Baseball: Shohei Ohtani allows 4 runs, triples on 2-way return vs. Angels

ANAHEIM, Aug 14 (Kyodo/APP): Shohei Ohtani allowed four runs over 4-1/3 innings facing his old Los Angeles Angels teammates for the first time Wednesday as the Los Angeles Dodgers suffered a three-game series sweep with a 6-5 defeat.

The two-way star extended his longest hitting run of the year to 12 games, but his home run streak came to an end after four games following a 1-for-4 outing at the plate as the Dodgers dropped to second in the National League West.

“This is a stadium where I have lots of memories. Of course it’s one of my favorites,” said Ohtani, who struck out seven with no walks while allowing five hits in his longest start since his return, also hurling his most pitches.

“I think it’s been a good day that I was able to pitch (here), also in terms of stepping up (my comeback).”

Ohtani’s leadoff triple sparked a three-run first inning for the Dodgers before he began his ninth pitching start this season with a 1-2-3 home half at Angel Stadium.

The second of his two strikeouts came against Mike Trout in what was their first matchup since the 2023 World Baseball Classic final when the Japanese struck out the American swinging to seal the title in Miami.

Taylor Ward blasted a solo shot off Ohtani’s 2-1 four-seamer in the second before Yoan Moncada doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly, but Mookie Betts’ bases-loaded single and a bases-loaded walk scored two more Dodgers runs in the fourth.

Ohtani had Trout striking out looking again in the bottom of the inning when he threw a 2-2 four-seamer to the low-outside corner of the zone, clocking 101 miles per hour, as the first win since his September 2023 right elbow surgery began to loom.

But Ohtani gave up two singles with one out in the fifth before Zach Neto doubled to left to make it a one-run game. The 80th pitch of the game proved to be the last for Ohtani as skipper Dave Roberts turned to the bullpen.

Logan O’Hoppe hit a bases-loaded, two-run single in the eighth to turn the game around for the Angels.

Gov’t to use AI to help teach Japanese to kids with foreign roots

TOKYO, Aug 14 (Kyodo/APP): The Japanese government plans to promote the use of generative artificial intelligence and other digital technologies to support the teaching of the Japanese language to children with foreign roots, sources close to the matter said Thursday.

Guidelines are expected to be drawn up to utilize generative AI for effective teaching methods for other subjects in addition to Japanese, amid a shortage of staff who can accommodate the native tongues of varying languages such as Portuguese, Chinese and Spanish.

The education ministry plans to include related expenses in its budget request for fiscal 2026 starting next April to complete the guidelines within the year at the earliest, the sources said.

There were around 69,000 students who required Japanese language instruction enrolled in public elementary, junior high and high schools and special needs schools as of May 2023, the highest number since the survey began in fiscal 1991, according to the ministry.

But around 10 percent of the students are not receiving Japanese language support in-class or after school.

The education ministry plans to develop a system that incorporates translation apps powered by generative AI and online teaching into schools, aiming to provide high-quality education regardless of the students’ background.

The guidelines will not only outline teaching methods for Japanese and other subjects, but also the measures necessary for schools to smoothly accept students with foreign roots into schools.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology will also conduct research on effective collaboration between teachers, Japanese language instructors, and native language support staff.

It also plans to expand budget requests from fiscal 2025 to subsidize local governments to hire such language instructor and support staff and hold guidance programs to promote school enrollment for foreign children who are not attending school.

Shaza unveils Pakistan’s Digital Future on Independence Day

ISLAMABAD, Aug 14 (APP):Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja unveiled Pakistan’s “Digital Future” vision on the country’s Independence Day on Thursday.
Addressing a gathering organised by the Ministry of Information Technology & Telecommunication and its allied organisations to mark the occasion, she recalled Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s vision of a strong, progressive, and self-reliant Pakistan.
The event brought together leaders from government, industry, startups and academia to celebrate the nation’s progress.
This year’s Independence Day also commemorated Marka-e-Haq—Pakistan’s remarkable triumph over India in May, when courage, professionalism, and technical capability combined to secure victory.
Not only was this a historic moment etched in the country’s history, it also set a blueprint for achieving success in every sphere of life.
Shaza invoked Quaid-e-Azam’s belief that Pakistan’s future rests on hard work, discipline, and unity, linking the spirit of independence to “digital sovereignty” — building a self-reliant nation in technology, innovation, and governance.
She paid tribute to the youth, women, entrepreneurs, and IT professionals as the architects of an equitably prosperous Pakistan.
“With Marka-e-Haq, Pakistan redefined the rules of engagement to become a meaningful global player that cannot be ignored. On this 14th of August, we commit to using technology to redefine the rules of engagement for creating an equitable, prosperous Pakistan within our lifetime,” she said.
Highlighting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s “Digital Nation Pakistan” vision, she said it was built on three core pillars — Digital Economy, Digital Society, and Digital Governance — to ensure the country “moves forward as one nation, using technology to leapfrog decades into becoming a developed country.”
She paid tribute to the Federal Cabinet, the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), the Armed Forces, and specially Field Marshal COAS General Syed Asim Munir for their unwavering leadership, dedication, and sacrifices in steering the nation’s economic and technological progress, and for playing a pivotal role in securing Pakistan’s recent triumph in Marka-e-Haq.
She said Pakistan’s recent international recognition in the digital domain, including its elevation to Tier-1 “Role Modelling” status in the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024, and a 14-place jump in the UN E-Government Development Index (EGDI), placing the country in the “High EGDI” category for the first time.
Referring to the GSMA Gender Gap Report 2025, she expressed pride that the mobile internet gender gap had reduced from 38% to 25%, with 8 million women starting to use mobile internet in FY 2024-25. Women’s mobile internet usage nearly doubled from 10% to 19%, a milestone she described as a personal priority when she assumed charge of the ministry.
Outlining the future roadmap under the “Digital Nation Pakistan” initiative, the minister stated that it would focus on youth empowerment, improved governance, industry facilitation, and the development of a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) to transform Pakistan.
She said that the National AI Policy 2025 had been approved, promoting AI innovation, ethical AI development, and economic growth.
The National Fiberisation Initiative will expand high-speed internet access nationwide, while the IMT Spectrum Auction will ensure 5G readiness, boost foreign direct investment, and accelerate telecom growth.
Satellite internet services will be launched to connect all regions, and the “Uninterrupted Internet for IT Companies Policy” will guarantee consistent, high-quality connectivity to support IT exports and service delivery.
She further added that under DigiSkills 3.0, the Ministry of IT & Telecom aims to train over 3.3 million IT professionals in the next three years, including 300,000 through Huawei and 200,000 through Google.
