Charles Sturt University (CSU).

Crop scientists are studying novel wheat germplasm in fields and frost-simulation chambers to uncover genetic links to frost damage, which has risen by 30 percent in southern Australia since 2000, with climate models predicting both frequency and severity will intensify, it said.

“This presents a challenge to breeders to improve crop tolerance to stress and for industry to integrate new genetic potential into farming systems to continually adapt to climate change, thus increasing productivity,” said CSU Senior Lecturer in Crop Science Felicity Harris.

Plants time their growth and flowering to seasonal patterns in temperature, light and moisture, but frost can disrupt this, damaging tissues from cell to canopy and hindering development, researchers said.

The project, now in its second year of field validation, aims to equip plant breeders with knowledge to develop frost-tolerant varieties and tools to help growers reduce future frost damage, Harris said.

“In the long run, this will contribute to reducing risk associated with frost and improved crop productivity for Australian farmers,” she said.

The CSU heads the New South Wales arm of three national research projects funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation and led by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, Australia’s national science agency, with partners nationwide.
