AIOU BASR meeting approves majority of PhD research synopses

ISLAMABAD, Aug 12 (APP):The 74th meeting of the Board of Advanced Studies and Research (BASR) at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) successfully concluded on Tuesday, in which 32 PhD scholars from the Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies and the Faculty of Social Sciences presented their research synopses.
The meeting was chaired by BASR Director, Professor Dr. Irshad Ahmad Arshad while university Deans, renowned faculty members and subject experts from relevant departments also participated.
During the meeting the quality, confidence and diversity of topics presented by the scholars were highly appreciated. Most of the synopses were granted immediate approval, while a few were sent back with constructive suggestions for further improvement.
Participants expressed satisfaction as the proposed research topics were closely aligned with Pakistan’s social, educational and economic challenges.
Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Dr. Abdul Aziz Sahir, remarked, “Under the visionary leadership of Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Nasir Mahmood, AIOU is taking significant steps to adopt global research standards and align them directly with the country’s socio-economic priorities. The university ensures that research projects are not only valued in the academic world but also meet the practical needs of society.”
In line with the Vice Chancellor’s directives, BASR meetings are being held regularly to maintain continuity and quality in research activities.

Pakistan welcomes U.S. move to designate BLA, Majeed Brigade as terrorist groups

ISLAMABAD, Aug 12 (APP): Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has welcomed the United States’ decision to designate the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and the banned Majeed Brigade as terrorist organizations, calling it a significant diplomatic victory for Pakistan.

In a statement on Tuesday, Naqvi expressed “heartfelt thanks” to U.S. President Donald Trump and the American administration for the move, terming it “another defeat for our eternal enemy” and “a recognition of Pakistan’s unparalleled sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.”

He said the decision would help pave the way for coordinated international action against the two militant outfits. “Pakistan–U.S. cooperation in counterterrorism is a welcome development, and a united stance against terrorists is the need of the hour,” he stressed.

The minister added that Washington’s move would contribute to promoting peace and stability in the region.

CDA, PPAF join hands to uplift marginalized communities in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD, Aug 12 (APP):The Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) have agreed to launch joint initiatives aimed at improving living conditions in underprivileged areas of Islamabad, with a focus on skill development, job creation, and community empowerment.
The agreement was reached during a meeting between CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa and PPAF Chief Executive Officer Nadir Gul Barech at CDA Headquarters on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, Randhawa underscored the importance of inclusive growth in the federal capital. “Sustainable urban development and social welfare are essential for the prosperity of the city,” he said, adding that CDA is committed to improving the lives of all residents and will work closely with relevant institutions to achieve this goal.
Barech praised the CDA’s leadership for its development efforts and pledged PPAF’s full support. “We are confident that our collaboration will lead to effective measures for poverty alleviation and economic empowerment,” he said.
Under the agreement, both organizations will enhance coordination to launch practical, community-focused projects.
The planned initiatives aim to reduce poverty in Islamabad’s marginalized neighborhoods by creating sustainable economic opportunities and promoting active citizen participation.
The meeting was attended by senior CDA board members, including Member Administration and Estate Talat Mehmood, Member Finance Tahir Naeem, Member Planning Dr. Khalid Hafiz, and Member Environment Esfandyar Baloch.

Pakistani nation’s resolve remains unbeaten; Danyal Ch

RAWALPINDI, Aug 12 (APP):Federal Parliamentary Secretary, Barrister Danyal Chaudhry on Tuesday said that Pakistani nation is united to combat any challenge, with a great unbeaten spirit.
He remarked this during the ‘Potohar Awards’ ceremony at Radio Pakistan, Rawalpindi which was organized to mark the 78th Independence Day.
Speaking on the occasion, he emphasized that Pakistan was born from the great sacrifices of our elders and the spirit of ‘La Ilaha ilAllah, which cannot be defeated.
Barrister Chaudhry highlighted the recent struggle on May 6, where the entire nation united like an steel wall to defeat an enemy with far superior resources. He reiterated that the spirit of 1947 and the Islamic faith remain invincible, keeping the nation into a strong entity. He stressed that the progress of the country and its people hinges on performance and dedication.
Congratulating the artists awarded for their outstanding contributions, he underscored that recognition should be based on merit and achievement, not criticism or slander. He said that success in offices or at government level, depends on deliverance, and only those who work diligently deserve opportunities to advance. He urged the younger generation to carry forward the legacy of freedom passed down by their elders.
Underlining the importance of reconciliation over hatred or revenge, Barrister Chaudhry described revenge as a characteristic of the weak, while reconciliation plays pivotal role for countries’ progress. He emphasized the importance of teaching children to respect and obey their parents, as this strengthens societal fabric.
“Educators and societal role models should guide the new generation positively”, he urged while observing the weakening of family values in Western societies as a cautionary example.
For the progress of Radio Pakistan, he announced plans to collaborate with DG Radio, Saeed Sheikh to make it further professional and financial organization. He highlighted that his ministry will render for betterment of Radio Pakistan as was done for Pakistan Television Corporation.
“My presence at PBC today must fetch some good fuots for the Radio Pakistan”, he said reiterating his commitment to chalk out a plan for PBC’s improvement. He proposed a mechanism to financially support Radio Pakistan through excise and taxation department by leveraging the use of radios in vehicles, aiming to strengthen the institution.
He also lauded DG Radio, Station Director Musarat Shahrukh and the Rawalpindi station staff for their commendable performance.
The event featured Senator Irfan Siddiqui as the chief guest. Awards were distributed among various artists, scriptwriters, program hosts, producers, poets, and technical staff for their exceptional contributions.

Rupee gains 04 paisa against US Dollar

ISLAMABAD, Aug 12 (APP):The Rupee on Tuesday appreciated by 04 paisa against the US Dollar in the interbank trading and closed at Rs 282.41 against the previous day’s closing Rs 282.45.
However, according to the Forex Association of Pakistan (FAP), the buying and selling rates of the dollar in the open market stood at Rs 284.2 and Rs 285.7, respectively.
The price of the Euro decreased by 68 pasia to close at Rs 328.15 against the last day’s closing of Rs 328.83, according to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).
The Japanese yen came down by 01 pasia and closed at Rs 1.90, whereas the exchange rate of the British Pound remained stagnant at Rs 380.07.
The exchange rates of the Emirates Dirham and the Saudi Riyal decreased by 01 paisa each and closed at Rs 76.89 and Rs 75.25, respectively.

PM directs completion of 100MW Solar Project in Gilgit-Baltistan within a year

ISLAMABAD, Aug 12 (APP): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed the completion of the 100-megawatt solar power project in Gilgit-Baltistan within a year, vowing to personally monitor its progress.

Chairing a review meeting here following the recent approval of the project by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), the Prime Minister stressed that the initiative will be executed on a priority basis to ensure uninterrupted, low-cost, and environment-friendly electricity supply to the region.

“All infrastructure for the project must be climate-resilient,” the Prime Minister instructed, adding that transparency will be ensured at every stage of its construction. He highlighted that the federal government will bear the entire cost of the project, which is expected to significantly reduce the region’s prolonged load-shedding of up to 20 hours a day and provide power to remote areas.

Under the plan, six solar parks will be set up in Gilgit, eight in Skardu, and six in Diamer. Additionally, 234 buildings in Gilgit, 179 in Skardu, and 68 in Diamer will be equipped with solar installations. The project will also include battery storage for backup supply and a real-time monitoring system, adhering to international standards.

The Prime Minister said solarization was the most viable solution to meet Gilgit-Baltistan’s energy needs, noting that integrating renewable energy sources into Pakistan’s energy mix was essential to mitigate the effects of climate change.

“Lighting up Gilgit-Baltistan is not just an infrastructure project; it is a lifeline for its people,” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif remarked.
He also directed that hydel and solar energy generation in the region be structured to ensure uninterrupted supply during extreme weather conditions.

The steering committee for the project will be chaired by Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Owais Khan Leghari. The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Ahsan Iqbal and Ahad Khan Cheema, PM’s Coordinator Musharraf Zaidi, renewable energy expert Dr. Gerwin Dreesmann, and other senior officials.

Azerbaijan celebrated Pakistan’s victory with exceptional joy: Abdul Aleem Khan

ISLAMABAD, Aug 12 (APP):Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan on Tuesday said that Pakistan and Azerbaijan are bound by deep historical, regional and religious ties.
He noted that the people of Azerbaijan and Pakistan share a brotherly bond as reflected in the fact that during the recent “Bunyaan al Marsoos” operation against India, the Azerbaijani people celebrated Pakistan’s victory with exceptional joy.
He expressed these views during a meeting with the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Pakistan, H.E. Khazar Farhadov, who called on him at his office here, said a press release.
Abdul Aleem Khan highlighted that in recent years, relations between the two countries have significantly strengthened with notable progress in mutual cooperation. He termed the establishment of the Pakistan-Azerbaijan Joint Chamber of Commerce in Islamabad as a highly positive development that will facilitate the business communities of both countries.
Federal Minister further stated that Pakistan is deeply interested in enhancing overland connectivity, trade and cooperation with Central Asian States. He pointed out that a large number of Pakistani students are pursuing education in these countries and that during recent public gatherings of the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party, the display of Azerbaijani national flags alongside those of China and Türkiye was a clear expression of the friendly ties between the peoples of Pakistan and Azerbaijan which is a good omen.
Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Pakistan H.E. Khazar Farhadov affirmed that the friendship between the two countries will continue to grow in the coming days, as well. He said that Azerbaijan is keen to boost bilateral trade and cooperation with Pakistan. He also appreciated Abdul Aleem Khan’s recent visit to Azerbaijan, acknowledging his personal commitment and efforts that have brought the two countries more closely.

ICT admin declares public holiday on August 13

ISLAMABAD, Aug 12 (APP):The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has announced a public holiday on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, across the Federal Capital.
According to a notification issued by the District Magistrate, all private institutions, including schools, colleges, universities, businesses, and offices, will remain closed within the limits of Islamabad.
Meanwhile, the order, however, excludes offices providing essential services. These include the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI), Capital Development Authority (CDA), ICT Administration, Islamabad Police, Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), and hospitals, which will remain open and operational.
The notification also clarifies that all federal ministries, divisions, attached departments, and subordinate offices located in Islamabad will remain open on the day.
In addition, the administration has announced that several public places and recreational sites will remain closed for the day. Lake View Park, Daman-e-Koh, Pakistan Monument, and Shakarparian will be off-limits to the general public on August 13. While, popular hiking spots, including Trail 2, Trail 3, Trail 4, Trail 5, and the trail behind Saidpur Village, will also remain closed.
This local holiday applies only within ICT’s revenue limits and will not affect government operations at the federal level.

RCB crackdown; illegal milk factory sealed, 1100 lit of toxic milk destroyed

RAWALPINDI, Aug 12 (APP):The Food Control Department of the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) carried out large-scale operations in Pirwadhai and other areas, sealing an illegal factory producing chemical-mixed milk, destroying 1,100 liters of hazardous milk along with related equipment, issuing 22 notices over poor hygiene and lack of medical certificates, and collecting 30 food samples for laboratory testing.
On the directions of Deputy Cantonment Executive Officer Nasir Kamal, a team led by Food Control In-charge Haroon Chaudhry raided the illegal factory located in the Pirwadhai area of the cantonment, disposing of 1,100 liters of adulterated milk and related equipment before sealing the premises.
According to an RCB spokesperson, the Food Control Cell conducts daily crackdowns across all cantonment areas to curb hazardous and substandard food in order to ensure the provision of safe and quality food to residents.
Additionally, during operations in various parts of the cantonment, the Food Control Cell issued 22 notices over unsanitary conditions and lack of medical certificates, and collected 30 food samples from different outlets, which were sent to the Public Analyst Laboratory for testing.

ANF recovers over 15 kg of drugs worth Rs 3.4 million in 5 operations

RAWALPINDI, Aug 12 (APP):The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), conducting 4 operations across the country, recovered as many as 15 kilograms of drugs worth more than Rs 3.4 million and arrested 5 suspects, said an ANF Headquarters spokesman on Tuesday.
He informed that 180 grams of heroin were recovered from two motorcyclists near the Islamabad Motorway Toll Plaza.
The arrested suspects confessed to selling drugs to students of educational institutions.
In another operation,3.345 kg of ice absorbed in clothes in a parcel sent to Australia was recovered from a courier office located on Abbot Road, Lahore.
Similarly,6.040 kg of ice absorbed in clothes in a parcel sent to New Zealand was recovered from a courier office located on Shahrah-e-Faisal, Karachi.
During another operation,5 kg of hashish was recovered from a woman in Sohrab Goth, Karachi, while 980 grams of ice were recovered from an accused in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi.
Cases have been registered against the arrested suspects under the Narcotics Control Act, and further investigations are underway.
