Pakistan, Bangladesh to boost trade, energy cooperation, industrial linkage

ISLAMABAD, Aug 4 (APP): Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan met with the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Pakistan, Md. Iqbal Hussain Khan, to explore deeper bilateral cooperation in trade, energy, logistics, and industrial linkages.
During the meeting, High Commissioner Khan shared insights from his recent visits to Pakistan’s industrial hubs, noting enthusiastic engagement from local business chambers, said a release issued here on Monday.
The discussions focused on Bangladesh’s growing industrial needs, particularly for Pakistani coal and limestone to support its power generation and soda ash production.
Key points of discussion included boosting agricultural trade, particularly Pakistan’s imports of pineapples from Bangladesh and potential exports of mangoes, pending final technical approvals.
The discussions also covered opportunities in textiles, mineral exports like high-quality limestone from Sindh, and Halal-certified meat products, with both sides committing to address logistical challenges and streamline business visa processes to facilitate smoother trade exchanges.
Minister Jam Kamal emphasized the strategic potential of the relationship, stating: “Through focused collaboration in energy, logistics and food security, Pakistan and Bangladesh can develop a transformative economic partnership that benefits our entire region.”
The meeting concluded with commitments to establish sector-specific business linkages and streamline trade mechanisms in the coming months.

CJP visits SHC, emphasizes citizen-centric judicial infrastructure

ISLAMABAD, Aug 04 (APP): The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi, accompanied by Justice Junaid Ghaffar, Chief Justice of the High Court of Sindh, and Judges Justice Zafar Rajput and Justice Iqbal Kalhoro, held a meeting today with the District and Sessions Judges of the Karachi Division at the Sindh High Court building.
According to a press release issued here Monday, the Chief Justice of the High Court of Sindh apprised the Chief Justice of Pakistan regarding the proposed construction of a state-of-the-art Judicial Complex in Karachi, comprising 125 fully equipped courts along with all requisite amenities. The project is intended to address the growing needs of the judicial system in Karachi and is expected to commence shortly.
The Chief Justice of Pakistan welcomed the initiative and underscored the importance of sustainable, scalable, and forward-looking infrastructure planning. He stressed that future forecasting must be integrated into the design to ensure the long-term viability of the complex. In this regard, he recommended that structured consultations be held with all relevant stakeholders—including judges and members of the district bar—to gather practical input keeping in view the technicalities so that a refined proposal may be placed before the government for timely execution.
Highlighting the ongoing efforts to automate Pakistan’s justice sector, the Chief Justice further emphasized that the development of judicial infrastructure must follow a citizen-centric approach. In this context, he called for the inclusion of a modern Facilitation Centre within the Judicial Complex to assist litigants and the public at large, ensuring improved access to information and services focused on facilitating litigants, lawyers and general public.
The visit reaffirmed the judiciary’s commitment to institutional development, participatory planning, and the delivery of accessible and efficient justice.

President condoles with PM on death of Mian Shahid Shafi

ISLAMABAD, Aug 4 (APP): President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday expressed his condolences to Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on the death of his cousin Mian Shahid Shafi.

The president arrived here at the Prime Minister’s House and held meeting with the prime minister to offer fateha for the deceased, a Prime Minister’s Office news release said.

President Zardari prayed for the elevation of Mian Shahid’s ranks in the hereafter and his family for patience

President Asif Ali Zardari also contacted Javed Shafi, the elder brother of the late Mian Shahid Shafi, over the telephone and expressed his condolences.

PM directs early completion of advanced weather warning system in GB

GILGIT, Aug 04 (APP): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Monday directed early completion and functioning of an advanced weather warning system in Gilgit Baltistan.

Addressing the cheques distribution ceremony among the affected families of recent rains and floods, the prime minister said that being topped as the natural calamity hit country, Pakistan required preparedness to ward off damages and losses.

Citing damages and deaths caused by recent cloud burst triggering massive rains and floods in Gilgit Baltistan, the prime minister said that first of all, they required an advanced warning system, a robust system, which should have been installed here.

But for the last seven year, the subject remained confined to papers only, the prime minister observed and said in the last one and half year no progress was either made.

He said that the deadline over completion of the project would not be given even an hour extension.

The prime minister said that he was visiting Gilgit Baltistan, along with cabinet members, to express sympathy with the bereaved families and assured them that they would be rehabilitated and for this purpose, the federal government departments and the relevant departments in GB would work closely.

He referred to a policy framed during the year 2022 for compensation amount given to the families who suffered from human or other losses from the natural calamities in Gilgit Baltistan.

The prime minister said that he had directed the chairman NDMA to conduct mapping of the damages and submit a report in this regard, adding that he would visit the area in August.

He also announced Rs4 billion, on part of the federal government, for the purpose.

Moreover, he said, a 100 MW solar project which was announced by the federal government would start functioning in the current year to provide relief during winter months.

The prime minister further informed that inauguration of Daanish schools in Gilgit Baltistan would be laid soon from the federal government’s resources.

He said admission to these schools would be made on merit as these were not expenditures but investments on country’s youth who would serve as nation builders in the future.

Governor GB, ministers, federal ministers, chairman NDMA, federal and provincial officials and rain affected families members attended the ceremony.

Earlier, the prime minister distributed cheques containing compensation amount among the family members of the those who lost their loved ones in the recent rains and floods.

Chief Minister Gilgit Baltistan Haji Gulbar Khan, in his remarks, highlighted the damages, rescue and relief activities in Gilgit Balitistan after recent floods.

Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit Baltistan, and States and Frontier Regions Engineer Amir Muqam lauded the prime minister for his commitment and dedication to the public welfare projects.

He said contrary to past, now Gilgit Baltistan budget had been increased to Rs186 billion annually.

Indonesia targets 20 mln beneficiaries for free nutritious meal program by Aug. 17

JAKARTA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua/APP): Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has set a goal of providing free nutritious meals to 20 million people before the country’s Independence Day on Aug. 17, Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan said in a statement on Monday.

As of the end of July 2025, the program had reached 7,374,135 beneficiaries through 2,375 active community nutrition kitchens. The recipients include schoolchildren, toddlers, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, as well as students at Islamic boarding schools and other religious schools.

“This program is a comprehensive strategy to improve the quality of Indonesia’s human resources from an early age. If our children are healthy and intelligent, the future of the nation will be more secure,” Gunawan said.

Beyond its nutritional and health benefits, the free meal program also bolsters economic resilience by lowering household expenditures, creating millions of jobs, and stabilizing food prices through direct purchases from smallholder farmers.

PFA discards 1,610kg substandard meat

LAHORE, Aug 04 (APP): Punjab Food Authority (PFA) enforcement teams launched a rigorous crackdown on meat shops and suppliers in Lahore, discarding 1,610 kilograms of substandard meat and poultry, and registering two FIRs.
During the operation, PFA’s food safety teams inspected 42 meat shops and supplier vehicles, checking a total of 65,000 kilograms of meat. One accused was arrested and two violators were heavily fined for critical violations of food safety laws.
In one notable incident, the meat safety team recovered dead poultry from a vehicle (registration number LES-6569). The poultry was immediately seized and destroyed, and a First Information Report (FIR) was lodged against the driver, who was arrested on the spot.
PFA Director General Muhammad Asim Javaid said that poor hygiene conditions and the absence of valid medical certificates of food handlers were also observed at several locations. He emphasized that the supply of dead or diseased poultry is a serious criminal offense and that the PFA is committed to aligning the meat supply chain with international food safety standards.
He added that all available resources are being deployed to eradicate the adulteration mafia from Punjab. The DG urged citizens to avoid purchasing pre-slaughtered poultry and instead ensure meat is slaughtered in front of them.
The public is encouraged to report any violations through the PFA Helpline 1223.

Modern vocational training cornerstone of future prosperity: Nasir Mansoor Qureshi

ISLAMABAD, Aug 04 (APP): Nasir Mansoor Qureshi, President Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), has stressed the urgent need for Pakistan to invest heavily in vocational education and skills development to build a future-ready workforce capable of driving the country toward a new era of industrialization and economic prosperity.
Speaking to a gathering of trade and industry leaders at the Chamber House on Monday, alongside ICCI Senior Vice President Abdul Rehman Siddiqui, Qureshi emphasized that Pakistan’s demographic dividend can only be transformed into economic strength by equipping the youth with modern industrial and technological skills.
“Massive investment in skills, innovation, and adaptability is the need of the hour,” he said. “If we empower our young generation with future-ready capabilities, Pakistan can leap forward into a new industrial era.”
Appreciating the recent agreement signed between vocational training institutions of Pakistan and China, the ICCI President hailed the development as a “transformative journey” for the country’s youth.
He noted that the emerging fields of artificial intelligence, robotics, big data, and green technologies are rapidly replacing traditional jobs, and that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is poised to generate thousands of new opportunities requiring specialized skills.
Qureshi called on the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) to scale up its efforts to deliver high-impact skills training, not only to boost employment within the country but also to create a skilled workforce capable of earning valuable foreign exchange through overseas employment.
He further underlined that this is a pivotal moment for Pakistan’s economic future, urging both the public and private sectors to join hands in converting the country’s youth bulge into a youth boom.
As far as the ICCI is concerned, he concluded, “we are fully committed to this national cause and will continue to play our proactive role in building a skilled, innovative, and forward-looking workforce.”
