White House blasts harassment of Pakistani origin reporter who questioned Modi about human rights

WASHINGTON, Jun 28 (APP):The White House has condemned the online harassment of Sabrina Siddiqui, an American journalist of Pakistani origin who asked India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi about his Hindu nationalist government’s human rights record when he visited the White House last week.

“We’re aware of the reports of that harassment. It’s unacceptable, and we absolutely condemn any harassment of journalists anywhere, under any circumstances,” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said about the online harassment of Ms. Siddiqui, who works for The Wall Street Journal, a leading financial newspaper. Sabrina’s mother is a Pakistani and her father was born in India but raised in Pakistan.

Referring to Ms. Siddiqui’s online harassment by pro-Modi Indians, Kirby said, “That’s just completely unacceptable, and it’s antithetical to the principles of democracy that … were on display last week during the state visit.”

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that the Biden administration is “committed to the freedom of the press, which is why we held a (joint) press conference last Thursday” with US President Joe Biden and Modi, during the Indian premier’s official two-day state visit.

During the press conference, Ms. Siddiqui asked the Hindu leader what steps he was taking “to improve the rights of Muslims and other minorities” in India and “to uphold free speech.”

“Our Constitution and our government and we have proved democracy can deliver. When I say deliver, regardless of caste, creed, religion, gender – there is absolutely no space for any discrimination (in my government),” Modi said in response.

Before becoming prime minister, Modi was banned from the U.S. for the role he played in the 2002 Gujarat riots, in which some 2,000 people, most of them Muslims, were killed. Since taking office in 2014, he’s faced criticism for aspects of his human rights record, including censoring journalists and stripping autonomy from the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir.

Following her exchange with Modi, Ms. Siddiqui has been the target of online abuse, mainly from the prime minister’s allies in India.

The Wall Street Journal responded to the attacks in a statement Monday calling Siddiqui “a respected journalist known for her integrity and unbiased reporting. This harassment of our reporter is unacceptable, and we strongly condemn it.”

The South Asian Journalists Association also defended Siddiqui. “We want to express our continued support of our colleague @SabrinaSiddiqui who, like many South Asian and female journalists, is experiencing harassment for simply doing her job,” the group said on Twitter.

AI to be inevitable trend in developing countries

AI to be inevitable trend in developing countries

BEIJING, June 27 (APP): Technology continues to surpass our wildest imaginations with advances such as artificial intelligence, big data and the metaverse.

Artificial intelligence is creating a huge potential to develop in developing countries.

According to Mrs. Yajie Hao, director of Qingbo Metaverse Laboratory, there are no more than five companies making humanoid robots in China.

Humanoid robots incorporate advanced technologies such as high-performance servo driver and control software systems, motion control algorithms, and vision algorithms, among others. With a machine-muscle ratio of more than 50%, they can mimic most human facial movements.

The production of a humanoid robot typically takes 20 days or longer, depending on its capabilities, CEN reported on Tuesday.

Many humanoid robots can now perform a variety of actions, such as pouring coffee or water, providing assistance as a bank guide, and displaying a variety of clothing for customers.

As for the core technology on them, humanoid robots in China have gone beyond already top high-tech enterprises in the world today. Said Wang Lei, general manager of Qingbao Robot. And even more advanced than a Tesla Bot.

Wang cited the example of Tesla, which has 40 rotational angles on a single Tesla Bot. With comparison, our humanoid robots have 52 rotatable angles, which means our robots are more flexible. Wang Lei explained.

Independently researching and developing control systems and core elements on a single robot is also a great advantage in terms of production costs for domestic humanoid robots. Now we have received many purchase intentions from neighboring countries, Wang added.

According to Wang, AI in developing countries will form a blue ocean and become an inevitable trend in social development.

As for humanoid robots, the more delicate the work, the more difficult, and thus the higher the requirements for the robot hand.

For some developing countries, the restoration of human hands after the war is a big issue. Now with robot arms and hands, ordinary people can regain convenience and dignified life. Wang noted that their team has now applied to the Shanghai Federation of Disabled People for the application of the robotic hand.

In agriculture, the flexible arms and dexterous hands of humanoid robots, combined with robotic vision systems, can perform very detailed tasks such as picking tea leaves and grapes. And, unlike humans, who cannot work all the time and need to rest, eat and drink, robotic pickers are extremely efficient and can work non-stop 24 hours a day. In this way, a robot can do six times the work of a human per day.

In the energy sector, some jobs are in high-temperature, high-pressure and high-risk environments such as thermal power generation and nuclear power plants. Humanoid robots have strong resistance to risky environments and can continuously, thus they can be competent in harsh working environments.

Wang Lei explained. Developing countries also need to maximize production efficiency, and human life is vitally important. In the risky scenario of energy, we also need to cherish life and replace humans with robots.

Wang gave an optimistic outlook on intelligent robots.

Pak-China collaboration to promote Pakistan’s pharmaceutical development

Pak-China collaboration to promote Pakistan's pharmaceutical development

BEIJING, June 27 (APP): China has equalized or surpassed the developed nations’ pharma standards over a period of time.

With 30 years of experience in cooperation with China, our progress is accompanied by the dividend of the development of China’s pharmaceutical industry,”highlighted Waheed Ahmed, Chief Executive of Shaigan Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd at the CPHI & PMEC China.

As Asia’s leading pharmaceutical show for trading, knowledge sharing and networking, CPHI & PMEC China spans all industry sectors along the pharmaceutical supply chain including APIs, excipients, finished dosage, natural exacts, biophama & CDMOs, animal health&feed, medical supplies, etc, China Economic Net (CEN) reported.

Waheed, who has been attending the expo since 1995, noted that CPHI China is becoming more and more informative due to the major R&D work being carried out in China. China, Pakistan’s largest trading partner and the largest producer of API, attaches importance to investing in chemical labs and training scientists. China’s key technologies are developing rapidly, and the quality of pharmaceutical and mechanical products is reliable, he explained.

“This time I am exploring future technologies and newly developed products, especially in biosimilers and new drug delivery systems,” Waheed mentioned, “meeting my over 15 collaborative partners who are all old friends at the expo and witnessing their growth is always a pleasure and opportunity to tap new business range.”

At the expo, Jack, head of a pharmaceutical packaging machinery manufacturing enterprise integrating R&D, production and sales service told Gwadar Pro that Pakistan has a huge pharmaceutical market of 250 million people, making it one of the most promising pharmaceutical consumer markets.

The industry has grown rapidly in recent years and its production capacity has greatly increased, as can be told from the fact that the equipment they provide has been upgraded from small and low-speed machinery to large and high-speed machinery.

Jack said, “We provide guidance on the use and maintenance of the entire production line to help Pakistan master advanced packaging technology. Pakistan’s pharmaceutical industry has a good foundation for cooperation with China.
We are in the process of selecting local partners in Pakistan for further cooperation.”

According to the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, the Pakistani pharmaceutical industry plays a prominent role in the domestic market. The value of the sector was estimated at $3.29 billion, growing in double digits in the last five years.

Although Pakistan has established itself progressively as a manufacturing platform for pharmaceuticals, the country remains a small player in the global scenario. A significant untapped export potential exists in the exports of pharmaceuticals from Pakistan.

Huang Hong, who supplies raw materials and pharmaceutical equipment to Pakistan, said that Pakistan is encouraging the pharmaceutical industry to gain a foothold at home, which is also the direction of his efforts. They are turning to technical cooperation to boost exports from Pakistan’s pharmaceutical industry.

Learning from China’s experience has driven his company to expand its export range to South Asia, Asia Pacific, Central Asia, Africa, Waheed said, adding that they are also collaborating with China in the high-tech pharmaceutical RND sector to develop more affordable products.

The 20th Pharma Asia is scheduled to be held in Karachi in September. Waheed welcomed the participation of Chinese pharmaceutical companies in the expo to learn more about the situation of the pharmaceutical industry in Pakistan and the investment environment and advantages in the country.
