Nourishing future generations: BISP’s Benazir Nashonuma Programme reaches 770,000 beneficiaries

ISLAMABAD, Aug 09 (APP): Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has so far reached over 770,000 lactating mothers and infants to deliver nutritious food, cash stipends and guidance under the Benazir Nashonuma initiative.

This was revealed by the Federal Minister of Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety, Shazia Marri who was called on by the Country Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), Chris Kaye, at her office on Wednesday.

Shazia Marri said that the Benazir Nashonuma Programme has transitioned and expanded beyond its initial pilot project phase, now encompassing the entire country.

Presently, BISP is providing support to 770,000 lactating mothers and infants through 488 Facilitation Centers spread across Pakistan, delivering both Special Nutritious Food (SNF) and cash stipends.

The federal minister expressed her gratitude for the technical assistance provided by WFP to the BISP’s Benazir Nashonuma Programme.

She highlighted that this initiative facilitates 770,000 mothers and children with specialized nutritious food and cash stipends. Additionally, she shared that BISP is in the process of implementing an innovative payment mechanism.

Through the introduction of the “Benazir Social Protection Account” under the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), the government is taking a significant stride towards ensuring transparency in cash disbursements.

This novel payment system empowers women by enabling them to choose their preferred banks, ensuring direct payments into their accounts for convenient withdrawals.

The Country Director of WFP commended BISP for its commendable service delivery and pledged to continue the partnership between WFP and BISP, particularly in addressing the critical requirements of vulnerable individuals, especially during times of crisis.

Secretary BISP Amer Ali Ahmad and DG (CCT) were also present at the meeting.

ASEAN values Pakistan’s partnership, support for community-building efforts: Malaysian Ambassador

ISLAMABAD, Aug 9 (APP): The Chairman of the ASEAN Committee in Islamabad (ACI) and the High Commissioner of Malaysia to Pakistan Ambassador Mohammad Azhar Mazlan has commended Pakistan’s pivotal role within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), emphasizing that member countries greatly value Pakistan’s partnership and its support in ASEAN’s efforts towards community building.

“I am confident that this partnership would spur deeper engagements and interactions between ASEAN and Pakistan in meaningful cooperation across three pillars of ASEAN namely the ASEAN Political-Security Community; the ASEAN Economic Community and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community,” he said while addressing the occasion of the 56th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Islamabad.

The gathering was also attended by the Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, Dr. Asad Majeed, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Pakistan and ASEAN Heads of Mission.

He said ASEAN-Pakistan cooperation has extended in various sectors, among others, in trade and investment, agriculture, education, culture and tourism, capacity building, and technical cooperation.

“I would like to cite the ASEAN-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement, which took effect in 2013, as a testament to the strengthened economic ties between ASEAN and Pakistan” he added.

The HC said, in 2022, the total trade between ASEAN and Pakistan approached a significant milestone of USD 11 billion.

Amb. Mazlan extended his heartfelt appreciation to all those who have contributed to the remarkable success of the ASEAN-Pakistan partnership. With an optimistic outlook, he emphasized the potential for a brighter and more promising shared future.

Reflecting on the genesis of ASEAN 56 years ago, Amb. Mazlan emphasized the organization’s pivotal role in maintaining regional peace, security, and stability. He recalled the historic meeting of Foreign Ministers from Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand on August 8, 1967, in Bangkok, where they signed the ASEAN Declaration, laying the foundation for ASEAN’s subsequent development into a highly effective intergovernmental body.

He stressed that ASEAN, with an aggregate GDP exceeding USD 3 trillion, is poised to become the fourth-largest economy globally by 2050.

He also noted ASEAN’s attractiveness as a magnet for foreign direct investment, a testament to its successful regional economic integration.

Mr. Mazlan highlighted the significance of the signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) in November 2020 with five trading partners, which further solidified ASEAN’s status as a model of “open regionalism.”

Acknowledging the positive impact of cultural and people-to-people exchanges, including initiatives like the ASEAN Cultural Festival and educational scholarships, Mr. Mazlan emphasized how these endeavors enriched understanding and nurtured enduring friendships.

Mr. Mazlan called upon stakeholders to continually strengthen bonds of friendship and collaboration, advocating for innovative strategies to address shared challenges including climate change, terrorism, and public health crises.

On the occasion, the Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, His Excellency Dr. Asad Majeed Khan remarked that ASEAN has undergone a remarkable transformation since its inception. What initially started as a modest group of nations has evolved into one of the most influential regional cooperation organizations, boasting an impressive GDP exceeding USD 3 trillion, he added.

Highlighting ASEAN’s economic prowess, he noted that it stands as the fifth-largest global economy and is on a trajectory to claim the fourth spot by 2050. He specifically pointed out Pakistan’s significant engagement with ASEAN, having achieved the status of sectoral dialogue partner in 1993.

Dr. Khan emphasized Pakistan’s unique position as the oldest sectoral dialogue partner, maintaining this status for nearly three decades.

He expressed Pakistan’s commitment to deepening its partnership with ASEAN, recognizing its immense value in enhancing relations not only with ASEAN as an entity but also with its individual member countries.

The foreign secretary reiterated Pakistan’s amicable ties with all ASEAN nations and voiced optimism for their continued growth, as a united Asia promises a more prosperous and promising future. Addressing maritime cooperation, he highlighted Pakistan’s eagerness to bolster ties with ASEAN member states in this important area.

He stressed the importance of a robust and prosperous Southeast Asia for the broader stability and prosperity of the entire Asia Pacific region and beyond.

Dr. Khan affirmed that stronger regional connectivity leads to collective growth.

Expressing Pakistan’s aspirations, he conveyed the hope that Pakistan swiftly attains the status of a full dialogue partner of ASEAN. This, he emphasized, would further contribute to the peace and prosperity of the region.

In the meantime, he underlined Pakistan’s focus on fostering concrete and substantial cooperation within existing partnerships with ASEAN.

Pakistan aims to leverage its strengths in key areas like trade, economy, culture, and tourism, aiming to engage with ASEAN across multiple sectors and at various levels, he added.

Economic development must for country’s prosperity: Kundi

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Aug 09 (APP): Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Faisal Karim Kundi said that economic development was must for any country’s prosperity.


During a visit to a private security office here Wednesday, he said that the restoration of the international community’s confidence and promotion of foreign investment was needed for economic development.


He said that the founder leader of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Zulfikar Ali Bhutto gave priority to the economic prosperity of the people. He said the ”Roti, Kapra aur Makan” was not just a slogan but a vision.


He said that former president Asif Ali Zardari had laid the foundation stone of the mega project China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) under the same vision, adding that the CPEC project had started the process of changing the country’s destiny.


Likewise, the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) is also a mission of economic prosperity at the grass-roots level, he maintained.


Faisal Kundi mentioned that PPP Chairman and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was promoting a positive image of Pakistan at the international level following the vision of his grandfather.

ECNEC approves various national development projects

ISLAMABAD, Aug 9 (APP): Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Wednesday chaired a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), which approved various national development projects.

The ECNEC approved projects including construction of Awaran and Panjgur dams, besides approving Resilient Housing Re-construction and Restoration in Balochistan province, said a press release issued by the Ministry of Finance.

The meeting also accorded approval for Punjab Urban land Systems enhancent project, dualization of road in Bahawalpur district in Punjab province and phase-1 of the establishment of regional grids in Gilgit-Baltistan region.

The ECNEC approved the construction/reconstruction of existing schools in Sindh affected in rain and floods of 2022 and revised Sindh solar project in Sindh Province.

Pak-China welding school helps receive training, jobs

BEIJING, Aug. 9 (APP): A Karachi-based “Welding School” under the Greater Karachi Water Supply Scheme, also known as K-IV has trained several technical talents locally, helping the locals receive both training and jobs.

The school was jointly launched by China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC) and Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA). Its each training session lasts for seven days, China Economic Net (CEN) reported on Wednesday.

So far 124 students have received training, of which 61 students have graduated and all got successfully employed. “The employment rate has reached 100 percent” source from CCCC noted.

K-IV is a vital project for Karachi, as it would help address the issue of water supply to the cosmopolitan city and economic hub of Pakistan. However, the city is facing a shortage of well-trained welders. To tackle this, the management of K-IV established a “Welding School” specifically for local employees. This school can not only solve the shortage of welders in the local market but also provide advanced technical support from China to local employees.

The “Welding School” is a technical training center led by professional Chinese welding masters, specifically providing practical training and technical guidance for local employees. This school is dedicated to helping the locals improve their welding skills. After training, the project will greenlight outstanding trainees’ employment by allowing them to join the project or they can also choose to work for other companies.

Federal Minister for Water Resources Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah highlighted that the completion of the K-IV project will effectively alleviate the water shortage in Karachi, and so to improve people’s lives and promote economic development in the region.

K-IV is the largest livelihood project in Pakistan to date, and upon completion, it will solve the water problem for over 20 million people in Karachi. The reporter learned that the project has been underway for one year and 39 percent construction has already been completed.

TEVTA organizes technical, vocational course for street children

PESHAWAR, Aug 09 (APP):The Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA), has started free technical and vocational courses in order to make the street children skilled and educated here on Wednesday.

Deputy Commissioner, Shah Fahad, during his visit to the center at University Town, said that the programme was aimed to educate the street children besides making them skilled so that they could easily get jobs or start their own trade.

During the six-month-long courses, the street children including males and females aged between 11 to 15 would be trained in different professional courses besides learning traditional education.

The event was organized in collaboration with the district administration and the RAN’AA Child Welfare Foundation.

He said that the 3 to 5 hours courses would be conducted daily.
