UN calls journalist Arshad Sharif’s death ‘tragic’, urges probe

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 24 (APP): The United Nations Monday called for a thorough investigation of the circumstances in which senior Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif was shot and killed in Kenya.

“I saw the tragic reports about the incident,” UN Secretary-General’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in response to a question at the regular noon briefing at the UN Headquarters in New York.

He hoped the Kenyan authorities would investigate the circumstance in which journalist Sharif, 49, was killed.

In Islamabad, the Foreign Office confirmed that Pakistan’s envoy to Kenya along with embassy officials had identified the body at the Chiromo Funeral House in Nairobi and are now awaiting further procedures and a police report.

BRUSSELS, Oct 24 (APP): Minister for Commerce and Investment, Syed Naveed Qamar met the Chair of the European Parliament’s committee for International Trade (INTA), MEP Bernd Lange here on Monday.

Ambassador of Pakistan to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union, Dr. Asad Majeed Khan and other officials were also present during the meeting.

The Commerce Minister underscored that trade and investment ties were a key component of Pakistan’s multifaceted relationship with the EU.

The Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP) Plus has been a mutually beneficial undertaking that played an important part in the growth of Pakistan’s bilateral trade with the EU countries, he added.

According a press release issued by Pakistan Embassy in Brussels, the Minister highlighted that economic stabilization and growth were the key priorities of the current government particularly in the aftermath of the devastating floods and the EU remains a major partner for Pakistan to realize these objectives.

Naveed Qamar emphasized that the GSP Plus was an excellent model for mutually beneficial cooperation between the two sides, as Pakistan’s export to the EU has increased by 86 percent whereas the EU’s exports to Pakistan grew by 69 percent, since inception of the scheme in 2014.

He expressed the hope that the new GSP Plus regulation would continue to focus on its central tenets of supporting sustainable development, poverty alleviation and good governance in the beneficiary countries.

The Chair INTA Committee MEP Lange thanked the Commerce Minister and agreed to work together in further strengthening Pakistan-EU relations, including enhanced exchanges.

During his meeting with European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Mr Janusz Wojciechowski, the Minister for Commerce and Investment stressed the importance of enhancing Pakistan-EU cooperation in agriculture sector especially for modernization of agro-based industries, expansion of storage facilities, research, water management, food security and flood protection.

In a separate interaction, Naveed Qamar met the Standing Rapporteur of Trade Monitoring Group for South Asia in the Committee on International Trade, MEP Maximilian Krah and briefed the MEP about ways and means to further strengthen Pak EU trade and investment relations.

The Minister for Commerce and Investment is visiting Brussels on a weeklong official visit from October 23 to 29, 2022. 

FPCCI, UN to collaborate for sustainable development

KARACHI, Oct 24 (APP): President, Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) Irfan Iqbal Sheikh welcomed the steps taken by the United Nations in Pakistan to promote sustainable, inclusive and socially responsible business growth and practices.

On the occasion of FPCCI and UN’s consultative session on sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the potential of sustained collaboration, the President FPCCI also expressed his desire to collaborate with the UN from the platform of the chamber on behalf of the entire trade and industry community of Pakistan, said a statement issued here on Monday.

He said FPCCI was in a unique position to create awareness in all sectors of the economy on SDGs, climate change, gender equality and social justice.

The high-profile event was attended by UN officials from its various organs namely United Nations Resident Coordinator Office, UN Industrial Development Organization, UN Development Program, UN International Children’s Education Fund, Food and Agricultural Organization, World Food Program and Global Compact from Pakistan, Bangladesh and USA.

SVP FPCCI Suleman Chawla informed that FPCCI had functional and representative standing committees in place on various socioeconomic sectors of the economy. It could fully support the UN’s Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for Pakistan for the period of 2023 – 27. These committees comprise reputable experts from varied fields of sustainable development, i.e. environment, climate change, health, education, women entrepreneurship, women empowerment, human rights, and skills development.

VP FPCCI Engr. M. A. Jabbar taking part in a high-profile panel discussion with Shahnaz Wazirali, a noted politician and a former member of the federal cabinet, emphasized that Pakistan needs to have an efficient, modern, functioning, honest and socially responsible bureaucracy to create an enabling environment for social development. Otherwise, he cautioned, no program for sustainable development and social upliftment would be successful.

Shahnaz Wazirali said that we must embrace diversity, inclusivity, environmental consciousness, social justice and women emancipation to achieve SDGs and tread the path of inclusive and sustainable economic growth. She added that education for all should take prominence in achieving sustainable development.

The UN Resident Coordination Officer, Shah Nasir Khan informed that UN was aware of the fact that Pakistan needs tens of billions of dollars to rehabilitate 33 million people affected by the recent floods and rebuild the infrastructure in the affected areas.

Dr. Jawaid Qureshi, Convener of FPCCI’s Central Standing Committee on UN Affairs, maintained that for protecting Pakistan from the adverse and disproportionate effects of global warming, we need to have at least 25 per cent of the country covered by forests. But, he regretted, currently as we only have 2 per cent of forests in the country.

Pakistan, Turkey to increase cooperation in housing sector

ISLAMABAD, Oct 24 (APP): The brotherly nations of Pakistan, and Turkey on Monday agreed to increase cooperation in various sectors, especially in low-cost housing.

Federal Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Works Iftikhar Ali Shallwani in a meeting with Turkish Ambassador Mehmet Paçaci discussed matters of mutual interest.

Both sides vowed to implement the accords signed between the two brotherly states.

Welcoming the newly appointed ambassador, the secretary of housing expressed his best wishes for his future endeavors.

Shallwani extended his support to the ambassador in all relevant matters.

He reiterated that Pakistan and Turkey enjoy cordial fraternal ties and mutually beneficial bilateral relations.

This very relationship is based on common faith, values, culture, civilization linkages, history, and mutual trust, said Shallwani.

He underscored that Pakistan immensely values its ties with Turkey.

The ambassador expressed similar thoughts for further promoting ties between both the brotherly countries in all domains of mutual interest, particularly in the housing and manufacturing sectors.

The federal secretary extended a cordial invitation to Mehmet Paçaci to attend the upcoming first International Housing Expo-2022.

The envoy supported and expressed his country’s participation in the event and said it will bring mutual dividends to both friendly countries.

Naya Pakistan Housing and Development Authority Chairman, Lieutenant General Anwar Ali Hyder was also present on the occasion.

Pakistan proposes to include climate change sector in CPEC

ISLAMABAD, Oct 24 (APP):Pakistan on Monday proposed the inclusion of “Water Resources Management & Climate Change” as new area of cooperation under the framework of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) for efficient water resources management, development of climate resilient infrastructure.

The proposal was made in the third meeting of Joint Working Group (JWG) between the government of Pakistan and People’s Republic of China was held here on Monday to review the long-term plan of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
The meeting was co-chaired by Secretary Ministry of Planning Development & Special Initiatives Syed Zafar Ali Shah and Pan Jiang through video conference with interval of three years. Director General of the National Development & Reforms Commission of China, representatives of Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Aviation, Finance, Economic Affairs, Gwadar Port Authority, Gwadar Development Authority as well as representatives of their counterparts in China have also attended the meeting.

The meeting reviewed and summarized the implementation status of the CPEC projects and deliberated upon the future course of action with regard to implementation of the CPEC long-term plan. Both sides expressed satisfaction on steady progress made on various projects and agreed to start deepening the work done and then execution of the second phase of CPEC, which is focused on Agriculture Cooperation, Industrial Cooperation, Science & Technology, Information Technology and Socio-Economic Development.

It was noted that since the last meeting of JWG on Planning and CPEC Long Term Plan held on November, 2019 a number of developments have taken place. Globally this period remained marred by COVID-19 pandemic preventing free movement of people between countries and regions. Despite these restrictions and difficulties posed by the pandemic, substantial progress has been achieved.

Both sides noted that out of 26 CPEC-Early Harvest Projects, 14 projects including Karachi-Lahore Motorway: Multan-Sukkur Section, KKH (Phase-II) upgradation & reconstruction from Raikot to Islamabad via Mansehra, Eastbay Expressway, 1320 MW Port Qasim Power Plant, 1320MW Sahiwal Power Plant and 720 MW Karot HPP, etc. have been completed, while currently 5 projects including New Gwadar International Airport and 873 MW Suki Kinari HPP etc are under execution.

The meeting was also informed that the Government of Pakistan was actively implementing various projects, in close collaboration with the Provincial Governments to ensure efficient and time completion with a view to view to make the CPEC a roaring success and directly monitoring the progress of these projects on a monthly basis.

The two sides resolved to redouble the efforts to tap the full potential of cooperation as well as to make sure that the population of Pakistan fully benefit from these projects by utilizing the massive opportunities being created in various sectors.

NA offers Fateha for Arshad Sharif

ISLAMABAD, Oct 24 (APP): The National Assembly on Monday offered Fateha for the senior journalist Arshad Sharif, army personnel who martyred at Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

On the request of Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Maulana Abdul Akbar Chatrali led the Fateha.

He prayed Allah Almighty to rest the departed souls in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved families to bear the loss with equanimity.

Ali Musa, Hakeem Baloch take oath

ISLAMABAD, Oct 24 (APP): The newly elected legislators of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Abdul Hakeem Baloch and Ali Musa Gillani Monday took oath as Member of the National Assembly.

Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervaiz Ashraf administered the oath from both the members.

Later, they signed the roll of members as required by the rules.

Accession of entire Jammu & Kashmir to Pakistan is only solution of Kashmir issue: AJK Acting President

MIRPUR (AJK): Oct 24 (APP): Acting President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq has said that the prime objective of the government of the liberated territory (AJK) was to provide all-out political, moral, and diplomatic support to Kashmiri brethren who have been fighting against India’s illegal occupation for decades.

Addressing the major ceremony hosted to mark the diamond jubilee of the foundation day of the government of Azad Jammu Kashmir in the State metropolis on Monday. The Acting President of AJK termed accession of the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir to Pakistan as the only feasible solution to the Kashmir issue.

He said that the partition of Kashmir was not acceptable to the people of Kashmir. “While celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of Azad Kashmir government, we all have to introspect and take stock of ourselves and see whether we are fulfilling our responsibilities vis-à-vis the ongoing freedom struggle in Kashmir”, he said.

The acting president also paid rich tributes to the armed forces of Pakistan for laying down their lives to protect our borders along the Line of Control.

Recalling the great struggle and sacrifices of the ancestors, the Acting President said, “Our forefathers made unprecedented sacrifices and it is due to their sacrifices that we all are enjoying a free and dignified life in the liberated territory today”.

“Our forefathers rendered matchless sacrifice and toiled hard to establish the administration of this government in the base camp”, Haq said adding that it was now the responsibility of every conscious citizen of Azad Kashmir to safeguard the territorial integrity of the state and play their due role to free rest part of the homeland from the clutches of Indian occupation.

The acting president reiterated Kashmiris’ pledge that the struggle would continue until the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir achieves freedom and becomes a part of Pakistan.

Pakistan committed to UN principles for peace, sustainable development: Bilawal

ISLAMABAD, Oct 24 (APP): Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari Monday reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to working with the United Nations member states for principles-based and prosperity-driven international cooperation to promote peace and sustainable development.
On the occasion of United Nations Day, he said, “Today, on the 77th anniversary of the UN, Pakistan joins the international community in commemorating the United Nations (UN) Day.” “The UN embodies the collective resolve of member states to establish conditions for justice, social progress, and better standards of living in larger freedoms and to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.”
“On this day, Pakistan reaffirms its abiding commitment to multilateralism, with the UN playing a central role in promoting peace, security, development, and human rights for all.”
“Pakistan has always contributed constructively in promoting the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, including in the areas of peacekeeping, refugee protection, humanitarian action, climate change, and international cooperation for sustainable development.”
He said the principles of equal rights and self-determination, which were at the heart of the UN Charter, were instrumental in securing the decolonization and liberation of many states in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, he added.
He said, “As we celebrate the achievements of the United Nations today, we must remember that the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) still await the exercise of their inalienable right to self-determination as guaranteed in numerous resolutions of the UN Security Council.”
“With its principles of a stable, equitable and sustainable world order, the UN remains the most vital international body. It is best suited to meet the contemporary challenges of our times including the existential threat posed by climate change. Pakistan remains committed to UN Charter for the realization of shared objectives of peace and prosperity worldwide,” he added.
He thanked the United Nations agencies, Funds and Programmes for their partnership with Pakistan for advancing socio-economic development objectives.

Positive discussion on GSP Plus with INTA head: Syed Naveed Qmar

PPP working to bring all political parties at negotiation table

ISLAMABAD, Oct 24 (APP): Federal Minister for Commerce Syed Naveed Qamar said here on Monday that he had a positive discussion on the Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP+) and cooperation with the head of the international trade committee INTA Bernard Lange.

In a tweet, the minister said that he discussed the matter with the chair of the International Trade Committee (INTA), Bernd Lange who was accompanied by INTA member Maximilian Krah.

“Positive discussion on GSP+ and cooperation with the chair of international trade committee INTA Bernd Lange and Maximilian Krah, member INTA”, the minister tweeted.

“Frank discussion with Naved Qamar on EU-Pakistan relations, covering labour and human rights, GSP+, global gateway as well as China’s role and influence in the region,” Bernd Lange also said in a tweet.

He said that there was a lot of space for the EU to step up and resume a more visible role in Pakistan and South Asia.
