Advanced technology on BCI showcased at Tiankai Higher Education Innovation Park

BEIJING, June 29 (APP): Humans controlling machines with their minds may sound like stuff of science fiction movies.

Imagine if you could prepare for your next meeting using only your thoughts – a scenario that might soon become a reality thanks to the development of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs).

Through BCI technology, such miracle is no longer the future; it is here and now. Advanced technology on BCI was showcased at the Tiankai Higher Education Innovation Park of the 14th Annual Meeting of the New Champions (AMNC) held in Tianjin, China from June 26 to 29.

The Neuro Engineering Team of Tianjin University, China, drawing on the neuroplasticity mechanism, has developed the “Shengong” rehabilitation robot based on brain-machine interface technology for patients with limb movement dysfunction. Shengong, the world’s first neuromodulated powered exoskeleton system, is applied for the neurological rehabilitation of patients with stroke and other lower limb dysfunction.

CEN learns that the system can accurately decode the patient’s motor intention and transmit it to external feedback devices, thus forming a closed-loop brain-machine-body pathway, thereby effectively solving the problems, namely poor initiative, and long treatment period in traditional rehabilitation.

Also Brain Talker, the world’s irst dedicated codec chip for brain-computer interface, wowed visitors on site. It is capable of decoding instructions precisely and effectively and realizing fast communication, and strong interaction, with completely independent intellectual property rights.

“At present, the system has been applied to clinical research in many hospitals,” the team noted, adding that their other BCI products like brain-controlled typing system and intelligent diagnosis robot for depression turned out to be highly effective.

BCI is a human-computer interaction device that converts nervus centralis information into commands that can control external software or hardware, such as a computer or robotic arm. BCI is often used as an assisted living device for people with motor or sensory impairments.
The future is now. Technology is changing the world. Are you ready?

World’s first 16-MW wind turbine installed in China

World's first 16-MW wind turbine installed in China

BEIJING, June 29 (APP):The world’s first 16-megawatt offshore wind turbine was successfully installed in southeast China’s Fujian Province on Wednesday.

The turbine, about 35 kilometers away from the shoreline, boasts the world’s largest per-unit capacity. At full wind speed, the wind turbine can generate 34.2 kWh of power after rotating a full turn.

Its annual power output, which is estimated to average over 66 million kWh, can meet the annual demand of 36,000 families of three, save 22,000 tonnes of standard coal, and reduce 54,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.Â
Due to the turbine’s size, the installation process posed significant challenges. Additionally, the wind-exposed surface area of the turbine increases with each added blade. As a result, according to the project manager, the third blade had to be installed without interruption to ensure the overall stability of the structure.

“(Prior to the installation of the blades) the wind-exposed surface area of the tower barrel and cabin is relatively small and stable. As additional blades are installed, the wind-exposed surface area increases, resulting in an asymmetrical structure from a force perspective after the first two blades are added,” said Cheng Xiping, project manager of the offshore wind plant under the China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd.

“Therefore, the wind turbine structure will only achieve its most stable state once all three blades are installed,” Cheng added.

The successful installation and application of the wind turbine is an important milestone for the development of China’s offshore wind power industry to far-reaching offshore innovation, said Lei Zengjuan, executive director of the Fujian Branch of China Three Gorges Corporation.

He said the significance of the turbine is reflected in the improvement of single-machine power generation capacity, the improvement of efficiency of China’s offshore wind power construction, and the reduction of the cost of electricity.

“More importantly, it realizes the core technology breakthrough of China’s offshore wind power industry chain and the industrialization and localization of the country’s offshore wind power equipment manufacturing, and further promotes the sustainable development of China’s offshore wind power industry,” Lei said.

After the completion of the installation, the turbine will enter the commissioning and test phase, and it’s expected to be connected to the grid in early July.

Pakistan strongly condemns despicable act of public burning of Holy Quran in Sweden

ISLAMABAD, Jun 29 (APP):Pakistan on Thursday strongly condemned the despicable act of public burning of the Holy Quran outside a mosque in Sweden on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.

Such wilful incitement to discrimination, hatred and violence cannot be justified under pretext of freedom of expression and protest, a Foreign Office Spokesperson said in a statement.

Under international law, states are duty bound to prohibit any advocacy of religious hatred, leading to incitement of violence.

The recurrence of such Islamophobic incidents during the last few months in the West calls into serious question the legal framework which permits such hate-driven actions.

“We reiterate that the right to freedom of expression and opinion does not provide a license to stoke hatred and sabotage inter-faith harmony,” the statement said.

It added Pakistan’s concerns about the incident are being conveyed to Sweden. “We once again urge that both the international community and the national governments must undertake credible and concrete measures to prevent the rising incidents of xenophobia, Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred,” it added.
