Voicing concern, UN chief warns of ‘dangerous escalation’ Israel’s Gaza military takeover would setoff

0

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 08 (APP): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed grave concern over Israel’s decision to “take control of Gaza City”, his Spokesperson said in a statement on Friday.

The announcement following an Israeli cabinet meeting “marks a dangerous escalation and risks deepening the already catastrophic consequences for millions of Palestinians, and could further endanger more lives, including of the remaining hostages,” it said.

The statement noted that Palestinians in Gaza continue to endure a humanitarian catastrophe of horrific proportions.

The UN chief warned that this further escalation will result in additional forced displacement, killings and massive destruction, compounding the unimaginable suffering of the population.

He reiterated his urgent appeal for a permanent ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian access across Gaza, and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.

“The Secretary-General once again strongly urges the Government of Israel to abide by its obligations under international law,” the statement continued.

Guterres recalled that in an Advisory Opinion last July, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) declared that Israel is under an obligation to cease immediately all new settlement activities, to evacuate all settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and to bring to an end its unlawful presence there as rapidly as possible.

“There will be no sustainable solution to this conflict without an end to this unlawful occupation and the achievement of a viable two-State solution,” the statement concluded, stressing that “Gaza is and must remain an integral part of a Palestinian State.”

In Geneva, the UN’s top human rights official emphasized on Friday that the Israeli Government must not pursue a complete takeover of the besieged Gaza Strip.

“A complete military takeover of the occupied Gaza Strip must be immediately halted,” Volker Turk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, demanded.

The development runs contrary to international law, Turk continued, referring to a ruling of the International Court of Justice that Israel must end its occupation and achieve a two-State solution giving Palestinians the right to self-determination.

UN summit ends with bold plan to help landlocked developing countries achieve sustainable development

0

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 08 (APP): The Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries wrapped up Friday in Awaza, Turkmenistan, with delegates adopting a landmark political declaration aimed at speeding up sustainable development and boosting resilience in 32 nations that lack direct access to the sea, according to the U.N.

Held under the theme ‘Driving Progress Through Partnerships’, the four-day forum known as LLDC3 brought together Heads of State, senior UN officials, development partners and private sector leaders to tackle persistent challenges faced by LLDCs, including high trade costs, inadequate infrastructure, and vulnerability to climate change.

Anchored by the Awaza Programme of Action for 2024–2034, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly last year, the new ‘Awaza Declaration’ outlines a unified strategy across five priority areas:

— Structural economic transformation;
— Trade and regional integration;
— Transport and infrastructure;
— Climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction; and,
— Mobilizing finance and partnerships.

“The Awaza Declaration marks a turning point. It is a blueprint for action, not just words,” said Under Secretary-General Rabab Fatima, a former Bangladeshi diplomat.

“With targeted investments in infrastructure, trade facilitation, and climate resilience, we can unlock the potential of LLDCs and ensure no one is left behind.”

Ms Fatima, who also serves as the UN High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS), said the conference would be remembered as a defining moment in the LLDC journey, ushering in a new era of bold partnerships and decisive action.

“It is this spirit of solidarity, partnership, and shared purpose that will carry us forward. A future where we are not divided by geography, but connected through ideas, trade and innovation,” she said.

“Let us make the promise of ‘land-linked’ not only a phrase but a new way of life, the UN stands ready to support this decade of delivery,” she added.

The Declaration calls for increased investments from multilateral development banks, stronger South-South cooperation, and broader inclusion of LLDC interests in global trade and climate agendas.

It also emphasizes the importance of monitoring implementation and ensuring that LLDCs themselves lead the process, coordinated by UN-OHRLLS.

As host country, Turkmenistan presented several initiatives aligned with the Conference’s goals, including the Global Atlas for Sustainable Transport Connectivity, the Global Hydrogen Energy Transition Programme, and the Caspian Environmental Initiative.

“The Awaza Declaration reflects our shared vision of partnership and progress,” said Gurbanguly Malikgulyyewic Berdimuhamedow, National Leader of the Turkmen People and Chairman of the People’s Council of Turkmenistan.

“Together – transit countries, development partners, and the private sector – we can overcome geographical constraints and build sustainable prosperity for our peoples.”

The Awaza Declaration represents a major step forward for LLDCs and a renewed symbol of global solidarity, turning a geographical disadvantage into a shared advantage.

Implementation will be tracked by the UN General Assembly through annual LLDC ministerial meetings.

At a wrap-up press briefing, Aksoltan Ataeva, Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the United Nations, said that for his country, “hosting LLDC3 is not only a significant political event, but it also reflects Turkmenistan’s foreign policy philosophy: to be a bridge, not a barrier.”

UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, Dmitry Shlapachenko, told UN News, an international media website, that the Conference was especially important for the region, bringing together several Central Asian heads of state.

Global partnerships matter – but real cooperation starts with neighbours.

Shlapachenko shared an example cited by the UN Secretary-General in meetings with Central Asian leaders:

“Before Portugal and Spain joined the European Union, trade between them was minimal. But once they became part of the EU, 40 per cent of all goods exported by Portugal went to Spain. This improved life for the people of both countries. I think it’s very important to keep this in mind when we talk about Central Asia.”

“There is still a lot to be done here, but we are moving in the right direction,” he added.

UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan Sabine Machl noted that UN country teams in Central Asia regularly meet to coordinate their work. Uzbekistan, one of only two double landlocked countries in the world (alongside Liechtenstein), faces unique challenges – but also opportunities.

“As the United Nations country team in Uzbekistan, for the next five years, what we want to do is to harness the demographic dividend by investing in the people of Uzbekistan,” she said.

“That’s our one strategic priority. Because Uzbekistan has a very young population – 60 per cent of the population is under 30 years old.”

On Friday, Awaza – nestled on the shores of the Caspian Sea, the world’s largest inland body of water – bid farewell to its guests with a ceremonial lowering of the UN and Turkmenistan flags, which had been raised at the start of the week.

“Awaza will be remembered as a defining moment for the journey of LLDCs – not only for the great success of the Conference itself, but as the beginning of a new era of ambitious partnerships and decisive action,” said Ms. Fatima, wrapping up the forum.

The Third UN Conference on Least Developed Countries opened in Awaza, Turkmenistan, on Tuesday, 5 August.

Govt launches “Agri Stack” plan to digitize Pakistan’s farming sector

0
ISLAMABAD, Aug 08 (APP): The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT), in partnership with the Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR), the Land Information & Management System (LIMS) and the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), held a high-level consultation on Friday titled “Agri Stack – Building Digital Infrastructure for Pakistan’s Agricultural Future.”
The session convened senior representatives from federal and provincial governments, agri-tech startups, telcos, fintechs, international development partners, farmer associations and academia, both in person and online, to align on a shared vision for Pakistan’s agricultural digitization.
Addressing the event, Federal Minister for IT & Telecom, Ms Shaza Fatima Khawaja, highlighted that the Agri Stack aims to overcome deep-rooted structural challenges in agriculture, including fragmented data, lack of farmer IDs and credit history, inefficient subsidy delivery and weak market access.
“The Agri Stack will enable verified farmer identities, land data integration, precision advisory and efficient delivery of services like subsidies, crop insurance, and credit. This is the architecture for an inclusive and tech-driven agricultural transformation under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Digital Nation Pakistan, in collaboration with Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC),” she noted.
DG LIMS, Maj General (R) M Ayub Ahsan Bhatti also addressed the platform and highlighted the significance concentrated by this momentous initiative. He specified that Agri-Stack/PAKGROW is an exceptional concept that will innovate the Agricultural Arena of Pakistan by transforming and improving the lives of small farmers and convening policymaking.
CEO LIMS, Dr M Waqar Yasin, accentuated that LIMS, being the technical backbone of the initiative, will serve as the Central Agency and National Agri Database for Pakistan by amalgamating data from multiple streams to generate Farm Specific information relevant to cater to the needs of key stakeholders.
CEO Ignite, Rafique Ahmed Buriro, supported the Federal Minister’s and DG LIMS’ remarks and reaffirmed the commitment to building open, secure, and scalable digital infrastructure, positioning Agri Stack as the backbone of sustainable and innovative agri-solutions across the country.
Foundational components include farmer digital IDs and registries, consent-based data exchange, trusted payment rails, satellite-driven crop intelligence, and digital market platforms.
The consultation aimed to align stakeholders on governance and fast-track implementation through LIMS. Participants endorsed the formation of a Steering Committee co-chaired by MoITT and MNFSR, a Technical Working Group on data and cybersecurity and pilot squads from the public and private sectors.
Over the next 12–18 months, the initiative will prioritize use cases such as smart input subsidies, weather-indexed crop insurance, credit access through alternative data, and market linkages through LIMS. The session concluded with a clear roadmap for establishing working groups, launching 3–4 pilot projects and setting measurable milestones for a digitally empowered agricultural future.
The Agri Stack represents a critical step in reimagining agriculture as a digitally enabled ecosystem, empowering farmers, enhancing transparency and boosting economic resilience. The Ministry of IT reaffirmed its commitment to driving innovation and collaboration for a sustainable agricultural future.

CMPak ensures uninterrupted services despite extreme weather

0
ISLAMABAD, Aug 08 (APP):CMPak, one of Pakistan’s leading telecommunications providers, has maintained uninterrupted nationwide network operations amid a series of extreme weather events, including heat waves, windstorms, hailstorms, and heavy rainfall.
This remarkable performance underscores CMPak’s commitment to resilient connectivity and is powered by its strategic collaboration with Huawei, leveraging cutting-edge microwave backhaul technology.
In recent weeks, cities such as Lahore, Islamabad, and Bahawalpur have experienced intensified urban heat island (UHI) effects, triggering violent windstorms that led to building collapses, tree falls, and flight disruptions.
Despite these conditions, CMPak’s microwave transmission links—supported by Huawei’s Intelligent Beam Tracking (IBT) antenna technology—achieved a reliability rate of 99.995%, preventing potential regional communication breakdowns.
Huawei’s IBT antenna system dynamically tracks and adjusts microwave beams in real time, compensating for tower swaying and structural warping caused by extreme weather. Unlike conventional microwave links that suffer from signal interruptions due to antenna misalignment, the IBT solution ensures high-performance connectivity even under the most challenging environmental conditions.
“Every emergency call and location message during a crisis can save lives,” said a CMPak spokesperson. “Our joint innovation pilot with Huawei has proven that advanced microwave technologies are not only viable but essential for maintaining lifeline communications in Pakistan’s evolving climate landscape.”

Only 48.4% of Pakistani children exclusively breastfed: WHO

0

ISLAMABAD, Aug 08 (APP): As World Breastfeeding Week 2025 comes to an end, the World Health Organization (WHO) alerted that only 48.4% per cent of infants under six months are exclusively breastfed in Pakistan, well below the World Health Assembly target of 60 per cent by 2030.

This shortfall results in losses of US$2.8 billion annually due to the negative impact of low breastfeeding rates on public health, according to data from Nutrition International’s Cost of Not Breastfeeding Tool.

In Pakistan, low breastfeeding rates also trigger over 33,700 deaths, 6.6 million child diarrhoea cases and 2.7 million school years lost annually, according to the same data from Nutrition International.

In addition, the country’s expenditure on breastmilk substitutes, which are less healthy for infants, exceeds US$888 million per year.

Under the international theme “Prioritise breastfeeding: Create sustainable support systems” and following a recent global joint statement by WHO and UNICEF, WHO reiterated that breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure a baby’s health, development and survival in the earliest stages of life.

It acts as their first vaccine, protecting against multiple diseases such as diarrhoea and pneumonia.

Investing in informing and supporting all mothers to prioritise breastfeeding is investing in a healthier Pakistan. WHO will continue to fully support Pakistan and its partners to promote breastfeeding, which is the safest and best way to protect a baby’s health and, in addition, generates US$35 in economic returns for every dollar invested,” said WHO Representative in Pakistan Dr Dapeng Luo.

In partnership with the Government of Pakistan and partners, since January 2024, WHO has promoted breastfeeding by providing counselling to over 172,000 mothers in 157 nutrition stabilization centres (NSCs) across the country.

The Organization also supported initiatives such as the training of more than 700 workers – including doctors, nurses and LHVs – the conceptualization of the Sindh Protection and Promotion of Breast-Feeding and Young Child Nutrition Act (2023), the establishment of lactation management rooms in NSCs, Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) guidelines and training packages, and trainings on the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI).
