One million people died from Covid-19 in 2022: WHO

0

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 26 (APP): The World Health Organization (WHO), a Geneva-based UN agency, announced Thursday that a million people had died from Covid-19 in 2022, calling it a “tragic milestone” when all the tools existed to prevent deaths.
Nearly 6.45 million deaths have been reported to the WHO since the virus was first detected in China in late 2019.

“We cannot say we are learning to live with COVID-19 when one million people have died with COVID-19 this year alone, when we are two-and-a-half years into the pandemic and have all the tools necessary to prevent these deaths”, said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, speaking during his regular briefing from Geneva.

He again urged all governments to step up action to vaccinate all health workers, older persons, and others at highest risk, as part of efforts towards inoculating 70 per cent of the global population.

Tedros said he was pleased to see that some countries with the lowest vaccination rates are now gaining ground, especially in Africa.

In January, WHO and partners launched the COVID-19 Vaccine Delivery Partnership, focused mainly on the 34 countries that were at or below 10 per cent coverage. All but six are on the continent.

Today, only 10 countries still have less than 10 per cent coverage, most of which are facing humanitarian emergencies.

Although welcoming progress on coverage of high-priority groups, Tedros stressed that more must be done as one-third of the world’s population remains unvaccinated.
This includes two-thirds of health workers, and three-quarters of older persons in low-income countries.

“All countries at all income levels must do more to vaccinate those most at risk, to ensure access to life-saving therapeutics, to continue testing and sequencing, and to set tailored, proportionate policies to limit transmission and save lives. This is the best way to drive a truly sustainable recovery”, he said.

Meanwhile, intense Monkeypox transmission continues in the Americas region, although the number of cases globally fell by more than 20 per cent last week.

While most cases in the early stage of the outbreak were in Europe, with a smaller proportion in the Americas, the situation has now reversed.

Currently, less than 40 per cent of reported cases are in Europe and 60 per cent are in the Americas.

There are signs that the outbreak is slowing in Europe, Tedros reported, where a combination of effective public health measures, behaviour change, and vaccination, are helping to prevent transmission.

“However, in Latin America in particular, insufficient awareness or public health measures are combining with a lack of access to vaccines to fan the flames of the outbreak”, he said.

Tedros thanked vaccine manufacturer Bavarian Nordic, which on Wednesday signed an agreement with WHO’s Regional Office for the Americas to support access to its Monkeypox vaccine in Latin America and the Caribbean.

He expressed hope that the development will help to bring the outbreak under control in the region.

Key US lawmaker voices sympathy for flood-hit people in Pakistan

WASHINGTON, Aug 25 (APP):: A key US lawmaker has conveyed his deepest sympathies to the government and the people of Pakistan over the devastation caused by the recent floods and offered condolences over the loss of life resulting from the unprecedented monsoon rains across the country.

Adverse effects from erratic climate change call for greater collaboration to overcome this challenge, Congressman Gregory Meeks, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said during a meeting with Pakistan’s Ambassador to the U.S. Masood Khan on Thursday, according to a press release issued by the Pakistani embassy here.

The Pakistani envoy thanked Chairman Meeks for expressing solidarity with the flood victims, saying that the country was trying to deal with this natural catastrophe.
He also thanked for US financial assistance for the flood victims and disaster relief activities.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken had announced $1 million to build resilience against natural disasters in addition to $100,000 in immediate relief for the flood victims of Pakistan.
In their meeting, Masood Khan and Meeks also discussed parliamentary exchanges, security cooperation and economic partnership between the two countries.

Congressman Meeks appreciated Pakistan’s commendable role in helping the United States with safe evacuations after 15th August 2021, when Taliban swept to power in Afghanistan.

There was broad agreement on taking Pak-US ties to a higher level, the Ambassador said in a tweet.

Chairman Meeks has had a close association with Pakistan and has interacted with Pakistani leadership while holding different positions in the US Congress. He has held the position of House Foreign Affairs Committee since 2020. As a Democrat, he has been consecutively elected to the House of Representatives since 1998.
He visited Pakistan in November 2020, accompanied by Congressman Ami Bera. During the visit, the delegation met Pakistani parliamentary and government leadership and members of civil society.

There is a broad consensus across political spectrum in the United States to strengthen Pak-US relations by promoting trade and investment and people-to-people exchanges, the press release said.

Separately, Ambassador Masood Khan also received U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom (USIRF), Rashad Hussain.

In his tweet, Ambassador Masood Khan said, (It) was a pleasure to receive Ambassador Rashad Hussain and discuss with him human and religious rights as well as interfaith harmony.

The first Muslim to be nominated by the Biden Administration as the Ambassador-at-Large for USIRF, Ambassador Rashad Hussain has been an ardent supporter of interfaith harmony and dialogue.

JKNF condemns India’s nefarious attempt to change demography of Muslim-majority IIOJK

0

MIRPUR (AJK): Aug 25 (APP): Jammu Kashmir National Front [JKNF] working committee meeting held in occupied Srinagar late Wednesday night took serious notice of the Indian government’s designs aimed at changing the demography of the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to a statement issued late Thursday, the working committee members, while terming the Indian move as a violation of the UNSC resolutions, urged the international community, in particular the UN, to take effective notice of the matter and hold the Indian government accountable.

Expressing their grave concern over the continuous detention of the party chairman, Nayeem Khan, the participants of the meeting said that Khan was being punished for his unprecedented role in the freedom struggle. Terming his detention as a violation of basic human rights, they said, “ Nayeem Ahmed Khan is a strong proponent of Kashmiris’ right to self-determination has, he spent his whole life in advocating Kashmiris’ just cause and owing to his political beliefs he had to spent a major portion of his life in Indian jails”.

Terming allegations leveled against him as a pack of lies, the front spokesman Shafiq-ur-Rehman said that despite the passage of five years Indian authorities have miserably failed to produce a single piece of evidence in the court of law. Appreciating the incarcerated party chairman’s perseverance and commitment to Kashmir cause, he said, “Despite falling health condition Nayeem Ahmed Khan stands firm on his principled political stance on Kashmir issue”.

According to the spokesman, the working committee members acknowledged the valor and persistence of their incarcerated leader and said that Nayeem Khan remains a powerful guiding force even being behind the bars.

“The working committee conferred ‘prisoner of conscience’ accolade to its jailed chairman”, the spokesman said.

The participants of the meeting also prayed for the safety and good health of Nayeem Khan and other Kashmiri prisoners who have been languishing in jails within and outside Kashmir.

The participants of the meeting also reiterated their pledge to uphold the martyrs’ mission and take the ongoing struggle to its logical conclusion.

The meeting also urged the world community to shun its policy of indifference towards Kashmiris and hold India accountable for the crimes its forces have been committing in the bleeding vale of Kashmir.

0

ISLAMABAD, Aug 25 (APP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Thursday ordered immediate distribution of cash assistance among the flood affectees and also directed the ministries of Economic Affairs and Finance to come up with a comprehensive strategy to deliver the aid announced by the international institutions and organizations during the donors conference.

Separate committees headed by the federal ministers and allied leaders were set up on the issues of clean drinking water, tents, mosquito nets, medicines and medical aid and rations. The notifications for the committees would be issued tonight.

The prime minister also decided to call a meeting of the ambassadors in Islamabad to take them into confidence on the loss of humans and material during the recent rains and floods. The envoys would be informed in detail about the government’s rescue and assistance operation.

He directed the Flood Relief Committee to immediately seek help of the Pakistan Army for the rescue of flood affectees and relief operation and for organizing the relief activities.
The DGMO should be immediately taken into confidence, and the rescue and relief operations of the government and the operations of the army should be coordinated and organized as a single operation, he stressed.

Nation should unite to cope with natural calamity: Khawaja Asif

0

ISLAMABAD, Aug 25 (APP): Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Thursday said the whole nation should unite at this hard time of natural calamity and play their role for relief and rehabilitation of flood-affected people by setting aside their political differences.

Talking to private news channel, he said the federal government was diligently performing their duties to provide relief to the flood-hit people whereas there was more capacity to bring improvement in the relief activities.

The torrential rains had wreaked havoc in the country and atleast 30 districts of Sindh, almost the entire Balochistan, and south Punjab were facing an unprecedented humanitarian disaster.

Khwaja Asif said Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif is likely to visit the flood-affected areas of Sindh, Balochistan and South Punjab on Friday a day after his arrival from Qatar to review the rescue and relief operation.

The abnormal devastating monsoon rains in the country caused loss of livestock and destruction of crops that will increase inflation and bring food insecurity.

He said Imran Khan is using all the resources of flood-hit province for his own propose and he has no concern about the flood-affected people but he was busy in holding public rallies just for his own vested interest.

The two most populated provinces were in facing political and economic instability due to stubborn behaviour of Imran Khan and he was mercilessly wasting the resources of the province for filling cases against the PDM leaderships.

One million Rohingya Muslims remain sheltered in Bangladesh, UN Chief says, as he pushes for solution

0

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 25 (APP):: UNITED NATIONS, Aug 25 (APP): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, marking five years since tens of thousands of Rohingya Muslims fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh to escape a brutal military crackdown, Thursday urged the international community to seek comprehensive, durable and inclusive solutions to end their suffering.

Some one million refugees remain in the vast camps of Cox’s Bazar, without any immediate prospect of being able to return home, with 150,000 Muslim Rohingya still “confined in camps” in their native Rakhine state in Myanmar, said a statement issued on behalf of the UN chief.

Following the military coup of February 2021, the humanitarian, human rights and security situation in Myanmar itself has rapidly deteriorated, making conditions even less conducive to refugees’ return, it was pointed out.

“The secretary-general notes the unflagging aspirations for an inclusive future among the country’s many ethnic, and religious groups and underlines that the full and effective participation of the Rohingya people is an inherent part of a Myanmar-led solution to the crisis,” the statement said.

“Greater humanitarian and development access for the United Nations and its partners to affected areas is crucial. Perpetrators of all international crimes committed in Myanmar should be held accountable. Justice for victims will contribute to a sustainable and inclusive political future for the country and its people.”

Speaking in Geneva, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Michelle Bachelet, said Myanmar’s Tatmadaw forces had maintained and even escalated operations against civilians in residential areas in southeast, northwest and central regions, 18 months since they overthrew the democratically-elected government.

The use of air power and artillery against villages and residential areas had “intensified”, the UN human rights chief said, while also warning that recent spikes of violence in Rakhine – the historic former home of ethnic Rohingya – could upset the relative calm in the region, and that the last fairly stable area of the country may not avoid a resurgence of armed conflict.

Rohingya communities have frequently been caught between the Tatmadaw and rebel Arakan Army fighters or have been targeted directly in operations. Over 14 million need humanitarian assistance.

UN Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar, Noeleen Heyzer, said during her four-day mission to Bangladesh to highlight the poignant anniversary, that “we cannot let this become a forgotten crisis”.

In what were described as “productive discussions”, she thanked Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her leadership and expressed the UN’s deep appreciation to the people and the Government of Bangladesh for their immense contribution.

“The generosity of Bangladesh and host communities towards Rohingya refugees in their time of need conveys a critical need for greater international and regional commitment to burden share and ensure that the Rohingya do not become forgotten,” Special Envoy Heyzer said.

“I will continue to advocate for greater leadership of countries in the region in supporting Bangladesh and leveraging their influence with Myanmar to create conducive conditions for the voluntary, safe and dignified return of refugees.”

She stressed that Rohingya people continued to undertake perilous land and sea journeys that exposed them to criminal exploitation, including human trafficking and gender-based violence, and that it was ultimately Myanmar’s responsibility to establish conducive conditions for the voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable return to Myanmar of all refugees and those forcibly displaced.

The UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Pramilla Patten, also urged greater international action, and for countries to stand in solidarity with the Rohingya survivors of grave international crimes to ensure access to justice and redress, which was foundational for recovery and peace.

“In 2017 and 2018 during my visits to the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, I had witnessed firsthand the visible scars on women and girls from the sexual violence they endured. All of the women I spoke with said they wanted to see the perpetrators punished. They all – without exception – demanded justice,” she added.

Since 2010, the annual reports of the secretary-general on conflict-related sexual violence have documented patterns of sexual violence crimes perpetrated against the Rohingya, and in 2019 the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar (IIMM) concluded that “rape and sexual violence are part of a deliberate strategy to intimidate, terrorize or punish a civilian population, and are used as a tactic of war” – one of the hallmarks of the military operations conducted by the Tatmadaw.

She said momentum was growing in Myanmar for leaders to recognize the Rohingya as an ethnic nationality, entitled to citizenship and other collective and individual rights, and to ensure accountability and reparations. “This encouraging shift means no more that the people of Myanmar are confronting history and are willing to work towards lasting solutions to build peace and reconciliation.

“We must heed the call of the people of Myanmar and work collectively towards ensuring justice which has been delayed for far too long. I reiterate my call for enhanced efforts by the international community to continue supporting the dignity and well-being of the Rohingya community and to ensure that perpetrators will be held accountable and that survivors will have effective access to reparations and redress. I call for the collective search of lasting solutions for one of the most persecuted people on earth,” the Special Representative added.
