No concept of forced marriage in Islam: Ashrafi

KARACHI, Sep 21 (APP): Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Interfaith Harmony and Middle East, Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi Wednesday said that there was no concept of forced marriage or conversion of religion in Islam.

He was addressing “National Dialogue with Religious Scholars” organised by UN Women in collaboration with UNFPA and UK Aid here for deliberating on negative effects of child marriage and devising a way forward to address the issue through effective awareness raising and advocacy.

Council of Islamic Ideology’s Chairman Doctor Qibla Ayaz and other members of the council, representative of UN Women, UNFPA, UK Aid, and international and national organisations and health experts among others attended the dialogue.

Hafiz Tahir Ashrafi terming child marriages as an important social issue said that well-being of girls should be given priority as only a healthy mother could give birth to a healthy child.

He said that associating child and forced marriages with Islam was totally erroneous and baseless notion as it was the religion of peace and it had granted a respectable status to the women.

Hafiz Ashrafi referring to Ahadis Mubarka said that being mature physically and mentally was specified as prerequisite for entering into matrimonial bond.

Last Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) had sought consent of Bibi Fatima before her marriage with Hazrat Ali and set an everlasting guiding example for the entire Muslim Ummah, he added.

A girl who was being married had to manage three homes- of her husband, of in laws and of parents- and the gigantic task was not possible without maturity and intellect, he opined and said that it was prime responsibility of parents to take best care of health of girls, well educate them for future life and ensure every possible facility to them.

Hafiz Ashrafi also lauded the CII for adopting a clear and comprehensive approach towards the issue.

All the stakeholders including health experts should sit together to assess and analyze problems and issues arising from child marriages and reach at a conclusion acceptable to all, he suggested and urged that everyone should come forward to do away with health problems being endured by women due to marriages in minor age.

He also stressed on all concerned organisations as well as media to play proactive role for the cause and initiate a vast scale mass awareness campaign while engaging the religious scholars to sensitise the public about harsh effects of child marriages.

Special representative to PM also stressed on comprehensive measures to deal with challenges and diseases arising after torrential rains and floods across the country and appealed the government and international organisations to take every possible step to save the flood victims particularly children and women from the diseases.

Chairman, Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), Dr. Qibla Ayaz, speaking at the occasion said that child marriages were leading to medical, psychological and social problems particularly for women and it had become a widely debated issue around the world.

The CII had conducted a comprehensive research on the issue of child marriages and collected detailed data and reference material and hold in depth deliberations on it, he informed, adding that prominent Muslim scholar Allama Muhammad Shafi Usmani in his Fatwa (religious decree) maintained “Child Marriage is fraught with problems.”

He said that CII had recommended imparting awareness to the masses, engagement of all the relevant institutions, inclusion of informational material in syllabus and dealing with root causes of child marriages so that the issue could be addressed in a gradual manner.

He said the CII was committed to work with UN Women to overcome the issue.
The Country representative of UN Women in Pakistan Sharmeela Rasool and country representative of UNFPA Dr. Bakhtior Kadirov also spoke at the occasion.

PM thanks Guterres, Erdogan for strong advocacy of Pakistan’s flood relief action on UN platform

NEW YORK, Sep 21 (APP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday expressed gratitude to the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Turkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for strongly advocating the need for urgent collective action in the wake of massive floods in Pakistan.

“Thank you Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for your strong advocacy of the plight of flood victims and drawing the world’s attention to the most urgent actionable issue of climate change,” he posted on his Twitter handle.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday highlighted the huge destruction caused by climate change, saying he himself saw it in Pakistan, where, he said, one-third of the country was submerged by a “monsoon on steroids”.

The prime minister stressed that the international community needed to move away from talking about climate change to acting together.

PM Sharif thanked Turkiye’s President Erdogan for highlighting the need for international assistance to Pakistan amid its post-flood problems in the shape of relief and rehabilitation.

“My brother President Erdogan highlights the need for the continued international assistance to help Pakistan deal with the disastrous flood,” he said in another tweet.

The prime minister also acknowledged the continued support of President Erdogan for the right to self-determination of the Kashmiris of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

“We thank the President for his consistent support for the rights of Kashmiris of IIOJK,” he said.

Govt.committed to eradicate human trafficking: Interior Minister

ISLAMABAD, Sep 21 (APP): Minister for Interior Rana Sanaullah Khan on Wednesday said that incumbent government is committed to eliminate human trafficking and coordination among federal government and Provinces is imperative to end it from the society.

He was addressing a seminar titled “High level consultation on Human Trafficking in Persons” organized jointly by the Federal Investigation Agency and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Islamabad.

The Minister expressed government’s resolve that it is taking concrete steps to bring down the ratio of human trafficking to zero level.

Talking to media persons, Interior Minister criticized Imran Khan for misleading the people and dividing the nation through his rude attitude. He said Imran Khan is trying to malign the state institutions.

Regarding the law and order situation of the capital, he said all are equal before the law and no one will be allowed to take law into hand.

To a question about Long March of Imran Khan, he said that those province supporting the long march of Imran Khan would violate the constitution and there would be consequences of it.” The constitution gives power to the federal government and I would ask cabinet and prime minister to use it in case of such situation”, he added.

To another question about legislation related to transgender persons, Rana Sanaullah said that everything should be decided according to our religion which guide us on all matters. “We are Muslims first and everything comes later. We would have to regulate our lives according to Islam and religious scholars would be consulted on this issue,” he added.

To a question about closure of roads in Islamabad, he said that D-Chowk has been closed due to protest of farmers. He said that negotiations would be conducted with the leadership of farmers and their demands would be considered.

He said that protesting farmers could be provided appropriate place to lodge their protest, however, they couldn’t be allowed to come to D-Chowk for protest and to be requested for this purpose.

He said that strong action would be taken against participants of PTI long march if they attempt to come towards D-Chowk. The protestors can assemble at F-9 park or some other places as apex court has already guided in this regard. However, strong action would be taken in case of any attempt to come towards D-Chowk, the minister maintained.

He criticized Imran Khan’s attitude and said that no one could negotiate with him as he has incredible personality. Talking about Toshakhana case against Imran Khan, he said that former prime minister had been involved in embezzlement and received amount of around Rs. 260 million by selling gifts in the market.

He criticized Imran Khan for out-of-court settlement made in a case of over Rs50 billion laundering by the previous government, as there was no clue who had signed this agreement. He said that amount of Rs50 billion of Bahria Town was confiscated which had been transferred against the law and returned against donation of land for Al-Qadir trust.

Languages learning vital to benefit from vast reservoirs of knowledge: President

ISLAMABAD, Sep 21 (APP): President Dr Arif Alvi on Wednesday said that besides learning and promoting the national language, it was also important to learn other languages, especially English, to benefit from the vast reservoir of scientific, technical, and business knowledge available in those languages.

He was addressing the inaugural session of the three-day 1st Pak TESOL international conference on emerging trends in English language teaching in Pakistan, at the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), here.

US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome, Vice-Chancellor of AIOU, Professor Dr Zia ul Qayum also addressed the conference.

In his address, the president said that being heritage and a language of communication at the national level, therefore, we should appropriately focus on the promotion and development of Urdu.

He said added that the English language was spoken by a large number of people and was a language of international communication. Therefore, he said it could be beneficial for acquiring modern scientific and technological knowledge as well as for communicating Pakistan’s perspective effectively to the international community.

The president said that scientific knowledge and terms were usually available in the language of developed countries, therefore, it was important to learn those languages.

President Alvi said that though modern research and development was taking place in other languages as well, however, a vast amount of research was being done in the English language, which made its learning essential for increasing the pace of the country’s development.

The president said that the latest advancements in the field of Information Technology (IT), especially in the form of Artificial Intelligence, were affecting every facet of life. Modern applications and technology could be used to learn languages in an easy and effective manner.

He said that modern technology had altered the concept of learning and education and that the memorization of information had gained secondary importance as compared to analytical and logical decision-making.

The president highlighted that the Muslim world in the past had displayed reluctance in adopting the latest technology, especially the Gutenberg printing press, which caused Muslim societies to lag behind in science and knowledge.

He added that the Muslims of the sub-continent also showed resistance to learning the English language due to its colonial nature, before being urged by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan for its learning to acquire knowledge and advance socially, politically and economically.

The president said that earlier a vast resource of knowledge and philosophy was available in Greek which was later translated by the Muslims into Arabic. Later, this vast reservoir of knowledge was translated and transferred to English and other languages, he added.

He said that human vocabulary was limited and the failure to understand the context and background of communication may lead to misunderstanding and miscommunication, which may create issues among families as well as nations.

He said that the world was faced with the issue of fake news and out-of-context communication, which needed to be addressed so that misgivings and apprehensions among the people and nations may be avoided.

He recalled that he had a long association with the process of learning different languages, including Arabic, English and Urdu, during his academic and professional life.

President Alvi appreciated the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) for using hybrid educational methodologies to achieve the dream of “education for all” by imparting education to students, especially in the far-flung areas of the country.
He said that he had been making efforts for the promotion of online and hybrid modes of learning in Pakistan as it was the easiest and the most cost-effective solution to impart education.

US Ambassador Donald Blome said that the lives and livelihoods of a large number of people had been affected due to the catastrophic floods in Pakistan whereas millions of people had also been left homeless. America stood with Pakistan in this difficult time, he assured.

The US ambassador said that the US had been making efforts for many years to enhance the capacity of students and teachers in Pakistan through the Fulbright and other scholarship programs.

He added that under the Fulbright program, 800 students and teachers were sent to the US this year. He said that the US embassy had also trained 30 thousand teachers in Pakistan.

Allama Iqbal Open University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor, Prof Dr Ziaul Qayyum said that the university was taking steps to equip millions of students in remote and backward areas of the country with quality education as well as to increase the capacity of teachers.

He also thanked the president for his continuous support and guidance to AIOU in the causing of promoting quality education in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s flood devastation in need of serious global attention: PM

NEW YORK, Sep 21 (APP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday said the devastation caused by floods in Pakistan needed the attention of the international community to help the country cope with the grave challenge of relief and rehabilitation.

“Pakistan is passing through difficult times and the havoc wreaked by floods, which is obvious before the world, needs serious attention,” he said in his video statement on the situation of flash floods in the country.

The recent floods in Pakistan inundated one-third of the land, inflicting massive damage to human lives, infrastructure, livestock and crops.

The prime minister, who is in New York to attend the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, said he was in touch with the authorities concerned back in Pakistan dealing with the post-flood relief and rehabilitation activities.

During the interaction with the world leaders, Sharif said that he highlighted the plight of the flood-affected people including children.

The prime minister urged the local companies manufacturing baby food to meet the required quantity of the commodity to be supplied to the children in the flood-hit areas.

He also stressed amplifying donation of baby food in order to address the shortage of the stuff. 

PM Sharif lauded the federal and provincial governments besides the armed forces and the National Disaster Management Authority in carrying out rescue, relief and rehabilitation activities in the flood-affected areas.
