He said the services of the deceased leader for the Kashmir cause will always be remembered.

Ghulam Ahmad Gulzar said that besides being a visionary political leader, Maulana Abbas Ansari dedicated his entire life for humanity and fought for the political, social, religious and basic rights of the oppressed Kashmiri people. He said Maulana Ansari as the APHC chairman made every effort for the resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the wishes of Kashmiris and relevant UN resolutions.

Maulana Abbass was arrested and imprisoned for pleading the Kashmir case but he remained steadfast and never bowed before Indian oppression, he added.

APHC leaders, Khadim Hussain and Syed Sibte Shabbir Qummi, in a joint statement issued in Srinagar, said that in the demise of Maulana Abbas Ansari, the Kashmiris lost a selfless leader of the freedom movement as well as a great religious scholar. NUMS wins HEC research project grant to work on early detection of Cancer in Pakistan

0

RAWALPINDI, Oct 26 (APP): National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) has won grant of over Rs 7 million from the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for conducting research into identifying “biomarkers” for detection of cancer at an early stage in Pakistani population.

This was stated by Asma Saleem Qazi, Assistant Professor (Molecular Pathology) Department of Biological Sciences (DBS) NUMS, whose research proposal was selected by HEC through a competitive process held across the country under the National Research Programme for Universities (NRPU). This research project will last for three years, she added.

The “development of diagnostic panel for early-stage cancer detection” project will gather samples from the Pakistani population which would help in early diagnosis of cancer. Currently, “cancer among patients in the country is detected when it is already spread and the chances of their survival are very low”, she said.

According to WHO, the number of overall new cancer patients in Pakistan in 2020 stood at 178,338, among them 88,015 were males and 90,373 were females.

Dr Asma said the majority of females were affected by breast cancer while males were mostly afflicted by lip and oral cancer. There were “various causes behind cancer including smoking, using different types of ‘paans’ (betel leaves), and air and water pollutants, she added.

Meanwhile, NUMS and the Malaysian University College Sedaya International (UCSI) are also collaborating to study the anti-cancer potential of certain hemisynthesized derivatives or plant extracts in treating cancer.

Under the “Research excellence and innovation grant”, UCSI is funding the project which is a recognition of NUMS research potential, said Dr. Asma. She and her team in collaboration with Malaysian scientist Dr. Lionel In LianAun and his team have jointly developed the project.

Giving details of the project, she said. “it revolves around studying anticancer potential and preclinical assessments of certain plants and /or hemisynthesized derivatives in different solid tumors and cancers. Based on some data available, these extracts and derivatives possess anti-cancer potential. Yet, still, some more research is required to reach a conclusion in this regard.”

Dr. Aisha Mohyuddin, Dean Multidisciplinary Studies NUMS, emphasized the importance of cancer research in the Pakistani patient population. There is a lack of reliable epidemiologic data of our patients that is an impediment to developing informed evidence-based strategies for cancer prevention and treatment, she said.

She added that NUMS was committed to conducting good quality cancer research in various areas, including natural product research, nanomedicine and genetics, which would “ultimately benefit our patient population”.

Dr. Asma said many common factors in Pakistan and Malaysia were among the causes of cancer in both the countries which also motivated them into a joint research venture. According to the global cancer observatory, mouth and lip cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, colon and colorectal cancer prevalence is quite high in both collaborating countries.

“We have selected the cancer types based on their prevalence between both collaborating countries. Pakistan is the land of multiple ethnicities and owing to cancer heterogeneity, mutational analysis and the silent threat of its uncontrolled spread makes cancer one of the most common killers. Likewise, Malaysia also has diverse ethnicity and cultural system, among all Chinese, Malay and Indian ethnicities have shown high incidence and mortality rates of colorectal cancer,” she said.

ISLAMABAD, Oct 26 (APP):All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) senior leader and general secretary United Political Forum (UPF), Muhammad Yousuf Naqash said on Wednesday that October 27, 1947 was the darkest day in the history of Kashmir.

In a statement received here, he said, it was on this day when Indian forces landed on Kashmiris’ soil and forcibly occupied it against the will of the people and in sheer violation of the partition plan.

Ever since, he said, Kashmiris have been struggling against the occupation and have rendered unprecedented sacrifices.

He said India has miserably failed to crush the freedom struggle during the last 75 years as is evident from the presence of the excessive number of forces (over 900,000) in IIOJK.

He said, the killings of innocents, forced disappearances, ban on freedom of expression and detention of Hurriyat leaders and activists could not deter Kashmiris from pursuing their goal of freedom.

Naqash appealed to the people to make the APHC strike call on October 27 successful and asked them to conduct a blackout at night to send a clear message to India and the world that Kashmiris were determined to keep on their journey for freedom, come what may.

He urged the international community to break the silence and support the UN-mandated right to self-determination for Kashmiris.

Meanwhile, Naqash termed the death of religious scholar and senior Hurriyat leader Maulana Abbas Ansari as an irreparable loss. He said the deceased was a righteous and courageous leader and was also a supporter of inter-Muslim unity, for which his services were unforgettable.

Meanwhile, Syed Mushtaq Hussain, a member of APHC Azad Kashmir chapter, appealed to Kashmiris to support fully the strike call by APHC Chairman Musrat Alam, Asia Andrabi, Shabbir Ahmad Shah and other leaders.

He said, through this strike, Kashmiris should once again make it loud and clear that they would continue their struggle until the goal of freedom is not achieved.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the day will be marked by a complete shutdown and civil curfew by the people in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Protest marches, rallies and seminars will be held in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan and all over the world to condemn the invasion of the territory by the Indian Army on October 27, 1947 as well as the revocation of special status of occupied Kashmir by the Modi-led fascist Indian government on August 5, 2019.

The call for the observance of the shutdown and Black Day has been given by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference. The APHC, in a statement in Srinagar, asked the Kashmiris to demonstrate to the world that they would not rest till Jammu and Kashmir was liberated from Indian slavery.

It urged the global community to give up its criminal silence on the Indian brutalities in IIOJK and take practical steps to force New Delhi to give the Kashmiris their right to self-determination as per the UN Security Council resolutions.

Meanwhile, posters appeared in Srinagar and other parts of the territory, urging people to observe shutdown in IIOJK, tomorrow, against the illegal occupation of their motherland by India.

It was on October 27, 1947 when Indian troops in total violation of the spirit of the Partition Plan of the Subcontinent had militarily invaded Jammu and Kashmir and illegally occupied it against the will of the Kashmiri people.
